Bodycote Financial Results. Just this past Friday we had a brief summary of commercial heat treater Bodycote's latest financial results. It is our belief that this summary of the company's profit margins also makes for interesting reading.

Bodycote also continues to expand in high-margin specialist technologies, which now contribute almost a quarter of group revenue - up from 14 per cent in 2007 - and, tellingly, account for 38 per cent of operating profit. The group is the sole supplier of popular services such as HIP product fabrication, which management describes as "the mother of all pressure cookers", giving it strong pricing power. Demand is so hot for these services, says Mr. Harris, that they haven't been affected by plummeting oil prices. The oil and gas sector represents about a tenth of Bodycote's business, but a third of that is served by specialist technologies. Broker Credit Suisse expects adjusted pre-tax profit of £114m for the year ahead, giving EPS of 44.6p (from 43.8p in 2013). March 2/2015

"Things are turning out exactly the way we said they would," says Bodycote (BOY) chief executive Stephen Harris. Since he embarked on a "tidying up" operation in 2009, margins at the supplier of heat treatment, metal joining, hot isostatic pressing and coating services have steadily risen. Most recently, management has been increasing efficiency in Bodycote's European automotive and general industrial unit by closing down underperforming plants. Such measures drove divisional margins up 90 basis points to 15.6 per cent. Moreover, Bodycote's margin model, whereby each customer is analyzed and prices set accordingly, boosted the group's core heattreatment business and helped widen group margins by 90 basis points to 18.2 per cent.

HTSU Press Release. Now to this story we have a lot of background. Dibalog based in Heidelberg, Germany offers a very cool and very effective "peak demand" system for reducing electrical costs. It has been very successful in Europe and with our in depth knowledge of the technology we can say that it works and works well depending upon peak demand charges. With HTSU based in Greenville, SC acquiring the US division of the company we believe that the system will become far better known in North America. February 27/2015 "GREENVILLE, S.C. – Heat Treating Services Unlimited Inc., a global field services and accredited testing and calibration laboratory specializing in the thermal processing industry, announced today the acquisition of dibalog USA Inc., an energy optimization company. The investment in dibalog USA bolsters HTSU’s comprehensive portfolio of maintenance, calibration, repair and testing services in North America. Dibalog will operate as a new division of HTSU known as Dyno Controls. “Dibalog underscores our commitment to adding significant expertise to continue to bring cost savings solutions to our clients,” said HTSU President Kyle Favors. “At Dyno Controls, our energy products and software tools calculate and maintain uniform energy loads and monitor performance. By optimizing the energy used within the facility, we are considerably reducing costs for our clients.” Energy demand charges can be a significant part of a business’ utility bill. Dyno Controls keeps companies from breaking that threshold, saving them thousands of dollars each month in energy costs. Since 2008, HTSU had been a sales/service partner to dibalog GmbH in Heidelberg, Germany. “Companies throughout North America will benefit greatly from the world-class team at Dyno Controls,” said Gunther Braus, president and CEO of dibalog GmbH. “With their experience and proven track record, they are providing end-to-end thermal processing management services.” New Technical Sales Representative Adam Richey will lead Dyno Controls. A former small business owner with experience within multiple industries, Richey understands the value of savings and optimizing all aspects of a company. “HTSU is well positioned in the thermal processing industry, and Kyle Favors and his management team have done an excellent job in advancing the company’s offering and market position,” Richey said. “At Dyno Controls, I look forward to creating more value to our customers.” About Heat Treating Services Unlimited (HTSU) Heat Treating Services Unlimited Inc. provides pyrometry, refractory, burner tuning and energy management services. hand stood at 35.7 million pounds at the end of December. The special dividend of 20 pence per share is double the special payout in 2, 013. The company also announced a final dividend of 9.8 pence per share, up from 9.1 pence a year earlier. Bodycote provides services to improve the properties of metals through heat treatment, metal joining and hot isostatic pressing. The company reported a pretax profit of 103.7 million pounds for 2014, compared with 98.4 million pounds a year earlier. Revenue fell 1.7 percent to 609.1 million pounds on a reported basis but was up 4 percent at constant exchange rates.

For most European suppliers to the industry this is a "must do" event as they are conspicuous by their absence if they are not there while at the same time few North American and Asian industry suppliers exhibit at the show. This is a very European show and unless you have a presence in Europe to sell your products don’t bother exhibiting. As far as attending goes it is a fascinating show with the latest heat treating technology in the world and there is the added bonus that Düsseldorf is a very nice city. February 26/2015

ThermProcess/Is it Worth It? The world's largest heat treat exhibition ThermProcess is scheduled for June 16 to the 20th 2015 in Düsseldorf, Germany. This event is held every 4 years, always in Düsseldorf and actually consists of four metallurgy trade fairs GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST all of which have to do with the processing of metals. The size is truly shocking with over 2,000 exhibitors spread out over 12 halls but the really impressive feature is the size, and complexity of the various booths. We have been told that some of the booths cost in the hundreds of thousands of euro and with a number of exhibits being the size of a medium sized American house we have no reason to doubt it. To give you an idea we have these photos from the 2011 show including the Seco Warwick booth exhibiting a vacuum furnace which ended up at commercial heat treater in Wisconsin, USA of all places. The show is expensive to attend and with hotels in the area tripling the price of rooms during the exhibition it is not a cheap show to attend. So is it worth it?

We have mentioned Texas Heat Treating a couple of times over the past 2 or 3 years mainly because of the enormous investment in their Fort Worth location. The press release and photo below shows how the location looks today. "Continuing in it’s expansion to meet growing demand, Texas Heat Treating – Ft Worth has installed and commissioned a 7th Surface Combustion “Super 36″ Integral Quench Furnace. The furnace, rated for 6,000 pound loads, is mated with an additional (8th) Tempering furnace, parts washer, endothermic gas generation, and a second material charge car that services the entire line of “IQ” heat treating equipment. The equipment is used primarily for Carburizing and atmosphere controlled Hardening. Texas Heat Treating President Buster Crossley states: “This new furnace capacity obviously helps in providing customers with the necessary throughput to service their markets. We also see improvements in quality and energy efficiency, and this also benefits our customers.” In addition to the Integral Quench Furnace line, the Ft. Worth plant houses a Pit Furnace Department, Nitride Department and two Vacuum Furnaces. Straightening and Cleaning Departments complement these heat treating processes. A Metallurgical and Mechanical testing laboratory provides timely inspection service".

Out in Centreville, Iowa foundry Jef-Scot Metal Industries has decided no more sending out work to be heat treated. The company recently announced that instead of sending their work to Coffeyville, Kansas for heat treating they are going to bring it in house which sounds very reasonable. What you see in the background of this photo is a brand new million dollar Ajax Tocco Induction hardening system with two power supplies, robotic handling, automated loading and unloading, datalogging-basically all the bells and whistles all encompassed in a single spindle scanner system designed to run 24/7. This photo was taken February 18 and it shows the system just a few days away from entering full production. In the foreground we have from the left Surjit and Raman Bawa of Metex and Jordan Montgomery of WG Montgomery Ltd. February 19/2015

Canadian Winter 2015. While this has absolutely nothing to do with heat treating we know our readers in places such as Mexico, India and Thailand will get a kick out of this photo. This was taken just yesterday a few hundred feet from the offices of WG Montgomery Ltd., located just outside of Toronto, Canada and shows the ice flows that have been building up in Lake Ontario. Normally this would all be water but with record breaking temperatures of -30C (roughly -20F) the ice flows build up quickly-believe it or not but these "ice hills" are over 10' high but will be gone within a month. The city of Toronto can be seen off in the background. February 19/2015

FPM Heat Treating/Nadcap. Commercial heat treater FPM in the US Midwest has always been one of the larger commercial heat treaters in North America and one with a concentration on large volume heat treating. However there is another side to FPM that of aerospace heat treating as you can see. February 18/2015 "FPM HEAT TREATING Receives Nadcap Accreditation for Heat Treating. Nadcap recognizes FPM HEAT TREATING for its commitment to continual improvement in aerospace quality. FPM Heat Treating in Elk Grove Village, IL announces that it has received an additional Nadcap Scope of Accreditation for Carburizing, Carbonitriding, and Hardening & Tempering. We will move to Europe and Germany in particular to start off with. Hanomag which is one of the three largest commercial heat treaters in Germany has now finished their plant expansion at their location in Hannover, Germany. This location also has a new Managing Director, Dr. Winfried Gräfen who is a well known expert in the German HT industry. The good doctor was formerly R & D Director at Ipsen, is currently one of the managing directors at AWT and is also MD of another of Hanomag’s plants in Gommern, Germany. Recently we mentioned that Bodycote is opening their sixth location in Poland this one in Siechnice near Wroclaw-we are hearing that due to a couple of issues the plant is behind schedule a couple of months or so which would not be surprising with a “greenfield” site. In the UK commercial heat treater Metaltech is investing £50,000 into new equipment to allow them to target the offshore wind and marine markets for future work. The company has 24 employees and will be making the investment in their Consett

Monday Morning Briefing. We’ll have a look in the US to start off where we read that BTU International in Mass., a manufacturer of heat treating furnaces has a new owner by the name of Amtech Systems Inc., who is based in Arizona. We don’t think of BTU as a “real” heat treat furnace company as they concentrate on industries such as electronics however from time to time we do see one of their continuous furnaces at a powdered metal company or a firm doing brazing-looks like they build nice stuff. Auto parts supplier ZF Industries in Greys Court, SC is in the process of installing their third Ipsen pusher furnace. This location has been growing like crazy the past few years and with their vacuum carburizing furnaces and pusher capability this is becoming one of the larger captive heat treaters in the US. Speaking of Ipsen this picture must bring joy to the heart of every Ipsen employee out there-a line of partly completed Titan vacuum furnaces at the companies location in Rockford, IL. We say every Ipsen employee however I am sure that Thorsten Kruger, CEO of the Ipsen Group sees it differently-one heck of a lot of money tied up in inventory.

facility. We are certainly impressed that the company is investing in more equipment but with all due respect £50,000 quid doesn’t go very far with heat treat equipment.

Wisconsin Oven recently announced the shipment of two (2) electrically heated walk-in batch ovens that will be used for baking tool castings and curing powder coatings. The two (2) powder coating batch ovens were purchased to replace the customer’s older batch ovens that were failing due to age. Due to the limited height of doorways and a freight elevator in the customer’s 150 plus year old mill building, the ovens were built with a horizontal split line. This split line allowed the ovens to be completely manufactured, tested and burnt out prior to shipment at Wisconsin Oven which resulted in a quick install once received at the customer’s site. Martin Beaton/He's Back. Years ago we met a fellow by the name of Martin Beaton who at the time was a young metallurgist at FAG Bearings (now Schaeffer and one of the largest bearing companies in the world) in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Martin rose through the ranks quickly, and eventually ended up as a Regional Manger for commercial heat treater Bodycote covering the Great Lakes region which encompassed probably a dozen different plants in the US and Canada. The bloodletting of 2009 meant a lot of really good people at Bodycote were let go and unfortunately Martin was one of them. Fast forward to today and we just learned that Martin is now one of the top people at Swedish steel company Bohler Uddeholm and is based at the Mississauga, Ontario, Canada facility (which we will add is one of the most impressive captive/commercial heat treat operations we have seen in the world, we love the tennis courts-true story by the way). We have a high opinion of Martin but the real reason we mention him today is that for some reason we receive more inquiries about where he is than any other individual in the industry. A welcome addition to the industry again in our opinion. February 13/2015

Southwest and South Central Activity Press Release. From Marty Benegalia of Southern Thermal Systems, Inc., in Texas we have these very interesting comments about how the dramatic drop in oil pricing is effecting heat treating in the heart of oil country-the southern US. Marty can be found at www.southernthermalsystems.com 817.326.5125. February 11/2015 "As we enter the second month and midway through the first quarter of the New Year we are certainly witnessing a roller coaster ride in the stock market and oil prices. The oil and gas activity has certainly slowed down and has resulted in layoffs announced by large oil and gas equipment manufacturers. Schlumberger announced a workforce reduction around 9,000 and Weatherford announced 5,000 in workforce reduction worldwide. This equated to about 10% of their worldwide workforce by my estimate. Today, Halliburton announced a 6-8% reduction in their worldwide workforce. Many of these energy driven companies have announced a reduction of capital investments – as much as 50% to 70%. As seeing the glass as partly full, these announcements were for a “reduction” of capital expansion investment, not the complete elimination of them. This sector has experienced moderate expansion in capital expenditures directly into their heat treating facilities in the last couple of years. Many large oil and gas equipment manufacturers (Schlumberger, Hughes, Dresser, Weatherford, Halliburton for example) have significant heat treating facilities. Large amounts of the heat treating processes are done in large, integral quench batch furnaces and with carburizing being an important process. Vacuum Furnace technology is also present in oil and gas equipment manufacturers in both production processes as well as Research and Development facilities. The capital investments in heat treating equipment will likely be negatively impacted by the volatile oil prices and I would expect this to be felt mostly in the Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana areas of our region. Lower gasoline and oil prices will certainly help other sectors and perhaps a big part of the United States will not feel much impact at all from the “oil slump”. In this region it has resulted in layoffs as mentioned and also in smaller volume of orders or

in a quench tank and 5 employees suffered injuries from smoke inhalation while trying to extinguish the fire before it could spread and while waiting for the fire department. This incident is another that shows how heat treating can be a dangerous business. Bodycote has put an enormous amount of time, effort and expense over the past number of years into safety issues and is at the forefront when it comes to implementing all required safety codes; in spite of this accidents can still happen in this industry. We understand that the workers involved should be considered heroes for the effort they put into extinguishing the blaze. This facility is one of the largest and oldest facilities Bodycote has in the country. February 12/2015

outright order cancellations. The oil and gas equipment suppliers provide their goods to production sites worldwide, so the upside is that wherever there is drilling activity, these goods will still be in some demand.

We do enjoy filling up our gas tanks with cheaper gas prices, but that does come at the expense of some customers having had cutbacks in production and personnel. The area has been through numerous energy market swings and as reported previously, this area has diversified greatly since the mid 1980’s to weather the storm as good as possible. Activity so far this year has been good and the business mood has been much more optimistic than expected due to our oil/gas focus. We are witnessing a few plant expansions and promised equipment additions as well as new process developments. Often times we’ve seen that in the challenging times we are rewarded with better efficiencies, productivity and lessons learned. "

We can see that energy swings can benefit other industries such as Airlines and Transportation companies. The money saved there could be passed on to the consumers and potentially benefit the heat treating equipment manufacturers as these companies may have extra capital to invest into previously “shelved” projects. Aerospace and Power generation markets are a bit more active and these business sectors utilize box furnaces, vacuum furnaces, various coatings and welding technologies – perhaps new opportunities will be generated for the suppliers of these types of equipment.

notes, “We are delighted to be a part of the MRO Americas event for the first time. The venue is ideal for spreading our message of quality, delivery and value to those in the aerospace community, and for visiting with many of the long time customers we service in the sector. We also welcome the opportunity to introduce our organization to many for the first time.”

Flender Corp/Elgin, IL. Going back a number of months we had a story about a gear facility in Elgin, IL closing down and putting all of the equipment on the auction block. Included in the equipment were two absolutely top notch pit carburizing systems manufactured by well known furnace builder Aichelin based in Austria which had to have been a multi-million dollar investment. We speculated at the time that the equipment would be very difficult to sell because of the size and also the fact that furnaces of this type have a very limited market, that market being limited to well-who else but manufacturers of large windmill gears. And guess what? Manufacturers of large windmill gears in North America are not selling many windmill gears. So bottom line is that the equipment is still available and is now listed as “very well priced" which is code for "we are having a hard time selling this". By the way have a look at the U-Tube video below showing quenching from this system. We can't help ourselves we get such a kick out of seeing flames shooting to the ceiling even if we know that perhaps this is not entirely a good thing. "A leading global manufacturer of gear reducers, gearboxes, couplings, drivetrains, and open gearing has ceased operations at their Elgin, IL facility. The facility was formerly owned and operated by Flender Corp. and Winergy before it was sold to a major international manufacturer which recently decided to cease operations there. This well-known company produced components for many industrial applications, including mining, rail and transportation, power generation, wind, water/wastewater, cement, minerals and marine. As a result of this closure, all the machinery, equipment and real estate from the facility located at 950 Tollgate Road in Elgin, IL are available for sale". February 10/2015

Rounding; Rounding features are extensible which allows Bluestreak™ to add new rounding algorithms if needed in the future. Currently the ASTM E-29 - 08 specification is supported as well as the Boeing BAC-5650 specification (hardness results only). Two other rounding algorithms based within Microsoft SQL Server are also provided. With E-29, users can specify the rounding interval (rounded to nearest) and BAC5650, the rounding interval is set to the nearest 0.5 Rockwell number. Converted Units; With this feature, Measured Units (UOM) can be specified in addition to the Reported Units (UOM). This allows users to record hardness in one scale and report the hardness in the scale the customer requires. The conversion from the Measured to Reported must be done “manually” using the appropriate conversion table, most likely already stored next to the hardness testers. When results are reported on the certification, the proper syntax will automatically be used - “ConvertedValue UOM (MeasuredValue UOM)”. About Throughput I Bluestreak™; BLUESTREAK™ Suite is designed exclusively for a service-based manufacturing environment, where the primary focus is processing and not inventory management. Any service-based manufacturing company can easily customize BLUESTREAK™ to mirror unique business workflows. Find out more at go-bluestreak.com, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube" February 10/2015

The auto companies themselves might not be investing as much in in house heat treating but the parts suppliers in general and Linamar in particular are certainly adding capacity-we often lose track about how quickly Linamar is growing. Not that long ago the company set up operations in Arden, NC to produce transmission components. Late in 2014 the company announced a $115 million USD investment in this location and part of this investment includes a 24 cell ALD Vacuum Carburizing system which is being installed as we speak. When combined with Linamar’s VC systems in Mexico they become one of the largest vacuum carburizing company's in North America. Since we are talking about Linamar this press release from late in 2014 might also be of interest; “Linamar Corporation and the minority shareholders of Seissenschmidt AG (“Seissenschmidt”) today signed a definitive agreement for Linamar’s purchase of the remaining 34% of the shares of Seissenschmidt, which specializes in high volume hot forgings. Seissenschmidt has 3 primary lo cations in Germany, Hungary, and the United States. Linamar had previously announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire 66% of Seissenschmidt”. We mentioned furnace builder ALD above. There was a lot of talk a couple of months back about ALD (which is based in Hanau, Germany) moving

Monday Morning Briefing. Looking over our news items today we see that the majority cover new furnace orders and installations which always makes our day as a sign of the healthiness of the industry. First up is Consolidated Engineering Company (CEC to you) of Kennesaw, Georgia who has just landed an order from an aerospace parts supplier on the US west coast for a mobile drop bottom oven. The purpose we understand is for solution heat treating of jet engine components. CEC by the way is one of the largest new furnace builders in North America and while their capabilities are impressive we think of them mainly for aluminum heat treating. Cambridge Heat Treating in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada is just finishing installation of a SECO/WARWICK gas fired, vacuum temper/nitriding furnace. This is a beauty and yes you did read that right-gas fired. We at “The Monty” have seen perhaps 3 gas fired vacuum furnaces over the years so they are very much in the minority. However the province of Ontario now has almost the highest electrical rates in North America and soon will have the highest because of the province’s conviction that green energy is the only way to go. This of course means that nobody in Ontario heats with electricity if they can heat with gas. When the furnace is in production in just a few short weeks we will be able to provide you with a couple of photos. Commercial heat treater Metals Engineering in Green Bay, WI is growing again. This is a family owned operation offering carburizing, carbonitriding, stress relieving and a few other processes. The owner Ted Kemen has done a really top notch job of growing the company since he purchased it from his father a few years back and his latest acquisition is a brand new box furnace. This is a gas fired unit being built by McLaughlin Services of Avilla, IN and it will be a few more weeks before delivery. Northstar Aerospace a supplier of aerospace components with two locations in North America will shortly be adding more press quenching capacity at their location in Canada in the form of a Gleason Press Quench system.

some of the their offices to other locations in Germany with Berlin being mentioned. However press reports in Germany now say the company will be staying put in Hanau although in a new location in 2016.

Induction company Ajax Tocco Magnethermic whose banner ad can be found on this page recently issued this press release; "Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic Corp. received an order from a Mexican mining company for a stationary channel induction furnace for holding and maintaining at temperature a bath of molten zinc. The furnace is designed to improve the facility’s capacity by holding the molten zinc poured from existing Ajax TOCCO melting furnaces in operation". And to round things out we are going to leave you with a real good rumor. Rumor has it that one of the largest commercial heat treaters in the Chicago, IL area was recently sold to an investor based on the US eastern coast, Connecticut in particular. While we are pretty sure this is true we are going to wait for 100% confirmation before we mention the name of the company. And that is it for our Monday Morning Briefing, we hope it is a good week for everybody out there. February 9/2015 HARD DST-CR Press Release. HARD Technologies of Australia has offered up this press release about a heat treating process which diffuses chromium into tool surfaces rather than coating them which them claim vastly extends a tool's life and performance. While this is done in a fluid bed furnace which has fallen out of fashion in many areas of the world the company does offer some very strong reasons to consider this process. February 6/2015

We mentioned ALD moving into a new building down the road, might as well mention that Harper International just moved into a new building. Harper is an impressive company but we seldom run across them for the simple fact that they concentrate on the very high temperature systems, far above what the average heat treater would need. "Furnace and thermal processing specialist Harper International has announced the opening of new corporate headquarters and improvements to its Technology Research Center in Buffalo, New York, USA. The building includes new office space for engineering, technology, operations, sales and support staff and an improved Technology Research Center for its customers. “Creating synergy with our brand, mission and vision, the new headquarters provides us with the environment necessary to deliver the most innovative thermal processing systems possible,” the company stated". Furnace builder SECO/WARWICK seems to like the idea of "webinars". What we mean is that the company has had at least one or more of these webinars recently about different technologies and here is another one the company is presenting. Interesting conceptwe like it and are real curious about how these work out. "This Webinar is going to present truly groundbreaking carburizing technology that will allow many companies to double, triple, or even quadruple the carburizing productivity without consuming more production space. Date/Time: Thursday, February 19, 2:00 p.m. EST. This 30minute Webinar unveils truly new carburizing technology making it possible to double or triple (or more) your production depending on material and case depth. Watch actual examples of increased productivity with little or no increase to your current equipment footprint".

The DST process is a two-step process, both carried out in a fluid bed furnace: • •

first the part is nitrocarburised then the chromium diffusion treatment is performed (typically around 1050 °F / 570 °C)

The hardness profile and microstructures for a treated part (AISI H13) are demonstrated here:
