Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

ANNUAL MISSION APPEAL Welcome to Fr. Urey Patrick Mark, SVD ...who will celebrate the Masses this weekend and speak about the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries. Fr. Urey is originally from Liberia, Africa and he has served as a missionary in the inner cities of St. Louis and Chicago. He has also served as a missionary for a year in the south in St. Martinville, Louisiana. Fr. Urey is the Pastor of St. Nicholas Parish here in St. Louis, MO.

WHO WE ARE The Divine Word Missionaries are an international Religious Community working in more than 70 countries and on every continent except Antarctica, and one of the largest religious orders in the Roman Catholic Church with nearly 7,000 members worldwide.

WHAT WE DO Divine Word Missionaries work first and foremost where the Gospel has not been preached at all or where the local Church cannot survive and grow without the help of the missionaries. This missionary mandate takes them to some of the poorest and most remote areas in the world. The needs of the local Churches where Divine Word Missionaries serve are vast and diverse. From operating large universities, colleges and seminaries, to staffing hospitals, clinics and specialized communities to care for lepers, to running trade schools and shelters for street kids, to assisting local communities in building chapels—Divine Word Missionaries serve the poorest parishes in large cities of the developing world and the most remote jungle areas in places like the Amazon or Papua New Guinea.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Divine Word Missionaries help provide the most basic of life’s necessities like drinkable water, food and shelter. They help build chapels, celebrate the sacraments and spread the Word in the most remote mission communities. Their missionaries travel to the far corners of the world where they build hospitals to care for the sick, educate the poor, teach the hungry to farm and house the homeless. Together, with your prayers and your support, they are helping people—those neglected and forgotten—build a better future while growing vibrant Catholic communities of service and faith around the world.

This Mission Appeal is part of the Mission Coop Program of the Archdiocese. Please be generous in the second collection to help support their missionary work.

Questions Catholics are Asked Why do you call your priest “Father”? “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven” (Mt 23:9). In this passage, Jesus is teaching that God the Father alone is ultimately the source of all authority. But He is not speaking absolutely, because if so, that would eliminate even biological fathers, the title “Church Fathers,” the founding fathers of a country or organization, and so on. Jesus himself uses the term “father” in Matthew (15:4-5; 19:5, 19, 29; 21:31), John (8:56), and several other places. In the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, Jesus actually presents the Rich Man as using the address “Father Abraham” twice (Lk 16:24,30—see also Acts 7:23; Rom 4:12; Jas 2:21). St. Paul also uses the term when he writes, “I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (1 Cor 4:15—see also 1 Cor 4:14-16), and refers to “our forefather Isaac” (Rom 9:10).

A Prayer for Our Unknown Friends Heavenly Father, welcome into your embrace our friends overseas whose names we do not know, but whose terrible plight we rush to remedy. Bless the suffering people who struggle and sacrifice on behalf of their families. Grant them sustenance, shelter and opportunity. For this, we give you thanks. Amen.

Jokes of the Week Did you hear about the hitchhiker who never got anywhere? He’d get up early to avoid traffic. Don’t tell me you have a chocolate lab if you’re just talking about a kind of dog. I used to play sports. Then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I’m good at everything! Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family! Your brother in Jesus,

Please pray for our loved ones who are hospitalized or ill, including: Kathleen Bornhop, Betty Cave, Glenn Naeger, Katy Weber, Barb Pues, Kathy Bonser, Greg Wies, Catherine Weber, Ann Garrigan, Milton Haefner

THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me, ‘Son of man, I am sending you…’” EZEKIEL 2:2-3 God sends each of us to do some special work for Him. And, He gives us all the talents that we need to do that work. However, do we listen to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and give our time to do the work God asks of us? This is the basis for good stewardship. We pray that, in a spirit of service and sacrifice, we may generously use our time, talent and treasure to do the work which God has placed us here on earth to do.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 8, 2012

TV Worth Watching! America has been called a nation of immigrants. At the same time, immigration has been a divisive and emotional issue since the founding of our country. We are pleased to announce that the Nine Network has produced a documentary that explores immigration and its impact on individuals and communities through the lens of the 2012 election. This three-hour documentary, Homeland: Immigration in America, is narrated by PBS NewsHour correspondent Ray Suarez and will air on PBS stations across the country this month. Refugees airs Wednesday, July 11 at 8pm on Nine PBS and Nine World (repeated on Nine PBS Friday, July 13 at 2:00am and Sunday, July 15 at 1pm). Jobs airs Wednesday, July 18 at 8:00pm on Nine PBS and Nine World (repeated on Nine PBS Friday, July 20 at 2am and Sunday, July 22 at 1pm). Enforcement airs Wednesday, July 25 at 8:00pm on Nine PBS and Nine World (repeated on Nine PBS, Friday July 27 at 2:00am and Sunday, July 29 at 1:00pm).

We are looking for a company to service our business phones both at the parish and school offices as well as the school PA system. Please call Fr. John if you can help: 636-946-1893.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis recently sponsored a Chastity essay contest. Over the next couple of weeks, we will publish the winning essays from our Borromeo students. Here’s the first: Living the virtue of chastity can protect us from abortion and bless us with true holiness and health and happiness. Chastity is having the respect for your body and others and living your vocation with others. Living the virtue of chastity can protect you from abortion because abortion is killing a life. Another human being. Many people in the world do abortion and it’s very sad. Abortion can cause breast cancer. In a 1995 Harvard University study, over 2,000 women in Greece found a significant increase in risk of breast cancer of 51% among women who had an abortion. In 1994, the National Cancer Institute studied over 1800 women in Washington State and also found an increased risk of 50% among women who had any abortions. The risk was more than double for women whose abortion took place before age 18 or over age 30. Every year thousands of people go on a prolife march to help stop abortion in the world. There are other ways living the virtue of chastity can protect us. If you don’t do chastity there are things than can happen. You could end up getting a broken heart, a disease, a hurting relationship, become pregnant, losing self-respect, getting distracted from your life goals, feeling cheap or used, and you’re cheating yourself out of friendships with guys. Some girls think that if they really love the guy then sex must be okay. But sex outside of marriage is just a quick movement of pleasure. If you’re lucky. A lot of times the guy gets the thrills and the girl gets the heartache. There is an easy way to do chastity without losing your boyfriend. Pick your boyfriend wisely. Find out before hand if they are sexually active, because unless they share your purity commitment, they will eventually start the sex pressure. Consider a group or double dates. It’s hard to get alone and become intimate with other folks around. Having three or four would be a good group to be with. Be up front. Before you get into a cozy environment, tell the guy you’re saving sex for someone else. Your HUSBAND! Keep your clothes on. Sex is progressive. Undressing fuels the fire, especially for the visually turned on guy. Even the best sexual strategies come to a screeching halt when both keep their duds on. True love is about commitment. Otherwise known as marriage, a relationship that values you as a total woman. Heart, brain, dreams, emotions. Not just the body parts. Sarah Kelch

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 8, 2012

Next weekend, 15 of our high school teens and two adult chaperones will spend Friday through Sunday in Springfield, Missouri at the Steubenville Youth Conference! What? Thirty years ago, 500 youth and young adults gathered on campus in Steubenville, Ohio for the very first youth conference. This summer, over 40,000 teens will participate at eighteen youth conferences all over North America. Our teens go to the University of Southern Missouri in Springfield to participate. Franciscan University of Steubenville is a vibrant Catholic college built upon Jesus Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Rooted in Franciscan tradition, they accept the call given to St. Francis to “Go and rebuild My Church.” This is done not only through campus life, but also through the Youth Outreach Office, which serves the wider Church. Their focus is on bringing high school students into a life changing relationship with God and serving those who serve them. As people, we are created to seek and know the truth and encounter the life of God. Therefore, we are committed to boldly proclaiming Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life and illuminating for young people the richness of the Catholic Church. Steubenville understands that teens are constantly confronted with lies and choices that lead them away from Christ and the Church. These conferences not only provide teens the opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ, but challenge them to live for Him. Through the power of the Sacraments, inspiring talks, dynamic music, and expressive praise, teens are given an awesome weekend that can literally change the course of their lives. It is exciting to witness all that God has done and look with expectation toward the future. We ask that you partner with us in our mission through prayer for our Borromeo community participating in this weekend – for safe travel and for the opportunity to witness Jesus in our teens’ lives. For without the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do nothing.
