Introduction

1 Introduction This document is describing the concept, installation procecure and configuration of WinCan8 on a single workstation. Installing, configuring and applying WinCan8 in a network environment is precisely described in a separate manual. The documentation is primarily intended for system administrators, database administrators, software specialists and others working in corporate IT departments. Readers of this user guide must be familiar with general Windows functions and terminology. This implies working with keyboard and mouse, editing text boxes as well as the comprehension of terms like hard drive, folder, file, database, fields, records etc. Administrators must furthermore be familiar with the system settings of Microsoft WINDOWS and know how to install drivers, software etc.

2 System requirements The application WinCan8 is exclusively running on the operating systems Windows XP (Professional, SP2/SP3), Windows Vista (Business/Ultimate) and Windows 7 (Professional/Ultimate)

ONLY the 32 bit versions of these operationg systems will be supported. According to the hardware used on your PC (video encoding cards, control and entry devices) and the type of target database the corresponding drivers have to be installed in advance.

3 Module overview WinCan8 is installed with separate Setup packages according to the single modules purchased before as well as to the country specific language packages supported by the WinCan8 module range:

This concept makes ordering and installing of additional modules much easier. Furthermore the download of updates via Internet will run faster. Which setup packages to install depends upon the purchased modules.

Page 3/22

Applying WinCan8 in a TV truck

4 Applying WinCan8 in a TV truck Nearly every TV van has got its own camera and textgenerator systems. Therefore WinCan8 must be installed licensed and configured separately on every vehicle PC. These are treated as single workstations NOT connected to a server network.

5 Applying WinCan8 in an office environment In an office environment nearly every PC (CLIENT) is connected in one way or the other to a local network. WinCan8 still must be installed on every CLIENT, the application can be licensed however in one single step via a network dongle plugged into a USB-port on the SERVER:

Larger companies or town administrations sometimes are working with special server systems like MSSQL or ORACLE. WinCan8 can be embedded in these server environments too. Read more about this in the documentation WinCan8 and server systems (in preparation)

Page 4/22

Installation of WinCan8

6 Installation of WinCan8 6.1 Prerequisites Check the following issues before installing WinCan8:

 The user on the target PC must be logged in as system administrator. When operating with Windows 7/VISTA this account has to be activated first (p. 22-23)!

 Download and installation of all the updates for your Windows operating system  Installation of the latest driver version of the graphics board used  Installation of the encoding card driver (VITEC card, MobileCap124 or other encoding cards supported as listed in the documentation WinCan Entry, page4)

 Installation of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, SP2 (already built-in in Windows 7/VISTA)

 Installation of Microsoft DirectX 9c or higher  Installation of Windows MediaPlayer 11: (already integrated in Windows VISTA und Windows 7)

6.2 Installation process The WinCan8 installation files are present as so called setup packages that you will have to install one after the other. The installation must absolutely be performed in the correct order as described below:

6.2.1 WinCan8 Core installation

Make sure that any local WinCan8 dongle is unplugged before starting the installation. Network dongles can be plugged in during the installation. Log in as system administrator, double click on the file icon shown above and confirm every step given by the wizard hitting the button NEXT until the dialogue with the button FINISH is popping up. RESTART your PC.

6.2.2 WinCan8 main installation Log in as system administrator and double click on the file WinCan8Setup.EXE that will launch the installation of the basic components of WinCan8.

Page 5/22

Installation of WinCan8

6.2.3 WinCan8 language installation Double click on the LanguageSetup for your country. This will install all the specific items for pipe inspections used in your country (language files, damage catalogues, export interfaces…).

for the United States of America

for Great Britain

for Australia

for Singapore RESTART your PC; the installation of WinCan8 is finished now. If WinCan8 has NOT been installed as system administrator Windows 7/VISTA will block lots of different functions in the application itself as well as in the software communicating with it (e.g. device drivers). Proceed as follows to repair this:

 Activate the system administrator (p. 22-23).  Browse to the folder C:\Users\[Current User]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore.  Delete any WinCan8 related entry in the subfolder \VirtualStore OR rename it (e.g. WinCan v8_OLD). Finally restart your PC.

 Log in as system administrator and install WinCan8 again. Device drivers must first be completely uninstalled and then reinstalled as system administrator too.

6.2.4 Administrator rights for the installation folder Always verify if the user has got administrator rights on ALL the subfolders and files of the installation folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8 before launching the application. Right click on that folder, select the menu command Properties and check the settings as shown in the dialogue box below:

The current user must have Full Control over the WinCan v8 installation folder!

Page 6/22

Installation of WinCan8

6.2.5 Installation of additional modules All additional modules can be installed later at any time when they are needed. These modules are listed below:

 WinCan Converter (converts WinCan V7 projects into the V8 format).  WinCan MAP 2008 (imports SHAPE files containing geografical data. Engineer offices or town administrations will have to provide these files)

 WinCan CONDOR (allows mobile inspections of manholes with a tablet PCs)  WinCan METADB (displays an interface to search in more than 1 database) After finishing the installation you will find all program files needed to run WinCan8 properly in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8

Page 7/22

Reading the license of WinCan8

7 Reading the license of WinCan8 The license activates all the modules you have purchased. The basical informations therefore needed are stored in a small file (VTC file) that must fit to your dongle (hardlock). The operating system automatically tells you to browse for this VTC file as soon as WinCan8 is launched for the first time:

Confirm this message and another one is popping up telling you to check the system date:

Friday 27th august 2010

If the system date displayed when hovering over the area with the system time (right end of the taskbar) is the same as indicated in this message box you may confirm it. Finally the text entry box below is popping up.

Browse for the VTC file that fits to your dongle number and click on the green button

7.1 Updating the license If the licence is expired/upgraded, a new VTC file must be read by the system (the expiration date will be announced by the message VTC file upgrade is required everytime before WinCan8 is launched). To update/upgrade your license open an existing WinCan8 project and select the menu command Tools, License upgrade. The messages described above will pop up again in the corresponding order. IMPORTANT: Never change the system date if the dongle/hardlock is plugged in! Otherwise it will be locked automatically and the message VTC file upgrade is required will pop up after every launch of WinCan8. As there is NO possibility to unblock such a dongle you must return it to CDLab and pay for a new one. The RED control lamp has to glow constantly. If it's blinking the dongle is out of order and you will have to return it too. If this happens within a period of one year and if the dongle hasn't got any other damage it will be replaced for free.

Page 8/22

Update of an existing WinCan8 installation

8 Update of an existing WinCan8 installation CDLab provides new setup packages within a period of approximately 6 months. Each WinCan setup file contains a new version number. Just download the latest versions of the file WinCan8Setup as well as the corresponding LanguageSetup file directly from our website www.wincan.com (Link Support, Updates). The new setup version is always installed OVER an existing WinCan8 version and is always updating the version number of WinCan8 that will be higher than the one used before. Projects created with older WinCan8 versions can be read by the new version without any problems.

= old Setup file (check the date: Year_Month_Day)

= new Setup file (check the date: Year_Month_Day) The installation of a new WinCan8 version always starts with a BACKUP of the previous version (chapter 11.1): After the BACKUP procedure the Setup-/Update dialogue will pop up automatically:

The new program version is displayed in comparison with the old version. Click on the button Next to launch the update procedure.

After the installation of an updated WinCan8Setup file the new version number will be displayed as usual on the left part of the title bar of the WinCan8 main window:

Page 9/22

Update of an existing WinCan8 installation Repair mode: If ever some important program parts/files are deleted mistakenly or changed/corrupted by system crashes you may recover the original status of the software by double clicking on the file WinCan8Setup AND selecting the option Repair:

Modify: This mode adds or deletes already available parts of the WinCan application.

Remove: This mode uninstalls the present setup file. Already existing section and inspection data will not be deleted.

Remark: The repair mode does NOT supply any guarantee that already existing data will not be deleted or overwritten. Therefore it is strongly recommanded that you regularly create BACKUPS of all productive data and all customized settings (chapter 10.2).

Page 10/22

User levels in WinCan8

9 User levels in WinCan8 WinCan supports three user levels. A user level is determined after entering the corresponding user name and password during the WinCan start-up process. Administrator level Users with this level have unrestricted rights and are also able to set up new user accounts. In addition, the administrator can use authorisations to normal users.

to assign different reading and writing

Supervisor level Users with his level have the same rights as an administrator but without the permission to set up new user accounts. User level This user level is normally assigned to operators. The rights of these users are restricted but can be modified by the administrator. Creating or editing user accounts These operations can only be performed by the administrator. Choose in the menu to edit or add user accounts as required. Level 3 means administrators, level 2 supervisors and level 1 users. The field Remark is only displayed in this window.

The button

can be used to set the rights for the user level individually.

Page 11/22

BACKUP of WinCan8

 Add new items allows the user to add new data.  Delete items allows the user to delete sections, inspections and observations  Edit template settings allows the user to change the layout (input mask and header layouts of the reports).

 Using mass update allows you to search and replace records by setting a criterion in a field.

 Deleting projects allows the user to delete the whole project from the list in the project manager.

IMPORTANT: WinCan8 does NOT delete any projects: The project folder automatically gets the extension "_deleted" after you have clicked on the button in the project manager. The user therefore always must delete the project folder manually in the Windows-Explorer!

 Merge projects allows the user to gather single projects in ONE new empy project.

10 BACKUP of WinCan8 10.1 Backup of the installation folder A copy of the whole installation folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan is put in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\Backup during a version upgrade (p.8). So you will be able to make a recovery of the previous version from this folder. Proceed as follows to do this:

 Highlight and copy all the subfolders and files in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan

v8\Backup that has got the name of the previous version number. Paste the content into the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan. Confirm the message asking you to overwrite already existing data with the button "YES to ALL".

OR

 Highlight the file wincan8.exe in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\Backup\WinCan\[Version] …

 … and copy this one into the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan Regularly delete the BACKUP folders that are no longer used to have enough disk space available.

Page 12/22

BACKUP of WinCan8

10.2 Individual Backup of WinCan8 parameters Create a new folder on a separate partition on your hard drive (e.g. D:\) with the name BackupPersonalSettings_WinCan8 and copy the files listed below into this folder. In case of a reinstallation of the whole WinCan8 application the most important personal settings can hereby be retrieved from these files: from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\[Language Folder] …contains all the template files (layout settings for input masks and TV-reports) used in your country. from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\user …contains all the address data of the clients, the sites/managers and the contractor(s).

from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\Logo …contain the logo(s) of the company; the filename can be changed if necessary.

from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\Ini …contains the positions of the text displayed on the monitor as well as changes in the configuration of the OSD panel. from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\[Language Folder]\ …contains the list of selectable damage catalogues available for your country.

from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\[Language Folder] …contains all the symbols created in WinCanDraw. from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\Ini …contains all the general settings for the current WinCan8 version. from C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan …contains the settings for the correct display of special characters (e.g. ae, ä, ö, ü, ç, etc.) according to the OSD device actually used.

Troubleshooting

11 Troubleshooting 11.1 General launching problems WinCan8 is starting up after a double click. However the launching process suddenly stops after the program logo has popped up for a short time:

 Cause: Wrong DPI values

Solution: Set the DPI value of the screen text to normal size (96 dpi). Right click on the desktop and select the menu command Properties.

1

3

2

 Cause: Registration of the COM-Server has failed

Solution: Double click on the file WinCanCOMM_V3_0.exe in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan to register it again and restart your PC.

 Cause: Corruption of the WinCanCORE installation

Solution: Reinstall the WinCanCORESetup and select the REPAIR mode.

 Cause: Installation procedure blocked by antivirus software

Solution: Temporarily deactivate the antivirus software and completely reinstall WinCan8 in the REPAIR mode. Before launching WinCan set the following three installation files as trustworthy for the antivirus software: C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\wincan_8.exe C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\wincan_8.alf C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\WinCanCOMM_V3_0.exe

Page 14/22

Troubleshooting

11.2 Dongle related launching problems Despite of successful installation and licensing WinCan8 can NOT be launched or the message below appears immediately after launching the application:

Proceed as follows to resolve the problem:

 Unplug the Dongle from your PC.  Install the hardlock driver HASPUserSetup.exe located in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\Utils\Drivers\Hardlock.

 Plug the dongle into another USB-Port AND wait for the hardware assistant that will recognize the dongle automatically as usual.

 Open the power options dialogue in Windows and deactivate all the STANDBY entries as the hardlock driver might sometimes be deactivated by the STANDBY mode.

 Restart your PC and launch WinCan8 If WinCan8 STILL doesn't start up …

 The VTC file (license file) may have been corrupted. Order a new VTC file per phone or per e-mail from CDLab, Switzerland ([email protected]) and indicate the corresponding dongle number.

 Delete the file wincan_8.alf in the folder C:\Programme\WinCan v8\WinCan\  Launch WinCan8 and browse for the new VTC file. If WinCan8 STILL doesn't start up …

 Launch the utility WinCan Setup via the menu START, All Programs, WinCan v8, Utils. If there appears an error message immediately after the launch of this program the file C:\Windows\system32\hlvdd.dll may be missing or be corrupted.

 Copy the file hlvdd.dll from another PC with an error free WinCan8 installation into the same folder C:\Windows\system32\ on the current PC und launch WinCan8. If WinCan8 STILL doesn't start up (very rare case) …

 Unplug the dongle from the PC and uninstall ALL the separate WinCan8 remnants due

to the installation of versions lower than 8.20.0.XXXX (Scanexplorer_Setup, WinCanDraw_Setup, Replicator_Setup, Viewer_Setup, WinCan8_Setup, WinCan8Core_Setup).

 Reinstall the latest version of WinCan8 and browse for the VTC file.

Page 15/22

Troubleshooting

11.3 Dongle related functionality errors  WinCan8 doesn't start up AND the red control lamp on the dongle is blinking: this is warning you that the dongle is definitely broken and must be returned to the local reseller. It ONLY will be replaced for free if such an event happens within the 1 st year from the date of sale!

 WinCan8 doesn't start up OR may be crashing suddenly during the recording of video clips. The red control lamp on the dongle is glowing normally but the dongle itself has got a significantly higher temperature when you are touching it: to prevent overheating of your dongle plug it on a USB extension cord.

11.4 Conflicts with other applications If another dongle protected software has been installed and uninstalled previously on the target PC some environment variables set by the dongle manufacturer and named as hl_ will probably still remain in the system and thus disable the operation of WinCan8.

 Solution: Right click on the icon My Computer, select the command Properties and activate the page Advanced:

1

Delete all the variables in this list named as "hl_" and restart your PC.

2

IMPORTANT: If WinCan8 has already been installed it's generally NOT recommended to install a second dongle protected application on the same PC!

Page 16/22

Appendix

12 Appendix 12.1 Database structure The development of WinCan8 implied a new database structure that must enable an operator to assign MORE than one survey with its specific damages to the SAME section! This was NOT possible in WinCan7. The graphic below shows a simplified structure of a project database applied in WinCan8. It only contains the most important tables:

Project folder DB folder with the project database

The project database created by WinCan8 (ACCESS2000 format) is built-up hierarchically:

 The same section (S_T) can be be surveyed (SI_T) several times and several observations (SO_T) can be recorded per section survey.

 The same manhole (N_T) can be surveyed (NI_T) several times and several observations (SO_T) can be recorded per manhole survey.

 The same manhole (N_T) can be linked to several inlets/oulets (NE_T) which again are separately recorded.

 Each observation will automatically be assigned to its corresponding survey and each survey will automatically be assigned to its corresponding section/manhole!

Page 17/22

Appendix Besides the WinCan8 project database you will find the database address.mdb in the installation folder C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\User containing the following tables: Client:

table with all the clients recorded that can be assigned to a specific WinCan project.

Manager:

tabel with alle the managers/sites recorded that can be assigned to a specific WinCan project.

Contractor: table (C_T) with alle the contracters recorded that can be assigned to a specific WinCan project.

12.3 Activating the System Administrator During the first installation of Windows 7/VISTA you will have to assign yourself an administrator account to finish the installation procedure properly. However this administrator is NOT the system administrator. Only the latter one has got all the rights to access certain system components used during software installation. Proceed as follows to activate this system administrator:

 Right click on the desktop icon Computer and select the menu command Manage:

 Open the subfolder USERS in the category Local Users and Groups. Right click on the

User named as Administrator (system administrator) and select the command Properties:

DEACTIVATE the option Account is disabled in this panel (so the account will be enabled!)

Page 21/22

Appendix

 Set a password for further LOGIN as system administrator and confirm this one.  Close all the dialogue boxes and restart your PC.  It is possible from now to log in as system administrator.

You must log in as system administrator to install WinCan8 as well as all additional software modules or device drivers!

After the activation of the system administrator on a CLIENT-PC you must remove this computer temporarily from the domain before installing WinCan8. Otherwise the system administrator might in some cases be affected by restrictions defined by the domain controller and WinCan8 will NOT be installed properly!
