No seas un mediocre más

Una lección para dictadores

Por María Marín Hay un lugar muy conocido en los Alpes suizos donde muchas compañías envían a sus empleados para escalar las sendas que cruzan la sierra. El objetivo es que aprendan a trabajar mejor en equipo y a la vez se sientan satisfechos de cumplir un gran logro. Subir hasta la cima toma unas ocho horas y, aunque no es fácil, cualquiera que esté saludable lo puede hacer. Cada mañana, como preparación para la expedición, los alpinistas se reúnen en la base de la montaña para escuchar una charla motivadora. Antes de empezar el recorrido, todos están ansiosos por llegar a la cima, tomarse una foto y celebrar su victoria. Una vez comienzan a escalar, los alpinistas suben por varias horas sin detenerse y cuando llegan a la mitad del camino toman un receso en una cafetería. Allí se quitan los abrigos, se sientan cerca de la chimenea y mientras

se comen un sabroso sándwich saborean una taza de chocolate bien calientita. Después de relajarse y estar a gusto por un buen rato, ¿adivina lo que sucede? Cerca de la mitad de los alpinistas deciden no continuar con su jornada y no es porque piensen que es imposible llegar a la cima, tampoco es que estén cansados, ni mucho menos que estén lesionados. La razón por la que deciden abandonar su meta es porque se sienten tan cómodos que les “pesa” retomar la subida. Así como esto alpinistas se conforman con llegar a la mitad del camino, hay muchos que en su recorrido por la vida comienzan un sueño con gran ánimo y determinación, pero cuando prueban un poco del éxito se conforman con lo que han logrado, aún sabiendo que esa no era la meta inicial. Quizás dices: “Pretendía bajar 20 libras, pero me conformo con haber bajado cinco”, “Quería dejar

de fumar, pero no estoy tan mal porque ahora fumo diez cigarros al día en vez de 20”, “Soñaba con un buen hombre, pero me quedé con un “bueno para nada” porque al menos no estoy solita”, “Siempre quise tener mi propio negocio pero no me quejo porque al menos no estoy en la fila de los desempleados”. Si tienes un propósito incompleto, ¡es hora de acabarlo! Desde hoy visualízate llegando a la cima de la montaña. Reconoce que viniste al mundo para continuamente alcanzar nuevas alturas. Tú no naciste para tener éxito a medias. Independientemente de dónde te encuentres, no te sientas satisfecho con lo que has logrado. ¡Alcanza tu potencial y no seas un mediocre más! Ask the Judge

Por Jorge Ramos Ávalos La revolución en Túnez, que este mes puso fin a los 23 años de gobierno de Zune El-Abidine Ben Ali, ha enviado un claro mensaje a otros líderes autoritarios del resto del mundo: un dictador ha caído; tarde o temprano otros caerán. Es comprensible que regímenes autoritarios desde Beijing hasta La Habana y Caracas estén experimentando cierta inquietud y ansiedad a raíz de la explosión de las protestas en Túnez. Los dictadores funcionan en un estado de paranoia, temerosos siempre de que ellos puedan ser los siguientes en ser derrocados. Ben Ali conquistó el poder en Túnez con un golpe incruento en 1987. La nación había soportado más de dos décadas bajo un régimen autocrático antes de que motines callejeros empezaran a finales de diciembre de 2010. El 14 de enero, después de que la violencia se extendió en la capital, también llamada Túnez, Ben Ali y su familia huyeron en avión a Arabia Saudita. Fue el primer líder árabe derrocado en tiempos modernos por revueltas populares, y el uso de Facebook y Twitter contribuyó significativamente a su caída. Esto no es una exageración. La mayoría de los medios de comunicación de Túnez, sometidos a una fuerte presión gubernamental, evitaron los reportajes relevantes acerca de las protestas contra la dictadura. Así que fueron las redes sociales de Internet -- con el mensaje “Ben Ali, Fuera” -- las que transmitían constantemente información y permitían la comunicación entre los ciudadanos, convocando a protestas masivas a lo largo de la principal arteria de la capital tunecina, el Boulevard Bourguiba. El resultado fue el fin de la dictadura. La pregunta ahora es: ¿afectará esta revuelta sólo a Túnez, o se extenderá más allá de sus fronteras? “Estoy seguro de que hay otros gobiernos árabes en el Medio Oriente árabe que están

observando muy nerviosamente lo que pasa en Túnez”, me dijo Michael Oren, embajador de Israel ante Estados Unidos, en una entrevista reciente.”En Israel creemos que es algo bueno ... Esperamos que la democracia emerja a lo largo de todo el Medio Oriente; Israel ha sido, desde hace tiempo, la única democracia funcional en la región”. ¿Es posible que protestas como las de Túnez puedan ocurrir en las calles de Beijing, Caracas o La Habana? De hecho, no sólo es posible, sino probable -- las luchas actuales por las libertades individuales y el derecho a la libre expresión no están limitadas sólo al norte de Africa. Después de todo, ningún hombre tiene el derecho de decidir el destino de millones, así se llame Hugo Chávez en Venezuela, Hu Jintao, en China, o Raúl Castro en Cuba. La victoria de Túnez contra la opresión ofrece evidencia de que esta idea se está extendiendo. Hugo Chávez cree que él es Venezuela. En un discurso ante la Asamblea Nacional el 15 de enero, Chávez usó 489 veces la palabra “yo”. Y en esa misma ocasión, Chávez se refirió 52 veces a “Chávez”, como si hablara de otra persona. Por supuesto, está equivocado. Chávez no es Venezuela y algún día el país seguirá adelante sin él. El lo sabe, y eso le provoca ansiedad. De hecho, Chávez, obsesionado con controlar todo, recientemente sacó del aire una telenovela colombiana que tenía como protagonista un perro llamado “Huguito”. Increíble, pero cierto. Quizá el escritor colombiano premiado con el Nobel, Gabriel García Márquez, estaba en lo cierto cuando dijo que en América Latina no es necesario inventar nada, porque tenemos más que suficiente con la realidad. Cuba tampoco es Fidel y Raúl Castro, aunque los hermanos piensen que sí lo es. Y a estos dictadores no les agradan las críticas -- por eso su régimen

sacó del aire a CNN en Español. Pero los cubanos, un pueblo maravillosamente creativo, se las ha ingeniado para mantenerse conectados: algunos incluso ocultan sus antenas de TV dentro de tinacos y en las azoteas. Y pese a los esfuerzos del régimen por aislarla, la increíblemente valerosa periodista Yoani Sánchez envía mensajes casi diarios al mundo exterior por su Twitter (yoanisanchez), para informarnos acerca de la situación que se vive en su isla y su régimen represivo mediante actualizaciones en su blog (desdecuba.com/generaciony). China es, sin duda, la nueva súper potencia económica. Y el régimen de Hu Jintao, años después de las protestas en la Plaza Tiananmen, no puede descartar la posibilidad de una nueva revuelta. El 19 de enero, mientras el dictador cenaba en la Casa Blanca, el nuevo ganador del Premio Nobel de la Paz, el chino Liu Xiaobo, languidecía en una prisión, cumpliendo una condena de 11 años por haber sugerido que los líderes de su país acogieran la reforma democrática. ¿Cuánto tiempo más podrá China soportar este tipo de tiranía? ¿Cuánto tiempo más puede impedirse a 1,300 millones de chinos que demanden las libertades a las que tienen derecho? Yo creo absolutamente que el deseo de los ciudadanos comunes de justicia, democracia y libertad es mucho más poderoso que un montón de dictadores con puño de hierro protegidos por ejércitos, Tarde o temprano, ellos también caerán. Con la ayuda del Internet, la revolución es posible y el cambio se puede lograr. El ejemplo de Túnez debería ser una lección y una advertencia para los dictadores en todo el mundo: nadie puede resistir la fuerza de una idea -- o una imagen -- que llega en el momento adecuado. ¿Tiene usted un comentario o pregunta para Jorge Ramos? Aunque lo más probable es que me pregunte: “¿Cuales son las experiencias del migrante mexicano en los Estados Unidos? Y siento el pánico escénico apoderarse de mí. Pienso en mi madre, que durante toda su vida fue devota radioescucha de Radio UNAM. ¿Estaría orgullosa de que la voz de su hija se escuchara a través de su estación favorita? O ¿sentiría el pesar de que se le entrevistara como a una extraña? Una ráfaga de terror me corre por la espalda. Qué puedo yo decir de las experiencias del migrante, si me he aferrado casi obstinadamente a continuar siendo ciudadana mexicana, aunque la realidad es que ya no reconozco ni la mitad de las calles de mi ciudad natal, y no duraría ni diez minutos manejando en su tráfico de las cinco de la tarde. Nuevamente me pregunto: ¿De cuál de todas las caras de la multifacética situación de los migrantes debería hablar? Tal vez del fenómeno de la nueva oleada de migrantes mexicanos, ola que parece casi un tsunami en ciertas ciudades del sur de los Estados Unidos, y que han dado lugar a la mal llamada ‘reconquista’ de lo que perdió Santa Ana. Aunque yo veo más bien una nueva perdida, esta vez, no medida en kilómetros de superficie de territorio nacional, pero en vidas, en talento y en recursos económicos y humanos. Éxodo en gran parte resultado de este nuevo jinete del Apocalipsis que ahora cabalga sobre México— la inseguridad. ¿O será que debo hablar del migrante en Arizona, que ahora se duele de haber

heredado a los suyos el color de su piel de canela y barro, y el color de una noche de desvelo en los ojos, y que ahora les pueden convertir en blanco de cuestionamientos? ¿O debería hablar de los muchos jóvenes con ilusiones rotas, cuando el más reciente intento de pasar el DREAM Act se perdió, perdiéndose al mismo tiempo tantas y tantas esperanzas? ¿O quizá deberé hablar de aquellos que caminan bajo el sol calcinante del desierto, viendo que tanto la ración de agua como la de esperanza se va agotando hora tras hora, y al encontrar bajo algún matorral un zapato perdido, se preguntarán ¿qué podría haber sucedido con el dueño de ese zapato? ¿Cómo pudo haber logrado llegar a…? O tal vez fue uno de esos hermanos latinoamericanos, compatriota, no necesariamente del mismo país, pero sí de una misma situación, de carencias y de esperanzas. De que finalmente un día de tantos, “pos a ver qué pasa”, se montó en un camión de segunda que tardó casi dos días para llegar a la frontera, o que previamente había pasado dos días viajando encima de los vagones de “La Bestia”, el ferrocarril que viaja desde el sur de México, y que le llevaría a algún punto donde podría abordar uno de esos camiones de segunda. O tal vez hablar de ese zapato abandonado debajo de un matorral en el camino del desierto, que no llegó del “otro lado’, y que le pertenecía a uno de esos tantos compatriotas, no necesariamente de un mismo país, pero sí de una misma ilusión y de una misma familia ahora inconclusa, y que descansa ahora en una tumba sin nombre, en el pequeño cementerio, también sin nombre, en el que paradójicamente, algunos finalmente así lograron el sueño de tener la posesión de un pedazo de tierra americana.

De acá de este lado… ¿Qué puedo yo decir?

Por M.Antonieta Gonzalez Por la ventana del taxi, veo pasar frente a mí, las calles de un México distinto al de mis recuerdos. Finalmente comienzo a caminar hacia el sitio de mi cita y veo el reloj con nerviosismo, como siempre luchando contra el monstruo omnipotente del tiempo. Trato de pensar en las preguntas que imagino que el anfitrión del programa de radio UNAM, me puede hacer. ¿Quién soy yo? Déjenme pensar... pues después de pasar unos días cerca de universitarios de la talla de la Dra. Arcelia Quintana, recientemente honrada con uno de los más altos reconocimientos al merito académico que otorga la Universidad, mi respuesta es: nadie. O tal vez prefiera presentarme como dijera Rosario Castellanos en su poema Cartilla de Identidad, “…puede usted anotar que soy mujer de buenas intenciones y que voy pavimentando un camino directo y fácil…”, pero no, tampoco puedo tratar de cobijarme en los versos de otra extraordinaria chiapaneca como la Dra. Quintana. Bien, supongo que podría contestar a la pregunta de ¿Quién soy?, diciendo que de médico, poeta y loco, pues yo también tengo un poco. SAWS and Schertz-Seguin finalize largest non-Edwards Regional Water Project Partnership with regional neighbors will bring more than five billion gallons of nonEdwards water to San Antonio. Special to La Prensa Culminating years of work, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) signed a groundbreaking regional water supply agreement with SchertzSeguin Local Government Corporation (SSLGC) and the cities of Schertz and Seguin to secure the largest nonEdwards supply in SAWS history. SAWS Board of Trustees approved a contract to partner on a project bringing water from the Carrizo Aquifer in Gonzales County to the cities of San Antonio, Schertz and Seguin. “By working with our neighbors, San Antonio ratepayers and the citizens of Schertz and Seguin will realize a cost savings,” said Robert R. Puente, SAWS President/CEO. “We believe this cooperative regional partnership will serve as a model for future water projects as we continue to make strides to prepare for the region’s future.” In July 2010, the Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District (GCUWCD) approved permits for SAWS to produce and transport up to 11,688 acre-feet per year of Carrizo Aquifer water from Gonzales County. With today’s contract, SAWS is partnering with the SSLGC to utilize the Corporation’s infrastructure to transport water from Gonzales County to San Antonio. Instead of building a new pipeline, SAWS will

“rent” available capacity in an existing pipeline owned and operated by SSLGC, saving SAWS ratepayers about $88 million. “We entered into SSLGC over ten years ago with dreams of having all the water we would need in the immediate future and lowering our water rates to our customers. With the signing of this contract, it looks like we will now be able to do that,” said Mayor Hal Baldwin, City of Schertz. The partnership has reduced the cost per acre-foot of this project by almost 30%, from about $1,500 to $1,100 per acre-foot. In addition to the water

Asimismo, el IRS busca este año devolver más de 150 millones de dólares en reembolsos que no pudieron ser entregados debido a errores con las direcciones de correo. Para poder recibir un reembolso, los contribuyentes deben actualizar su dirección postal para que el IRS pueda enviar el cheque que le corresponde. Los contribuyentes pueden actualizar su dirección en el sitio de Internet del IRS (IRS.gov), bajo la opción “¿Dónde está mi Reembolso?”, que permite a los contribuyentes comprobar el estatus de sus reembolsos.

Para hacer el cambio de dirección, se debe brindar información personal como el número de Seguro Social, estado civil y el monto del reembolso que aparece en la declaración del año 2009, de acuerdo con el IRS. Asimismo las autoridades tributarias recomiendan utilizar en un futuro el programa E-file para presentar la declaración de impuestos y utilizar el depósito directo para evitar este tipo de contratiempos. El programa E-file también ayuda a reducir los errores en declaraciones de impuestos y disminuye el tiempo de espera de los reembolsos. El 70 por ciento de los contribuyentes llevó a cabo sus declaraciones de impuestos electrónicamente en 2009, según datos de la agencia federal. El polígrafo tradicional se basa en la suposición de que mentir requiere de una sobrecarga mental lo cual, según ellos, genera una elevación de la presión arterial, de los ritmos cardiaco y respiratorio, sudoración y dilatación pupilar. Sin embargo, no todas las personas reaccionan de la misma manera. Por ejemplo, un individuo que padezca un trastorno

de personalidad antisocial, que es indiferente a los sentimientos de otras personas, es muy probable que no muestre ansiedad ni admita culpabilidad; mientras que una persona inocente, bajo la presión de ser interrogada, puede generar tal ansiedad, que dé lugar a un llamado falso positivo. Hoy se cuenta con tecnología más avanzada que el polígrafo como imágenes de resonancia magnética, encefalografía y electroencefalografía magnética. Potentate... Flores was about 41 years old when he joined the Masons in 1978, the first step to becoming a Shriner. At the time, he was working for the 149th Texas Air National Guard. “Many of my co-workers were Masons – almost my entire staff, in fact,” he said. “But it wasn’t until I asked about the ring that they were able to invite me to join,” he explained. “I was very curious about that ring.” In fact, his staff very badly wanted to invite him to join, but that’s not the way the organization works. So they jumped at the chance when he asked about the ring, using it as a way to tell him about the organization. “To be a Mason one must ask to be a Mason – it is not based on invitations or solicitations – there is never, ever any pressure,” Flores said. They caught him at just the right time too, because Flores was considering joining the Knights of Columbus, another service organization. But Flores was intrigued by the Masons, and the more he learned, the more he wanted to learn. He found the biggest challenge was really absorbing the material he had to cover at the very beginning. “Learning everything by heart was the biggest challenge – it took me three months just to learn the basics, at about 10 hours a week after work,” he explained. It may have seemed like a slow process to “El Segundo,” but the fact is that most new members average about six months to reach that point, about half as fast as the enthusiastic Flores. The basics cover the first three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craftsman and Master Mason, and all the information

Flores thought he was the first Mason in the family, but much later learned that the honor belonged to an uncle in Mexico – the broader scope of the organization is international, as well. Membership in the Masonic lodges or the Shriners is not based on any religion, Flores points out. “We take good men and make them better,” he said. “But none of this is a religion, although much of the philosophy is Bible-based, and all members believe in God,” he explained. Flores is an active parishioner at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Helotes. “It’s absolutely a myth that Roman Catholics cannot be Masons,” Flores said. In fact, his mother objected when she learned about his plans to join, so he went to visit his priest at San Fernando Cathedral to get clearance and peace of mind for his Mom. “In those days, it wasn’t encouraged, but I would not be ex-communicated either,” Flores said. Recently retired from the Air National Guard after 39 years of service, Flores has been a member of the Alzafar Shriners for 31 years. He and the 2011 board of officers, also known as the Divan, were officially installed earlier this month at ceremonies at the San Antonio Shrine Auditorium. Other members of the board this year include Chief Rabban, Robert Jones; Assistant Rabban, Thomas G. Young; High Priest and Profit, Mario Vargas; Oriental Guide, Jay Dee Thomas; Treasurer, Stuart Simms and Recorder, George Garza Jr.

Just the term Shriners brings to mind the circus, happygo-lucky fellows wearing red fezzes, sporting terrific clown costumes and entertaining the masses, zipping about during Fiesta celebration parades. But the Alzafar Shriners are all about community service and giving what they can to help others. And all that merry-making is really an earnest effort to raise funds needed for the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children that serve kids all across the country. Flores is very proud of the service of these hospitals, which provide free medical care for children to the age of 18, suffering from burns, orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and other maladies. “In Texas, we have two Shriners Hospital locations, one in Houston and one in Galveston,” Flores said. “The only thing not available at our hospitals is the billing office,” he added. With a presence in at least 24 South Central Texas counties, including Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Dewitt, Frio, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kinney, Kerr, LaSalle, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Real, Uvalde, Val Verde, Webb, Wilson, Zapata and Zavala, the new Potentate plans to be very busy this year. He explained the Shriners are truly the “greatest fraternity in the world” and a great opportunity to participate in the “greatest philanthropy in the world.” “With the average of our Shriners somewhere between 65 and 70, we want and need younger people to get interested and involved,” Flores said. Texas Experience pavilion provides unique ‘Texas-centric’ experience By Paul Schattenberg [email protected] If it has to do with the Lone Star State, you’ll find it at the Texas Experience pavilion during the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. The 20,000-square-foot enclosed pavilion, located within the Family Fair portion of the show grounds near the Freeman Coliseum, will be open each day from Feb. 3-20. Its displays will introduce visitors to many of the items grown, produced or manufactured in Texas. They also show some of the state’s flora and fauna and provide information on topics of statewide and broader interest. “The Texas Experience pavilion always has attractive, highquality exhibits,” said Ellen Andrus, exhibit director for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. “Every year we get a lot of positive feedback from people who have visited the pavilion, seen what it offers, sampled the food and taken advantage of its many fun and educational exhibits. “TDA and AgriLife Extension have partnered on the pavilion for several years, and each year it keeps getting better.” Site counts from the 2010 Texas Experience pavilion showed more than 140,000 visitors came through the building over the

18-day run of the stock show and rodeo show, which brought in more than 1.3 million people from Texas and the rest of the U.S., as well as several other countries worldwide. “We have some of the favorite exhibits from last year, but have added many new and different ones this year as well,” said Lupe Landeros, director of the AgriLife Extension office in San Antonio. AgriLife Extension is an educational outreach agency of the Texas A&M University System. Landeros said new AgriLife Extension offerings at the pavilion this year include limited-space gardening exhibits, including patio, square-foot and vertical gardening, an AgriLife Extension library and bookstore, and enhanced entomology and rainwater-harvesting exhibits. “The new AgriLife library and bookstore area will provide a place for people to relax and find out about the many relevant, informational research-based publications available to them from AgriLife Extension. Many are free and address topics ranging from horticulture and gardening to family and consumer sciences, agricultural production, integrated pest management, health and nutrition, the environment and more.” She added that the Bexar County Master Gardener volunteer horticulture program of the agency again will have a booth at which they will provide information, answer horticulture and gardening questions and sell the new “rodeo tomato” plants. “The people from the South Texas Herpetology Association will be here again displaying

many native Texan snakes and reptiles,” Landeros said. “And one of our new partner exhibits this year is the walk-through exhibit from the Edwards Aquifer Authority, which simulates the experience of actually being inside the aquifer.” Landeros noted that many AgriLife Extension exhibits and activities will be of particular interest to children. “We have exhibits like the youth-gardens exhibit, insect collection and identification, and our 4-H exhibit, which are geared toward kids,” she said. “And we have an educational scavenger hunt for kids 5-13 years old, which is a fun activity that also teaches them about Texas plants, wildlife, insects, gardening, character development, good citizenship, natural resource conservation and more.” Landeros said AgriLife Extension staff, Master Gardener volunteers from Bexar and Guadalupe counties, members of the Texas Master Naturalists organization and others devote thousands of hours each year to designing, building, staffing and taking down the exhibits presented in that portion of the pavilion. Results of Trauma Study available to the public Trauma patients suffering severe blood loss who receive the current standard of care have about the same odds of survival as those who receive the standard of care plus low-dose vasopressin, although there is a trend towards improved survival in the patients who receive low-dose vasopressin. Those were the findings of a study, conducted by University of Texas Health Science Center surgeons at the Level I Trauma Center at University Hospital. They also concluded that giving a low-dose of vasopressin decreased the total volume of resuscitation fluid needed over the first five days after injury. Patients were enrolled from February 2007 – February 2009. The purpose was to evaluate vasopressin’s potential ability to increase survivability in critically injured patients in shock. The study was conducted using the exception from informed consent requirements, in accordance with federal regulations. The proposal is to go as high as 24 students for second through fourth grades. “For any teacher, the first thought is that you always put the child first,” Schmidt said. “It’s hard enough to do that with 22 students because of the diverse population.” The extra students translate into more paperwork, more grading, more communication with parents, more emails – all extra duties hitting already overworked teachers. “It’s not just an increase in students. It is less funds for resources, support staff, and it’s a greater demand on teachers,” said Adermann.

Schmidt added, “Our biggest fear is that there won’t be any tutoring money, no math tutors. Sometimes the students just need that little bit to fill in the gaps for the kiddos who are on the edge of not getting it.” The principal has teachers knocking on her door. They want to know whether their positions will be affected. And parents are starting to ask questions, too. Budget analysts have said the expected massive layoffs will have a trickle-down effect on the larger economy. Gonzalez agreed with them. “The school districts historically across the state are the largest employers in their communities. Go down I-35 to Pearsall or go to San Marcos. This is going to be an economic hit like nothing we have ever seen before,” Gonzalez said. NISD isn’t the only local district facing painful decisions. South San Antonio Independent School District (SSAISD) is looking at $5 million in cuts from the 2011-2012 budget. Judson Independent School District (JISD), which is considering placing ads on school buses to generate revenue, is also looking at around $5 million in cuts. JISD, among other measures, is considering eliminating positions across various programs – from art to hall monitors to academic deans. North East Independent School District (NEISD) is possibly facing $86 million in cuts to next year’s budget. San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is possibly facing a $30 to $50 million hit. Other measures being considered within SAISD include: *Eliminate 30 vacant positions through the hiring freeze *Reduce capital expenditures by 50 percent *Reduce staff travel by 75 percent *Reduce department non-staff budgets by 5 percent *Increase the student ratio at high schools by one *Elimination of K-6 Format (impacts two campuses) SAISD officials have also said that in February, the following recommendations will be made to the board: Restructuring the Early Childhood Program, restructuring the Health Plan, Eliminating 69 library assistant positions, reducing contract days for various staff groups, and consolidating special campuses. “Our staff will do whatever it takes … but my fear is that general education teachers, who already have high expectations and accountability, will be overwhelmed and we’ll lose great teachers,” said Adermann.

In this edition: Taft, Brackenridge boys’ teams lead district hoops standings

The sense of urgency is completely different when it comes to high school basketball and soccer seasons in San Antonio. In hoops play, the girls are nearing the completion of their district schedule with the boys still playing another two weeks the most. Most soccer teams across the city are still playing in tournaments, some of them having already begun district play. The other big difference is the inclement weather that soccer players sometimes have to play through – rain or shine - they are out there, as are their devoted fans. Basketball players obviously are cozier playing inside the gym but their determination should never be in question. You could easily say that about teams which was still undefeated in district competition. The Taft Raiders (District 27-5A) are 11-0 and the Brackenridge Eagles (District 29-4A) are 12-0 in boys play. The Jay Lady Mustangs (District 27-5A) are the only team in the city who is still undefeated at 13-0. All of them can make plans to play in the postseason, which will begin later this month. District wins seem to be coming at a premium for other teams, particularly the boys. For example, in District 26-5A, the Churchill Chargers (7-1) and the Reagan Rattlers (6-1) are fighting tooth and nail for a title. In District 27-5A, Taft may reign supreme but the Warren Warriors (9-2) and Clark Cougars (9-2) aren’t playing too shabby, either. In District 28-5A, the South San Bobcats are in first place at 4-1, followed by Corpus Christi Carroll (31) and then the Highland Owls (3-2). In District 28District hoops standings... page 3-B

Hace ya un año, Bernardo De Alba obtuvo una beca otorgada por la organización “The Fincke Cup”, la cual recibió frente a un estadio repleto y contemplado por padres de familia, amigos y profesores de su escuela. De Alba, originario de México, D.F., es un destacado delantero que comenzó a jugar fútbol soccer a la corta edad de cuatro años. A sus doce años llegó a San Antonio, y decidió continuar con su pasión, por lo que se inscribió en el Alamo Force, equipo que más tarde lo llevaría a ganar la copa estatal, motivándose más para seguir

con su deporte favorito. De Alba continuó con sus estudios, ingresando a Ronald Reagan High School, donde decidió participar en las pruebas de aptitud, con el fin de continuar practicando su gran pasión. “Me aceptaron muy rápido en el equipo, y comencé a jugar durante mis primeros dos años de preparatoria como Junior Varsity (JV), continuando el siguiente año como Varsity”, expresó De Alba. Durante su penúltimo año en Ronald Reagan, De Alba sufrió la pérdida de uno de sus buenos amigos, Ian Fincke, quien también jugaba fútbol. Para recordarlo, los padres de Ian se encargaron de crear la organización, “The Fincke Cup”,

con la finalidad de proporcionar becas a estudiantes deportistas en San Antonio que cursan su último año de preparatoria y desean continuar con su educación. “La beca fue hecha a raíz del fallecimiento de Ian, ya que sus padres decidieron crear una organización que pudiera apoyar a todos los estudiantes deportistas que quieren continuar con su educación en la universidad”, comentó De Alba. El primer juego tuvo lugar por primera vez en febrero del año pasado, en el cual el equipo oponente escogió al mejor jugador del equipo ganador (MVP), en este caso, De Alba, quien con dos asistencias para gol, y numerosos goles en partidos pasados, se hizo acreedor de la beca “The Fincke Cup Sportsmanship Award”, con un valor de $2,500 dólares. “Este año le darán una beca al mejor jugador de cada equipo, y el jugador va a ser escogido por el equipo contrario”, dijo el ex delantero de Ronald Reagan. De Alba, de 19 años de edad, utilizó su beca para ingresar a UTSA, en donde se encuentra cursando su primer año de pre medicina. Aparte de ser un estudiante ejemplar, De Alba es voluntario en un hospital y ayuda en clínicas de fútbol para niños de 4 a 14 años, las cuales pertenecen a la organización, “The Fincke Cup”. El futbolista tiene muchos planes para su futuro, sin embargo ahorita desea continuar con sus estudios, y se encuentra en proceso de aplicar en una universidad inglesa en donde jugaría contra reservas de equipos como, Manchester United y Chelsea, y al mismo tiempo

And who will shine? We will see two types of performances on Super Bowl Sunday: boom and bust. After talking to players and coaches on the Steelers and Packers, it is time to give you strong takes on who is ready for the moment, SCHEIN 9 style. We give you the key names and whether or not they will be a boom or a bust in Super Bowl XLV (FOX pregame at 2 p.m. ET, kickoff at 6:29). Some of the results will shock you. 1. Aaron Rodgers This is a boom. And it is to the level of game MVP. I fully anticipate the Packers will eschew the run, spread Pittsburgh out, and Rodgers will throw for more than 300 yards with three touchdowns. By now you should know my

man-crush on Rodgers is out of this world. But it is for all of the right reasons. We talked to Rodgers on Sirius NFL Radio on Wednesday morning in a revealing interview. I’ve always enjoyed my time interviewing Rodgers but this was something special; a conversation that showed his eagerness to deliver a championship to Green Bay. Rodgers told us he asked head coach Mike McCarthy in Week 6 if the two of them could start meeting every Thursday to game plan. He wanted to be as prepared as he could while carrying an intimate knowledge of every play and why it would be a called in a certain spot. Rodgers told us that he said to McCarthy at

the time, “We could have something special here this season and I’m not playing my best. I need to change that now.” It’s that dedication that put Rodgers and McCarthy in a great rhythm and flow with play calls and execution since Week 16. Rodgers is further fueled by Championship Sunday, where he found his play to be unacceptable, saying “I didn’t make a play in the second half. I didn’t hit a receiver. And I threw a pick in the red zone. That’s unacceptable and won’t happen again.” And while Rodgers says he will consider his legacy at another time, he was both reflective on 2008 when his teammates and organization stood by him as some fans still longed for Lord Favre. He knows what a championship would do to cement his legacy in Packer history. The experience in 2008, Rodgers said, helped him become the player he is today. If he could handle the post-Favre situation with aplomb, he could handle anything, including early losses to Miami and Washington, a concussion, five straight win-

or-go-home games, and eventually Super Bowl Sunday. Aaron Rodgers won’t feel the heat Sunday. He has grown battle-tested in a short period of time. Rodgers will pick apart the sub-par corners for Pittsburgh. 2. Troy Polamalu He’s a fantastic player. Ronnie Lott told me this week that Polamalu could go down in history as the best safety of all time, and that says something. But I think his Super Bowl will be a bust. (I just got the shakes typing that.) I don’t believe the Defensive Player of the Year is 100 percent healthy. He missed tackles against Baltimore in the playoffs and wasn’t really a factor against the Jets in the AFC title game. Rodgers, when he is cooking like he was against Atlanta, can spot a wounded cat like Polamalu. 3. Ben Roethlisberger I have way too much respect for Ben in the big spot to say anything else but boom. I think Roethlisberger will have a stat line similar to what he put up

against New York, which frankly wasn’t that good. He will complete about 10-14 passes, throw a couple of picks and take some unfortunate sacks. But he will also make huge plays on third down with his legs and arm. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told us he thought Ben played great against the Jets and thought the stat line was wrong when he saw the page before his postgame news conference. It will look strangely similar, but on the losing end. 4. James Starks I think his Super Bowl will be a bust. I’m a Starks fan. I liked him back at the University of Buffalo under Turner Gill. But nobody runs on Pittsburgh. I think he gets 10-12 very unsuccessful carries. 5. Rashard Mendenhall In talking to both Tomlin and Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Bruce Arians this week, they both acknowledged that Mendenhall set the tone and tempo for the Steelers against the Jets. make a big play on third down or in the red zone. Tomlin raved about how he leads by example. Miller is a tough, clutch ball player who defines Steeler football. It’s a boom. 9. Mark Murphy He made the decision to cut Favre loose in 2008 very early in his tenure as Packers president after replacing Bob Harlan. The Packers president and CEO told us this week it was so important for everyone in the brass to be unified, especially when the public reaction was “split down the middle,” as Murphy recalls. Frankly, it was much worse than that. But Murphy, general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy knew exactly what they were doing. Their vision will be on full display Sunday. BOOM!

4A, the only San Antonio team that is in the thick of the district title chase are the Brennan Bears (6-2), who are in third place behind Boerne Champion and Kerrville Tivy , both 7-1. Brackenridge has a stranglehold on District 29-4A matters but the Edison Golden Bears are hot on their trail at 10-1. The Lanier Voks then follow at 9-3 and Burbank Bulldogs 8-3. In girls’ play, Reagan (81) and the Roosevelt Lady Rough Riders (7-3) are the top teams in District 26-5A.

Besides Jay, the Stevens Lady Falcons are the only other team who has doubledigit victories out of District 27-5A. Highlands is the only San Antonio team making a dent in District 28-5A as it is 6-1 compared to first-place corpus Christi King, which is 6-0. Brennan is in first place by itself in District 28-4A. The Kennedy Lady Rockets (12-1) and Brackenridge (10-3) are the best teams in District 29-4A. SOCCER Teams from District 27-

5A are the only ones who have already begun to play games with playoff implications in place later this year. In boys’ play, the O’Connor Panthers are 2-0 followed by Clark at 2-0-1. In girls’ competition, the Brandeis Lady Broncos and Marshall Lady Rams are each 3-0, with O’Connor at 2-0. Among the boys teams that are starting off hot in pre-district are Reagan, Churchill, Southwest, Kennedy and Harlandale. For the girls, MacArthur, Brennan, Kennedy are off to a good start.

Remember the Titan; Fisher’s out

The Tennessee Titans fired Jeff Fisher after 16 seasons in Nashville. During his tenure he lead the Titans franchise to the playoffs six times including three 13-3 seasons, four division titles and an AFC title. Overall, Fisher was 22 games above .500 in the regular season, but in the playoffs he was a pedestrian 5-6. It’s no secret over the last couple of years Fisher and Titans owner Bud Adams relationship slowly disintegrated after feuds over who to start at

quarterback. Fisher felt that veteran Kerry Collins gave them the best chance to win and that Vince Young wasn’t quite ready to lead the team. For quite some time Adams politely stepped aside and admitted Fisher knew the personnel better than he did, ultimately giving Fisher the final decision as to who should start at quarterback. In the end, Fisher decided to go with Kerry Collins at the beginning of the 2009 season resulting in a 0-6 start. Shortly after, Adams told Fisher he needed to start Vince Young and shake things up on the offensive side of the ball.

By Doug Klupsch [email protected] There is going to be a lot that is going to determine the outcome of the final game of the year and it starts and ends with the defense on each team. In the AFC title game the Steelers took care of business at home against the Jets and the Packers did their part to get into the big game by beating the Bears on the road. In their victory the Steelers held the Jets to just 3.2 yards per carry. The Packers only allowed the Bears to complete 50% completion of their passes and forced three different quarterbacks into the game. The Steelers are 24-6 versus NFC opponents since 2004 including two Super Bowl victories over the Seahawks and the Cardinals and including a last second victory over the Packers last year. In the game against the Packers, the Steelers piled up 537 total yards while the Packers had 436 total yards. Hence, they’ve shown that they can move the ball with great efficiency against the Steelers. Both quarterbacks in this game need to be aware of key players on the opposing team’s defense. The Packers Aaron Rodgers needs to know where

Lamar Woodley, James Harrison, and Troy Polamalu are at all times. While Ben Roethlisberger needs to locate and adjust to Clay Matthews Jr., Charles Woodson and B.J. Raji presnap because each of these guys can make big plays and impact a game at any given moment. The Packers best chance to win will depend if their running game gets going so they then can work playaction. In turn making their spread offense that much more effective. On defense they need to blitz the A-gaps where center Doug Legursky could be making his first NFL start. The Steelers best shot at bringing home their record setting seventh Lombardi trophy is to run the ball well with Rashard Mendenhall. If they can do this they will keep the Packers defense honest. When the Packers start blitzing look for Ben Roethlisberger to extend the play as well as find the hot reads and take advantage of the one-on-one coverage down the field. In the end, it’s going to come down to whose defense plays better and is fresher down the stretch when it matters most. In addition, the team with a more balanced offense will come out victorious. Dick Lebeau’s defense time and again confuses opposing quarterbacks, and they often don’t know who is blitzing and who is dropping into coverage. In the end it will give Aaron Rodgers problems despite his ability to move in the pocket much. In what may be one of the best Super Bowls we have ever seen, I see the Pittsburgh Steelers edging out the Green Bay Packers 24-21. Ben Roethlisberger will win his second Super Bowl MVP and a third Super Bowl title.

Fisher swallowed his pride and made the change at the request of his owner. After handing the starting job to Young, he led the Titans to a fiery 8-2 finish. Fast forward to the 2010 season and again the Titans were in a situation in which they didn’t have a quarterback who they felt could perform at the level they needed. The Titans started off 5-2, but struggled to a 6-10 finish. So this begs the question, why did they decide to fire Fisher so late? Was it because they wanted to work something out to where he could come back and coach the final year of his deal? Both possibilities, yet neither were the case. According to a statement released by the Titans organization, “It became evident that consensus was increasingly hard to find and reality wasn’t matching the vision we discussed. It is unfortunate that this decision is coming at this juncture, but we believe that we have reached the point where change is in the best interest of both parties.” Ultimately, the Titans waited far too long to fire Fisher and have already lost out on many good head coach candidates, but according to Freddy Coleman of ESPN radio, the Titans have been granted permission to interview the New York Giants defensive coordinator

Perry Fewell. Currently, the Titans have no head coach and no quarterbacks on their roster they feel confident in (Kerry Collins is 38 and Vince Young will be

either traded or cut). Looking forward, the Titans have the eighth pick in the upcoming draft at which point I believe they will take a quarterback. Regardless, it’s

Adams franchise and team and will likely place a very high priority on the quarterback position come draft time in April if they choose to use their first round pick or not.

Ayotte Jr. [email protected] This past Saturday, hundreds of Boy Scouts of America hit the streets on “Good Turn Day” to collect donations on behalf of Goodwill and the San Antonio Food Bank. Donations collected will support Goodwill programs that help San Antonians overcome disabilities, lack of training and any other obstacles that hinder individuals from finding a job. Over 60 years ago, Goodwill Industries and Boy Scouts of America started a tradition of collecting clothing and non-perishables. The project rallies Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts across the country. Scouts go door to door collecting clothing, electronics and collectibles which are then given to Goodwill Industries. They use the process of selling these goods to provide job training for disabled people. This is the largest single-day collection of clothing and non-perishable items in the nation and is part of

the biggest job-training program for disabled Americans in the country. Moreover, this was a chance to teach scouts about community service. They traveled in pairs, knocking on doors in neighborhoods, asking for donations of used goods to help people with

disabilities. This kind of task that builds character, social skills, and caring—qualities that the Boy Scouts of America strive to teach youth. Overall, “Good Turn Day” promotes Scouting and the good deeds that will result from the program activities.

The Faith Family Clinic is a nonprofit, primary care clinic providing affordable, quality, and compassionate medical care to the working uninsured in San Antonio, Bexar County and surrounding counties. According to a report provided by the clinic, almost one quarter of the population is working without insurance in Bexar County. The Faith Family Clinic is a collaboration between Baptist Health System, Christus Santa Rosa, Methodist Health System, University Health System, UIW School of

Un empresario hispano demuestra que las industrias verdes están abiertas para los latinos

(EFE).- El hispano Ernesto Gutiérrez creó una empresa que ofrece servicios de reparación medioambiental, construcción y energías renovables con la que ha tenido gran éxito, en momentos en que el Gobierno impulsa esos proyectos. Su empresa, Allied Industries Inc., ha registrado un destacado crecimiento económico en los últimos años, a pesar de la crisis que ha azotado al país. “No ha sido fácil, pero mucha gente me ayudó a crecer con buenos consejos, siempre busqué trabajadores con muchas ganas de hacer las cosas bien”, detalló el empresario de 43 años radicado en California. Gutiérrez, es daltónico y por ello le resulta imposible distinguir algunos colores, sin embargo, y de manera paradójica, su exitosa carrera comenzó precisamente trabajando como pintor. Con un diploma de secundaria como su único certificado de estudios y con mucha necesi-

Pagaba sus cursos con trabajo, pintando las edificaciones, y se apasionó tanto con su aprendizaje que el director de la escuela le ofreció un trabajo como instructor y así se convirtió en 1994 en profesor e investigador de todo lo relacionado con la industria del medio ambiente,

químicos, tóxicos y residuos peligrosos. En 1995 fundó su actual empresa Allied Environmental y asistió a todos los cursos para nuevos empresarios buscando información sobre financiación, leyes, asesoría para hacer negocios con empresas del gobierno y más. El desempleo entre los hispanos bajó al 11.9% en enero

(EFE).- El índice de desempleo entre los hispanos tuvo una bajada notable en enero y se ubicó en el 11.9 por ciento de esa fuerza laboral, aunque sigue por encima de la tasa general de desempleo, que es del 9 por ciento. Según informó hoy el Departamento de Trabajo, el índice general de desempleo fue del 9%, comparado con uno de 9.4% en diciembre. El desempleo de los hispanos en diciembre había marcado el 13 por ciento. En enero, 20 millones de hispanos tuvieron empleo y 2.7 millones seguían sin tenerlo. Asimismo, el mes pasado se redujo levemente la fuerza laboral hispana, lo cual significa que menos personas estuvieron empleadas o buscando empleo activamente. En términos generales, la economía estadounidense tuvo una ganancia neta de 36 mil puestos de trabajo. Después de un incremento de 121mil empleos en diciembre, la ganancia de enero fue la más pequeña en cuatro meses. Los datos contradicen los cálculos de la mayoría de los analistas que esperaba que la tasa de desempleo subiera una décima, hasta el 9.5 por ciento, y que hubiese una ganancia neta de unos 150 mil puestos de trabajo. Aunque la ganancia neta total de empleos fue decepcionante, el índice de desempleo se redujo porque hubo medio millón menos de personas buscando un puesto de trabajo.

La medición del empleo que hace el gobierno de Estados Unidos deja fuera del cuadro a aquellas personas que han abandonado la búsqueda de trabajo. Así, a pesar del crecimiento natural de la población, la fuerza laboral bajó de los 153 millones de personas de diciembre a 153 millones en enero. Durante la recesión que comenzó en diciembre de 2007 y concluyó en junio de 2009 -la más profunda y prolongada en casi ocho décadas- Estados Unidos perdió más de 8 millones de puestos de trabajo. En enero, el empleo gubernamental perdió 14 mil puestos de trabajo, 12 mil de ellos en los gobiernos municipales y estatales y 2 mil en el gobierno federal. El llamado “índice de subempleo” -en el cual están las personas con empleo a tiempo parcial pero que buscan uno de tiempo completo y las personas que quisieran trabajar pero han dejado de buscar empleo- bajó de 17% en diciembre a 16% en enero. Los datos muestran que aproximadamente 13 millones de personas quisieran tener un empleo pero no lo encuentran. El presidente del Consejo de Asesores Económicos de la Casa Blanca, Austan Goolsbee, enfatizó el hecho de que en el sector privado hubo en enero un incremento de 50 mil empleos. Casi todos, cerca de 49 mil, se dieron en el sector manufacturero, que registró el mayor

incremento desde agosto de 1998. En cierto grado, la evolución del mercado laboral refleja el impacto de las condiciones meteorológicas: en enero hubo pérdidas de puestos de trabajo en la construcción y el transporte, más afectados por las tormentas invernales. Otra encuesta que el Departamento de Trabajo efectúa en los hogares muestra que el mal tiempo impidió que unas 886 mil personas concurrieran a trabajar en enero, comparado con un promedio de 282 mil a lo largo de los cinco meses de enero anteriores. “En todo 2010 el sector privado añadió 1.1 millones de empleos, el crecimiento más grande desde 2006”, explicó el funcionario quien añadió que “la reducción de 8 punto porcentual en el índice de desempleo en los últimos dos meses es algo positivo pero el índice sigue siendo inaceptable”. La empresa Lowe’s, la segunda cadena más grande de tiendas que venden artículos para la construcción y remodelación de hogares, indicó que contratará de 8 mil a 10 mil empleados para los fines de semana, anticipándose a un incremento de las ventas al terminar el invierno. Los dos mayores fabricantes de vehículos automotores también tienen planes de expansión. Ford contratará a más de 7 mil trabajadores a lo largo de los próximos dos años, y General Motors añadirá un tercer turno y unos 750 empleos en su planta de ensamblaje en Flint, Michigan.

Fair exhibits valuable 1819 map of U.S. (EFE).- A 1566 map of Cuba and Hispaniola, and a rare 1819 map of the United States showing Florida as U.S. territory, are two of the valuable pieces on show this weekend at the 18th Annual Miami International Map Fair. The cartography exhibit, organized by HistoryMiami, is made up of 200 pieces, some of extraordinary historical value. A total of about 500 exhibitors and antique dealers are taking part, chiefly from the United States, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Britain, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, which makes this fair the third most important worldwide, after those of London and Paris, and the biggest in the Western Hemisphere in number of exhibitors. “In this edition we have a series of really interesting maps and all kinds of objects related to cartography, plus an outstanding catalogue of antique dealers all over

the world,” Victoria Cervantes, vice president of communications for HistoryMiami, said. Map lovers and collectors will be able to admire and acquire, for $9,500, a unique map of Cuba and the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) dated 1566 and attributed to Ferrando Bertelli, in an admirable state of preservation. Or a very detailed map dating from 1819 with a unique feature: inserted is a box showing the Florida peninsula, which indicates that at the time the eastern part of that state was officially considered a U.S. possession as a result of the Adams-Onis Treaty, which fixed the new border between the United States and what was then the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The work of English cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith (17501823) and with a price tag of $28,500, it is the first map in which Florida, where Spaniard

The fair also offers a series of talks by experts in the field of cartography including “Longitude” author Dava Sobel, Anne K. Knowles, Associate Professor of Geography at Middlebury College; and James Ackerman, Director of the Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography at the Newberry Library.

Obama buscará un acercamiento con Latinoamérica durante su gira por la región (EFE).- El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, buscará un acercamiento con Latinoamérica durante la gira que emprenderá la próxima semana por unos países de la región, informó un funcionario. El subsecretario de Estado para asuntos de Economía, Energía y Negocios de Estados Unidos, José W. Fernández, destacó en Miami la importancia del viaje de Obama en cuanto a analizar nuevas oportunidades de negocios y examinar algunos problemas. Fernández fue el principal orador en el foro “Perspectivas de las Américas”, organizado por la Asociación de Cámaras Americanas de Comercio en América Latina y el Centro de Política Hemisférica de la Universidad de Miami. Durante su disertación presentó un balance general de la gestión adelantada por la actual Administración en materia económica, de negocios y de intercambio comercial con América Latina. Mencionó que otros proyectos especiales en los que se trabaja con la región están relacionados con la prevención de la corrupción. En cuanto a los retos de Estados Unidos con la región, Fernández dijo que están vinculados con la implementación de mejores políticas en el área energética, de seguridad y de reformas civiles. Por su parte, Eduardo Solorzano, presidente de la empresa Walmart Latinoamérica, indicó que la región cada vez despierta más a la inversión extranjera y el intercambio económico. Reveló que en 2010 ese gigante minorista tuvo ventas por más de 36 millones de dólares en la región. De igual forma, informó que la compañía invirtió más de 2.2 millones de dólares el año pasado en sus diferentes mercados y sobrepasó las 3.3 tiendas en nueve países siendo Brasil, México y Argentina los principales mercados. La empresa también tiene presencia en Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y El Salvador.

Una campaña insta a las latinas a cuidar su corazón

(EFE).- A sus 37 años, Gloria Boisvert, no pensó que la indigestión y el cansancio que sentía fueran algo serio, no obstante acudir al médico para un chequeo le salvó la vida y evitó que se convirtiera en una más de las miles de mujeres hispanas que mueren cada año por enfermedades cardíacas. Tras una breve prueba de esfuerzo en 2008, realizada por su médico para descartar cualquier problema, Boisvert, que se define como una persona atlética y saludable, debió ser sometida a una cirugía de emergencia para restablecer la circulación normal en su corazón. Si bien Boisvert reconoce que la recuperación no fue fácil, ahora lleva su cicatriz como si fuese una “medalla de honor” y un recordatorio a otras mujeres de que es necesario prestar atención a esta condición. “Uno se da cuenta de lo afortunado que es y por eso decidí en ese momento hablar públicamente sobre mi historia personal y compartirla con otras personas para tratar de crearles conciencia sobre el problema”, dijo la maestra de secundaria. Boisvert actualmente participa en la campaña Go Red Por Tu Corazón de la Asociación Americana del Corazón, que insta a las mujeres a vestir con este color este 4 de febrero para crear con-

ciencia sobre la enfermedad. Las enfermedades del corazón son la causa de muerte número uno entre las mujeres hispanas y en promedio éstas tienden a verse afectadas hasta diez años antes que las mujeres blancas no hispanas, según datos de la Asociación Americana del Corazón. De acuerdo con la organización, diversos estudios indican que incluso ante la ausencia de otros factores de riesgo, las mujeres hispanas tienen probabilidades más altas de sufrir enfermedades del corazón. Solo una de cada tres mujeres hispanas sabe que las enfermedades del corazón son la causa de muerte principal para ellas, apenas tres de cada 10 dicen que su doctor les ha informado que enfrentan un riesgo más alto y únicamente una de cada cuatro saben sobre los tratamientos disponibles. Las enfermedades cardiovasculares causan la muerte de más de 435,000 mujeres al año, lo que representa cada minuto, de acuerdo con cifras de la organización. Asimismo, las enfermedades del corazón son la causa de muerte entre hombres y mujeres latinas en Estados Unidos, donde cada año estos padecimientos cobran la vida de 39,000 hispanos. La campaña destaca la importancia de promover un estilo de vida que ayude a reducir los facto-

res de riesgo de las enfermedades del corazón, como la obesidad, la diabetes, el colesterol y la presión arterial alta, el estrés, los antecedentes familiares y la falta de actividad física. Un estudio de los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) con sede en Atlanta, estima que al menos 68 millones de adultos en Estados Unidos padecen de presión arterial alta y 71 millones tienen el nivel de colesterol “malo” (LDL) alto, y que dos de cada tres no reciben el tratamiento necesario. De acuerdo con la Asociación Americana del Corazón, el 80 por ciento de los problemas cardíacos en las mujeres son producto de “malas decisiones” relacionadas a su alimentación, ejercicio y fumado. “El objetivo de la campaña es despertar en la comunidad latina más conciencia de que está en las manos de cada uno tratar de prevenir este tipo de enfermedades por la salud de uno y por la vida de uno”, declaró a Efe Martin Llorens, portavoz de la campaña Go Red Por Tu Corazón y estilista del programa “Despierta América” de Univision. La campaña busca promover un estilo de vida más saludable, que incorpore una mejor alimentación y mayor actividad física y tome en cuenta las tradiciones familiares y costumbres culturales.

Las estadounidenses mueren más por enfermedad cardiovascular que por cáncer (EFE).- Las enfermedades cardiovasculares cobran más vidas de mujeres que todos los tipos de cáncer combinados y pese a que son la principal causa de muerte entre latinas, sólo el ocho por ciento lo considera el problema de salud más importante. Estadísticas más recientes de los Institutos de Salud señalan que en 2007 un total de 306,246 mujeres murieron en los Estados Unidos debido a enfermedades cardiovasculares, comparado con 270,018 que perdieron la vida por todos los tipos de cáncer combinados. Y aunque muchos creen que más mujeres mueren por cáncer de mama, las estadísticas señalan que ese año, cobró la vida de 40,599 féminas en el país. “Es una diferencia impresionante” entre las muertes por enfermedades del corazón y las de cáncer, dijo la investigadora Cristina Rabadán-Diehl, directora de la División de Enfermedades Cardiovasculares del Instituto de Corazón, Pulmón y Sangre, de los Institutos de Salud. Recordó que es una enfermedad que no discrimina por sexo, origen étnico o edad, aunque “la mujer tiene una predisposición más que el hombre” e insistió en que la prevención es la clave. Destacó que contrario al cáncer, el 82 por ciento de los casos de esta enfermedad se puede prevenir y lamentó que muchas mujeres no se hayan concienciado que es importante un chequeo de salud rutinario. “Al no hacerlo, desconoce su presión arterial, su nivel de colesterol, si es prediabética”, entre otros factores, dijo RabadanDiehl, portavoz de la campaña “La verdad acerca del corazón” (The Heart Truth, con la página http:// www.nhlbi.nih.gov/educational/ hearttruth). Indicó que tradicionalmente la mujer se dedica más a cuidar de su familia que de su salud. “Tenemos que seguir enviando el mensaje de la prevención de la enfermedad cardiovascular y eso no significa que no tengan que preocuparse por el cáncer”, afirmó la madrileña y explicó que diversos factores inciden en la enfermedad cardiovascular, como el genético.

Padres sin niños y niños sin padres

Eran cinco parejas suecas. Cinco parejas de matrimonios jóvenes. Cinco parejas que, a pesar de provenir de distintos lugares y distintas capas sociales, llevaban un mismo rumbo y los guiaba una misma intención. Estas cinco parejas de matrimonios sin hijos iban para Colombia, en un vuelo de Avianca, a fin de adoptar como hijos a cinco niños colombianos. Era pura casualidad que las cinco parejas tomaran el mismo vuelo. Cada pareja había esperado tres años para que llegara el ansiado momento.

Pero el destino dispuso otra cosa. El avión de Avianca se estrelló en las afueras del aeropuerto de Madrid el domingo 27 de noviembre de 1983. Las cinco parejas murieron en el accidente. Ellas quedaron para siempre sin hijos. Y cinco niños colombianos quedaron sin padres. La vida está llena de planteos sin solución y de preguntas sin respuesta. Uno podría pensar: si estas cinco parejas de matrimonios jóvenes, ansiando tener un hijo adoptivo, hacían el sacrificio de volar de Suecia a Colombia, de invertir grandes sumas de dinero y de abrir su corazón generosamente a un niño extraño, ¿no debieron haber tenido un final mejor? ¿Por qué tuvieron que tomar precisamente ese avión fatal? ¿Por qué tuvieron que escoger precisamente ese día para volar, pudiendo volar en cualquier otro? ¿Por qué no adoptaron niños de Suecia, que hay muchos, y les habría salido más económico y más fácil, y no ir a buscar niños a Colombia, haciendo un viaje tan largo

y con el resultado que tuvieron? Podemos multiplicar los interrogantes hasta el infinito. Podemos dibujar un gesto amargo en la boca y protestar contra Dios, que es contra quien casi siempre protestamos. Aun podemos musitar una blasfemia. Sin embargo, ninguna de esas reacciones demostraría sabiduría. No vale la pena enojarse contra hechos cuya razón profunda escapa a nuestros sentidos. Hay hechos incomprensibles, es cierto; hay sucesos que nos parecen terriblemente injustos, es verdad. Pero por encima de todas estas complejidades ingobernables de la vida, hay siempre un Dios de orden y justicia, y Él sabe por qué permite lo que permite. La fe en un Dios que es Padre bondadoso nos ayuda, si no a entender el porqué de todas las desgracias que nos ocurren, a hallar la resignación, la fortaleza y el estímulo necesarios para seguir adelante. Más vale que invoquemos a Cristo en el momento de dolor incomprensible.

Por Carlos Rey Muchas cosas sucedieron durante la Campaña de 1948.... Durante el ataque aéreo a San Isidro...., olvidando el almuerzo y el peligro, nuestros soldados tiraban a los aviones, en serio. Tiraban con rifles Mauser, pero no alcanzaban la altura de los atacantes, que se jugaban la vida constantemente, un poquito más arriba de la balacera. La altura era una de las causas de la mala puntería de los aviadores. Y las bombas se les iban gastando en vano, después del vuelo desde San José hasta San Isidro, que no era corto para aquellas naves pequeñas. Los pilotos necesitaban bajar más, aun aumentando el peligro de que nuestra riflería los alcanzara. Y no-

Termina, concluye, has lo necesario para completarlo. Si cambiaste de rumbo afina lo que se requiere antes de formarlo. No te quedes a medias. Requieres carácter, determinación para decidir, para ir, para rehusar. Desechar y rehusar es un factor determinante en tu carácter. Permites, siempre permites, accedes siempre accedes, y no se trata de no ser flexible, pero si de ser claro, definido, contigo y con los demás. Tu actitud hará que la gente te vea con respeto o no. Tú determinación hará mantener las manecillas del reloj caminando. Sé a donde voy, sé lo que he recibido, y lo que debo hacer. No detengo el reloj de la meta ¡me espera! Aún, el hijo prodigo, hasta que no regresó a casa de su padre, no disfruto

lo que siempre tuvo. Hay privilegios concedidos, palabras dichas en la realización de tus anhelos, órdenes dadas. Camina los siete pasos, no seas flojo. Prepárate para la maestría, termina la preparatoria. Vacía la cochera de cosas viejas para que lleguen las nuevas, ilusiónate, pero sobre todo, ten el carácter, determina hacerlo. No hay pretextos. Lo que te di, lo tengo para ti, no te lo he condicionado, no lo condiciones tú. Eso sería cobarde de tu parte y tú no eres un cobarde, eres valiente en Mi por que estoy a tu lado, contigo y de tú favor. Si logras sostenerte, crecerás. Crees que eres de aquellos que no pueden

Y así como en 1948 en San Isidro, Costa Rica, doña Andrea apagó el fuego de los fogones debido a que entendió mal lo que su jefe militar quería que hiciera, también hay quienes actualmente apagan el fuego del Espíritu Santo a causa de que entienden mal la voluntad de Dios, su Jefe espiritual. Pues Dios quiere que nos preocupemos más bien de que en nuestro fogón no deje de arder el fuego de su presencia, no sea que nos quedemos con hambre espiritual.2

La máquina de calibre 30 tenía más alcance que los rifles, y disparaba más tiros. Además tendría... su blanco más cerca, más bajito. ¡Dicho y hecho! “¡Paren el fuego! ¡Paren el fuego!” hubo que gritar muchas veces. Pero un ejército de patriotas voluntarios no suele ser muy disciplinado. Y... una de las órdenes más difíciles de acatar es la de parar el fuego, cuando ya la gente ha entrado en calor.... ... El problema se complicó... porque, cuando yo ordenaba que pararan el fuego, un soldado nuestro bien escondido no sé donde, gritaba: “¡Denles pija, muchachos! Cuantas más bombas de esas caen, ¡más‑se‑goza!” Por fin... a las avionetas se les acabaron las bombas, y se tuvieron que ir de regreso a San José sin hacernos ni un rasguño. Misión cumplida,

IWHS welcomes visitors from Korean sister school By Addison Quiroga

Incarnate Word High School (IWHS) held an international welcome from Korean students last Tuesday, at the McGowen Gymnasium. The Korean students were from Salesio Girls High School in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Gwangju is San Antonio’s sister city in Korea. They were visiting Incarnate Word to show their culture to American students. The scholars vivaciously showed off their talents with a traditional dance which excited the Incarnate Word High School students. “It is really eye-opening,” said IWHS sophomore, Bianca Garcia. “It was really fun watching it, they looked like they had fun.” The show continued as the students expressed their acting. In front of the audience, the international students expressed stories. Many Incarnate Word students giggled as the international students

displayed acts of humor. The students continued as they showed the Incarnate Word students their unique culture. At the end of their presentation, the students showed a PowerPoint of their school and where they came from. Incarnate Word High School was very proud of the visiting students. “I thought the students were

courageous to stand up in front of an audience,” said principle B.J. Nelsen. “The visiting students have been here for three weeks, they range between 13 and 16 years old.” The Korean students eventually wrapped up their show as they sang a gospel song. When the event was over, Incarnate Word students and staff gave a standing ovation.

The two runner-ups will receive a team jersey and

The new team logo likely will play a prominent role in yet another competition, the “Select Our Uniform” contest tentatively scheduled for March and April. “This is San Antonio’s team,” Hartman noted. “We’re involving fans every step of the way toward actual NASL competition next year.” The Scorpions FC also recently announced that Nike Inc. has signed on as a sponsor and they also introduced Harvey’s Heroes, an organization funded by local businessman and philanthropist Harvey Najim that will enable 500 special-needs or underprivileged children to attend every Scorpions home game.

· 3 cups chopped, cooked chicken, about · 4 to 5 chicken breasts · 1 (8-ounce) package shredded colby and Monterey Jack cheese blend · 4 ounces cream cheese, softened · 1 chopped red bell pepper · 1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped · 1 tablespoon ground cumin · 1 1/2 teaspoons salt · 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper · 1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts · Water

~ Preheat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F. ~ In a large bowl using a rubber spatula, combine the chicken, colby and Monterey cheese, cream cheese, red pepper, jalapeno, cumin, salt, and pepper. Remove 1 pie crust from pie tin onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a 15-inch circle. Cut out rounds, using a 3-inch cookie cutter. Re-roll dough as needed. Repeat procedure with remaining pie crusts, making 12 to 15 circles total. Arrange 1 round on a clean, flat surface. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the edges of crust with water. Place 1 heaping teaspoon of chicken mixture in the center of the round. Fold the dough over the filling, pressing the edges with a fork to seal. Repeat with the remaining rounds and chicken mixture. Place empanadas in deep-fryer for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown. Top with con queso dip. Note: Up to this point, the recipe can be made ahead and frozen for up to 1 month Chili Con Queso Dip · 1 pound package Cheddar (recommended: Velveeta) · 1 (16-ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained · 1 (4-ounce) can diced green chiles · 2 teaspoons hot sauce ~ In a medium sauce pot, slowly melt Cheddar over medium/low heat. When cheese is fully melted add tomatoes, chiles, and hot sauce, stirring with spoon until combined well. Pour cheese dip into a small casserole dish and serve as a dip for the cheesy empanadas or pour on top for a real cheesy effect.
