Giving shelter animals a voice
Director’s Welcome All Aboard! The Role of Transport in Animal Welfare There is a shift happening nationally in the animal welfare and sheltering world. With the growth of effective spay and neuter programs and the introduction of rescue groups, the live release rate of homeless animals is increasing. Euthanasia continues to steadily decline across the United States. Overall, the bigger picture looks great. However, what happens in the areas that don’t have these programs in place? Essentially, what we have is a distribution problem. For example, areas on the West Coast have an influx of Chihuahuas needing homes while areas in the South have an influx of Black Labs. Both of those breeds are highly sought after here in the Midwest. Right now, there are areas on the East Coast that do not have enough adoptable dogs. There are nearly no puppies available at those sites either. This may be unimaginable to us right now but is proof that successful programs can work. HSCA is proud to partner with organizations like Animal Rescue Corps, CanINE Express, and Alsip Home & Nursery to be able to transport adoptable animals from our organization to reputable shelters in Indiana, on the East Coast and beyond. Last week, some of our dogs went on an adventure to Nova Scotia! We will continue to grow our transport program to maintain our live release rate of 97%. Another common theme across the nation is that shelters are seeing an increase in older dogs or special needs animals and a decrease in puppies. (No worries – we have plenty of puppies here!) This is creating a challenge for adoption. HSCA is very fortunate to be able to treat diseases that other facilities can’t - including heartworm and parvovirus. Heartworm has become an epidemic in our area. Currently, we are treated over twenty dogs that have tested positive. If you have ever considered fostering an animal, please consider a heartworm positive dog. The shelter is a stressful place for them to recover. With the warmer weather upon us, it’s so important to protect your animals from this deadly disease. Major spent 328 days at HSCA, a good majority of those days in the behavior program for dogs with special training needs. He became the shelter’s behavior specialist’s office dog when his condition began to deteriorate rapidly in the kennel. On Major’s 329th day at the shelter, he went home with his new owner. Behavior Specialist Kristina Montgomery put it best when she said, “I handed his leash over to his new owner, along with his favorite toy, and Major happily followed him to his car, without so much as a second glance back at the shelter. Every long day, every disappointment, every bit of blood, sweat, and tears - it is worth it for moments like this.”

Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehab Center 570 North 450 East Valparaiso, IN 46383 (219) 299-8027 www.mrwildliferehab.org Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was founded in 2002 to provide educational programs aimed at teaching people who to live harmoniously with wildlife and to rehabilitate and release sick or injured wildlife. Education services are available to the public about how to live in harmony with native wildlife, and to school children about leaving wild animals in the wild whenever possible. Soon they will welcome their first animals to the center for rehabilitation. HSCA will provide support and staff expertise to help MRWRC extend its reach. Executive Director Ange Grady and Licensed Rehabilitator Stephanie Kadletz are poised to be a positive force for wildlife in Porter county and beyond.

Ways to Help Planned Giving Consider naming Humane Society Calumet Area as a beneficiary of your pension plan, IRA, or retirement plan. Paper Recycling Program You can help the homeless animals of the HSCA and the environment by simply bringing your newspapers, magazines, mail, school & office papers, notebooks, folders, and catalogs to our green and yellow recycle bins. We have consistently received around $200 per month thanks to your donations! Please do not put cardboard in the bins! Did you know? Birthday Parties at the Shelter Shelter birthday parties are a great option for children who love animals. Imagine having a party for your child and not cooking or cleaning! HSCA’s Annual Gala Featured National TV Celebrity ~ Rico Ramos Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) held its annual gala on February 8 featuring a style show hosted by renowned local stylist and finalist on BRAVO’s Shear Genius Ben Mollin, new HSCA initiatives, fundraising opportunities and awards at the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville. Guests of HSCA’s gala had the opportunity to see Mollin host a show featuring 50 unique, student-created hairstyles. Students from five local Mario Tricoci hair schools displayed their creations in five themes: farm animals, safari, jungle, aquatic and exotic birds. Prior to the hair show, HSCA Executive Director Rachel Delaney announced three new HSCA initiatives. First, the animal shelter began accepting dogs in late 2013 from the city of Gary, pushing the shelter to its maximum capacity. Second, HSCA has partnered with Alsip Nursery of Frankfort, Ill. and St. John, Ind. in a new rescue center initiative. Third, the Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (MRWRC) became the newest addition to HSCA’s family of subsidiaries. Delaney presented Ben Mollin with the “Humane Leader of the Year Award” for his work in supporting HSCA and help hosting the event. Early Bird Food Truck received the “Humane Business of the Year Award” for its effort in promoting humane food options in various locations throughout Northwest Indiana. Owners Alison Eichhorn and Aaron Gutierrez donated all of last summer’s tips to HSCA. Throughout the evening, guests were offered three ways to bid on silent auction items: in person, via smart phone or with the assistance of a volunteer. Auction items included gift cards, paintings and an iPad Air. Funds raised from the auction and raffles benefit the animal shelter’s basic animal care needs, such as food, medicine and cleaning supplies.

Adoption Center Animals Waiting for a Second Chance...
Mystery 1 year old Male We’re all stumped at HSCA as to how a great cat like Mystery ended up as a stray! He can be a little mischievous, and he loves to explore and play. He was initially shy but loves to be in our cat colony and follow you around looking for pets. He also enjoys cuddling with his cat friend Kitter.
Dundee 5 years old Male Australian Cattle Dog / mix Dundee is smart dog who would thrive with a job to do and is very food motivated. He is quick to pick out “his” person and would like to be the only dog in the house. Dundee is the perfect size for any home, even an apartment.
Nikita 3 years old Female Pit Bull Mix Poor Nikita has been at the shelter since January and is getting depressed. This girl is housetrained, mild mannered, and very food motivated so it would be easy to finish her obedience training. She would prefer to be the only dog in the house.
Sophie 1 year old Female Dilute Tortie Sophie was surrendered by an animal hoarder and had not been socialized before coming to HSCA. She can still be shy but loves to come up and rub against your legs to be petted! She has a cute little meow and likes to play with toys.

Heartworm FAQs
Pet Care: HSCA has seen a higher-than-average number of cases this year. Heartworm is 100% preventable and the following will provide all of the information you need to keep your pet safe. What is Heartworm? Heartworm is a potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms that travel through the bloodstream (harming arteries and vital organs along the way) ending up in the vessels of the lung and heart chamber of dogs, cats, and other types of mammals. Dogs are most suseptible to infection, but other pets that go outdoors are also at risk. What Causes Heartworm? Heartworm larvae are transmitted by mosquitoes that have bitten an infected animal. The mosquito ingests Heartworm larvae in the infected blood and passes the larvae to the next animals it bites. Larvae mature into adult worms in a little over six months. Heartworm can not be transmitted through saliva and other bodily fluids. Larvae are invisible to the eye as they move through the body, but can reach langths of more than twelve inches at maturity. What are the Symptoms of Heartworm? Signs of heartworm in dogs include a mild, persistent cough, reluctance to move or exercise, fatigue after little activity, lack of appetite and weight loss. Signs of heartworm in cats are not as specific and can easily be misdiagnosed as feline asthma or other lung problems. Infected cats may experience vomiting, gagging, difficult or rapid breathing, lethargy, and weight loss. How can Heartworm Be Prevented? The American Heartworm Society recommends giving a heartworm preventative pill year round, whether you see mosquitos or not (Heartworm is present in all 50 states). Preventative medication can only be dispensed by a licensed veterinarian. How is Heartworm Diagnosed? A simple blood test can determine if your dog is infected. These tests are not effective for dogs under 6-months-old, but young dogs can still benefit from preventative pills. Have your dog tested annually, because it can take up to six months for a test to come back positive after infection. How is it treated? There is currently no product available to cure heartworm in cats. While heartworm is treatable in dogs, it is expensive, potentially fatal, and unpleasant for your dog. Treatment for dogs includes the injection of drugs called adulticides into the muscle. Treatment has a high success rate, but it is risky and requires weeks of restricted exercise. Prevention is the best method of attack for Heartworm. You will save money on costly treatment and prevent needless pain and suffering for your pet. Pet Tips Dog Behavior FAQs
with Kristina Montgomery, CPDT-KA Q: My dog is being destructive (chewing up shoes, getting into the trash, etc.) when I’m gone from the house, and I think it is because he is jealous. What can I do to correct him? A: It sounds like your dog is getting into some trouble when he is left unsupervised! Dogs do not act out due to jealousy – however, they do act out due to stress or boredom. The first step to fixing this problem is to give your dog a “dog-proof” area in the house where he can stay safely while you are away. This can be a crate or a small area in the house (bathroom or kitchen); even putting up baby gates in a hallway can be sufficient for some dogs. Make sure that you exercise your dog vigorously for 10-15 minutes before leaving the house to tire him out. Provide your dog with plenty of toys – stuffing a KONG toy with peanut butter and freezing it works as a great boredom buster! As your dog learns how to control himself in a small area, you can begin to gradually give him more space. If he begins to act destructive again, he isn’t ready to have freedom in the house yet; simply continue to contain him in a smaller area until he learns how to better control himself. Q: How can my dog(s) interact with children safely? A: You always want to make sure that your dog has a positive experience with children. Here are some tips on how your dog can learn to live happily with kids: 1) Never force your dog to interact with a child if he is uncomfortable and monitor him for signs of stress, such as excessive panting, refusal to eat treats, or a furrowed brow. 2) Never allow a child, no matter how small, to climb on, ride, or hug your dog. Most dogs do not find hugging to be pleasant and may react aggressively if grabbed roughly by a child. Also, never allow a child to put their face in the dog’s face. 3) Do give your dog treats and attention when the child is present, and if old enough, allow the child to either hand the dog treats or throw treats on the ground for the dog to eat. 4) If the child is old enough, teach them how to appropriately interact with the dog by playing fetch, teaching the dog to sit, or going on a walk. 5) Make sure to supervise the child when they interact with your dog. If your dog lives with a child, make sure that the dog has a “child-free” zone that he can escape to if he needs some space – this place can be a crate or an extra bedroom with a baby gate in the door way.
Dog Bite Prevention for Kids Kids can be empowered to prevent dog bites by learning how to act safely around dogs. The ASPCA reports that 50 percent of all children will be bitten by a dog before their 12th birthday. Even the friendliest, sweetest dog may bite if it feels threatened, scared, or too excited. Most dog bites are from a pet, a neighbor’s dog, or a friend’s dog. Talking about the Dos and Don’ts below with your child, can help them know what to do if they encounter a strange dog, are frightened by a dog, and what behavior is safe around dogs. This list was developed by West Virginia Extension Service Families & Health & 4-H Youth Development Programs, and American Humane. DOGGIE DOs: • Ask the dog’s owner if it is OK to pet the dog. • Let the dog smell the back of your closed hand. • Pet the dog gently under the chin (not on the head). • If you see a loose dog, tell an adult right away. • Be Calm: take in a quiet voice or whisper (no shouting) and take a “time out” if you feel angry or frustrated. • Be Slow: use slow movements, set things down carefully, and don’t run when you’re around dogs because this makes them excited and they may accidently hurt you. • Be a tree if a strange dog comes up to you. Stand straight with your feet together. Keep your hands glued to your sides like a tree trunk. Watch your roots grow by staring at the ground. Do not make eye contact with the dog. • Be a log if you are knocked down by a strange dog. On the ground, curl into a ball with your legs together. Keep your face down. Cover the back of the neck with your fists. Put your arms over your ears. Stay quiet and still until the dog goes away. DOGGIE DON’Ts: • Don’t tease dogs: never hit, kick, or bite a dog or pull on its ears, tail, or paws. • Don’t stare into a dog’s eyes. • Don’t go near dogs chained up in yards. • Don’t run or scream if a loose dog comes near you. • Don’t touch a dog when it is sleeping, eating, or playing with a toy. • Don’t hug a dog. • Don’t bother service dogs alone while they are working.
