WORLD WIDE ALUMNI NEWS Why „Wiesenbach“?

June/July 2014

The name „Wiesenbach“ on the back of my jersey is my „German name“: „Kawahara“ means „Wiesenbach“ in German (Hara = lawn= Wiese, and Kawa = river =Fluss, Bach). It was a birthday present from my friends!

How did you experience the championship in Brazil? My experiece was two-sided. One side was as a football-fan. I must say that it was an amazing World Cup. Really exciting games, a lot of goals, almost all the matches were worth watching. I couldn‘t see all of them because unfortunately, it‘s exam time here in Brazil. But every day we talked about football with friends, kids, professors and neighbors. It was a quite different and an exciting atmosphere. The other side, as someone who was born and raised in Brazil: there were a lot of things that I wasn‘t happy with. It was expected that more infrastructure would be built in the whole country, but that didn‘t happen. The stadiums cost more than they should have and some of them are going to be totally useless after the World Cup. I would say that Brazil was lucky that they had an exciting World Cup, that was able to hide the „dark side“ of this event.

How did you become a German soccer fan? Was it during your time in Dortmund or before? Before going to Dortmund, I had watched and read news about soccer but I wasn‘t a big soccer fan. There was a Japanese player who used to play for BVB, Kagawa Shinji, but unfortunately, when I arrived in Dortmund, he transfered to England. However, the team, the city, the stadium were all absolutely fantastic and I think I became a „Borusse“. Now I read all the news about the BVB, the German and European soccer when I can, and I don‘t ever miss a BVB match. What was the most memorable moment in watching the world cup games?

She is currently a member of the North Rhine Westphalia Academy for Science and Arts.

I think the match between Brazil and Germany. My German friends wrote me days before the match for whom I would be cheering for and I answered „Of course Deutschland!“. When Germany scored the first goal, we celebrated intensively through messages and pictures, and then there were the 6 other amazing goals . We couldn‘t believe what was happening. It was really nice to be connected with my German friends and to celebrate with them, even though we were in different places. What did you do to celebrate the German World Cup win? I screamed a lot when Germany scored in overtime and when the match was over. I kept screaming while sending messages, pictures, voice (screaming) messages to my friends in Germany. I am really happy about the World Cup Championship!

4. INTERNATIONAL CAREER FAIR GETS CAREERS STARTED

On May 29th of this year, streets and forest roads all over Germany were filled with hustle and bustle. But it wasn’t the normal everyday pedestrian and transportation commotion that filled the streets but rather large groups of men, each with a wooden wagon filled with goodies in tow. It is a longstanding tradition in Germany, that the 40th day after Easter (Ascension Day a national holiday) is Father’s Day. However, Father’s Day in Germany is more commonly known as “Gentlemen’s Day” (Herrentag) because all men are invited to celebrate together on this special day. Each year, male friends and family members gather together and fill a small wooden wagon with food (often local specialties), beverages (most often beer) and on occasion a radio for music (top-40 folk music (Schlager) is common). Their journey usually does not have a distinct destination it is simply a lengthy trip out and about where men have the opportunity to laugh, chat and enjoy one another’s company.

Over 500 runners dashed over the starting line at this year’s 30th annual Campus Run at TU Dortmund University. Amongst the 500 starters was a small team from the International Office – Die Mitläufer (a German play on words meaning “the runners” or “tag-alongs”). The small but mighty team did not set any university records but did come out of their five kilometer run feeling fit!

Sky trams have been become common features at larger international airports. However, TU Dortmund University is one of the only German universities with one integrated into their campus - with 5,000 passengers each day! TU Dortmund University’s sky tram, the „H-Bahn”, celebrated its 30th birthday this May. The fully-automated high-flying tram was installed in 1984 to ease travel for students, faculty and staff between the northern and southern portions of campus. It only takes two minutes to travel 1.1 km. Thanks to the machine‘s automation and a structured timetable, delays are almost impossible. As the campus expanded so did the sky tram’s travel route, reaching other important locations like TechnologieparkDortmund (a fast growing hub for technological research and business development).

As the university level competition Invent the Future - NRW drew to a close in late May of this year, TU Dortmund University scientist won awards in two out of the three invention categories. Dr.-Ing Nooman Ben Khalifa, Alessandro Selvaggio and Professor A. Erman Tekkaya, all researchers in the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction (IUL) at TU Dortmund University, were awarded in the category “ engineering and sciences” for their project “Kontinuierliche Strangpresse für Aluminiumprofile” (Extrusion Press for Aluminum Objects). The group’s invention made the aluminum excursion process continuous and more efficient than ever before.

For the 4th year in a row TU Dortmund University partnered with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce to bring the International Career Fair to life. The event gave international students and 14 local companies the opportunity to engage on a personal level. The international students also had the chance to gather information about future job and internship opportunities.

The roots of German Father’s Day rituals can be traced back to 18th century rural traditions. During this time period, Ascension Day was a day to celebrate farmers. Farmers were carried into the village-center in small wooden wagons. The farmer with the most children was then awarded a ham from the village‘s mayor. With time these traditions were adapted to fit modern culture and German society. The uniqueness of this holiday make it really worth experiencing! So if you are ever invited out for “Gentlemen’s Day” or are in Germany when it is taking place be sure to check it out!

At this years‘ event several records were broken including the highest number of event participants! Record times in the 10 kilometer race were awarded to Hendrik Preiffer (32:51) and Alexandra Tiegel (41:22). In addition, to the standard 5 and 10 kilometer races was the famous “Math Tower Stair Run” in which participants ascended 242 stairs (10 flights) in the university’s tallest building. This year’s winners conquered the tower in just over a minute! For more information about what TU Dortmund University has to offer for everyone passionate about sports, visit the HSP´s website: www.hs.tu-dortmund. de Einen erneuten Teilnehmerrekord feierte der 30. Dortmunder Campuslauf. Stock statt.

TU Dortmund University’s above ground tram is a symbol of the university’s continued commitment to innovation and to campus convenience. The next time you are on campus be sure to take a short ride on the “H-Bahn” - no campus tour is complete without it!

The second group of TU Dortmund University winners were in the category “Advancement through Transference”. The winning team was composed of one current TU Dortmund professor, Rolf Wichmann from the faculty of Biochemical and Chemical engineering, one former TU Dortmund professor, Lars Blank (now at RWTH Aachen) and Dr. Frank Rosenau from the university of Ulm. The team won first place with their project “ Verfahren zur Herstellung von Biotensiden” (A Production Process for Biosurfactants). The two winning TU Dortmund project groups faced a large group of competitors. Within the three competing categories there were 155 teams from all over NRW.

Over 60 international students from 20 different countries registered to participate in this year’s career fair. These students, who primarily major in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, economics and social sciences were given the morning portion of the day to meet with the different companies. “ I have had three really interesting and helpful interviews, I think I have a good chance of getting an internship position,” boasted one of the student attendees. In the afternoon, students who hadn’t registered for interviews were also invited to attend presentations put on by participating companies. TU Dortmund University’s yearly career fair demonstrates the diverse opportunities and international audience that Dortmund has to offer. “Around eleven percent of the 31,500 students at TU Dortmund University are international students. The university also has wide spread connections with other universities and research institutions all over the world. The International Career Fair is a great example of how integration is emphasized for our international students,” remarked Barbara Schneider, International Office head.
