PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear OSSPEAC Members, I hope this newsletter finds you all to be well and enjoying what might actually be spring popping up across our great state. I wanted to give everyone a few words of encouragement as you all finish up your IEPs, ETRs, progress reports, and other paperwork for the remainder of the school year. It is almost summer break, and we can do it! One of the things that helps me through when days at work get long and overwhelming is looking ahead to summer. OSSPEAC has many great events and opportunities for you to participate in this summer and into the fall. Please take a minute to look through this month's newsletter. It is chock full of great information on multiple regional events, CEU opportunities, and information on the upcoming OSSPEAC fall conference. Your board and conference committee will be hard at work this summer to continue to advocate for and plan for your professional needs. On April 5, 2016, The Ohio Speech and Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition (OSHGAC) held their Legislative Reception at the State House Atrium in Columbus, Ohio. OSHGAC, founded in 1982, is a coalition of Ohio speech and hearing professional organizations including the Ohio Academy of Audiology, the Ohio Council of Speech and Hearing Administrators, the Ohio Speech Language Hearing Association and the Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition. The evening reception continues to be well attended by colleagues and members of the General Assembly.

To help encourage your participation in the new FACEBOOK group we are offering a complimentary registration to one of the upcoming OSSPEAC sponsored regional events! Log onto the FACEBOOK group page and post a response to the May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (MBHS) post.

The legislative reception also provides an opportunity for OSHGAC to recognize a legislator who supports issues that directly affect the professions of audiology and speech language pathology and consumers with hearing loss and communicative disorders. We were pleased to honor Representative Tim Brown as the 2016 OSHGAC Legislator of the Year. He was chosen for his work on HB 98, which names May 14th as Childhood Apraxia of Speech Awareness Day in Ohio. He sponsored the bill after meeting with a local family support group in his district. Representative Brown was contacted by constituents regarding this issue that was near and dear to their hearts. We honor Representative Brown because he is a leader who listens and finds appropriate and meaningful responses to the matters that are important to those he serves. The GAC recognizes that we have an ally in speech, language, hearing and communication issues in Representative Brown and we are very appreciative of that. OSHGAC is currently in the planning stages for a legislative event in 2017. The membership will be alerted as soon as details are confirmed. Your participation is necessary in order to affect policy changes in the state of Ohio. GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE It is a busy time of year for the grants and scholarship committee. We have recently awarded SOS Grants, are reviewing applications to determine the Julie S. Kelly Memorial Scholarship recipient and initiating an OSSPEAC Graduate Scholarship that will be awarded this summer. Congratulations to our SOS Grant recipients. Shannon Johnson with London City Schools and Michelle Wilson with the Auglaize County Educational Service Center were awarded grants last month. We are thankful for all of our members that take the time to apply for funds to support their students. We are also thankful for our members that sponsor students for the Julie S. Kelly Memorial Scholarship. Applications were due April 1, 2016 and the scholarship will be awarded later this month. The OSSPEAC Graduate Scholarship will be awarded this summer. The OSSPEAC Graduate Scholarship has been established to raise awareness among graduate students and to recognize excellence of academic and clinical skills of individuals who plan a career in an educational setting. The scholarship is designed to assist audiology and speech pathology graduate students. Applications are due July 1, 2016. Detailed information can be found at osspeac.org/ scholarships.

OSSPEAC HONORS NOMINATIONS The OSSPEAC Honors Committee invites nominations for 2016 Honors of OSSPEAC. It is very important for members to submit nominations for those individuals who have contributed to the field in positive ways. Please consider colleagues and others for these awards. The awards will be presented at the Fall Conference. The 3 award categories are Honors of OSSPEAC, Founder’s Award, and Outstanding Service Award. This award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions through: • Participation in/contribution to OSSPEAC • Outstanding clinician/supervisor • Provided or initiated innovative programming • Contributed to publications/literature/research • Other areas of achievement deemed worthy of nomination Founders’ Award This honor is awarded to up to two members in good standing who exemplify the mission of OSSPEAC, “Removing Communication Barriers for Ohio’s Children” will be honored. The speech/language pathologist and/or educational audiologist will have made an impact through service to their local school district or student(s) in their school district. The following information is considered when nominating a member: • Improving the life of students who have speech, language, and hearing needs • Collaboration with district personnel, parents, and students • Excellence in innovative contributions and programs to the work setting • Professionalism • Leadership at the local level This award is presented by OSSPEAC in honor of the Founders’ of OSSPEAC. Outstanding Service Award This award is presented to an individual who has provided outstanding support to speech/language pathology and/or educational audiology services being provided in a school/ educational setting. Individuals may include a classroom teacher, administrator, classroom assistant, educational interpreter, intervention specialist, occupational or physical therapist, counselor, social worker, parent, legislator, or member of another organization. Participants Needed for a Research Study TOPS Text Organization for Preschoolers in Special Education

WHO? This study is open to speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with preschoolers with language impairment in early childhood special education classrooms.

WHEN? September 2016 - May 2017

WHAT? A book reading program that includes three 8-week modules. You will either deliver all three modules or continue therapy as usual. •

You may or may not be randomly assigned to deliver all three modules of the book reading program.

If you are assigned to deliver the reading program, you will attend module training. You will videotape yourself weekly during small-group book readings sessions (equipment provided) and complete record-keeping paperwork related to the program.

MEET OUR PRESENTER: Sue Grogan-Johnson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an associate professor in speechlanguage pathology at Kent State University, Kent, Oh. She teaches courses in pediatric and adult language disorders and directs the school-based teleprac ce project at the university. Sue is a Past President of OSSPEAC and current Newsle er Editor. This program focuses on treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) especially treatment using Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), a motor based approach that is one of the leading interventions for children with moderate to severe CAS. It will emphasize clinical thinking and decisionmaking as central to the processes of selecting and implementing any treatment approach. Because principles of motor learning are incorporated in DTTC, they will be introduced and discussed in the context of ongoing decision making during intervention. Rationale and procedures will be described for children of different ages and levels of severity. Available evidence for the efficacy of DTTC will also be presented. Video demonstration and group discussion procedures will facilitate active participation by program participants.

The content of this program is designed to be appropriate for parents as well as speech-language pathologists.

This program is intended for speech language pathologists employed in a variety of settings and parents. The program is also appropriate for undergraduate and graduate speechlanguage pathology students in training. It is also designed to be valuable to parents of children who have CAS; parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Dr. Edythe Strand is an emeritus consultant in Division of Speech Pathology for the Mayo Clinic Department of Neurology and emeritus professor in the Mayo College of Medicine. Dr. Strand’s research has focused on developmental, acquired and progressive apraxia of speech and issues related to intelligibility and comprehensibility in degenerative dysarthria. She is an experienced clinician who has worked in the public schools, private practice, hospital and clinic settings. Her primary clinical research interests include assessment and treatment of children and adults with neurologic speech, language and voice disorders. Dr. Strand’s publications include many articles and book chapters related to motor speech disorders.
