ChildServe Introduces Autism Program A Girl and Her World Ellie Has a Team of Support to Help With Her Diagnoses Could My Child Have Autism?

Evolving Hope For Families New Program Provides Much-Needed Services Dear Friend of ChildServe, As a society, we like to hear about miracles in medicine. It gives us the feeling of hope that anything is possible. At the same time, there are many things that still need to be discovered. For example, when people learn that one in 88 children is affected by autism, they wonder why the incident rates are so high. They ask, “What causes autism?” and “How can we treat or even prevent autism?”

ChildServe Aids Children in Skill Development

At ChildServe, thanks to the vision and passion of our staff, we are introducing a new service to families and children living with autism. While we do not know the answers to the big questions above, we are responding

to some other questions families are asking, such as, “I think my child has autism – can you help me understand what that means? What should I do? How can I help my child? Where can I get help?” ChildServe’s Autism Program is designed to provide a comprehensive base of services for families who aren’t sure whether their children have autism or

not; don’t know if their children need to be seen at a screening clinic; or need help getting their children on behavior plans, access to pediatric psychologists or referrals to specialty physicians. It is because of the generous people in our community that we are able to offer services such as the Autism Program. We see miracles happening inside our doors every day as a result of new research, passionate philanthropists and determined staff. Ellie Has a Team of Support To Help With Her Diagnoses

When she was 3, Ellie was diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and classical autism. Her emotional and developmental age was about two-thirds of her chronological age, making it difficult for her to understand herself and her surroundings. With constant sensory intrusions of smells, sounds, movement, urges and sights, she didn’t know how to respond.

that works based on consistency and routine provided by teachers, aides, family and others who work with Ellie. “It means the world to me to have so much outside support and people who care about my daughter,” Jamie says. “As a parent of a child with autism, one of the hardest things to deal with is a lack of understanding and acceptance from others. But it’s absolutely essential to reach out and make these connections to allow your child to have a life. And it’s OK to ask for help.” In addition to the collaboration on her behavior

Some progress was made, but because her behaviors were so severe, Ellie’s mom, Jamie, eventually had to discontinue the therapies because they turned into traumatic experiences for her daughter. Ellie was able to continue receiving therapy through services offered at her school. Jamie was proactive in identifying a team of people to aid in Ellie’s growth and care since she was in preschool.

Other children often wait nine months to receive such care due to a lack of skill development assistants, a position actively being recruited for at ChildServe. That means children are missing out on a developmental window of opportunity. “If you’re 2 and you don’t have communication skills, you can be a very frustrated young person.

‘You have to be flexible and creative and adapt to what that child needs for that moment.’

Robbie Van Arkel, a skill development specialist through ChildServe’s supported community living program, has worked with Sophie, 11, since she was diagnosed with autism at age 2½.

Barb says many families are willing to wait because ChildServe specializes in children and offers other therapies as well. Some children enroll earlier by bringing a caregiver who can be trained by ChildServe, or if they need daytime hours. Robbie, one of the longer-serving employees, had several years of experience in the field before coming to ChildServe. The therapy she provides evolves as the child matures. She worked with Sophie at a young age to develop basic communication skills and now they talk about feelings, discuss events from school and develop problem-solving skills. A large part of the job is breaking skills down, repeating and building on each piece so children can understand, remember and build independence from them, Robbie says. Every step forward is applauded. “Sometimes it can be very small. But it’s a great achievement for that child and the family,” she says. Staff members help children work on three to four goals, each with different steps and input from the family and supervisors. Typically, employees meet with children two to three times a week for an average of two hours. “You have to be flexible and creative and adapt to what that child needs for that moment,” Elizabeth says. Robbie sees the relationships built with families and

A Chance to ‘Git-R-Done’

Larry the Cable Guy Spreads Cheer, Makes Dreams Come True at ChildServe

When a child’s eyes glisten and smile right along with his mouth, you know a part of his soul has been touched in a way that he will never forget. That moment happened for Jerry last August, when he received a very special surprise visit from his favorite comedian, Larry the Cable Guy. ChildServe employees collaborated to make Jerry’s dream a reality. Larry the Cable Guy is known for his catchphrase “Git-R-Done” on the Blue Collar Comedy tour, as well as voicing the character Tow Mater in the hit movie Cars. He was in town for an appearance at the Iowa State Fair when he heard that a fan of his would love a chance to meet him at the fair. He did one better and offered to come meet Jerry at ChildServe. They got acquainted, shared some big laughs over Jerry’s digital whoopee cushion, and Jerry led Larry the Cable Guy on a tour of the transitional and continuing care units. “Jerry watched Larry the Cable Guy on TV at least

Kyle Volunteers His Time at Local Businesses and Efforts

A great life looks different for every child. For Kyle, it includes participating in the community like his peers do every day – but this 17-year-old is participating by volunteering his time to local businesses and efforts. Kyle began his work at the Science Center of Iowa a year ago. He works a couple of hours on Sunday afternoons. During his time there, he helps with some light cleaning, reorganizes exhibits that people have explored, greets visitors at the door and helps full-time staff with various tasks around the building. Kyle also helps clean at a local fitness center and assists with the donated clothes closet at Urbandale High School. Kyle receives case management, respite and supported community living (SCL) services through ChildServe. Many years ago, as a youngster, he received some speech therapy. This opportunity was set

She thought she and Larry could make a difference and wanted to be involved. “We were so surprised at the diverse things ChildServe does for families and children,” Larry says. “Once we understood what all is possible, we knew we wanted to be part of helping ChildServe connect people with the services they might need.” Through their support, the couple have seen the Stelter-Fisher Transitional Care Unit come to fruition

Larry Stelter and Peggy Fisher are familiar names around ChildServe. This compassionate couple’s generosity has impacted the lives of hundreds of children and families. Their commitment to helping people offers a wonderful visual of philanthropy and the profound impact it can make. Growing up, Larry didn’t know much about philanthropy aside from the typical – bell ringers around the holidays, packets passed around the neighborhood gathering money for those in need

for children who need specialized short-term care while they move from hospitalization to home. They’ve also had the opportunity to be involved in one young man’s life and see the evolvement of his health and happiness over the past 10 years.
