SACC September Calendar September 2 – The Executive Board and Board of Directors of the Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce will meet at 8 a.m. at the Swansboro Plaza Conference Center. September 6 – Chris Cavanaugh, Nashville recording artist, will be featured in the SwanFest Concert Series. The show, 6:30-8 p.m., will be at the Harry C. Pugliese Jr. Pavilion Stage at Olde Towne Square. September 9 - The SACC general membership meeting at the Icehouse Waterfront Restaurant begins at 8 a.m. Our guest speaker will be announced later. The cost is $10 per person and includes breakfast, tax and tip. September 9 – The SACC Military Affairs Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Swansboro Plaza Conference

Parks celebrate ... (Continued from page 1C) In the spring of 2015, Hammocks Beach State Park expanded, adding 289 acres, thanks to funds from Onslow County commissioners and organizations like the Friends of the Hammocks and Bear Island. “The park is looking forward to planning what to do with this property,” Murphy explained. A master plan should be put in place by the end of the year. The park is focusing on an improved visitorsʼ center and expanded camp grounds. Two other things to look for in the future: a public boat ramp and a childrenʼs camp.

Next year, parks throughout North Carolina will celebrate the centennial of the N.C. Parks and Recreation Department. There will be centennial events in every park, centennial merchandise available for purchase and 100-mile hiking challenges. In closing, Murphy reminded chamber members, “Parks are an investment in our state. SADF hosts Dickens Oct. 3 A reading of Charles Dickensʼs “Doctor Marigold,” featuring his great-great-grandson, Gerald Charles Dickens, will take place Oct. 3 at the Swansboro Town Hall Community Room. Beginning at 7 p.m., Dickens will deliver a once in a lifetime brush with literary history that you wonʼt want to miss. Saltwater Grill will provide coffee, hot chocolate and sweets. Tickets for “Doctor Marigold” are available online at www.sadfnc.org or at the chamber ofﬁce. Adult tickets are $15 and student tickets are $12 each, or two for $20.

Costume Ball Get your costumes ready! The SADF is also preparing to host its annual Halloween Costume Ball Oct. 24 at the Cape Carteret Aquatic and Wellness Center. This yearʼs event will be co-hosted by the Cape Carteret Trail Committee. Funds raised will be shared between the CC Trail Committee and SADF, which continues to raise money for various community projects and programs. The SADF is a nonproﬁt organization working to im-

prove the quality of life for Swansboro area residents and visitors.

Just like grandma, and grandpa! Alaina Ladner and Kimberly Turner are best friends. Itʼs easy to tell. They laugh at the same inside jokes. They ﬁnish each otherʼs sentences. And they have the same passion for baking gained from an equally passionate grandparent. “I learned to bake watching my grandmother,” Turner explained. “She was the cake lady, and when she passed away I got a lot of her cake supplies.” For Ladner, it was her grandfather. “I liked to watch him,” she remembered. “He was always baking. And he would let me make what I like to call ʻmy concoctions.ʼ” So, Ladner and Turner, (military spouses who became friends while stationed in Hawaii), began their respective baking businesses out of their homes at ﬁrst. But teaming up seemed to be where the business was leading them when both found themselves relocated to the same military base again (Camp Lejeune). Word of their talents spread and customers began to request a storefront for the array of cakes and cupcakes and other sweet treats. The next move was obvious: a bakery partnership in Swansboro, and Frosted Cakery LLC was born. “We really feel we ﬁlled a void in Swansboro,” Turner

stated. The bakery, conveniently located next to the Swansboro Post Ofﬁce, is Swansboroʼs only bakery where cakes, cupcakes and cookies are created fresh on site. Now, the two –––––––– Spotlight begin their days at 7 a.m., baking –––––––– and decorating their wares to ﬁll both the glass cases for walk-ins and any special orders. By 10 a.m., when the bakery opens, the aroma of vanilla ﬁlls the air, tempting passersby every time the door opens. Basic ﬂavors, like vanilla and chocolate, are always available. What would a bakery be without them? But this bakery is ﬁlled with more than just tradition. Try the Maple bacon (brown sugar cake topped with maple butter cream frosting and bacon), the coffee bean (vanilla cake topped with coffee, butter cream frosting and chocolatecovered coffee beans), or the burning love (chocolate cake with cayenne pepper and cinnamon butter cream frosting). Of course, thereʼs always that Southern classic, red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Yummy! On an average week, over 100 dozen cupcakes are bought by their loyal customer base. “Everything we bake is made fresh to order … never frozen,”

Candidate forums slated Nov. 3 is municipal Election Day and the Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce is making plans to help residents get to know the candidates. Candidate forums are planned on Oct. 15 for Cape Carteret and on Oct. 22 for Swansboro. Cape Carteretʼs forum will feature candidates for mayor and commissioner. It will take place 6-8 p.m. at Cape Carteretʼs Debbie E. Stanley Board of Commissioners Room. Swansboroʼs forum will feature commissioner candidates (there is no mayorʼs race this election) 6-8 p.m. at the Swansboro Town Hall Community Room.

Using social media requires restraint At some point, we all have the urge to utilize social media to express our opinions on a variety of topics and issues. From political to personal, it is harder than ever to escape the impulse to voice our thoughts in this new public forum. I recently found this article that outlines a few key points for what I call “Social Media Etiquette.” I greatly endorse the use of social media in business, but also want to point out the importance of responsible use. What a person says or does on social media can come back to haunt him or her with regard to the impression they create with prospective employers and customers. Questionable antics and comments may reﬂect negatively on a person without him or her even realizing it. According to a study by Reppler, a social media monitoring service, 91 percent of employers use social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to screen prospective employees. Many people are completely unaware how others view them through their social media proﬁles and usage, but social media proﬁles give away more information about a personʼs character and personality than many people would ever imagine. Even seemingly innocent remarks and observations can be misconstrued. Use of profanity or offering commentary on controversial subjects may be a personʼs right. However, such comments may not sit well with prospective employers or customers. Some may think the solution is not to have proﬁles on the popular social media sites. But avoiding social media entirely can send the wrong message to prospective employers. It may suggest that you are not a person who is current with the latest trends in technology and may give employers the impression that you are not adept at keeping up with the changing times. The key is ﬁnding the right balance with social media. The following are a few tips to ensure your social media usage does not do more harm than good … • Do not post or tweet information that should be kept private. If you would not tell

intimate secrets to another person, especially an employer, do not convey these details to your group of “friends.” • Recognize that itʼs not always your comments that can affect perceptions of you. The friends you choose to accept and socialize with via social media can impact how others view you. If friends are prone to vulgarity and off-color commentary, employers may surmise that this type of behavior is acceptable to you. Screen friends and block those who do not meet your standards. • Know that security features on social media applications change frequently. Itʼs important to know just how private your information may be. For example, if you are tagged in another personʼs photo, people outside of your friendsʼ list may be able to see that image. You have to police your sites and lock down the information as you see ﬁt, only posting what is appropriate for the general public. • Do not complain about customers, your job or boss publicly. Even if your boss is not on your list of friends, he or she may still learn about your comments through gossip. While verbal complaints with others may not be accurately tracked back to you, text is hard evidence to discredit. • Use social media as a networking tool to ﬁnd other like-minded individuals in the same ﬁelds. Join industry-based groups and organizations so that you can share your ideas. Further expanding your reach through blogs and websites can also help in a job hunt. Social media is here to stay, making many details of peopleʼs lives more public, so exercise caution with social media so your career is not negatively affected.
