CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP June 15 - 18, 2016 MESSIAH COLLEGE CPFJ’s annual Jazz Camp was a resounding success again this year with over 75 students attending! Our thanks to Dr. Bill Stowman and the staff at Messiah College for welcoming us to the campus again this year - it was our 15th Annual Central PA Jazz Camp and the 7th at Messiah College! The year’s outstanding faculty included special guests Steve Wilson & Stefon Harris. We thank the Olewine Family Trust for their loyal underwriting of the Camp and we extend our gratitude to Penn National Insurance, The Hall Foundation, The Children’s Home Foundation and private donors for providing scholarships for fourteen students. We will have the dates for next year’s camp soon, so be sure to share the information with your young musician friends and have them join us at next year’s Camp - it’s a very inspiring! .

CENTRAL PA FRIENDS OF 2016 FALL CONCERT SERIES We kick off this series with our third year of hosting an evening at the Dauphin Co. Jazz & Wine Fest at Ft. Hunter Park on September 9th. We feature two groups - the legendary jazz organist Dr. Lonnie Smith and his Trio, and an ensemble lead by rising star steel pan player - Leon Foster Thomas. Sponsor, Corporate and Life Members of CPFJ will be mailed tickets. All other members must order tickets from the Dauphin County Parks and Recreation website. Tickets are $30 and include all three days of the Festival with wine tastings and much more! We are grateful to the Dauphin County Commissioners for the generous grant that funded this event.

Our second Fall Concert on October 9th features the critically acclaimed tenor player from New York City - Harry Allen. He will be bringing a quintet that features the wonderful vocalist Hilary Gardner. An authentic master of the jazz saxophone tradition, Harry is right at home with the timeless music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Duke Ellington. His style of playing certainly recaptures the essence of the ultra cool sound and the easy, lyrical phrasing of Stan, Al and Zoot. This event will be hosted in a new venue for CPFJ - the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center. The Center was originally the Jewish Community Center of Harrisburg and has a 2nd floor ballroom that will serve as a classic backdrop for Harry’s traditional ensemble. We close our 36th Concert Season on November 27th with a true jazz legend guitarist Pat Martino. Pat’s storied career has included recordings with Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Eric Kloss, Groove Holmes & Jack MacDuff and he has been at the forefront of the jazz guitar world since the mid-60’s. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gutwrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in music. We return to the beautiful brewery and distillery, Wyndridge Farm, just outside of York, PA, for this performance with Pat’s exciting Trio. FALL CONCERT SERIES: 1st Fall Concert - Fri., Sept. 9th - Dauphin Co. Jazz & Wine Fest - Central PA Friends of Jazz Night Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio & Leon Foster Thomas Quintet 6:30 - 10pm Wine tastings, music and more! 2nd Fall Concert - Sun., Oct. 9th - Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center (HMAC) 1110 N. 3rd St., Hbg. CENTR AL PA FRIENDS O F

JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions, the JazzMobile, and concerts -

HELP SUPPORT OUR 36th ANNUAL CENTRAL PA JAZZ FESTIVAL! As you have probably already read elsewhere in this newsletter, we have planned an outstanding program for CPFJ's 36th Annual Jazz Festival. Although we are very cost conscious, bringing top quality musicians, arranging for facilities, advertising, and all the things that are required to organize our Festival cost money...quite a bit of money! Like all arts groups, CPFJ must rely on financial support from those who appreciate and understand the value of live jazz. Our membership fees, ticket prices and grants only cover approximately 65% of the costs to produce concerts and festivals. We need your support for the 36th Annual Central PA Jazz Festival to succeed. .

We ask you to make a special contribution to the success of the 36th Annual Festival. Become an Underwriter with your tax-deductible contribution and let us list your name as a supporter in the program booklet. You may also choose to pay tribute to a friend or musician by listing their name in the program. Or, if you prefer, take an ad in the program to promote your business or organization. The program will highlight all of the events and artists for the Festival and will be distributed at all Festival events and our Fall Concert Series (from August through November, 2016). .

The deadline for inclusion in our program is fast approaching. If you are interested, please give us a call or complete the form on the next page and mail it to us right away or go to our website and use our ONLINE STORE to place your order. We can also accept your information/ad by email at [email protected]. .

Each and every donation, no matter the size, is truly appreciated. Thank you! .

Your 36th Annual Festival Committee: Tim Warfield, Jr., Wilma Soliday, Sheila Ross, Keith Thomas, Mark Swartzbaugh & Leslie Beamer

WE'RE BUILDING A LIBRARY & STORE .

As some of you may have heard, we recently doubled our office space at 5721 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, allowing us for the first time to have a library/shop. Concurrently, we received a very generous bequest from Joseph Shaw of York...almost 3,000 cd's, hundreds of lp's, and other music formats. Here's where you might be able to help us. We need folding tables (72’ preferably) and shelves that can hold a fair amount of weight. We don't need a lot of them...our space isn't that big...but two tables and two sets of shelv es would be great. If you have these items as surplus OR if you know of someone who might have them OR if you would like to contribute some green, just let us know. We would like to get this space arranged so that members could see the whole collection, and so that we can accept more donations from other members and friends - please contact the Office for more information.
