Five Army Families who were ordered to depart from Izmir, Turkey received a warm welcome at Wiesbaden emergency inprocessing events April 4 and 8 to help them settle into their new home. They, and hundreds of others, were recently relocated from the region due to ongoing security concerns. Col. Mary Martin, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden commander, attended the Army Community Service’s-hosted activities, assessing the Families’ needs to provide a seamless transition. She explained to everyone that support agencies garrison-wide stand ready to meet the needs of these new arrivals, along with underscoring the importance of everyone coming together to welcome them. “They are part of the USAG Wiesbaden community now,” Martin said. Most of the Families departing Turkey were sent to Ramstein Air Force Base, in Kaiserslautern, Germany. But these five Families preferred to come here, to a community where they knew they would feel most comfortable, said Olivia Kreuttner, one of the newly arrived Family members. “We requested to come to Wiesbaden because we wanted an Army post,” she said. “I can’t say enough how truly wonderful everyone has been. And Colonel Martin has been doing everything she can to help us settle in.” The women were able to attend the briefing while their children were in school, already getting settled in to their new classrooms. Although they were vying for a trophy, the SHARP Amazing Race gave participants a better understanding of how they can help prevent sexual assaults. heats at various locations on Clay Kaserne, followed by a set of physical challenges. Sprinting from station to station teams tested their knowledge about sexual assault and prevention. Challenges taught participants about the prevalence of sexual assault—1 in 6, another highlighted the importance of bystander intervention, and another demonstrated how alcohol can impair judgement. The event was a creative way to teach community members about a serious subject, said Bill Mottley, SHARP program manager.

“The Army has been inundated with SHARP trainings over the last few years,” he said. “This event takes the learning experience outside of a PowerPoint-driven classroom. The SHARP Amazing Race provided participants the opportunity to reinforce their SHARP knowledge without calling it ‘training.’ ” Capt. Logan McDarment, team captain for the “Bandits” from 66th Military Intelligence Brigade, who won the challenge, said the event

Aukamm parking

Anonymous said: Due to ongoing construction and staging areas in residential parking lots, residential parking places are being taken in Aukamm due to sports practice. There are areas clearly marked on Hainerberg for residential parking only. The few buildings near the baseball fields are due this same respect as others receive on Hainerberg. We do not require all of the spaces but should be treated equally, especially since the construction nearby is taking the lot allocated for the field parking. Response: While we’re very sorry for the inconvenience, unfortunately, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden is unable to assign dedicated parking

spaces to residents in Aukamm housing because the streets and parking areas belong to the City of Wiesbaden. The garrison is also unable to assign staging areas to construction projects in public parking areas. If desired, contractors must coordinate staging directly with the City of Wiesbaden, and will then be charged a fee by the city. The garrison may assign staging areas to construction projects in family housing areas where land is consigned to the garrison. While staging areas cause inconveniences, they are necessary to complete projects timely and on budget. DPW housing approves these locations and provides residents advanced notification. USAG Wiesbaden is able to assign parking spaces to residents in Hainerberg because the streets and parking areas were consigned to the garrison in conjunction with enclosing the site.

Both schools assigned ambassadors to the new students, and school T-shirts and school supplies were provided, she said. “The reception from the Wiesbaden community has been fabulous,” Fox said. “It felt like coming home. It was very personal. People who greeted us knew our names. They knew our children’s names. My family arrived on my, and my oldest daughter’s birthday. We were greeted with birthday cards and a basket of birthday goodies.” Just about every organization garrison-wide has come together to provide support for the evacuated families, said Tania Cuervo, ACS division chief. TRICARE waives PCM requirements for dependents departing Turkey TRICARE.mil The Department of Defense is evacuating about 700 family members of active duty service members from southern Turkey, due to security concerns in the region. TRICARE is waiving the primary care manager referral requirement for all evacuated beneficiaries. This will help them get medical care while away from their homes and doctors. The evacuated families will relocate to various locations overseas and in the U.S. The waiver will last 180 days from March 30 through September 30, 2016. Normally, TRICARE Overseas Program Prime and TOP Prime Remote beneficiaries need a referral from their PCM to get any specialty care. While evacuated, beneficiaries can contact the military treatment facility closest to them to get primary care. If they stay overseas, but are not close to an MTF, they can contact International SOS, the TOP contractor, for help. If they are in the U.S. and not close to an MTF, they should contact the International SOS TOP Regional Call Center or the appropriate regional contractor. If evacuated beneficiaries decide not to return to the region, they can change their TRICARE enrollment to their new permanent location by contacting the regional contractor for that area.

The U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Change of Command ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Clay Fitness Center, April 22, at 3:30 p.m. Garrison Commander, Col. Mary L. Martin, will relinquish command to Col. Todd J. Fish. The Wiesbaden military community is invited to attend.

Passport processing

U.S. Consulate representatives will be on Clay Kaserne to process tourist passports and Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) applications, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in building 1029. (Processing will take place in a room near the library. Signage will be posted.) All applicants must bring a typed application form available at http://travel.state.gov/. Fees must be paid with a Money Order or cashier’s check. Personal checks, dollars, or Euros will not be accepted. First Time Adult Passport is $135. Adult Tourist Renewal is $110; Child Tourist Renewal is $105; CRBA and Tourist Passport is $205; and CRBA and no fee passport is $100. Applicants should bring all original documents. Frankfurt USO closure

The USO at the Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) is permanently closed as of April 14. Over the past three years, the center has seen a decline in the use of the facility as a result of the shift of arriving military personnel and their families from FRA to Ramstein Air Base. The location now primarily serves as a spot for visitors to wait for commercial shuttles to local installations. Limited and costly options to implement force protection and security measure contributed to the decision.

Practice bicycle safety

Bicycle operators and passengers on U.S. military installations must wear an approved safety helmet properly fastened under the chin. Other bicycle safety rules include not using cell phones or wearing listening devices; using a headlight that emits a white light and a taillight that emits a red light; wearing light-colored clothing or reflective accessories when riding at night or in low light; and bicycle wheels must have two reflectors mounted 180 degrees apart on the spokes. Bicycle pedals must have reflectors designed and placed to be visible from the front and rear of the bicycle. NOTE: Local national personnel are not required to wear a safety helmet when riding a bicycle on U.S. military installations in Germany. Wearing a safety helmet is, however, highly recommended.

By U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Every April during National Child Abuse Prevention month communities take action to recommit to providing safe, stable, and nurturing environments for children that are free from abuse and neglect. This year, Soldiers, Families and civilians can show their support by picking a pinwheel from one of the gardens planted in facilities throughout the Wiesbaden community. U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Family Advocacy Program and a local Girl Scout troop teamed up to create over a dozen pinwheel gardens for the initiative. “The collaboration with the Girl Scouts shows how children can play a positive role in promoting a healthy community,” said Sara Clow, Family Advocacy Program manager. The Girl Scouts painted the boxes and helped prepare the gardens, which include messages of prevention. “The collaboration also helps the FAP reinforce the child-abuse prevention program,” Clow said. In Army communities, ACS-FAP is charged with providing education and awareness to help prevent domestic abuse, child abuse and neglect. “Many people become uncomfortable when they hear the primary purpose of the ACS-FAP. The discomfort is a result of the stigma related to both child and spousal abuse,” said Clow. Clow says the ACS-FAP offers a multi-faceted approach for child abuse prevention which includes annual mandatory training, resources and education along with a multi-disciplinary staff to work with children and their families. The FAP operates as a commanders program, supporting commanders and senior enlisted advisors ensuring FAP policies, procedures and leadership responsibilities are understood at the top. “Efforts of preventing child abuse can be tackled in various ways. The important thing to remember is that

Pinwheels for Prevention campaign started in 2008 and grew from the need to create a national symbol for child abuse prevention. The organization Prevent Child Abuse American says the pinwheel connects to the child in us all and stands for the chance at the healthy, happy and full lives all children deserve. Pinwheel gardens can be found at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center, Health Clinic, Library, Post Office, Dining Facility, AFN, Chapel and all CYSS facilities on Clay Kaserne; and at the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center, Chapel, and all CYSS facilities on Hainerberg. William Moore agreed, adding that the turnout for the event proved the SHARP program is being supported and taken seriously. “At a minimum, it shows that the SHARP program was able to successfully harness the competitive spirit of Soldiers to get involved with and excited about an event that brings important and difficult issues to the surface in the context of an inter-unit competition.” And activities like this make a difference because they get people talking, Mottley said. “The event promotes positive respectful dialogue regarding SHARP. Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time. As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, families are spending more time participating in outdoor activities which can lead to accidents. To help prevent those slips, trips and falls that can spoil a great summer, the Soldiers and Families of the 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment participated in a safety stand down day at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield on Clay Kaserne April 7. “Safety is a mindset that is ever-present both on and off duty. Most accidents are preventable. Prevention begins with education,” said Maj. Andrew Evans, 1-214th Aviation Regiment executive officer. The hands-on accident prevention training coordinated by the battalion’s safety officer Chief Warrant Officer 3 Dustin Ramsey, took place outside of the classroom engaging both

Soldiers and Family members at five different activity stations. Participants learned how to safely, and correctly use different fire extinguishers from Fire inspector Ed Cobey. To avoid getting your shoes wet, never spray a fire extinguisher against the wind, he said. At other stations, subject matter experts demonstrated the effects and dangers of alcohol and drugs. To simulate being intoxicated, Soldiers donned specially prepared eye glasses or “beer goggles” and attempted to hit a target with a ball. Representatives with the German Polizei also participated in the event and explained ways to make your home safer. Birthe Fink, with the 4th Polizei precinct in Wiesbaden said the most commonly asked question is about owning a firearm in Germany, which is different than in the United States. Participants also looked at ways the Army keeps Soldiers safe. Staff Sgt. Casey Clevenger and Sgt. Alejandro Arredondo, medevac crewmembers, invited

The demonstration showed that anyone can help save a person’s life by applying basic cardiopulmonary

resuscitation or CPR. Only a few feet away, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Steven Larmay encouraged volunteers to climb inside an Apache helicopter and get a glimpse of his work space.

The day ended with a demonstration from the 525th Military Working Dog Detachment showing that accident prevention can be incorporated in all we do and even dogs need regular safety training, too.

By far, the largest construction project being managed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District is the $990 million replacement of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the 86th Medical Group Clinic with a new consolidated medical facility on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. USACE is working closely with the German government, Defense Health Agency and U.S. Army Health Facility Planning Agency to build the new medical center. Site preparation is underway, and the German Construction Agency in Weilerbach recently awarded a contract to the architect-engineer firm HDR TMK to complete the next design phase on the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center Replacement. “The new Department of Defense medical project reflects DOD’s commitment to exceptional care for U.S. service members and their families for decades to come,” Lloyd Caldwell, USACE director of Military Programs, said during a site visit with German officials in December. Together with the 86th Medical

Service members who serve or have served in Iraq or Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve will receive the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in Tampa, Florida, March 30. Carter announced the new award during the U.S. Central Command change-of-command ceremony. Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III transferred the command’s flag to Army Gen. Joe Votel. “It is fitting then, that as we mark the change of command between these two leaders, that we introduce the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal,” Carter said. “I am pleased to announce today, by the president’s order and upon the chairman’s and my recommendation, that our sailors, Soldiers, airmen, and Marines serving in Iraq and Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve are now eligible for this medal and distinction.” The award is retroactive to June 15, 2014, and is for service members based in Iraq or Syria, those who flew missions over those countries, and those who served in contiguous waters for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days, officials said. The award distinctly recognizes service members battling terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria. Service members who were killed or were medically evacuated from those countries due to wounds or injuries immediately qualify for the award, as do members who engaged in combat. Previously, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal recognized service in Iraq and Syria, and service members in neighboring countries such as Turkey will continue to receive that award.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the creation of the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, shown here, March 30. The president establishes campaign medals for large-scale and long-duration combat actions or operations. Inherent Resolve meets the criteria, officials said. The entire operational area has been subject to lethal combat operations. U.S. forces are executing an extensive air campaign in the region. A U.S. division-plus force is providing command and control, intelligence, and other advisory services. The award is separate from the Iraq Campaign Medal awarded for service during operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, officials said.

The Department of Defense Voluntary Education Program and the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) announced the launch of a pilot tutoring program that will provide service members with tutoring support at no cost, anytime, anywhere. “If a service member is struggling with a college course or simply needs help with a homework assignment, this DODfunded tool offers a place to go to get answers,” said Jeff Allen, DANTES director. The program provides around-the-clock, online, tutoring services for active duty service members, Coast Guard members and full/part time National Guard and Reserve component members. Some Family members are also eligible to use the tutoring services. The program is available online, and provides one-to-one tutoring with educators able to help with more than 40 college subjects, including algebra, statistics, physiology, and more. The tutors provide help with all types of homework assignments and test preparation. Tutors and students communicate in a secure online classroom using text chat and by drawing on an interactive whiteboard. There are no webcams or telephones used and no personal information is shared between the tutor and student. Students can access the online service using any internetenabled device, including smart phones and tablets. If it’s just a quick question, tutors are available on-demand, or students can schedule future tutor sessions or upload papers for offline review. “The Defense Department wants Service members to be successful in pursuing professional development,” said Allen. “DDD currently maintains a variety of education resources to help members pursue their education. Tutoring services are being piloted to further explore the addition of this type of tool as another way to help service members succeed in their military careers.”

More than 250 Soldiers competed in the 2016 U.S. Army Small Arms “All Army” Championship, March 15-19, on ranges here run by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Sgt. Demetrios Iannios, California Army National Guard, was the overall individual champion. The overall team champion was the Illinois Army National Guard. Team members included Sgt. 1st Class David Perdew, Sgt. 1st Class John Stockton, Staff Sgt. Brandon Hornung and Staff Sgt. Jacob Blount. Their coach was Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kyle Gleason. The All Army, hosted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in conjunction with the Maneuver Center of Excellence, develops combat firing skills at the entry and intermediate levels and recognizes superior skill at the highest level. Soldiers compete in separate classes — consisting of cadet, novice, open and professional — based on previous competition experience. Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Taylor, marksmanship master trainer and small arms master gunner, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, said competitors experienced diverse levels of marksmanship. “I think it’s exceptional the way they use the different types of events in the All Army, from the combat rifle matches to the National matches, because it shows the differences in marksmanship -- how accurate you have to be in the standing position or how your team has to assemble and how they have to fill their magazines,” said Taylor, who is a 19-year Army veteran from Pittsburgh and was the coach of the 82nd Airborne Division teams. Soldiers competed as individuals and on four-person teams in events like: pistol and rifle excellence in competition matches; combat rifle and pistol courses of fire; multi-gun courses of fire and an Infantry Team Match, among others. Taylor said he attended a Marksmanship Master Trainer Course at Fort Drum, New York, last year and at the conclusion of training, instructors talked about the

2016 All Army. He said they suggested all the MMTC graduates develop marksmanship teams at their units to compete against the rest of the Army. Taylor said that’s exactly what he did. The 82nd Airborne Division’s teams were culled from 30 Soldiers who answered the call for marksmen throughout the Division. Pfc. Cody Nestor, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, who has been a Soldier since January 2015, participated in sporter rifle competitions for four years on his high school’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps shooting team and continues to help coach shooting team members during his time off. Nestor, a West Virginia, native, demonstrated his marksmanship skills during the All Army by winning The Top Active Duty Soldier award in novice class. Nestor said the best matches were the National Rifle Match Course EIC and the Infantry Team Match because of the demands on the shooters. “Any time you get up off the ground with the rifle, it challenges you more and separates the competition — you’ve got some who are great in prone, but in standing, they don’t perform as well,” he said of the National Rifle Match. Another Airborne Division Soldier, Sgt. 1st Class Keyton Brown, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, has 27 years combined military experience in the Army and Air Force — with more than 20 years in the Army. Brown, of Tyler, Texas, said a lot of Army units shoot short-range distances only and don’t learn to make wind estimations and practice good shot placement at longer ranges. “It seems every day I am learning something about shooting, about the way I shoot and how to improve. I am going to take all of that home, keep practicing it and using it, and help younger Soldiers out so they can become better,” Brown said. USAMU coaches, instructors and shooters provided rifle and pistol Small Arms Firing Schools to all competitors throughout the All Army.

A visit to Germany’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Geierlay is a family and pocket-book friendly outing that can be enjoyed by all ages. The Hängeseilbrücke just opened in October 2015 and is quite impressive at 360 meters long and 100 meters high. A visit to cross the bridge is free; however parking in the town of Geierlay will cost 2€. There is a 1.7 kilometer walk to the bridge from the visitor center (Kastellaun Straße 23, 56290 Mörsdorf) Strollers are possible on the walk, but are not recommended to take across the bridge.

Gold Star spouse strives to find niche Husbands make up small, but growing group By Jessica Marie Ryan Family and MWR Command

Kelvin Triggs considers himself to be a loner. His days are busy as he manages a small business and takes care of his teenage son Nick. He says that it is hard for him to associate with new people outside of work and church. Triggs’ life forever changed in 2011 when he became a widower. His wife, Master Sgt. Marcia Triggs, was an Army journalist assigned to the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs in Chicago, Illinois. A veteran himself, Triggs suddenly went from being a military spouse to a Gold Star spouse — the unique name given to surviving Family members because of the gold pins they receive from the military. Immediately after Marcia’s passing, Army Survivor Outreach Services coordinators contacted him, and he connected with Lori Dean, a support coordinator at the Fort Sam Houston office. “It’s comforting that I can call Lori and talk to her about anything,” he said. While he’s had many oneon-one sessions with Dean and other program coordinators, he remains hesitant about participating in social activities and meeting other survivors. Gold Star husbands like Triggs are, after all, a small but growing group in the survivor community. “With the way society

Many of these spouses are veterans, retirees or activeduty service members,” said Dean. “They are all survivors, and that’s what really matters.” Noticeable changes are already happening. The national observance Gold Star Wives’ Day, held on April 5 of each year, recently evolved to Gold Star Spouses’ Day as directed by U.S. Department of Defense guidance. According to Dean, husbands are also eligible to join organizations such as the Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., but many men like Triggs are reluctant. “For long time, I thought I was a circle trying to fit into a square peg, because the group was predominantly women,” Triggs said. “I didn’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable if I started tagging along to the events.” With the SOS program coordinators’ encouragement, he is now making an effort to meet other survivors. Similarly, in response to the increased number of male spouses interested in SOS, Dean and her staff members are currently planning events

I can’t blame them, because they might feel out of place being one of the few males at these outings.” Cheryl Lankford, a Gold Star wife and president of

the GSWA, Inc.’s Lone Star Chapter, is open to having male spouses involved in the community, because they are an underrepresented voice. “I absolutely love that more male spouses are involved [in the Gold Star community], because they bring a new perspective to being a survivor,” she said. “As surviving spouses, we so many times depends on the advice, council and input of others who have had our same

experience and have traveled this difficult path.” Triggs made a promise to himself to connect with more survivors this year. Although he is still a little apprehensive, he is hopeful about meeting them soon. “I don’t know what will happen when I meet another male spouse survivor,” he said. “We probably won’t focus on the past but on the present and the future instead.”

7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs

Working side by side with the German Bundeswehr and local disaster relief organizations, Army Reserve Soldiers of C Co., 457th Civil Affairs Battalion, planned and executed their first multinational training exercise April 2 at the 7th U.S. Army Joint Training Command Training Support Center. Over the past six months, the Cobra Team and their partners have been planning Exercise Cobra Strike, said Charlie Company Commander and Tennessee native Capt. David Esra. The exercise uses a destructive earthquake scenario, on a resource rich island in the fictional country of Arnland. The scenario was designed to test the disaster relief and mass casualty skill sets of his Soldiers, as well as those of the German Bundeswehr, Red Cross and Federal Agency for Technical Relief (Technisches Hilfswerk, or THW). “It was a great opportunity to highlight our partnerships with our host nation, both military and other organizations, such as the German THW and Red Cross,” Esra said. Using role players from the Red Cross, a local college and even family members, the goal was to make the training as real as possible. “Role players will be in make-up, teams will be using equipment they would use in the real world, and we even have pyrotechnics to simulate a catastrophic explosion,” Esra explained. “My intent for Cobra Strike is to prepare our Civil Affairs Soldiers for participation in the

For Army Reserve Soldier Spc. Daniel Donaldson, the benefit comes from training directly with organizations he would encounter in the event of a real-work crisis. “An important part of Army Civil Affairs is ability to work effectively

with foreign agencies and local leaders in an affected region,” he said. “Hands on training like this, and the relationships we forge are more effective and engaging than a classroom power point presentation; I love doing this kind of training on my weekends.” During the exercise Donaldson worked with the Bundeswehr’s Major Medical Clinic Cologne-Wahn to evaluate and treat casualties brought in by ambulance. An event like Cobra Strike also benefits all volunteer organizations like the Red Cross and THW. Ralf Essman, a THW commander, worked in their mobile command center during the exercise

directing agencies to solve the types of infrastructure issues a crisis presents. “Things like the drinking water, power and search and rescue teams are what we engage in during a disaster,” he said. Based out of Mainz, Germany, THW has been successfully training with the U.S. Army for the past three years. “For an all-volunteer group, opportunities like this are very exciting,” Essman continued, “Training with other organizations exposes you to scenarios you wouldn’t normally experience during our normal classes; the best kind of training.” Esra expects a multinational training event, like Cobra Strike, to be part of their annual training schedule in years to come. “The lessons learned from Cobra Strike with be crucial in driving the planning of next year’s event,” he said. “We will also use the lessons learned to increase the effectiveness of our participation at Exercise Anakoda 2016.” Esra also noted that the Serbian military has expressed interest in using the Cobra Strike scenario to train their Civil-Military Co-operation forces. “Each unit involved was able to train specific objectives and learn about our partners capabilities simultaneously,” Esra said. “This interoperability is right in line with what we must do while deployed. We are never deploying on a mission without having to work alongside our allies. This one day event demonstrated the Strong Europe spirit and our goal to make our training realistic.”

EUCOM announces European Reassurance plan By U.S. European Command Public Affairs As part of the United States’ commitment to increased assurance and deterrence, U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) will begin receiving continuous troop rotations of U.S.-based armored brigade combat teams (ABCT) to the European theater in February 2017, bringing the total Army presence in Europe up to three fully-manned Army brigades. As discussed during the announcement of the Fiscal Year 2017 European Reassurance Initiative (ERI) budget proposal, the Army has decided to begin

storing “static” equipment, known as Army Prepositioned Stocks (APS), within Europe for contingency operations. General Phil Breedlove, U.S. European Command (EUCOM) commander said, “This is a big step in enhancing the Army’s rotational presence and increasing their combat equipment in Europe. This Army implementation plan continues to demonstrate our strong and balanced approach to reassuring our NATO Allies and Partners in the wake of an aggressive Russia in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. This means our Allies and Partners will see more

capability - they will see a more frequent presence of an armored brigade with more modernized equipment in their countries.” The ABCTs will be on nine-month rotations from the U.S. and will bring their own modern equipment to conduct exercises across Atlantic Resolve countries. These rotations will demonstrate our ability to rapidly deploy equipment and forces to Europe by sending U.S.-based rotational forces with their currently assigned equipment. This equipment will be the most modernized the Army has to offer and over the next year will replace the current

training equipment in Europe. When the first rotational armored brigade combat team arrives early next year, the equipment currently used by rotational forces, known as the European Activity Set (EAS), will remain in Europe, be repaired, upgraded, and converted into the core of the APS we announced in February. We plan to have APS stored in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. This equipment will enable rapid deployment of ground forces in response to contingencies throughout the region. It provides additional combat power, if and when needed.

For your health Military children use website to connect, cope with stress By Military Health System Children deal with all types of growing pains and learning experiences that leave lasting impressions, and military children often have additional stressors. The Military Kids Connect (MKC) website and online communities, created by the Department of Defense National Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2), offer interactive resources that help combat mental health issues. The site helps military young people connect with one another, learn coping skills and share their unique experiences. “The mission of the website is to improve the quality of life of military children as they face the psychological challenges of living in the military life and culture,” said Dr. Kelly Blasko, a lead psychologist at T2. “It was designed so [children] can learn about feeling stressed and anxious, and it provides them with some tools to alleviate some of this stress.” The site, aimed at children ages 6 to 17 and separated into three age-appropriate modules – kids (age 6 to 8), tweens (age 9 to 12) and teens (age 13 to 17) – was designed to fill a gap in mental health resources available solely for children who grow up in military families. Many of these children have parents who are deployed or transitioning back from deployment, which can increase confusion, depression and anxiety. Other families move regularly

Military Kids Connect, a website for military youth, features stories and interactive features for children growing up in the military culture. Children can share their experiences and learn coping skills to deal with issues such as deployment, relocation, and other topics unique to being in a military family. from base to base, with children finding it difficult to adjust and get comfortable. These scenarios are addressed by allowing children to connect with others in similar circumstances and to access resources so they can learn to better handle these situations. The MKC online communities for tweens and teens provide resources, such as a message board, stress-management tools and self-expression activities, which youth can use to deal with emotional situations.

For example, many of these children are fearful when separated from their parents for extended periods, and they can learn how others have coped by using the message boards to discuss their feelings and get feedback. Personal story videos from their peers, who share their experiences with deployment, health and other regularly discussed topics, can help create a dialogue about coping strategies. These dialogues can assist in creating a support system to alleviate some of the worries.

“The message boards were intended to start conversations about what their struggles were, and that is one way to get peer support,” said Blasko. “The connection there is that kids become role models for other kids, and it often helps a child to hear what their peers are saying. It makes it feel normal.” Frequently visited areas of the site include the “What Would You Do?” section in the tweens and teens modules, where young people discuss their decision-making processes handling dilemmas that are common to military youth.Also popular is the “Tough Topics” area, which features animated graphic novels and feedback on the difficult situations military families endure, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Parents, caregivers and educators are encouraged to use the sections designed for them to find out how to help their children cope and to learn what issues their children are talking about. Adults can use the tools to develop strategies to help improve the well-being of their children learn how to talk with them about difficult topics. “The website is put in the context of military life,” Blasko said. “When you’re on the website, you know you’re on a military site, so kids and parents can relate to that. There are uniforms and military language is used, and that’s one thing that makes Military Kids Connect unique.”

sues, such as blurred vision, headaches, sore eyes, headaches, muscle strain and dry eye. “When you are using smartphones, both the screens and what we are trying to see are typically very small, and this taxes any individual’s ability to focus on and resolve the content being viewed,” said Felix Barker, O.D., an optometrist with the Department of VeteransAffairs who works

with the DoD/VA Vision Center of Excellence. “For example, if you’re looking at the same print on a computer screen, not only is the screen larger but so is the print, making a computer monitor much easier to see than a smartphone.” Barker also said smartphones require holding the device closer to the eyes, increasing the demands on vision. “The closer a person holds something to the face, the more the eyes try to converge, meaning that they turn closer together,” he said. “When you spend an excessive amount of time on smartphones, you can put a lot of stress on your vision and cause blurred or even double vision.” Use of smartphones can also cause another eye-related problem: sleeplessness. Many contain blue light, which can disrupt the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate the sleep cycle. Barker suggests limiting smartphone usage at bedtime. “Our brains begin to produce melatonin when we are ready to go to sleep, and blue light interferes with that process,” he said. He highlighted other key factors for service members that can affect their

success using mobile devices. “There are a significant number of warfighters who have been exposed to blast injuries who have vision problems,” he said. “They can often have trouble converging their eyes, and being able to focus their vision. Or they may think their cognitive ability to perform daily tasks has been inhibited by the blast injury, when in fact poor performance is due to poor vision.” Age is another factor that can affect the ability to use mobile devices. “There’s a natural loss of visual focus that occurs in our midlives,” said Barker. “Around the age of 40 it becomes critical, and that’s about the time when people need reading glasses.” Smartphone use can aggravate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder as well. “Someone with PTSD may be confused about what is really limiting their ability to perform routine visual tasks, like viewing information on their smartphones,” he said. “They may be thinking, ‘I can’t cope.’ This is another reason why it’s very important — especially for people who have been deployed — to get regular vision examinations.”

For many military spouses it can be extremely challenging to deal with separation. Separation not only plays a role during deployment, long work days and challenging work times can take a toll on some marriages. In appreciation of military spouses in the battalion, Lt. Col. Michael P. Bentley from 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment brought back a very special program, April 7, to give spouses the opportunity of a lifetime — to fly on an Army aircraft. The Spouses Orientation Flight Program is a provision inArmy Regulation 95-1, that under strict guidelines allows spouses of rated and non-rated crewmembers to particpate. “Building this appreciation helps families understand that it takes time and attention to detail to keep these aircrafts flying, and gives them a glimpse into the critical role Army Aviation plays during peacetime and during contingency operations” said Bentley. Bentley’s focus is on family integration, because he realizes that family stability plays a key role in readiness. Forty-four spouses took the one-time opportunity and got a glimpse behind

the scenes of the preparation and execution of a flight on board a Black Hawk helicopter. “This is the very first time I get such an amazing opportunity,” said military spouse Audra Albert, who has been married to Maj. Cameron Albert for more than ten years. Before the spouses got into the Black Hawk helicopters, Bentley thanked them for coming out and taking this “once in a lifetime opportunity.” Then, the 44 spouses were splitt into groups of eight and were introduced to the security guidelines of the aircraft. Most important of all, they were told to completely trust the professional crew on board and simply enjoy the flight. 55 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF MK MÖBEL

About 55 years ago, on March 25, 1961 the company KringsMaraite was founded by Albert Krings and Martha Maraite. During this time there were no showrooms available, so the furniture was displayed at the “Hünniger Saal - Johanns Terren” (an adjacent room to the family property). The furniture store expanded in 1963, 1966 and 1969. In 1963 a two-story furniture store of 4736 square feet was constructed beside the Krings-Maraite family home that had already been built in 1956. In 1966 and 1969 an additional

two-story space was added to the original building, adding 5381 square feet and 7534 square feet to the showroom space. In 1971 the store was again extended with an additional 10763 square feet. In the last great building phase in 1973 a basement was added measuring 23680 square feet. In ten years, the Krings-Maraite family extended their Showroom from 4736 square feet to 53819 square feet. On July 22, 1979, the whole store and the family house burned down to the ground (see picture below).

Only the vehicle fleet survived the fire.
