Weekly $4272.25 (incl. $337.25 in loose money); Diocesan Obligations $105; Fuel $202; Peter’s Pence $1217.52 (incl. $130.52 in loose money). I am grateful to all those who are supporting the parish. As stated previously, the weekly budget is nearly $6000. Obviously we are far from reaching this amount. Let me add that a couple of years ago we revisited the issue of savings, cut expenses to a minimum, did not increase the budget and did not increase spending despite the growing the costs.

Today’s Gospel tells the story of the sending out of the seventy-two, some of the first disciples in the burgeoning church. They must have been full of idealism and excitement as they went from town to town healing the sick and expelling demons. Today, the Fourth of July, we remember those who founded our country and can also imagine their excitement and idealism as they worked in this newly established country. Our Church, now over two thousand years old, is still in need of men filled with idealism and excitement who are willing to answer the call to the ordained priesthood. Today is a day to pray for vocations to the priesthood; as the Lord tells his disciples, “Ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest” (Luke 10:2). Diocesan Obligations. The second collection this weekend is for the Diocesan Obligations. For the month of June, the contributions were obligations. Several weeks ago the chairman of the Parish Council, Tony Kusek, made an appeal to increase the offering so we would not keep falling behind. Some parishes may not have a separate Diocesan Obligations collection because their regular collection provides enough income to meet this obligation. I look for your understand and be assured that I am always grateful for your support and dedication. Next weekend the second collection is designated for Fuel and Energy Costs

CHAPLET TO THE DIVINE MERCY Sunday, July 4th, is the first Sunday of the month and we will pray the chaplet to the Divine Mercy at 3 p.m. followed by benediction. We realize this is a holiday weekend but to recite the chaplet to the Divine Mercy at 3 p.m. at the hour of mercy is worth a little sacrifice. INDEPENDENCE DAY Today we commemorate the birth of our country. On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from England and Democracy was born. Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the “land of the free and home of the brave” so they can begin their American Dream. As we celebrate the 4th of July and reflect on its history, our gift

of freedom comes into special focus more than ever before. Our country is in continuous danger from terrorist attacks, inspired by hatred of some nations, who are eager to destroy our liberty and freedom. Defending our independence and preserving our national heritage cannot be done solely by the military. It requires personal involvement and participation of every individual. Traditionally, this is a day of parades, family gatherings, cookouts, and fireworks displays. We wish all parishioners a happy, safe and enjoyable Fourth of July! The Polish American Culture Committee in conjunction with Springfield Technical Community College will present the first Annual Taste of Polish Culture and Music Festival on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Springfield Technical Community College from 12 noon until 8 p.m. Two of New England’s best Polka Bands will perform–Eddie Forman Orchestra and Dennis Polisky & The Maestro’s Men. This free Music Festival will feature many cultural festivities including a variety of vendors with food from local Polish restaurants. A Polish folk dance group will perform and a film highlighting Polish culture will be shown in the Scibelli Hall Theater. Many other fun and game activities for the family will be held on the college green Bring your appetite, lawn chairs, and blankets. A Polka Mass will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. The Polka Mass consists of the same basic worship service celebrated in the Roman Catholic tradition but utilizing a unique mode of music. These old ethnic melodies are a joyous, inspiring worship service with the most unusual music and orchestration presented in a manner of dignity that enhances the solemnity of the Mass. SCHOOL NEWS St. Joseph 2009-2010 Yearbooks. These books are now available in the school office. Yearbooks can be picked up between 8 a.m. and 12 noon Monday through Friday. Thank you for your patience and support. – Jenn Mahlert EDUCATIONAL HOMESTAY PROGRAM From July 7 through August 2, 2010 approximately 127 international students are renting the facilities of St. Joseph School for the purpose of improving their English speaking skills. This program is under the leadership of the EF Education First/Educational Homestay Programs with Site Director Diane Sullivan of Charlton. The EF Educational Homestay Programs will provide enough teachers plus leaders and accepts full responsibility for personal injury or property damage. COMMENTS FROM OUR DOCENTS As docents, we had the opportunity to host a tour of our Basilica with the members of the Daughters of Isabella from St. Mary’s Parish in Putnam, CT. The stop at our church was part of a Mystery Ride inspired by an alumnus of St. Joseph School. The former student visits the Basilica often and wanted to share her experience. The group never expected to come to a church. Their interest peaked when they stood before the front entrance looking at the mysteries of the rosary so beautifully sculptured in the doors. Someone said “This is going to be different.” And that it was! When the swinging doors opened, they stood in absolute awe of the inspiring beauty within the walls of our Basilica. They just couldn’t take in enough of what they saw! They commented on living so close and not knowing of the magnificence we are privileged to enjoy every day. Throughout the tour we kept hearing “You must be so proud of your church!” They were attentive and eager to hear everything as we explained the visual catechism of our faith that surrounded us. We explained our history and the sacrifice of our ancestors who shared a pastor’s vision when this church was built. With plans for the renovation, our parishioners were once again called upon to meet the challenge of a pastor’s vision for our church culminating with the honor of being elevated to the status of Minor Basilica. Our visitors thanked us profusely for our hospitality and for the memorable experience of visiting our Basilica. They look forward to returning for Mass. It’s always inspiring to see our church through the eyes of a stranger. DRESS CODE AT DIVINE WORSHIP Sunday celebration for all Catholics is not only a sacred duty but a personal encounter with Jesus in the Eucharistic banquet. The Eucharist builds the Church and the Church makes the Eucharist. It has been the tradition for centuries that people from all walks of life, education, and dignities came to church dressed in their finest garments. In fact, it was the custom that a newly acquired dress, suit or shoes was first worn to church. I am pleased that many of our parishioners have deep respect and understanding of the dignity of liturgical worship and dress in proper attire. However, there are some individuals who, especially during the summer months, are dressed much too casually for church worship. There has to be a big difference between clothing worn to the park, beach or shopping, and that of Eucharistic celebration in the church. It is commendable to notice that people at various civil and municipal gatherings and meetings, even the clerks in large stores wearing dignified dress. The children and the teenagers should be reminded by the parents that the “trendy” or “high fashion” clothes are not appropriate for church. SALE OF PIEROGI AND GOLABKI This weekend following the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, and the 8:15 and 9:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday, pierogi and golabki will be on sale in the school cafeteria. They were frozen immediately after the close of the festival and are just as delicious when reheated. FESTIVAL RECEPTION On Tuesday, July 6th, all festival chairpersons and volunteers are invited to a light supper in the school cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. This friendly gathering will provide us with an opportunity to share our experiences and express suggestions for next year. NOTE: NO BINGO THIS SUNDAY, JULY 4TH. BINGO WILL RESUME SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2010. ISSUES OF CONCERN Safety and an inviting appearance of church grounds is extremely important. In fact, the children’s playground and the lawns around the church should reflect our attitude and pride. The church parking lot cannot become a center of town gatherings, skateboarding, a dog trail etc. In addition, the safety of the neighborhood goes beyond our property to neighboring houses. We ask you to be vigilant and if you notice any inappropriate activity please call the police.
