A Brief History of Northborough

The history of the Town of Northborough is a rich tapestry that reflects events, political ideas, personal lives and architecture set against the broader history of the United States. From our first settler, John Brigham in 1672, who built his saw mill near where Whitney Street crosses over Howard Brook, to our present times, there are reminders of those who walked the paths, tilled the land, built grist mills, attended schools and built churches; their footsteps are beneath yours. We were part of the Marlborough Plantation in 1660, which became the North Precinct of Westborough in 1744 and a separate Town in 1766. We have many industrious, intelligent forefathers to thank. The names of Rice, Davis, Brigham, Ball, Bartlett, Fay, Carruth, Goodenew, Eager, Gamwell, Livermore, Holloway were some of the original 37 families living here in 1744. They built their meeting house on Church Street near where the Unitarian Church is today. They hired Rev. John Martyn to attend to their early spiritual needs. Town Ministers who followed were Rev. Peter Whitney and Rev Joseph Allen. Both their houses are still standing (1780 and 1817 respectively) as a tribute to their dedication to their flock and the Town of Northborough. All three early ministers kept town records and wrote histories that are valuable resources today.

As in most New England towns, agriculture was predominant but by the end of the 17th century, industry appeared. Houses sprang up, woolen and cotton mills were operated on Hudson Peter Whitney Parsonage - 1898 Street and several button and comb factories dotted the Assabet River banks. Blacksmithing, ironworks, rifle and camera factories employed many townspeople. The Northborough National Bank and the Gale Library were established, and with the arrival of the Agricultural Railroad in 1855, the economy flourished. Northborough with its country charm became tourist destination. Over the last 300+ years, since John Brigham settled in the area, we have survived wars, depressions, hurricanes, tornadoes and an influenza epidemic and from those initial 37 families, we have grown to a population of 14,523. Since our 200th Celebration, the town has seen many changes. With the completion of Interstate 290 in the early 1970’s it allowed Northborough to become a bedroom community with easy access to Worcester and Boston. Northborough National Bank Several industrial areas were set aside near the highway where large corporations such as Digital Equipment, Federal Express, Saint-Gobain/Norton, National Grid and A.Duie Pyle set up their businesses.

Town growth include commercial businesses along Main Street and Route 20 including the new Northborough Crossing Development, Times Square shops and new restaurants. Housing developments increased population as several over 55 communities were built along with the Avalon complex and new single family developments. As the community grew new community oriented construction was needed. This includes the expansions of AlDaniel Wesson gonquin High School and the Library, the building of the Senior Center and the start of renovations to the Lincoln Street School. While there have been many changes in the Town of Northborough, the sense of community and acceptance has not been lost as we continue to move forward.
