Race event gets off to good start to strap in once again when the call for gentlemen to start their engines rang out over the PA His racing days may be behind system. Though not every race car him, but Tom Smith was ready BY CLIFF SMELLEY Regional News/Sports Editor

driver—past and present— climbed inside their vehicles to start their engines, the noise was still deafening and surely caused the heart rates of those close to the sport to quicken. “I was ready to go out and run a couple of laps, if you want to know the truth, when they fired those motors up,” Smith said. Approximately 70 race cars and many more people were present at an April 6 racers’ reunion hosted by Smith Brothers Body Shop just north of Starke. It was a chance for drivers who competed on tracks from the central part of Florida to Brunswick, Ga., or Waycross, Ga., to gather and reminisce. Smith said he got the chance to chat with people he hadn’t seen in 35 to 40 years. Starke resident Jack Frazier, a former racer himself, said it didn’t take him long to renew past acquaintances. “I just got here, and I’ve already seen five people I haven’t seen in 20 years,” Frazier said. Frazier began racing in the 1960s, driving on tracks in Lake City, Jacksonville, Daytona, Brunswick and Waycross, as well as at Talladega, Ala., and once at Charlotte, N.C. “I enjoyed them all,” Frazier said. “Dirt was the main thing. I loved dirt tracks.”

Frazier said he was part of a group of drivers who looked forward to driving on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, “and hope somebody rained out so we could run on Sunday.” Smith, like Frazier, experienced a flood of memories, admitting, “I’d like to jump back

in (a car) and run about a 100lap feature right now.” For Smith, it was an overwhelming turnout of people who not only looked at race cars and itched to get back behind the wheel, but admired a display of classic cars and the auto museum on site at Smith Brothers Body

Shop. The event, organized by Smith, his brother, Jerry, and Charlie Poindexter, is planned as an annual event. “This was a starter,” Smith said. “Now, we’re going to do it a bunch of times, I hope, for as long as I’m alive.”

8 Bradford, Keystone, Union lifters make it to state BY CLIFF SMELLEY Regional News/Sports Editor

Eight boys’ weightlifters from Bradford, Keystone Heights and Union County high schools earned the right to advance to the state finals, with three of those lifters winning their respective weight classes at the April 6 District 4-1A state qualifying meet at Baker County High School. Bradford’s Rashad Lane won the District 4 championship in the 139 class, while teammate Phillip James won the 199 class. Lane had a bench press of 270 and a clean and jerk of 180 to finish with a 450 total—15 pounds better than Devyn Gajewskey of Menendez. James had a bench press of 345 and a clean and jerk of 280 to finish with a 625 total, which was 35 pounds better than Valdez Jackson of Baker County. Union’s Dustin Griffis won the 238 class with a bench press of 365 and a clean and jerk of 255. His 620 total topped the 590 total compiled by Chris Waites of Fort White. Those three lifters earned their state bids by virtue of their firstplace finishes, but four other lifters from Bradford, Keystone and Union will join them after district totals from throughout the state were compared to determine the remaining state qualifiers. Bradford’s Markel Parks will advance after finishing as District 4 runner-up in the heavyweight class with a 660 total (365 bench, 295 clean and jerk), while Union’s Kevin Thornton will advance after his third-place finish in the 199 class. Thornton had a 550 total (275, 275). Keystone will send three to state: Steven Beverly, John Brown and Chase Musselman. Musselman was the district runner-up in the 119 class with a 530 total (265, 265). Brown was third in the 154 class with a 515 total (255, 260), while Beverly was fourth in the 129 class with a 370 total (195, 175). Though not earning state berths, Keystone’s Micah Rabb and Lane Blanton earned

second- and third-place finishes, respectively, at the District 4 meet. Rabb had a 250 total (135 bench, 115 clean and jerk) in the 119 class, while Blanton had a 425 total (215, 210) in the 139 class. Baker County, which won four classes, claimed the team district championship with 58 points. Matanzas was second with 36 points, followed by Keystone with 26 points. Bradford and Union placed fifth and seventh, respectively, with 20 and 11 points. The Florida High School Athletic Association Finals will be held April 19-20 in Kissimmee.

Colaw, McCollum earn top honors from Sun in girls’ soccer Four Keystone Heights High School players earned first-team honors as part of the Gainesville Sun’s small-school, all-area soccer team, with junior forward Madison Colaw also being named as the player of the year.
