Food and Lifestyle Photography for Beginners and Bloggers In these days of foodblogs, Instagram and Face­ book, we are surrounded by images of meals en­ joyed by friends or perfect strangers from all around the world. In this workshop you will learn many of the secrets behind those mouthwatering images that often make you hungry. Through both visual and practical examples, we will explore many of the aspects that go into the making of such inspiring photos. With a better un­ derstanding of our perception of the world and how it relates to our cameras, you will learn which camera settings and lenses can give you the best results. You will understand the different types of light, what props are and how to choose them to highlight your food, what food­styling is and how it can help you. To finish, we will touch upon post­production work and how you can improve your images using soft­ ware like Lightroom and Photoshop. Please bring your camera.

Sicilian Cooking Sicilian cuisine reflects the varied history of this island and therefore stands out from the normal Italian cooking. The wide use of aubergines bears witness to the Turkish Empire while the taste for sugar, spices and almonds was established du­ ring the Saracen. Bengali vegetarian cooking Nowadays, more and more people wish to decre­ ase their consumption of meat for both ethical and health reasons. With a combination of garlic, oni­ on and ginger at the base and the use of spices, aromatics and chillies adapted to individual tas­ tes, Bengali dishes can be prepared for anyone. All varieties of pulses with their high protein con­ tent are used, such as chick peas, mung beans and all the variety of lentils. Familiar vegetables, as well as newcomers such as aubergines reveal a surprising delectability. We will be cooking with exotic vegetables, such as Korolla (bitter melon), famed for its health benefits. They are mainstays of Bengali cooking and widely available in Bonn. Altogether, this is a cuisine particularly suited to a palate that requires real taste and freshness in healthy eating.

Northern Italian Cuisine: RISOTTO Risotto is a dominant staple in some northern re­ gions of Italy, where it is often preferred over pas­ ta. It can be successfully prepared by using the right type of Italian rice, a good stock (instead of bouillon cubes), fresh ingredients, and by follow­ ing a few basic techniques of cooking. In this course we will learn the basic procedure for coo­ king any risotto dish, how to make a perfectly cre­ amy and tender risotto dish any time "all´onda", and how to make different stocks for our risotto dishes. Together we will prepare some authentic Italian risotto recipes, from traditional to innova­ tive and creative.

APERICENA: Italian Trend in Dining Out In Italy the "aperitivo" has always been a popular social custom before dinner. Lately, the traditional concept of a simple drink by adding just nuts and chips has been changed. In fact, nowadays there is a new name to define this new trend: APERICENA (aperitivo+dinner). Many bars from northen to southern Italy offer a buffet of hot and cold appetizers to accompany drinks. It’s not finger food, it’s not tapas but some­ thing more sophisticated! In this course we will cook together hot and cold small dishes, from little appetizers to delicious dishes in small portion in order to change and enrich your parties. Furthermore, we will try to recreate the same "bar atmosphere" as amused as relaxed Italians do when they finish work.

Places of Democracy in Bonn A Guided Cycle Tour Between 1948 and 1990, Bonn was the capital of West Germany and after the fall of the Iron Cur­ tain, it remained the seat of government of united Germany until 1999. This guided cycle tour will take us to visit some of the most significant places of democracy in Bonn. The first stop will be the Museum Alexander Koe­ nig, which was used by the parliamentary council and also as Chancellor’s office for Konrad Ade­ nauer. Among other places, we will ride by and hear information about the Bundestag (Parlia­ ment), the former Bundeskanzleramt (Office of the Chancellor), as well as former embassy buil­ dings. The tour, guided by Elke Burbach from the Ger­ man Cycling Club ­ ADFC ­ and Britta Krollmann from VHS, will be approximately 15 km long and will start and end at the Poppelsdorfer Schloss­ weiherbrücke. Duration of tour: approx. 2 1/2 hours, there will be a coffee break at the end, which is not included in the fee. Please bring your own bike!

Dreampath "Hatzenporter Laysteig" Wine Culture and Panoramic Views over the River Mosel A Guided Walk with English Commentary In 2006 new hiking paths along the rivers Rhine, Mosel and around the Eifel, the "dream paths", were presented to the public. They are superbly located and guarantee untroubled hiking delights. Our tour takes us to the "Hatzenporter Laysteig", the name "Hatzenport" stemming from the Latin "Hattonis Porta", meaning harbour. Worth seeing are besides beautiful picturesque half­timbered buildings two churches and the old ferry tower. Our way leads us up to the heights across a stri­ kingly steep slope. Walking along demanding vi­ neyard paths we arrive at the refuge of the Rabenlay where we enjoy splendid vistas over the Mosel valley. We continue our walk back to Hat­ zenport along the hillside ledge, on mellow mea­ dow paths, through woods and along trails left in their natural state. Trained hikers being sure­foo­ ted and having no fear of heights may climb down across the via ferrata "Dolling". All other hikers walk down to the valley the "normal" path. We ta­ ke a final rest in a cosy wine pub in Hatzenport. For more information please contact VHS Bonn.
