THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor’s Note: Looking at God I can remember hearing some people say of their worst adversaries and enemies, “I hope they burn in Hell!” When we hear our first reading today from the Prophet Malachi, there is a powerful reference to that possibility. When we human beings think about the fact of the great last judgment scene, some of us tend to think of what the outcome might be for others. The famous Italian poet Dante tried to identify which people would be relegated to the different circles of Hell. Although the desire to assign places for others in the afterlife may prove tempting, the sacred texts and their authors summon our attention and our energies elsewhere. Do they call us to look within ourselves and find cause to worry about the end times? Do they invite us to forgo criticizing the speck in another’s eye while ignoring the beam in our own? Do they urge us against procrastination that keeps us from preparing to welcome Jesus? In some ways, the living word that guides us all through the liturgical year does indeed offer these suggestions. But more importantly, before any suggestion can be taken to heart or any question truthfully answered, the sacred authors direct believers, collectively and individually, to look at God. Looking at God does not mean that one must seek out the beautiful vision or await a dramatic theophany. Rather, looking at God means taking a cue from our ancestors in the faith, who learned to discern the face of God by remembering all that God had done for them. God was their creator, protector, provider and guide. God was their liberator and champion, their mother, their father, their brother, their breath. God had been their loving, faithful and forgiving spouse. Looking at God created an ambience of truth in which they saw not only God but themselves and the fact that their sins had distorted the image of God they were to reflect. Looking at God also kept them from looking at one another with disdain. On the contrary, looking at God gave them a new prism through which to look at others with eyes of sympathy, appreciation and respect. As we look at God’s face as it has been reflected in our own lives over the past year, we also will probably experience the painful truth that we are not all we should be. Nor have we done all that we could do to reflect to our belonging to God. For that reason, the thought of the Lord’s second coming among us may fill us with dread and hopelessness. Nevertheless, we are to leave the judging of ourselves and others to God (Malachi). We are to set aside our fears and speculations; we are not to listen to naysayers or prophets of doom. Rather, we are to persevere in trusting God (Luke). We are also to busy ourselves with the ministry that Jesus has entrusted to us. Instead of minding the business of others (2 Thessalonians), we are to continue to look at God and struggle each day to give ourselves, our world and all others to God’s good keeping.

NOVEMBER 13, 2016 es así como vamos sintiendo el paso de Dios por nuestra Trigésimo Tercer Domingo existencia y es así como vamos construyendo el verdadero Del Tiempo Ordinario. templo de Dios, el cual no se debe equiparar con edificacioLa liturgia de este domingo, esta marcada por un lenguaje nes ostentosas, sino con la Iglesia-comunidad de creyentes apocalíptico, como señal de que algo cambia y es el preluque se inspira en la Palabra de Dios y se mantiene firme en dio del final del ano litúrgico y también nos habla de cómo la esperanza de Jesús resucitado. sera el final de los tiempos en esta tierra. Por 415 personas nos unimos en eso Malaquías, haciendo uso de este lenguaje apocalíptiperegrinación a la catedral co, alienta al pueblo justo que sirve enteramente al Señor, San Patricio y de esta manera indicándoles que ya llegará el día en que se hará sentir la nos unimos a toda la iglesia justicia de Dios sobre los que no guardan su ley; que ellos universal dándole fin al ano no son los que realmente dirigen el caminar de la historia, dedicado a la MISERICORsino que es el Dios amante de la vida quien la guía, conduDIA. Allí concluimos con una ciéndola por el camino de la paz y de la vida. Todos los que eucaristía presidida por nuescaminan por el camino del Señor serán iluminados por el tro Padre, guía y Pastor, Fr. Ed. “sol de la justicia” que irradia su luz en medio de la oscuriP. Alberto Espinal dad, en medio del dolor y la muerte. El salmo que leemos hoy es un himno al Rey y Señor de toda la Creación, quien dirige con justicia a todos los pueblos de la tierra, quien es amoroso y fiel con el pueblo de Israel. Dios es un Dios justo, que merece ser alabado por todos, pues ha derrotado la muerte y ha posibilitado la vida para todos; por ello toda la Creación lo alaba, celebra la presencia de ese Dios misericordioso y justo en medio del pueblo liberado. Es un salmo de agradecimiento por los beneficios que el pueblo ha recibido por tener su esperanza puesta en el Dios de la Vida. Muchos de los creyentes de Tesalónica, concretamente las “clases superiores”, pensaron que no debían preocuparse por las cosas de la vida cotidiana, como el trabajo, y que más bien debían esperar, de brazos cruzados, la inminente venida del Señor y dedicarse a la ociosidad. Pablo llama fuertemente la atención sobre esa actitud, pues son personas que viven del trabajo ajeno, son explotadores de los otros (esclavos) y, gracias a ello, acumulan riquezas sin esforzarse en absoluto. Es a ellos a quienes Pablo se dirige con vehemencia: «el que no trabaje que no coma» (v.10), ya que esta actitud no es propia de la enseñanza de los apóstoles. Puede ser que la presencia magnífica del templo de Jerusalén alentara la fe de los judíos hasta el punto de ser más significativos la arquitectura y el poder de la religión que el mismo Dios de Israel; puede ser que fueran más importante los sacrificios, el ritual, la construcción majestuosa... que las actitudes exigidas por el mismo Dios para un verdadero culto a él: la misericordia y la justicia social. Por eso Jesús afirma que el templo será destruido, pues no posibilita una relación legítima con Dios y con los hermanos, sino que crea grandes divisiones sociales e injusticias. Es importante ir descubriendo en nuestra vida que la experiencia de fe debe estar atravesada por el servicio incondicional a los demás;
