Baby Boomers

are Moving to Palm Village

In 2014, five baby boomers moved to Independent Living Patio Homes at Palm Village. The attitudes of Baby Boomers have brought many shifts to society. And one of them is a wonderful blessing for Palm Village. Interviews with our resident Baby Boomers revealed a common attitude: they wanted the decision about where to live in their retirement years to be theirs while they are still young, not by a family member who had to make the choice for them because of their health issues. Bravo to each of our Boomers: Stephen Vincent, Terry and Marilyn Chappell, Linda Radford, and Chris Holmen for their foresight. They followed the advice of most residents of Palm Village who made the move when they were much older, “Don’t wait

to move here. You will love it.” And it is wonderful that the moniker, Nursing Home has been replaced in the boomer’s vocabulary with the more accurate moniker, Retirement Community. Even though the attitude of foresight is a commonality, each of them has unique reasons for moving to Palm Village. The youngest of the group, at age 64, Stephen Vincent decided he wanted to live in a community that provided all of his housing needs so that he would never need to move again. And his three-bedroom patio home, beautifully furnished and decorated, surely is a lovely home. Although Steve did expect to be retired, because he is an accomplished pianist and organist, he

ciate about Palm Village is the abundance of life experiences that are shared with all by those who have seen many more birthdays than I.” Chris’s daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren live right across the street from Palm Village. That becomes a double bonus in light of his attorney’s statement that, “Statewide, Palm Village gives the best bang for the buck.” And the choice to move here proved even more wonderful because Chris is especially pleased with the Parkinson’s Support Group right at Palm Village and the spiritual component. As a former schoolteacher, he has maintained time in the classroom as a volunteer at both Washington and Lincoln Elementary Schools. A marvelous attitude that is truly shared by all of the Baby Boomers and the others who call Palm Village “home” was voiced so well by the Chappells when they said, “we don’t think about what we gave up by moving from our former home. We just think about all the good things we are getting here at Palm Village.”

Lovely Patio Homes Show Residents’ Styles With a look at these photos, you will see that many of our Patio Home residents have a flare for decorating. We listen when residents have requests for customization of their Patio Homes, and accommodate them by making the changes whenever possible. Some modifications are as simple as different faucets, while some are more complicated, such as replacing carpet with hard wood floors. Stephen Vincent requested modifications to the doorway to his “music room.” Our goal is for our residents to add their own personality and style to their home. As Patio Homes become available, we are remodeling with new flooring, lighting and kitchen counter tops. With the planned changes to the Courtyards and the Garden Room, Palm Village continues to be a lovely place of residence indoors and out.

Cyprus2015 Palm Village has strong ties to the Moadieh Evangelical Center for Assisted Living in Beirut, Lebanon because in April  2012, the founding senior manager, Joyce Eid, shadowed Palm Village Staff, visited with residents, and worked with senior management for education and preparation to open the first known Assisted Living Center in Lebanon.   In September at Cyprus2015, representatives from the Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Health Services, Palm Village Retirement Community, Moadieh Evangelical Center, and Ain Wazein will meet at a study conference in Cyprus with twelve nursing home providers sponsored by Sunni, Druze, and Shiite branches of Islam, and Evangelical, Catholic, and Orthodox religions. In support of peaceful interfaith conversation to assist the elders in a region affected by warfare and intolerance, we are asking you to make a contribu-

tion to cover the expenses of the conference. “Our world so marked by divisiveness and violence needs more sources of hope and less despair. May we all do our part in contributing to healing and hope and peace,” said Rick Stiffney, President of Mennonite Health Services. Saving Water Leads to Landscape Changes Palm Village is dedicated to being a good steward of water, a resource that has become so precious in California.  Our current landscape takes approximately 1 million gallons of water each year to maintain the plants and grass.  In place of the thirsty plants, we will plant more drought tolerant plants with a landscape design that will offer our residents and their families and friends,

open spaces where they can gather in a lovely area, perhaps for a barbecue under a gazebo. We are hoping that you will join us in our stewardship and make a donation to our Courtyards project.
