St. Mary’s CYO Basketball Awards Night 2010/2011

From the President’s Corner by Mike Doersam As usual another successful season for the 5th and 6th grade intramural's despite some scheduling problems, Girls Senior intramural's and our Boys travel teams. This year we had 4 Boys travel teams make the playoffs and one CYO champ.. Congrats to them, and they all had fun. Our intramural program is going as smooth as ever, thanks to Bob Sirois. I still enjoy seeing a 3rd or 4th grader with their parents in the supermarket and get the question "hey Mom or Dad is that the REF?", followed by “my child loves the program”, that makes the work all of us volunteers put forth, worth it. We certainly have a lot to be proud of here at St. Mary's CYO. We continue to provide a place where boys and girls learn, enjoy and sometimes excel in the sport of basketball; this is because of our "have fun" attitude and our great volunteer coaches. We continue to grow and have become one of the largest CYO programs on the Long Island. Even with the limited GYM space A special thanks to all my board members; Bob Sirois, Jim Cullen, Greg Palma. Also thanks to Bob and Linda Patch (Judy D, helping with the uniforms) Tom Cilmi and Tim Lye for all you do with registration and the web site . You continue to provide your time so unselfishly in order to make this program move along so smoothly. To all the coaches and parents I speak for myself and all the board members in wishing you a heartfelt thank you, because again without you guys there is no St Mary’s CYO. Remember players: WINNING IS FUN, BUT MORE IMPORTANT, HAVING FUN IS WINNING!!!!

We are every proud of our Intramural program. This year we had almost 600 kids playing on 50 teams. Bob Sirois is involved in all aspects of running this league. He makes great efforts to accommodate special requests, create balanced teams and be there for the coaches and parents. And he does all this without a child in the program. We’re proud to have him.

PARENTS Coaches always appreciate it when you volunteer to keep the clock or scorebook during games. Let your coach know if you would be interested.

From the Intramural Coordinator’s Corner by Bob Sirois I'd like to extend a very warm welcome on another Awards Night for St. Mary's CYO Basketball, one of the best and largest basketball programs on Long Island. I'm completing my 10th year as the Intramural Coordinator and the successes of this program make this ministry more rewarding every year. The Board would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all our coaches. Without their time and sacrifice, we would not have a program. As great a job as our coaches do, they need help. In future seasons, commit yourselves to talk to your child's coach and ask how you can help. Even better, become a volunteer coach - if you have experience coaching other sports, you can coach basketball. Finally, we have a fantastic website that we use to disseminate information about AWARDS NIGHT and other functions but if parents aren't going into the site, the information is not getting out. Our website is about ten years old and we are approaching 36,000 hits - but we should have a lot more hits!!! You are doing yourself and your child an injustice if, during your season, you are not going into the website two or three times a week. As the intramural coordinator, I field hundreds of questions a year from parents and coaches, most of which can be answered if people used the website more. There are buttons down the left-hand side of the front page - you will see TRAVEL or INTRAMURALS - hit your appropriate button and you'll probably find the answer you're looking for. I'd like to send a sincere thank you to all players and parents concerning all the schedule revisions that we had to endure this season. You rolled with the punches and hung in there with us and we are truly grateful. Thank you

Outstanding Community Leadership Mike Doersam, president of St. Mary’s CYO basketball, was recently honored at the 2nd Annual Community Leaders Reception at the Marconi Manor in Islip for his outstanding contributions to the community. Mike was presented a plaque from Tom Cilmi, Suffolk County legislator, 10th district.

KEEP ISLIP CLEAN One of our players, Robert Sarno, put up a sneaker recycle box at the 401 Main Street gym to collect old sneakers in order to recycle them into track and basketball surfaces. The KIC team was very happy to receive a large donation of sneakers from Robert. Great job Robert, and to those who contributed.

We Always Need Coaching Volunteers

Spotlight on Coach

Have you noticed our Intramural teams have up to 14 kids per team? We would prefer to have 10 kids per team so that each one can play at least half a game, but we need more coaches. Please consider volunteering. Between practice and games it is only a 2 hour commitment per week. Most coaches consider it to be a fun and rewarding experience.

Mark Goldsmith Mark is a longtime CYO travel and Intramural coach. He has coached four children; Jake, Jason, Jeremy and Cody over the past nine years. He has been an excellent coach and very good guy; known for helping out CYO whenever we needed him. His youngest is in 3rd grade so we hope we have him for a longtime. Thanks for everything, Mark!
