ne of the consequences of having a hobby in today’s world of constant exposure to professional marketers is that someone is always trying to sell you something. My phone and computer can be heard dinging, beeping and buzzing non-stop, alerting me to new marketing emails with a great deal that I cannot pass up. My vinyl record hobby, especially, has become my “buy it now” kryptonite, enticing me continuously with new music, reissues of older stuff and box sets of more stuff that probably do not need. If I was more of a sensible guy, I would go for that $9.99 per month subscription to Apple Music, have 30 million songs in my cloud and be done with all of this physical media nonsense. But sensible, I am not. The other day, my inbox was met with an ad for a recent Simon & Garfunkel box set of their entire (six records) Columbia Records catalog. Now lately I have been better about resisting the urge to buy reissues of albums, especially when I already own older copies. It is mostly economic, as these new pressings are generally more costly than CDs or digital downloads. They also take up room, though - my living room, actually. There are only so many versions of “Aja” that you can own (I think I have five or six - don’t judge me). Record companies love reissues. They appeal to people that do not have an original copy of course, but they also attract the “completists.” These are the people that own, well, six copies of “Aja.” They have even started reissuing their reissues. Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue was a master-

piece, both musically and sonically, on just about every medium, probably including the Victrola. But do you need five versions of it? I might have carried this logic over to this new Simon & Garfunkel box-o-reissues, especially since there is no shortage of Bridge Over Troubled Water in the used vinyl bins. Finding original copies of all five of those Columbia catalog albums in perfect, noiseless condition on vinyl, however, is a tall - and expensive order, (or so I reasoned as I entered in my credit card information). Hey, it was Labor day weekend and it was on sale. Don’t judge. The albums are truly wonderful, by the way. I must have heard “The Sound of Silence” dozens of times, but never in the way that these records captured these two young guys at the onset of their careers (or the pinnacle, if you are Garfunkel). No longer dusty sounding tracks from a greatest hits CD, the guitars have resonance and bite and their harmonies are distinct and pitch-perfect. These songs once again have life and youth, and perhaps a touch of leftover 1960s despair instilled deep within the grooves. There were also songs of hope and change, though. One on that first album, called “3 AM Wednesday Morning,” the duo covered another iconic musician’s song - Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are-A-Changin.” I could not help but snicker a bit in the irony of me listening to this song, played back on a new vinyl record in 2015. I guess as much as things change, perhaps they also stay the same. Or maybe just the very best parts remain. Lately I have been taking notice of all of the changes in my world over the past thirty years or so. I am not sure what started me thinking about it. Perhaps it is the onset of middle age. It

is also likely to have developed because of my new view through my nine year old daughter’s eyes. Sometimes she will notice something and point it out to me and it makes me think a whole different way. For example, the other day we were watching an episode of “Full House” (talk about old things becoming popular) and she was puzzled to see one of the characters talking on a phone. The phone, you see, had a cord attached - something that most nine year olds have never seen before. “Is that like a phone, dad?” she asks. “It IS a phone.” I answer. “Huh” she shrugs, before focusing again on whatever John Stamos was doing. If you really stop and think about what your house, your office, your life looked like in 1980 and compared it with today, there are so many changes that have forever altered our lives. So many new inventions and technologies have come during my lifetime - and some already have gone. I remember for example when I first heard that you could record and watch your own tapes - on a TV. There was Betamax, VHS, Pioneer’s Laserdisc and then eventually the DVD. The DVD is still alive and well (at least for now) but there are at least two generations that have never seen a tape medium for anything. My generation also saw the first generation of home personal computers and its steady progression from 64kb powerhouse with a green-hued CRT and dot matrix printer, to the arrival of the mouse with the first MacIntosh’s of the mid-80’s, to the place we are today with a computer built into just about everything we can buy. I could go on and on, but I am sure you get the point. One thing I have noticed about more recent advancements, is how they seem to be less focused on a defined single purpose and more focused on

being tools for future innovation. For example some time ago, Motorola redefined the cellular phone as it existed at the time from being a rather large and awkwardly-proportioned object, to being a much smaller device by virtue of a flip-shut cover. The “flip phone” redefined how you could carry and use a personal cellular device because it could easily fit in a pants or jacket pocket. In terms of what you could do with the device, it was basically the same function as the one still attached to Uncle Jesse’s wall. Fast forward to 2015, and the launch of the newest iPhone reveals a dramatically different approach to the intent of the technology. Sure, it is still a phone. And it can access Al Gore’s invention, the internet. And it can retrieve your emails, take your photos and entertain you with games. The real technology, however, is what is embedded in the iPhone (or android). They have onboard GPS, three-axis gyros (motion sensors), ambient light sensors, an onboard barometer, fingerprint sensors, microdetailed location sensors and an accelerometer. “So what?” you might say, about any of these features by themselves. I mean, there are probably one or two obvious uses for each item. The real magic is what the developers are able to do with the entire suite of sensors and available technology that is crammed into these small, Swiss-Army like devices. For example, several companies have developed a heart rate program using the digital flash on the camera as its sensor. I have no idea how it works, but it does. Developers are working on all kinds of creative solutions to everyday tasks and problems, by playing with the tools in the toolboxes of these devices. And as a result, lives are being made simpler, more convenient and even healthier

as a direct result on technology that they carry with them every day in their pocket. Another technology that has moved along, more or less as a direct result of all of these smartphones in the world, are rechargeable batteries. If you can remember the rechargeable batteries of yesteryear, they were pretty dreadful. They did not hold a charge for long, they took forever to recharge and they had a relatively limited lifespan of charges before they would die for good. They were temperature sensitive, and if you did not follow the proper charging protocols, you could kill the battery by not charging it at the correct time. Many many million phones later, the batteries they are using now are, not surprisingly,

just plain impossible. I always thought back to those primitive electric cars that I would see in the 1970s at the car show. They looked like a smaller, more angular Gremlin. I think that Ed Begley, Jr. may have owned one. They could go around 20 miles per hour and probably a couple of miles on a charge. It was basically an electric golf cart with license plates. Probably using much of the same determination that helped launch his earlier success, Paypal, Musk quieted the cynics first with a small, Lotusbased battery-powered sports car and then followed up with his groundbreaking Model S sedan. I had the opportunity to drive Manish Gupta’s Tesla about a year ago and it definitely changed the way I think about electric cars. I guess that I expected that the car would be whisper quiet (and it was), smooth (ditto) and quick (the YouTube videos tell that story), but there was so much that I had not expected that pleasantly surprised me. The dashboard, for example, is all digital and the center console is like one big iPad. Want to move things around? Go ahead. There are options and switches that are more akin to an Apple iOS device than a car. And speaking of that - the Tesla can get updates just like your iPhone - right over the internet. Some of these updates simply tweak the programming of the car, but others make wholesale additions of new features. The car also keeps track of its own maintenance, which is minimal since there are very few moving parts to electric motors. While that in itself is not groundbreaking, the fact is that it contacts Tesla to check in and monitor itself automatically. Remember, too,

“Elon Musk set out to prove everyone wrong when he started his car company, Tesla Motors.” a whole lot better. They are smaller, they last longer, they charge faster and they are more stable than ever before. That last part about batteries being stable is no small matter, especially when they are being placed in devices that people carry in their pockets. It is also important when they are used in other devices - much larger devices - like automobiles. Elon Musk set out to prove everyone wrong when he started his car company, Tesla Motors. Business analysts and would-be investors said that they could never succeed and turn a profit. The automobile industry agreed on the profitability claims, but also doubted whether this project could ever come close to getting off the ground. Starting a car company using conventional technology, after all, is difficult enough. Using batteries and electric motors without any gasoline-based assistance is

OCTOBER 2015 PORSCHEFORUS

5

Auf Der Straße that there is no oil, coolant or gas to worry about. At the heart of the car are those batteries, similar to the one in your phone. There are a lot of them on a big tray that runs along the bottom chassis of the car. The advances in battery life and characteristics over the years have made a car like the Tesla possible. The concept of an electric car could only succeed if it was a viable, usable alternative to the gasoline powered car. When range is a few miles, that may work for a Hollywood activist actor, but not for working schmoes. The Tesla can stretch to 300 miles on a charge, making it more than acceptable for most executives’ daily commute. It is not an inexpensive car largely due to those batteries which are its lifeblood. One insider had said that the Model S is really more of a $40,000-$50,000 car, but the batteries raise the price to its typical $80,000-$90,000 sticker price. The good news is that they are selling more iPhones and Teslas than ever. And with every one sold, you have to think that the battery is becoming better and less expensive. It does not hurt that one of Elon Musk’s next goals is to get into the battery making business. It is not surprising that other luxury car brands have taken notice of Tesla’s success and are rethinking their strategy in the market. Both Mercedes and Porsche, in fact, have unveiled their fully battery-powered concept cars at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The Mercedes is very attractive, with its sporting three-pointed star embedded in its grille (an electric grille?). The new Porsche concept, however, is pure, unadulterated sex on wheels. Called the Mission E, it definitely lives up to its name – it is on a mission to destroy any chances of Tesla stealing the electric sports car marketplace. It is just lovely, with lines draped in a silvery white, flowing with a sinewy grace from bow to stern. The headlights are beautifully worked into the nose of the car, with only a small grill along the bottom, presumably for HVAC, 6

brake cooling or battery cooling. Current Porsches with batteries onboard use cleverly-designed water-cooling systems to keep the batteries at the optimum temperature for performance, lifespan and safety. I suspect the new model will incorporate the same technology in some form. Of course, this is only a prototype. Then again, so were the Boxster and Panamera prototypes and this one looks at least as production-ready as those previous show cars did. I have to say that this Mission E prototype has left me kind of stunned. It is the absolute antithesis of everything I have ever loved about Porsches. I have always cherished the mechanical feel of the air-cooled 911 sports car experience, from the way the doors open and close, to the sound of the flat six behind the rear axle (where God told Ferry to put it). I love the smell of oil and gas, and the sore muscles from autocrossing a car with manual steering. Analog all the way, baby. But this new car just takes my breath away. What it gives up in gasoline and oil, it will make up for in brutal DC-powered acceleration. My daily-driver Cayenne S gets 15mpg on a good tank and I suspect this car will return at least a few days per charge.

The 911 sings a beautiful, mechanical cacophony on a back road, but I am sure that the whisper quiet interior (perhaps decked out with a Burmeister sound system) would be enjoyable for most of life’s journeys. I have decided that this car (or the production version whenever that should arrive) is something that I can truly lust after. And is not lust why you buy a Porsche in the first place? Probably more than anything is a small sigh of relief that the adaptation of this modern technology - technology which cannot be reasonably ignored even by a stalwart performance automobile brand like Porsche - does not mean the end of the marque as we know it. Quite the contrary. There is never going to be a Porsche-branded Prius competitor, just as there was never a Porsche minivan. Porsche engineers are using this new technology to chase new design goals with the new tools afforded to them in the form of batteries and DC power. And at the same time, they are clearly incorporating the passion and innovation that made the older models so great. Something tells me that Tech Tactics will be fun in upcoming years when we fully pull back the layers to this onion.

“Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won’t come again And don’t speak too soon For the wheel’s still in spin And there’s no tellin’ who That it’s namin’ For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin’”

Hitting Apexes

A

s this is the October P4Us we should be about ready to hold our next DE (October 17-18) at the really fun Lightning track and New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP). Not too long after that on October 30 – November 1 we will have our final event at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). Just as a reminder, in 2016 we will be back at Watkins Glen for our usual Advanced DE in mid-September. In an article or two ago, I wrote about the different phases of a turn and that there is an optimal line through every corner. For consistency, the driver will need a set of fixed reference points to mark the phases of the corner, so the line can be driven identically every lap.

Reference Points At most DE’s, we supply the critical reference points with nice bright orange cones. There is a school of thought that on day two of an event and particularly day three of a three day event, we should pull the cones. The point of this article is to get you to think about developing reference points, other than the orange cones. Upon approaching a corner, the driver needs a fixed point to use as a reference for starting the turn-in. Guessing each time or

By Tom Iervolino l Track Chair

“going by the feel” will guarantee that the driver will turn in too soon sometimes, and too late other times. Inconsistent and slower than perfect lap times (not that we are timing) will result. The first time you drive a new track you must determine the correct starting point for the turn-in and find a permanent visual landmark to use for reference. Next, is the apex point. This is the target point that the inside tire of the car should touch as it reaches the maximum inside point of the driving line. Again, without a fixed point to target, inconsistency and slower times will result. Last, is the exit point. This is the target point after the apex that the car tracks out to on the opposite side of the track and is completely pointed straight again, or is otherwise pointed properly for the next corner. In each case, the reference point should be a permanent land mark. A tire skid on the track is no good. Other skids later on could obscure

for unique features in the road itself if possible. Some tracks have permanent signs in the braking zones. You might start braking exactly at one of the markers, or a car length before or after. At the corner apex, most permanent road course tracks will have the white or red & white cement rumble strips. When you find the right apex point, note whether it is half way, three-quarters, or wherever, and aim for that spot each time. The corner exit reference point can be the toughest to find. Many tracks have exit markers just like the apex which can be used, but not all. You may have to search for other fixed landmarks off the track that the car exit path lines up with such as telephone poles, trees, or signs. What about a reference point for the start of braking? There is some debate about this. Some people suggest that there should not be a reference point for the start of braking. The argument is that the turn-in point is the focus, and the driver must learn to sense when to start the braking to achieve the proper speed at the turn-in point. It is assumed that some laps will be faster than others because traffic is involved, and with all the original one. Likewise, a particu- these variables, the focus must be lar rock, weed, or grass tuft on the placed on the turn-in point, not in side may be questionable if they are looking for the braking point which in danger of being driven over if a may be too soon for slower speeds. car goes off course. “In each case, the reference point should be a permanent landmark.”

PORSCHEFORUS OCTOBER 2015

“...one of the key attributes of skilled driving is consistency, and one of the keys to consistency is reference points.” Nevertheless, one of the key attributes of skilled driving is consistency, and one of the keys to consistency is reference points. In any high performance driving, a braking reference point is just as effective for marking the capabilities of the car’s performance (for braking) as is the turn-in point (for corner entry grip), and acceleration point (for corner exit grip). An example of where a braking reference point is a must, is a blind corner. A corner at the top of, or just below, the crest of a hill will not be visible to the driver during braking. The debate of whether there is or should be a reference point for braking is largely semantics. Physiologically, your mind and body needs some reference to know

when to start braking, and how to make that action consistent. For braking, the term “reference point” itself describes the purpose. It is a point of reference, and will not be so much a “target” as it is for the turn-in, apex, and exit points. If the driver is at maximum speed before the turn, he’s going to need to know when to start braking. If another lap is slower, he’ll know he can start braking a little later. Regardless of how it is used and whether you call it a “reference point” or not, having a point or reference for the maximum braking performance of the car for each turn avoids guessing. So, the next time you are on track, establish your reference points and see how they work for you or ask your Instructor or a

Chief, what they use. I remember asking Bill Gilbert what his turn in point was for Turn 1 at Watkins and he mentioned something about a square shape outlined on the track where the pavement was re-surfaced or seal coated. Opps!! Watkins is being repaved so we are going to need to find something else Bill. LOL. Thanks to Turn Fast for the material for this article.

Summer Concours at the Deutscher Club Sponsored By Town Porsche

fter a several year absence, NNJR returned to one of the finer locations in the area for concours events on July 13. The Deutscher Club of Clark has it all. Appealing and easy to reach location, great food, excellent staff and plenty of display area parking in a park like setting. The club is very supportive of the area car clubs hosting events for BMW, Mercedes and American Classics. The evening before our event they hosted the Northern New Jersey Section of the Mercedes Club. They also have much to offer in the realm of family accommodations as they have a play area for the children. The day started off picture perfect with sunny skies and low humidity. Considering the weather pattern in the days leading up to the

12

PORSCHEFORUS OCTOBER 2015

By Jeff McFadyen and Murray Kane l NNJR Concours Chairs event, this was an unexpected bonus. Registration opened at 10am with the efficient team of Nadine Sliwa, Margie McFadyen and Akemi Kane. Murray Kane and Stu French handled the staging duties. Everyone on the team being veteran event managers, allowed for a stress free start to the day. Early arrivals were treated to donuts and Deutscher Club fresh brewed coffee to help them get off on the right foot. When staging was complete we had over 30 cars ranging from Lake Underwood’s famous 1957 356 that was raced with much success by his father in the 1960’s to Michele and John Schrade’s 2015 981 Boxster. At 10:30 with staging complete, the judging teams fanned out to begin their inspections. We should note that while all this was going on, the kids were having a blast in the play area. Keep this in mind when planning to attend future events as the club always strives to hold events that are fun for kids of all ages. The judges had quite a task this day as it being midway through the season, even the novice group participants were extremely well prepared requiring a keen eye on the judge’s part. Fortunately this group of judges is experienced and knows where to look. This was truly a concours with tight

competition as many classes had scores separated by mere tenths of a point. We believe one of the factors contributing to this degree of preparation are the workshops we hold on concours prep early in the year. These events teach new and no so new members how to prepare for a show as well as how to care for their Porsche. It seems to have paid off for several of the newer members. Lunch time saw the Deutscher Club staff serving, hamburgers, hot dogs and of course bratwurst. Liquid refreshments included German beer and wine. Being a summer event, we had ice-cream and watermelon for desert. Hot pretzels were also on the desert menu. We noted these were a big hit with all ages. One of the reasons we could afford to have such a generous spread is Town Porsche of Englewod’s sponsorship of the 2015 concours season. Please make sure to thank them whenever they are present at one of our events. While the group was enjoying lunch, the judges completed their work allowing head scorer Jeff McFadyen with the aid of Ed Vazquez to finish his work. Talk about tight competition.

First, second and third place in more than half the judged classes was decided by tenths of a point. Now you understand what we meant by tight competition. Now let us get to the winners. P1 Class saw Jeff and Margie McFadyen in 1st place with their pristine 1957 Sahara Beige 357 Outlaw. P2 was won by a novice team that is having quite a year. Including a class win at the Zone 1 Concours. Ellen and Bruce Hays took the podium with their classic Yellow 1974 914. The next team known in the past more for their winning rally ways has been of late producing quite the winning concours record. Joann and Peter Schneider joined the winners circle in P3 with their well prepared 1994 white 968. P4 1st place winner Randy Partridge not only had a score a few tenths off perfection, but is also the proud owner of what has to be one of the finest examples of a red 1974 911 in the club. P5 1st place winner Fred Simonson is no stranger to the winner’s circle having already accomplished the feat of a perfect score earlier in the season. Fred again showed his skills at preparation with a score of 224.8 with OCTOBER 2015 PORSCHEFORUS

13

Concours Corner his stunning and much sought after 1989 Guards Red 911 Cabriolet. Steve Kroeger back on the circuit after missing the early part of the season with mechanical issues.took 1st in the hotly contested P6 class by one tenth of a point with his super clean silver 1997 911/993. Former NNJR Concours Chair extraordinaire Hank Menkes topped the competition in P7 with a score of 224.9 with his awesome Carmon Red 2006 911. One tenth off a perfect score. This class saw the top four entrants scores separated by 8 tenths. Imagine that 4th place had a score of 224.1. P8 is another hotly contested class and usually the largest with Boxsters and Caymans both vying for the win. Scores here were even tighter than P7 with the top five cars separated by six tenths of a point. When all was said and done the aforementioned 2015 white Boxster of Michele and John Schrade sat atop the class with a perfect score. This score also gave them “Best In Show.” P10 the NNJR Race Car Class saw Lake Underwood bring home the gold. The last group to the podium was the “People’s Choice” winners and in this group veteran concours competitor Jeff Ervin bested the bunch with his crowd pleasing silver 2000 Boxster. Jeff knows just how to outfit his car to best the completion in this category. We want to thank the Deutscher Club for being great hosts and the entire NNJR staff for a great job helping to ensure a pleasant and enjoyable event for all. We had many members compliment the facility and thank us for a great event. This is not possible without the contributions of our dedicated judges, registrars, timers and runners. We greatly appreciate all your efforts on behalf of the NNJR concours program.

The New Hope Car Show August 9, 2015

hat a day, what an event. Imagine 250 cars of every marque. Some so rare you may never have seen one before. Oh and let us not forget DJ music, food vendors and assorted other vendors hawking everything from insurance to cars. This year’s show celebrated the convertible and there were some truly exquisite examples on the field covering the years from the beginning of automobile history to the year 2000. Entrants that brought convertibles were given a special ribbon to commemorate their participation. This included several in the Porsche group. This event is not an NNJR concours. We participate and judge

14

the Porsche Division at the invitation of the New Hope organization. We have won their respect by being the most organized and efficient of the groups. After the show New Hope head judge, Joe Moore made a point of thanking us for making his job so much easier. Sunday is foreign car day as Saturday is reserved for the American cars. Again as at the Deutscher club we were fortunate to have a great weather day. With over 40 Porsches on the field, we were the largest group. No other marque had half as many cars. With four judging teams each had ten or more cars. Quite a work load and making for a tight schedule. Show cars to the year 2000 qualify for a New Hope Trophy. To make for a level playing field for those competing for the 2015 NNJR Town Porsche Championship Series, we allowed newer Porsche’s to enter and we judged them for season points. It was a busy morning for us with all we have to do despite the New Hope organization being the registrars. We use our NNJR score sheets so as each entrant is staged they have to be assigned a number and given a score sheet. We were so busy with this that we missed head judge Joe Moore’s meeting. Needless to say this was noted and did not please him. But as noted earlier, he was so pleased with our group all was forgiven. Once we had finished distributing the score sheets, NNJR head judge Murray Kane called the Porsche judges to a meeting on the field and reviewed judging protocols for the event. New Hope judging was scheduled to start at 11am so the judges did have a little time to walk the field and see where the cars in there group were parked. As you can imagine we were not the only ones busy during this time as the field was a beehive of activity with entrants doing their last minute preps. Once judging started it was all hands on deck. Judges, timers, runners and scorers all got down to work. We have a little more than two hours to gets

done as we need to have the final results to the New Hope team in time for them to prepare the 2pm Parade of Champions. While New Hope organizes and runs the Parade that is for the 1st place class winners, NNJR awards the 2nd and 3rd place ribbons. We do this at the entrant’s car with a small staff. This year head judge Murray Kane did the honors assisted by co-chair Jeff McFadyen, ribbon bearer Akemi Kane and photographer, seven year old Jaiden Kane. The pictures came out perfect. If helps to have a dad that is a professional photographer; started him early. With the cut off of the year 2000 we had eight classes as opposed to the NNJR regular concours classing of ten. The first winner in the Porsche group was Ray Paterek in P1 with his perfectly self-restored and stunning maroon 1951 356. As Mel Brook famously said in History of the World, Part 1 “It’s good to be king” A real crowd pleaser and a restoration to be proud of. P2 winner Len Coloccia and Linda Pellitteri are no strangers to the winners circle having earlier in the year taken 1st place at the Zone 1 Concours amongst many of their numerous other awards with their astonishingly well preserved red 914 1.8. Phil Stern continued his domination of the P3 class this season bringing his A game for top honors in his immaculately

prepared Granite Green 1987 928 Phil is consistently at the top of his class. Bob McCaskey in P4 beat out five other competitors for the win. Bob is a past New Hope winner and it was quite obvious looking at his elegant red 1969 911 Targa. P5 was taken by Bill Harris with his rare and beautiful red 1986 930. We are sure this was a rewarding day for Bill having been close to the top before and just missing. This class at New Hope has a history of close competition and tight scores making his win ever more rewardable. Bill informed us that his wife had arrived just minutes before he was informed of his win making the moment ever more sweet. Akemi Kane a top competitor in the regions concours competitions, NNJR and others took top honors in P6 with her high gloss black 911 Turbo. Akemi has been having a super season with big wins on the regional, zone and national level. Boxster class P8 belonged to Don Lipira for the second year in a row at New Hope. Don’s super clean Artic Silver 1999 Boxster was well prepared and close to perfection. We expect we will be seeing Don at the top again in the future. Lastly we have P10 with a name familiar to us all. Lake Underwood taking home the gold in his race prepped blue 1957 356 Speedster with his second top finish in as many competitions. So count them, 8 classes and 7 NNJR top finishes. What make this feat quite outstanding

This DIY workshop will allow you the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and work on improving the appearance of your own Porsche with the guidance and tutelage of the concours committee experts. Whether it is a full polish and shine to restore your paints luster or just a difficult issue with cleaning stubborn track debris off your bumper; you do the work, we will have someone there to assist and guide you through the process. Exterior, interior, storage or engine bay no problem. Do not forget to bring your favorite cleaning and touch up supplies. We will have some of our own magic elixirs to share and you can compare and contrast as you work on your car. It is a great opportunity for owners of track and autocross cars, as well as concours contenders, to address that nagging appearance issue. The workshop will take place indoors and there is plenty of space if you wish to actively work on your car during the event. We will also have a special guest. Danny Gernier of Auto Chem System will demonstrate the use of their waterless wash and wax. In addition he will speak to us on several of Auto Chem’s new and innovative car care products. Please contact [email protected] to identify what you would like to address, and make a reservation. Join us as our hosts Jose, Patty and Max DeLaCruz welcome us to their facility. The Glen, Driver Education & Where It All Started

PORSCHEFORUS OCTOBER 2015

“The Glen, where it all started, at a DE event, where we recognized and thanked the one man who started it all...”

W

e recently had our annual pilgrimage to Watkins Glen, one of our favorite Driver Education (“DE”) venues. The Glen is an outstanding facility with a storied motorsports history. Many of the world’s great drivers have been there including those from Formula 1, Indy Car, NASCAR, IMSA and yes, NNJR! This year the event was a little different. Rather than running the full 3.5 mile course with the famous “Boot”, we were compelled to run what is known as the “NASCAR course” because the “Boot” was being repaved. Now the “Boot” I am referring to is not an infamous NJ mobster; instead it is part of the track which is configured in the shape of a boot, complete with sections known as the “Laces”, the “Toe” and the “Sole”. Of course, for the many drivers who have been coming to The Glen for years, this presented a new set of challenges and made for some interesting and exciting moments in the Outer Loop and when entering the notorious Turn 10 (the fast left hander before pit- in) as we learned that Turn 10 is even faster than we previously thought. Running this new NASCAR course also helped me with my wife Lisa who thinks we are a bunch of fools because “you go to the same places every year, driving around in circles…. how much more could there be to learn? If you have not figured it out in 20 years, what are you going to learn this weekend?” I have repeatedly tried to explain to Lisa that: (1) we do not drive around in circles (perhaps she skipped geometry); (2) we continue to learn and improve as drivers every time we go to the track, even if it is by mere tenths of a second since a mere second, just a tick on the watch, is about 132 feet on the track when averaging 90 mph; and (3) even if we are not getting better or faster, our extremely positive self-images enable us to tell each other how much faster we are getting!

This year’s event at The Glen was particularly special. We had three days of outstanding weather, maybe the best in my 20 plus years at The Glen. Tom Iervolino did an outstanding job in organizing and implementing the event with the cooperation of everyone in tech and the core of talented instructors. Chief Instructors Knute Hancock and Drew Karpinski maintained order on the track. Bill Gilbert conducted his usual highly informative presentation in the classroom; this event the topic being “Weight Transfer”…no, not the kind from too many burgers and beers, rather how your driving inputs affect the car’s traction and handling. President Drew Karpinski presented Tom and all participants with the traditional souvenir shirt marking the winding down of Tom’s two-year stint as Track Chair. While we have always had super people running our track program, Tom has certainly done as outstanding a job as has ever been done! Kudos to Tom! On Friday night, Frank Bennett, his son Frankie, Anthony Castronovo, his brother Vinny, and Anthony Vasaturo, the fun-loving pizza-making guys affectionately known as Scungilli Racing, put on the 5th Annual Scungilli Fest at their rig in their paddock. They provided delicious food to guests who were asked to make a donation to Bright Pink in the fight against breast cancer. All proceeds went to charity and Scungilli Racing raised over $4,500 this year (and more than $12,000 over the 5 years!). Frank Bennett reminded all of us of our many blessings, including how fortunate we are to participate in this great sport and how we make each other better people by supporting each other. Our friends from Paul Miller Porsche were kind enough to bring a fleet of new cars that could be viewed and test driven including a 911 Carrera GTS, Cayenne GTS, Macan and 911 Targa. Paul Miller also sponsored our tremendous Saturday night barbecue prepared by the renowned Dinosaur Bar-B-Que from Syracuse, NY. OCTOBER 2015 PORSCHEFORUS

“Someone had to be the first.” The wings, ribs and pulled pork were excellent, and the beer cold! Fun was had by all. The Glen undeniably holds a special place in our DE hearts since it is the birthplace of American road racing dating back to 1948 and a fantastic track that is home to NNJR’s premier DE event every year. One of The GLEN’s mottos is “WHERE IT STARTED, WHERE IT’S AT!” It was only fitting that we were at The Glen, where it all started, at a DE event, where we recognized and thanked the one man who started it all... Someone had to be first. Someone had to start this DE thing! The guy with the vision who called Lime Rock in 1971 to arrange to rent the track so a group of Porsche enthusiasts could drive their cars as fast as their skills would permit. The one man who is responsible for starting PCA Driver Education. For those of you who know a little bit about the history of PCA DE, you know I am talking about Dennis Thovson. Yes… our very own Dennis Thovson started it all! Dennis has served the PCA and NNJR for more than 50 years. He and his lovely wife Marlys have made NNJR and PCA their extended family, treating all that come and go through the Club like family. Dennis’ (and Marlys’) list of service to the Club is almost limitless:

• President of PCA National • President of the NJNJR Club (and Marlys as NNJR Secretary for over 40 years!) • A Chief Instructor for the Region forever. • A true leader and tireless organizer. • Polite, fair, always considerate of others and incredibly humble. • A skilled, passionate and courteous driver on track. • A consummate instructor when in the right seat. • A true gentleman. A total class act. 30

PORSCHEFORUS OCTOBER 2015

Dennis embodies everything good about the Porsche Club! For anyone who enjoys track events, even to the slightest degree, you owe Dennis Thovson a great debt of gratitude. We paid special tribute to Dennis, our forever Chief Instructor, because he advised us that this Glen event would be his last event where he would be driving the red #18 RS America. While he still drives that car like others before it with great skill and passion, Dennis made the decision to hang up his driving shoes. I am sure it was not an easy decision, but one we must learn to respect. I know I speak for many in the Club, and anyone who enjoys driving a Porsche at the track when I say how much we appreciate what Dennis has done for the PCA, NNJR, and most importantly, for those of us with the same passion for driving our cars in the DE program. We might not be on track but for his vision. Dennis, please know that the fire you lit will continue to burn through us all!! While we will miss you on the track, we hope you continue to share your considerable talents as an instructor with us. With the full support of the instructor corps, Drew Karpinski announced at Sunday’s Driver’s meeting that the #18 will be forever retired from NNJR DE events in tribute to Dennis - future Track Registrars and Track Chairs take notice! In addition, the Track Program has a special memento being prepared for Dennis to be presented to him at a later date. And for those of you who were not at The Glen, please thank Dennis next time you see him. I know that there are many drivers out there who are better, faster and safer because of the “Safe, Serious, Fun“ DE events Dennis started. Dennis….we admire, respect and love you for who you are and what you have done for so many of us and so many others. I am so very proud to be your friend. Al Tafro #555
