About the Production

»I am just like all this stuff that is happening around me, I am behaving just as irrationally as this economy, which keeps making completely sudden and impulsive gestures, and which you warily try to avoid like some seriously neurotic lover, who vacillates between depressed lethargy and hysterical overreaction and then has to be pacified with tons of money and you can’t leave it alone for a second without it doing something really stupid and which is constantly threatening to fall apart at the seams or take itself off to a different country where it can get all those things that it had searched for in vain with us, for much cheaper and much better, and which wants to be courted, constantly, with millions and even more millions and with tax free incentives and privileges. this economy is the last diva for whom we are truly willing to give up everything. and like stupid young boys we are constantly running around after it, trying to get it in hand, but we have no means, no instruments, to tame this hysterical market. it somehow wants to constantly tear our whole life apart, it wants to throw our forms of society and state over board, it chucks us about like flotsam while we are somewhere sitting about with a therapist trying to find out WHO WE REALLY ARE, DEEP DOWN INSIDE and learning TO RESTRICT OURSELVES TO THE FUNDAMENTALS, meanwhile the market is lustfully squandering our millions, one after the other, having a nice couple of days for itself with our credit cards, burning through all the reserves we have so carefully put by in recent years, it dances and celebrates and has fun while we simply sit there like confounded idiots and watch it all in disbelief and we have no idea how we are ever going to find a way to actually relate to all that is happening right before our very eyes. and by now, all we do is watch, we don’t actually do anything anymore. I think its high time we saw some people who actually do something, who actively do something, people for whom the word crisis does not trigger a pathetic state of paralysis but people who have realized that this word is an instrument of power: where is the next cut back, who is next for the chop, a constant state of emergency. But the crisis is the new constant state and people are being torn between the external and internal states of insecurity, of panic, of fear, of longing, of hysteria, of the search for a different life. Nothing is dependable from now on, everything can, at any given moment, simply fall asunder, how do I deal with that? What can I rely on? Who or what can I use to orientate myself and how do I finally EXPERIENCE something substantial again? retreat? silence? departure?« The collaboration between Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk began in 1998 with »Nothing Hurts«, an evening about injury, vulnerability and the numbness of a youth spent in the 90’s. In last years’ season at the Schaubühne, »TRUST« was the first continuation of this exceptional dialogue between author and choreographer, director and dancer. The movements of isolation, of grotesque air steps and futile approaches gave theatrical wings to Falk Richter’s texts about the longing for a lasting sense of trust, the labyrinthine descriptions of the world and the disturbed conversations in relationships.

From the Press

»The series of dance-theatre-hybrid-forms (associated also with the work of Constanza Macras) continues in the Schaubühne at a bold pace with »PROTECT ME«. Once more it is figures of dance which lend gravity to the concrete questions, fears and needs of the individual when faced with the impersonal space and abstract discourses of our system. ›Are we five days before the revolution?‹, van Dijk asks towards the end. This kind of theatre seems to be wishing for just that.« (Anne Peter, nachtkritik, October 27th, 2010) »Yet again the dialogue between text and dance is a success: individual, cheerfullygrotesque torrents of text, such as those by Judith Rosmair, are as convincing as Anouk van Dijks quirky but lonely dance solos.« (Eberhard Spreng, Deutschlandradio Kultur, October 27th, 2010) »The blows they [the characters] deliver and receive, time and time again, are just as artificial as they are self-inflicted. This, demonstrated with a consistent persistence by Anouk van Dijks explosive choreography, is the strength of the evening. There are no pretty, floating figures here, the dancers heads snap backwards again and again, as if an imaginary hinge on the chin were to suddenly give way. They collapse and implode against all rules of the anatomy or burst asunder as if a giant hammer-blow had struck the stage between them.« (Doris Meierhenrich, Berliner Zeitung, October 29th, 2010) »Text and body language come together in this joint piece by Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk to form a meaningful alliance, […] as in his previous texts, and with a flair for the satirical, Richter depicts absurd situations of a society which delegates and outsources everything - their responsibilities, their feelings and even their everyday.« (Katrin Bettina Müller, taz, October 29th, 2010) »Most impressive, however, are the speechless images that Richter and Anouk van Dijk create time and time again. At stage left, the young and beautiful exhibit themselves in a cubicle; at stage right, the aged, half-naked father awaits his son, while, in between the two, the dance continues. It’s like a split screen, only three-dimensional, and therefore all the more effective.« (Tobi Müller, Frankfurter Rundschau, October 30th/31st, 2010) » (…) in their self-obsessed search for real feeling, for something to hold onto in a cold, market-led world, they form part of contemporary theatres most pertinent characterisation of todays ›Generation Psychotherapy‹.« (Barbara Behrendt, kultiversum, November 2nd, 2010)

Studied direction under Jürgen Flimm at the Universität Hamburg; since then he has been a freelance author (works including »Gott ist ein DJ«, »Nothing hurts«, »PEACE«, »Electronic City«), translator and director. He presented his first big production »Silicon« during the Junge Hunde festival 1996 at Kampnagel Hamburg. At the Schaubühne: - »PEACE« by Falk Richter (2000) - »Far Away« by Caryl Churchill (2001) - »4.48 Psychosis« by Sarah Kane (2001) - »Electronic City (Das System 1)« by Falk Richter (directed by Tom Kühnel, 2004) - »Under Ice (Das System 2)« by Falk Richter (2004) - »Amok WENIGER NOTFÄLLE (Das System 3)« with texts by Martin Crimp (2004) - »Hotel Palestine (Das System 4)« by Falk Richter (2004) - »The Seagull« by Anton Chekhov in a version with texts of Falk Richter (2004) - »The Disturbance« by Falk Richter (2005) - »Three Sisters« by Anton Chekhov in a new version by Falk Richter (2006) - »State of Emergency« by Falk Richter (2007) - »The Cherry Orchard« by Chekhov in a reworking by Falk Richter (2008) - »Intrigue and Love« by Friedrich Schiller (2008) - »TRUST« by Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk (Direction and Choreography: Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk, 2009)

Anouk van Dijk (Direction and Choreography) Anouk van Dijk was for almost a decade a lead soloist with amongst others the Rotterdam Dance Group and Amanda Miller’s Pretty Ugly Dance Company. Since 1996 she dedicated herself exclusively to the creation and performance of her own work. She has been running her own dance company since 1998 and was awarded the prestigious Dutch Lucas Hoving Prize for her work in 2000. Her works have since then been touring internationally extensively. Anouk van Dijk has by now created fifteen full evening works and more than twenty shorter choreographies, receiving critical acclaim from international press and audiences. During her career Anouk van Dijk developed her own movement system, the Countertechnique, which she both applies in her own work and teaches internationally. The Countertechnique discards the dominant opinion in the dance world that all movement relates to one center in the body. Instead, following the coutertechnique, dancers always keep their alignment and balance by continually giving counterdirections to each movement. The Countertechnique creates a dynamic balance, allowing for extreme changes of direction and producing spectacularly large and articulate movements.

About Schaubühne Berlin

The Schaubühne Berlin represents a contemporary, experimental and international theatrical process. Since its foundation in 1962 well-known directors have created theatre pieces, initially at the Hallesches Ufer site, and, since 1981, at Lehniner Platz. Countless tours all over the world, prizes and awards for directors, productions and the ensemble speak volumes about the artistic team’s success in developing the Schaubühnes renown under Thomas Ostermeiers leadership. With Thomas Ostermeier and a selection of outstanding directors such as Falk Richter, Ivo van Hove, Katie Mitchell, Michael Thalheimer, Volker Lösch, Friederike Heller, David Marton and Egill Heidar Anton Pálsson as well as the choreographers Anouk van Dijk and Constanza Macras, the Schaubühne will continue its tradition of contemporary and critical new interpretations of classics from Greek myths through Shakespeare, Chekhov and Ibsen. Alongside them, the core of the repertoire is made up by contemporary authors, as documented by over 50 world and German-language premieres in the last ten years, an intensive collaboration with in-house playwright Marius von Mayenburg, Falk Richters diverse projects and dramaturgical work, the annual competition for young playwrights and playwrights as yet unknown in Germany, as well as the Festival of International New Drama (F.I.N.D.). For this festival, on eweek of the year is devoted to presenting new plays from both Germany and abroad. Since the 2008/09 season, the Schaubühne has been a founding member of the European Theatre Union Prospero. This union sees theatres from Portugal, France, Belgium, Italy, Finland and Germany joining forces to develop productions together and exchange guest productions. The collaboration opened with Thomas Ostermeiers production of Ibsen’s »John Gabriel Borkmann« in Rennes.
