Spring Harbor Middle School Volume 17 Issue 8 From the Principal...

April 2013

I would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to the cast and crew of The Music Man, recently performed at the Memorial High School auditorium. Many students, along with their fearless directors, Mr. Ropa and Ms. Lazorik, worked incredibly hard to create such a wonderful production. Additionally, countless other staff members and volunteers also dedicated time ensuring a fabulous performance. The musical was such an unbelievable undertaking with such wonderful results! Kudos to these truly dedicated professionals and all of our student thespians.

During the months of March and April, through our Positive Behavioral Supports program, we continue to talk about what it looks like to “Respect Everyone, Respect Education and Respect the Environment” in the classroom. We acknowledge the respectful behaviors with “gotchas”. The “gotchas” can be submitted for monthly pizza drawings or can be used to “buy” things in the Gotcha Shop. Additionally, we are excited to celebrate our final “Fun Day” on April 19. We love spending time celebrating with our students who consistently make good choices. Keep up the good work, Spring Harbor students! Third quarter report cards will be coming home shortly; if you do not receive a report card in the mail, please check Infinite Campus. We have seen many improvements, but continue to strive for success with the MMSD promotion policy, students in the eighth grade must maintain a 1.67 grade point average in all four core content areas (social studies, math, language arts, science) or score a well on the WKCE standardized test in the respective core content where they are deficient. Parents will receive a letter indicating that these criteria were not met, those students should plan to attend summer school. There are a few important dates to put on your calendar in the upcoming weeks. On May 29 at 6:00 p.m., we welcome incoming sixth grade students and their parents for orientation. The annual Environmental Conference will be held on May 2 (with environmental field trips all day on May 3) and the first Springathon turn in day is May 3. On May 10, we will take our all school picture. Please consult the weekly Ship’s Log for additional dates in April and May, it’s a very busy time at Spring Harbor!

7 On June 11, we will hold our eighth grade completion ceremony at the Marriot Hotel, followed by a student luncheon and dance. June 12 marks our field trip day, with eighth graders traveling to Mt. Olympus and sixth and seventh graders going to Noah’s Ark. Permission slips will be coming home in May. As always, we value your comments, support and help. Sincerely,

Leia Esser, Ed.D Principal

Music News The Music Room at Spring Harbor has been very busy over the last month or so with various events such as Solo and Ensemble Festival, Strings Festival, and preparation for spring concerts. District Solo/Ensemble Festival was held at Memorial High School on March 9th. Students from all over the district from grades 6-12 involved in music are eligible to participate. This year’s Spring Harbor representatives were: Ryan Treves, Naomi Wong, Maddy Peppard, Veronica Prestine, Heidi James, Megan Gale, Timothy Zhang and Aris Awes. Ryan Treves will be going on to the State Solo and Ensemble Festival on April 27th in Platteville. Congratulations to all students on a job well done! Saturday, March 16th was Madison's 47th annual Strings Festival. All Spring Harbor orchestra students have spent the past few months preparing for the performance - i.e. learning the songs in the packet, memorizing the songs, and finally "passing off" all learned songs. The event was hosted by Memorial High School, and was a great success! It was wonderful to see the orchestra students play for such a large audience. We will now start preparing for our upcoming May concert.

SHMS PTSO 8th Annual Springathon 5K run/walk WHAT is the ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? • • •

A PTSO sponsored annual event and fundraiser for SHMS that replaces the token “magazine sale”. This event runs for three weeks in May during which time the students collect monetary donations from friends, family, neighbors, and local businesses. Fundraising for the Springathon is structured similar to a catalog sale without having to sell anything: o o o o o o

Turn in a $15 donation on WEEK ONE: get a Springathon t-shirt, ring pop and free hot dog at the event. Turn in a cumulative $60 donation on WEEK TWO: get a giant candy bar. Turn in a cumulative $120 donation on WEEK THREE: get a chance at the teacher pie toss and a choice of SHMS spirit item (to be determined). Turn in a cumulative $175 donation: get a limo ride for pizza during the school day. Turn in a cumulative $250 donation: get a trip to the Kalahari Water Park in WI Dells, bused from school with other classmates. The last “Turn-in Day’ is also the day of the Springathon event. The event includes a 5K walk/run around the Spring Harbor neighborhood (optional), food, fun and talent show by the students after school.

WHEN is the 2013 ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? • • • • •

The eight annual Springathon kick-off assembly will be Friday, April 26th, 2013. WEEK ONE turn-in day is Friday May 3th, 2013. WEEK TWO turn-in day is Friday May 10th, 2013. WEEK THREE turn-in day is Friday May17th 2013 and this will be the final day of the fundraiser. The Springathon walk/run and talent show will be Friday May 17th from 3:00 – 5:00 after school.

WHY do we need an ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? •

Budget Cuts….need I say more! The donations collected are used for the much needed resources and programs for the students and staff.

HOW to join in on the fun and help with the success of the ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? •

• •

Donate a really cool prize(s) that your child would be motivated to win that can be offered at one of the prize levels . i.e. gift cards, IPOD Touch, digital camera, something unique. Or make a cash donation that we can apply towards one of the “Big ticket items”. Thank you to the Halverson family for the donation of an Xbox 360 Kinect for our grand prize. Looking to have all donations by April 24th. Volunteer the morning of the turn-in days, especially of the last day or at the event. The listserv will be used to request volunteers for specific days and times. Let us know how you can help….Please contact Springathon co-chairs John Olson at JohnOlson@wisc.edu or Betsy Niesen at betsyniesen@charter.net

Physical Education and Athletics There are some opportunities for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls this spring. Starting in April, soccer and softball will be offered as after school interscholastic teams. There will be travel to other middle schools. Soccer will be played on Wednesdays and Softball will be played on Thursdays. Possible Spring Harbor teams depend on how many students sign up for each sport. The sign up sheets for both sports are on Mr. Friedl’s office door. Please check your schedules as students tend to sign up and forget they have other activities they are committed to. Another great opportunity coming for 8th graders is the Westside Middle School Track Meet held during the school day on Wednesday, May 22. It will be followed by the All-City meet on Wednesday, May 29. This is a very fun and exciting event with 8th graders getting a glimpse of a real high school track meet experience in which they compete against other middle schools in the city. We will discuss, practice and learn about the different events in physical education class. Then the students can decide if they are interested and sign up for the meet in May. Also, the athletic director from Memorial High School will come to Spring Harbor in May for a meeting with 8th grade students interested in participating in athletics next year in 9th grade. The meeting is immediately after school in the gym. This informative meeting covers expectations for student athletes, physical and insurance requirements, seasons for the different sports and answers to student questions about the Memorial sports programs. We will be finished at 3:30. If you have any questions about these activities, please contact me by phone or email: Phil Friedl pfriedl@madison.k12.wi.us 204-1116

Phil Friedl pfriedl@madison.k12.wi.us 204-1116
