During its six-day run this past February, over 74,000 trade visitors attended the 54th annual show. Traditionally, European model railroad manufacturers (and an increasing number of American firms) unveil their new products for the coming year at this show. Highlights from 2003 include a limited-run Hospital (complete with rescue helicopter

Built during the 1920s and 30s when theater owners spared no expense to make their buildings stand out, these structures featured elaborate facades with brightly painted panels, frescos, statues and other architectural ornaments. At night, bright marquees, flashy chase lights, moving neon starbursts and a huge sign brought the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to your hometown. The Highest Point in Town In many small towns, the tall city water tower is the first thing visitors see. Proudly displaying the village’s name, the tower tells everybody where they are—a few even have names on the roof to aid airplane pilots. Some towns

have made their towers a point of civic pride by including them in their coat of arms or logo. Even country music star Joe Diffie sang the story of lovestruck teenagers, who proclaimed their everlasting devotion by painting their names on the town tower in “John Deere” green. So what makes the water tower such a big part of our culture? They’re everywhere. That’s why every town on your layout should have one too. The new Cornerstone Series® Built-up HO Scale City Water Tower makes adding

How do they Work? The city water tower acts as a peak-demand reserve tank. Town water pumps, housed in a nearby structure, pump water at a fixed rate. During peak demand, such as the morning when most people shower, water flowing by gravity from the tank supplements what the pumps can supply. The pumps refill the tower during periods of low demand. Each tank, standing as high as 180 feet, holds about a day’s supply of water. Water towers like the new Built-up model were constructed beginning in the 1920s, when plate steel became economical to produce, and continued into the 1960s.

Water Towers add Realism to your Layout On your model railroad, place the tower on the highest point in your town. They’re also found in commercial areas, residential neighborhoods or along the tracks. Paper mills, steel mills, colleges, railroad shop facilities and large users have their own private towers too.

The Built-up Water Tower is loaded with detail including fine metal stabilizing rods on the legs and a concrete foundation. For added authenticity, you can use the supplied decals to add your town name. Towers are available in two of the most widely used colors— black and silver. Weathering is easy; just add a little dark gray chalk on the roof and walkway, a light coating of dust and a few small rust streaks on metal seams and on the concrete footings. As a final touch, add some graffiti just above the walkway such as “Class of...” or initials with decals or paint. ■

Tall, Gray and Handsome Stand along the tracks in North America’s breadbasket and look toward the nearest town. Chances are you’ll see a grain elevator peeking above the horizon. Up through the 1930s, it would have been a wooden elevator; after the 1950s, you would likely see huge concrete “prairie skyscrapers.” Between the 1930s and 1950s, corrugated-metal elevators sprang up in many granger towns. Durable and fire resistant, corrugated metal siding was all the rage; new elevators and scores of older ones were sheathed with it. During this period of growth, the new elevators were usually built to supplement existing facilities. The Cornerstone Series Valley Growers Association is based on these metal marvels.
