Got to admit that the magazine’s reconstruction was a good decision, many readers are happy although they’d waited long enough and also, my fellow business supporters! For this month’s issue, we interviewed 2 pet lovers who successfully adopted abandoned animals with the help from Petfinder.my. Remember guys, adopting is always better than buying! As you guys are aware about the animal cruelty in Pulau Ketam, Petster Magazine is really disappointed about the way the dogs were treated. I believe every animal lover now would have the thoughts of rescuing those abandoned dogs but sometimes it is better to leave the job to those who are more experienced, right? No point creating for problems for them if anything would possibly happen to you guys. After a few discussions with the authorities, Petster Magazine has decided to do our part as well. We’d printed 100 T-Shirts labelled above and these T-shirts are to be exchanged with just a packet of dog food. No cash donations, and these accumulated dog food packets will then be transferred to the authorities for the poor dogs out there. H.O.M.E Carnival organized in conjunction with Petster Magazine’s 1st anniversary! Summit, USJ – Project H.O.M.E, a voluntary service project, by 4th semester Diploma in Communication students, has finally reached its finale. H.O.M.E Carnival organized in conjunction with Petster Magazine’s 1st anniversary was a one day carnival event and the aim of the carnival was to create awareness on cruelty against animals as well as to provide homes for the abandoned animals in SPCA and MDDB. H.O.M.E Carnival, which was sponsored by Petster Magazine and Samsung, was held at The Summit, USJ outside the main entrance on Sunday, 5th April 2009 from 10am to 4pm. The SPCA (Society Prevention for Cruelty to Animals), MDDB (Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better) and Pets Icon (Animal Groomer) were among participants involved in H.O.M.E Carnival. As part of Communication Project Management subject assignment, Project H.O.M.E’s objectives were to provide voluntary service and help to collect old newspapers, used hand towels for SPCA, spread awareness against animal cruelty, educate pet owners on proper means to care for pets and to find homes for pets in SPCA and PAWS. During H.O.M.E Carnival, different activities were held such as celebrities performances and “Grab RM1,399 in 60 seconds” pet talent competition. Celebrities were also there with us to combat animal cruelty by doing stage performances and giving speeches.

The celebrities who were at H.O.M.E Carnival are Manhand (local Chinese celebrity band), Crossfire (local Chinese celebrity band), Prem from Fly.fm and Roshan from Mix.fm. Manhand and Crossfire did stage performances by singing three song each. DJ Point of Manhand brought along his own cat, Catrina to the event and enjoyed a free grooming. Crossfire members showed much support by introducing themselves as different dog breed, namely Elwy the lead vocal as Chihuahua, Kit the drummer as Daschund as well as Jim the guitarist as Rottweiler. Both bands confessed to their love for pets and spoke of their own pets. As for Prem and Roshan, they both gave

Despite only providing voluntary service to SPCA, Project H.O.M.E had also managed to raise approximately RM5,000 by selling SPCA merchandises as well as collecting donations.

Project H.O.M.E had also organized a Charity Futsal Tournament, three road shows and did various voluntary services for SPCA before reaching to its finale, H.O.M.E Carnival. Charity Futsal Tournament was held on 7th of March 2009 in Sports Planet, Subang Grand. A sum of RM 883 was made as profit to be kept for Project H.O.M.E funding. As for the three road shows, it was held separately in Taylor’s College Petaling Jaya and Taylor’s University College (SS15) targeting the college students on the 11th March 2009 at 12:30pm to 2pm and on the 12th March

The aim of the SPCA is to protect defenseless animals and to put a stop to their suffering. Established in 1958, the SPCA provides temporary shelter to unwanted animals in Selangor and the Federal Territory. These include mainly cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs, which are usually unwanted by their owners. From here, we try to re-home as many as possible but with more than 1,100 animals arriving every month (reaching some 13,000 annually) the shelter is constantly challenged by a shortage of space and limited funds. PetFinder.my’s 1st Anniversary Celebration 1,200 - That is the magic number of adoptions achieved by PetFinder.my at its 1st Anniversary on April 18th, 2009. It was an extremely fruitful year for this online community of animal lovers, and they have certainly gone a long way towards helping the homeless animals across the nation. To celebrate this joyous occasion and establish a more solid relationship among its members, PetFinder.my has hosted its 1st Anniversary Dinner at the prestigious Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, Selangor. The magnificent ballroom bathed in a rich golden aura, with romantic saxophone melodies conjuring up a soothing ambience. Over 80 animal lovers were present, including guests from SPCA and PAWS. The event kicked off at 7pm with welcome speeches delivered by Ezer Ratchaga and Andy Koh, the founders of PetFinder.my. Ezer, serving as emcee of the night, explained on PetFinder.my’s inception, its missions and visions; while Andy provided an account of PetFinder.my’s achievements to date and thanked the community for their efforts in making this service a success. Awards were then given out in appreciation of members that have provided significant contributions to PetFinder.my. The party atmosphere began building up as Andy and his friend Michael Tsan performed PetFinder’s theme song, Party Time to a cheering and dancing crowd. This song was composed by Andy to commemorate PetFinder’s anniversary, dedicated to the homeless animals and tireless rescuers.

Dinner was served thereafter, with a sumptuous buffet of Continental dishes. The ballroom was filled with laughter as people went tablehopping to meet the friends that they have so often corresponded with online, but never before in person. Trigger-happy attendees busied themselves snapping photos and recording videos. The Rhumba rhythm of Michael Buble’s Sway set off the night’s first game – Musical Chairs, with an aim of letting the attendees relive their fun childhood memories. Participants were seen squeezing, screaming, hopping and laughing their ways through as chairs were reduced from the initial 50 down to the final one. The second game, Balloon Mania, saw participants execute 5 dizzying spins before staggering off to collect their balloons, blew them up and burst them on the chairs with their bums. Both teams were evenly matched and a hard battle was fought right up to the last balloon. Ezer hosted the final game, a trivia quiz of 20 questions ranging from pets to science, with each correct answer winning the participant an attractive prize. A Lucky Draw signified the finale of the night, with 5 lucky attendees receiving crystal bracelets, pet products, hamper and vouchers donated by generous sponsors. The exhausted but satisfied crowd posed for a group photo before calling it a day. No one left emptyhanded though, as each attendee received a beautiful PetFinder mug as a door gift. “We certainly hope that we have given everyone some wonderful memories to cherish, and a renewed enthusiasm to continue this tough but deeply satisfying journey of helping the animals,” Andy and Ezer grinned.

Help Save Turtles with Just One Signature Petaling Jaya, 21st April 2009 – WWF-Malaysia today launched the “Egg=Life” campaign aimed at improving the protection of marine turtles in Malaysia. The campaign, which will run from Earth Day 22nd April to 30th September 2009, targets to gain pledges from 40,000 members of the public. People who sign up in support of WWF-Malaysia’s “Egg=Life” campaign will pledge to: support laws that will ban the sale and consumption of all turtle eggs throughout Malaysia, support the call for comprehensive and holistic Federal legislation to conserve marine turtles & never consume turtle eggs, or trade in turtles or their parts. Anyone can sign up to support the campaign and help our marine turtles at wwf.org.my. Organisations and colleges that would like to undertake signature drives in support of the campaign can contact WWF-Malaysia for educational materials and postagepaid hardcopy sign-up forms. At today’s launch, WWFMalaysia Executive Director/CEO Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma said, “Turtles play a critical role in keeping marine ecosystems healthy; the same ecosystems which sustain our fisheries and tourism industries that provide food and livelihoods for millions of people. Marine turtles are threatened with extinction due to various factors, including: the practice of consuming turtle eggs, becoming accidentally caught in fishing gear, poorly planned coastal development, marine and nesting beach pollution as well as illegal trade of turtles and their parts.” He explained that leatherback turtles have already been declared functionally extinct in Malaysia. In the 1950s, there were 10,000 leatherback nests in Rantau Abang each year; now there are less than 10. Moreover, turtle protection laws are inadequate. Current Federal law on turtles are limited. Under the Federal Constitution, it is the states that have the authority to make laws on turtles. State laws vary from state to state and are simply inadequate. Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma appealed to the public and said,“Comprehensive and holistic Federal laws, additional resources and heightened enforcement are needed to effectively protect our turtles. Each signature in support of WWF-Malaysia’s “Egg=Life” campaign will lend weight to efforts aimed at improving turtle protection

legislation in Malaysia, and I hope that everyone will log on to wwf.org.my and help save turtles with just one signature.” In Peninsular Malaysia, WWF-Malaysia works with partners including the Department of Fisheries Malaysia to conserve turtles at key nesting rookeries including Kem Terendak, Pulau Upeh and Padang Kemunting beaches in Melaka as well as Ma’Daerah and Setiu beaches in Terengganu. Melaka’s beaches are home to the peninsula’s largest population of hawksbill turtles – with 20 to 30% of the state’s total nestings occurring on the 120 meter strip of beach in Pulau Upeh, the densest nesting beach in Melaka – while a significant population of green turtles nests on Terengganu’s beaches. These nesting beaches must be protected from pollution and development because they are critical to the survival of our marine turtles. WWF-Malaysia (World Wide Fund for Nature-Malaysia), the national conservation trust, currently runs more than 75 projects covering a diverse range of environmental protection work. If everyone were to buy dogs/cats, then there will be too many orphan dogs/ cats around, and eventually they will put to sleep. It is very cruel the way animals are bred I’ve seen one big one myself, but my mouth was made to shut. There’s no animal protection in this country. When the buying stops, the breeding will too! 2) How did you hear of PetFinder.my, and what do you think of the service? I found when I was in need of adopting a pet, eventually got hooked on to it. 5) Please tell us more about your adopted pets, and how you take care of them. What I see, even from my past experience, adopted pets seem to be more grateful towards the owner. Feeding and spending lots of time with them is very important. For those intending to adopt, please do not adopt unless you are committed of spending at least 5 hours after work with them. 6) Can you explain the importance of these pets in your life, and how they are equally adorable even if they are not pedigrees? Animals are animals, whether pedigrees or not. Even when I feed the stray cat backdoor, it gives a wonderful feeling. I think that humans need a pet more than the pet needs you. Pets show you the true meaning of life, helping others, sigh...it’s just great. 7) Do you plan to adopt any further pets in the future? Temporary fostering maybe but not for self-adoption. I don’t think I have the financial capability anymore. I do not like to feed just anything for my pets, I make sure that they get the best out of me, even when it comes to their toys. 8) What advice and suggestions do you have for the readers? Please do not support breeding. And if you have pets, it’s good to neuter them when they’re still young. And, please spend good time and take good care of the pets you have. Read a lot about them, and understand them better. Trust me, it will make a wonderful experience. Animals are just like us, treat them the way you want to be treated. 19

Ask Our Vet Question: Can cats drink milk? Answer: Yes, it is OK to give milk to your cats - but only as a treat. They CANNOT survive on milk alone, they need to have water available. If they do not have water, they will dehydrate. Milk can sometimes cause diarrhea in adult cats - if that happens to your cat, then stop giving it any. But it’s not going to cause any serious problems if you give your cat milk once in awhile, and most cats really like it. I’d be leery of giving the cat anything fancy though. Chocolate milk, for example, might be a bad idea. I’ve given my cats ice cream (not much, I just let them lick the bottom of the bowl after I’m done). They like it and haven’t had any problems.

will be possessive of them and often growl or get angry if you try to take them away. 3) Bones can lead to levels of calcium and phosphorous in the dog’s body that are unhealthy. It is possible for them to be too high, and if they are it will keep the dog from absorbing other nutrients it needs. There is a very detailed discussion about this by several different vets here, including people who have experience with wolves. Some think it is perfectly fine - but only with certain kinds of bones. Others do not think it is a good idea. I would err on the safe side, because there is no reason your dog needs a bone as opposed to other chew toys of some kind.

Question: Why do dogs wag their tails?

Question: Can I feed a bone to my dog? Answer: That is not really a good idea. If you want to give your dog a bone of some kind, I would go with a rawhide “bone” - they’re good for the dog to chew on and they aren’t made of anything that can hurt them. Why shouldn’t you give bones to your dog? 1) They can splinter and injure the dog. Small bones like chicken bones tend to do this most, but even a bigger bone can break apart when the dog chews on it. The dog can choke on the little pieces, or it can swallow then and get injured as sharp edges poke into the insides of the dog. 2) Dogs can get very aggressive with them. They

Answer: Most of the time, it’s because they are happy or excited. This has been the traditional answer, but it is not correct in all situations. Tailwagging is a form of communication by the dog: it is broadcasting its emotions. In the wild, this would be to other dogs, because dogs are social animals and communicate through expression and posture more than through vocalization. In the wild, it happens for several reasons. The biggest one is submission: dogs wag their tails to other dogs that are higher up in the canine social structure. Generally, submissive dogs will have their tail wagging and positioned down low, nearly tucked into their legs. However, this isn’t always the case. Dogs sometimes wag their tails when angry, too. Usually it looks a little different - it will be wagging more at the tip, and it will be held higher in the air. It shouldn’t be hard to mistake the two - don’t look at the tail, and instead look to whether the dog is baring its teeth, barking, or generally acting aggressively. Don’t take it to be friendly or playful just because the tail is wagging. Also, different breeds wag differently. Some don’t wag their tails very much at all. Others don’t really have much tail to wag. Generally, however, they all do it for the same reason.

Our Furry Friends How to train your sugar glider?

The key to training a sugar glider is to start young. A baby sugar glider is an open heart just looking for someone to love. ( source : www.petplace.com ) “Assuming you’re starting with a youngster, I recommend you get them when you have two or three days off from work,” suggests Sharon Massena, a breeder and owner of Massena’s Menagerie in Auburn, Wash. “Just hold him cupped in your hands as much as possible for the first 48 hours. After that, he’ll be pretty well in tune with you and won’t be afraid of you.” Some glider breeders recommend new glider owners carry their animal around with them on their body, tucked into a shirt, for the first couple of days. (Hint to all who try this: Wear an undershirt. Glider claws can be murder on human skin.) In fact, you’ll become your sugar glider’s favorite “tree,” a tall, comfy, secure place to run to when the rest of the world looks frightening, Massena says. Be Consistent and Positive Gliders have cat-like personalities. They do what they want to do, and pretend not to hear you if you want them to do something they’re not interested in doing. But with consistent effort, your glider can learn to come when you call him. This is a good trick to know if you take your pet outside and he accidentally scampers away. The best way to establish a trusting bond with a glider is through positive reinforcement. The animals do not react well to harsh discipline. Never attempt to hit or flick them with your finger. They are small and delicate, and you could hurt them without realizing it. Better still, keep watch on your glider and reward good behavior with a treat. “They will work for rewards,” Massena says. Some favorites are nuts, especially slivered almonds, raisins, cereal – finger foods you might give a toddler. “They can eat nearly anything,” Massena says. “My gliders like whole grain rice and scrambled eggs.’’ Just use common sense to avoid feeding it heavy or sugar-laden foods that aren’t good for humans either. House-Training House-training typically takes very little time, Massena says. Gliders typically are ready for a potty stop within the first couple of minutes of waking up, then they’re good for several hours. Make sure they’re in their cage, over an appropriate corner or box, when nature calls. Since sugar gliders are noctural by nature, they spend most of the day asleep and don’t really become active until after dark. “Lots of people carry them to work in their pockets all day, then they come to life at night,” Massena says. “Of course, I don’t recommend that you take them into restaurants.” She knows one glider who, whenever a sack of fast food is brought into the car, dives head first into the sack. “He loves French fries,” she says.

Starfish - Sea Stars Sea Stars are commonly referred to as Starfish, but they actually are not fish at all but echinoderms. Starfish characteristically have five arms extending from a central disk like a star, hence the common name Starfish or sea stars. Represented by over 2,500 species, families of importance to the aquarium include the Oreasteridae, Himerometridae, Ophidiateridae, and Ophiomyxidae. Found in all oceans, they prefer rocky crevasses and sandy regions in reefs. Most are found in inter-tidal zones, but a few are found in deep water. Most prefer to live singly, though they will congregate for sexual reproduction. They are rarely bred in the home aquarium. Perhaps the most intriguing feature of the Starfish is their ability to regenerate lost arms. Under ideal conditions, the lost arms will turn into a complete Starfish. Each arm of a sea star has two rows of “feet” called podia that are used for attachment, locomotion, and respiration (gas exchange). Many have an additional sucker attachment at the end of each arm. Movement is achieved by a hydraulic system of water-filled channels. Serpent Starfish use their arms to push and pull themselves along the substrate and rocks. It is important to keep Starfish under water during acclimation and placement in the aquarium. Serpent and Brittle Starfish are popular additions to reef aquariums that contain live sand as they constantly stir the sand bed and provide oxygen to the beneficial bacteria living in the sand. The mouth and stomach is located on the underside of the animal in the central disc. Before food is absorbed, the stomach is often pushed out of the body and placed over the food to digest it. Smaller Starfish eat the microalgae found on rocks and algae mats; larger ones will eat other Starfish, Urchins, Clams, and other bi-valves, and some Anemones. In the aquarium, they can be fed small pieces of fish, placing the food near or even under the Starfish.

The Trouble With Pest Birds

Avian Visitors Sometimes Become Problem Birds. Many people love birds and know that they’re important in the ecosystem, but sometimes birds come into conflict with humans, becoming bird pests. Today, many of the world’s birds are in decline, suffering the effects of habitat loss, pesticide poisoning, overhunting, competition for food supplies, lethal obstacles such as cell phone towers and tall buildings appearing in the skies, and many other threats. Some birds, however, have adapted quite well to growing cities and swelling human populations. These birds have healthy populations too, and all too often they create problems with their foraging, roosting, and nesting habits. Bird control and the creation of bird control products is a growing industry. What are the issues with pest birds?

1. Birds can create problems for people in many ways, including: 2. Bird roosts in human communities cause annoying noise levels, quantities of offensive bird droppings, odor problems, and a risk of disease. Birds’ nests plug rain gutters and vents, damage machinery, and create a fire hazard in electrical fixtures. 3. Occupied nests of protected species such as swallows and birds of prey often prevent scheduled maintenance of buildings and other structures, and delay construction projects. 4. Bird droppings can discolor paint, erode concrete, corrode materials such as copper and steel, and damage plastics. 5. Bird droppings can contaminate packaged foods and water supplies. 6. Bird droppings sometimes contain organisms that are hazardous to human health, such as the fungal spores of histoplasma. 7. Ectoparasites such as mites and ticks can transfer to humans, causing irritation and spreading diseases such as Lyme disease. 8. Birds can carry diseases such as avian influenza and West Nile virus that can cause serious disease in humans. 9. Birds on airport runways, or flying in the path of aircraft create serious safety issues for aviation. 10. Birds eat grain and fruit crops intended for human and livestock consumption. 11.Unwanted bird species sometimes monopolize garden feeders, keeping more desirable species away, or consuming all the food. 12. Introduced bird species, such as European Starlings in North America, compete with native species for limited nesting sites. 13. Territorial birds, such as geese and wild turkeys can become aggressive toward people and sometimes cause significant injury.

Bird controls can help get rid of pest birds. Many types of bird controls have been developed for dealing with bird problems. Some, such as poisons and fire bombs involve lethal control; however, most people favor methods that exclude or discourage pest birds over killing them. Screens can keep them from nesting and perching; spikes deter them as well; noise makers and devices that deliver a mild electrical shock can stop birds from making themselves at home. Systems of bird birth control are also becoming more common.
