Description

Graphic Identity and Style Guide Welcome to the Rogue Community College Graphic Identity and Style Guide, a comprehensive manual for producing communication materials with a unified image that convey the message of our unique institution. The guidelines in this manual

are meant to help save time and achieve excellent results in the marketing and public relations materials produced at and for RCC.

Purpose

Contents

Presenting a unified image is crucial as Rogue Community College competes with other colleges for students, faculty members, funding, and donor gifts. Therefore, it is important to represent RCC’s visual image as clearly and consistently as possible. A well-defined identity helps build recognition for the college. The RCC logotype and communication, photography, and overall design styles identify the college in a consistent manner to the community.

SECTION 1 – Getting Started.

Adherence to the outlines of this style guide will aid in that goal. The intention of these standards is not to discourage creativity but rather to simplify the communication process for the sake of unity and professionalism.

Section 1 Getting started The RCC Marketing and Recruitment Department acts as a checkpoint to review informational and promotional communications for release to the public and also serves as the creative production center for all college departments. When it comes to conveying the message and overall image of the institution, every job counts.

Encapsulated postscript

(.eps) files and Portable Network Graphics (.png) of the RCC logo are available on the RCC Web site at http://web.roguecc.edu/node/113 NOTE: To maintain the highest resolution, do not try to “open” a logo eps or png. Instead “insert” or “place” it into your document. The logotype must be used as specified in these guidelines.

All versions of the logotype must be used “as is” and cannot be modified. Portions of any version of the logotype cannot be used separately. Other files may be subject to these same rules and guidelines. For more information about the use of the electronic files, the use of the logotype or to acquire camera-ready artwork, contact the Marketing and Recruitment Department. Templates for flyers and brochure are available at http://web.roguecc.edu/ marketing-and-recruitment/.

Section 2 Identity basics Posters, flyers, banners, brochures, websites . . . While they are all different, each product is a component of a much larger picture, a family that should share common elements. Piece by piece, each element combines for one powerful and effective impression.

The official logotype The official family of Rogue The horizontal version

is the college’s principal logotype as it highlights the acronym RCC, provides the river logomark and includes the full name of the college. Use for most The official logotype consists of the letters publications. RCC, the river and trees artwork, and the words “Rogue Community College.” Community College logos have been carefully designed to represent the institution.

The official logo depicted in two variations is the only logo that represents the college. The name as depicted is part of the logotype and must not be altered. Nor should the logotype artwork (river and trees) be separated from the college name.

The vertical version

can be used when space requirements call for a more vertical stacked version. Note that the logo mark is above the RCC and college name.

To emphasize the importance

of the RCC Web site, it is appropriate to include the college’s Web address, in Trebuchet regular, immediately below the logotype. The logos are available for download at http://web.roguecc.edu/node/113

Clear space/sizing When using any approved

version of the logotype, it is important that the area surrounding the logo remain free of clutter. The logo should not have to compete with other type or imagery. To ensure this, approved versions of the logotype must never appear closer than the height of the letter “m” as it is found in the word “Community” to the edge of the paper or to any other typography or artwork.

When reproducing

logotypes in print applications, the minimum acceptable sizes for each version of the logotype are seen here.

Color/manipulation RCC logos are clear

identifiers, not mere artwork to be manipulated or tweaked to fit a particular application or document. The colors, sizes, proportions, and overall design used to create each logotype have been carefully selected for aesthetic and practical purposes. Each logotype has been created for a wide variety of applications. Do not try to re-create the logotype; it should originate from one of the approved graphics available in various formats for Mac, PC, and the Web.

To ensure quality

Unauthorized icons

or words should never be used in conjunction with the logotypes.

Use the logo artwork as is.

• Do not overprint the logo onto text. • Do not use unapproved colors. • Do not use the mark (river and trees artwork) by itself. • Do not stretch or condense the logos. • Do not use the logos on an angle.

and consistency, use only official electronic versions of each logo. The only acceptable color combination are blue (PMS 293C) on white, white on black or white on the approved RCC color palette.

Color/manipulation It is permissible to print

the logotype entirely in one-color ink, preferably 100 percent black or 100 percent blue (PMS 293C or PMS300U). When using one color, the logo is to be printed as a solid color. Do not screen (print ink as a percentage of solid) any portion of the logo.

There may be occasions

when a reverse-form logo is necessary. It is acceptable for the logo to reverse out of a 100 percent color bar in any of the approved primary or secondary palette colors (see page 12). If an approved version of the logotype is to be used in reverse form against a dark or colored background, use the official artwork for reverse reproduction.

Athletics and Student logos RCC Ospreys Graphic Standards

Rogue Community College now has an athletics program and will be competing in cross country and men’s and women’s soccer in the fall of 2015. RCC is the “Ospreys” (Not Osprey) The Marketing and Recruitment Department developed an Ospreys logo created by John Moore, a RCC design student, for the Athletic Department. While it may be very tempting to use the RCC Ospreys logo in your correspondence and departmental materials, the logo is limited for use by only the Athletic Department and Student Life programs. Any use of the athletic logo— even for athletics or student life—must be approved by Marketing and Recruitment. The traditional RCC logo is still the choice for all RCC letterheads, flyers, business cards, posters, brochures, and other departmental uses.

Additional logos Other logos and symbols

are sometimes used to represent a particular organization or program at RCC. Some approved logos currently in use are shown at right (TRiO, Small Business Administration, Small Business Development Center, RCC Foundation). However, a plethora of logos that compete with the RCC “brand” or logotype is discouraged. For reproduction rights or for specific details regarding these additional logos, contact Marketing and Recruitment.

Typography The college logotype

employs one font: The initials RCC and the words “Rogue Community College” are created in the font or typeface Adobe Garamond Pro. This type face and letter spaces specific to the college logo have been further adjusted to create a unique look that cannot be recreated by simply typing those words in the specified font. Do not try to recreate the logotype on your own computer. Instead, use the official, approved versions available at web.roguecc.edu/marketing-andrecruitment/. Century Gothic (regular) abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLNOPQRSTUVWXYZ .,?!1234567890

Century Gothic (bold) abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLNOPQRSTUV .,?!1234567890

In printed materials,

Century Gothic is the approved headline type. A classic sans serif that possesses some embellishment, it can be used on flyers, brochures, ads and other publications to grab attention.

For correspondence,

Garamond regular (not bold) should be used. Single line spacing with 12 pt. type is optimum. If Garamond is unavailable, Times New Roman is an acceptable substitute.

Garamond is the acceptable body text used in published official college communication pieces. Garamond is a serif type and therefore easier to read than san serif fonts. In most cases, avoid using type smaller than 8 pt. with 12 pt. leading. If Garamond is unavailable, Times New Roman is an acceptable substitute. Slogans/taglines RCC no longer uses

a tagline. Use of two previous taglines, “Our goal is your success” and “Life’s best lessons start here” have been discontinued. Do not use them on any publications or correspondence. No other slogan or tagline should be used.

Web logotype The RCC logotype

has been adapted for use on Web pages with low-resolution and low-speed applications. All official college Web pages must use the college Web page template. This template incorporates the use of the college logotype. Other uses of the logotype on the Web are limited to the variations in this guidebook. These logotype variations should be used in their entirety when creating banner ads or when organizations outside the college request a logotype to use for the purposes of linking their site to ours. Do not disassemble, use in part, or modify logotype.

The logotype variations

have been optimized for use on the Web. • The file size has been compressed to allow for the highest quality and minimum file size. • Each logo variation has been saved in a jpg or eps format. These are standard image file format for use on the Web. • Each logo has been saved at 72 dpi. To access Web logotypes, contact the Internet Services Department at Ext. 7239. For consultation and assistance in using the Web versions of the logotype, contact the Internet Services Department at Ext. 7239.

Photos RCC publications feature

a consistent photographic style. Photos are generally cropped from the waist up or tighter (neck up). A positive, confident facial expression is captured. Photos feature a soft play of light and shadow to avoid images that look flat or harsh. Images capture a genuine moment of learning, accomplishment or human interaction and do not appear posed or stiff. Soft focus is used to keep the subject matter sharp and clear. Backgrounds are kept simple but vaguely recognizable to add dimension to the image. For print publications, photos must be at least 300 dots per inch (dpi). Photos used for the Web may be 72 dpi.

18

Section 3 Applications Image is important. A coordinated system of promotional products, college stationery, and other identification materials establishes an unmistakable, unified brand in internal and external communication at RCC.

Collateral materials When creating collateral materials, Marketing and Recruitment uses Adobe InDesign, a professional design and layout tool for producing high-quality documents for print and on screen delivery. Full-bleed, full-color photography features students or students with RCC faculty or staff members as the dominant visual on all collateral materials. These include the RCC Schedule of Classes and Catalog covers, viewbooks and recruiting tools, the RCC website, student service and academic brochures, all print advertising, direct mail, etc. A call to action is present but secondary to the student success story being featured. Testimonial copy is concise and to the point. Individuals photographed are accurately identified.

The call to action,

contact information and logo may be contained in a color bar at the bottom or side of the ad or flyer, providing an opportunity to use the RCC promotional palette. A conversation about

“Something Old, Something New: Exploring the State of Marriage”

and simple. Negative space is used to provide a clean, bright message. Minimal copy flows through the ad over the image leading the eye toward the call to action and the RCC logo sign-off.

Program

The institution of marriage has undergone significant change, especially in the last decade. In Oregon, citizens remain in a contentious debate about how to define marriage generally. What do the debates about marriage—in this state and beyond—reveal about the institution as a whole? Why is a private relationship so publicly significant and contested? And why, when so many people are avoiding or dissolving marriages, do so many others wish to marry?

Section 4 Web standards and guidelines As with print, electronically published information plays an important role in maintaining the college’s reputation and image. These standards help ensure the RCC website is visually appealing, well written and conforms to the college’s graphic identity and style guide. Web resources should be used efficiently, ethically and legally, and all employees are expected to conform to the RCC Electronic Resource Policy.

Content management RCC is transitioning

to a Web-based content management system (CMS) for all department/ program websites. Drupal is designed to meet the goals of improved website content maintenance, increased consistency in college branding, and improved accessibility and navigation across the campus department websites.

The Drupal CMS

is template-driven and allows faculty and staff to maintain their website via a web browser. Within the Drupal CMS are help files with detailed instructions for using the WYSIWYG editor. Training is available by contacting webmaster@ roguecc.edu and requesting assistance.

28

Drupal is database driven and pulls dynamic content from RogueNet in the following areas:

• Faculty — Faculty listed will have worked during the current fiscal year. Drupal will automatically drop the listing if a faculty member has not worked in over a year. • Class schedule — Pulls in the current schedule of classes for the specific department • Course descriptions — Pulls in the current course descriptions for the specific department.

Web page standards Writing guidelines

The three main guidelines for Web writing are: 1. Be succinct. Write no more than 50 percent of the text you would have used in a hardcopy publication. 2. Write for scannability. Don’t require users to read long continuous blocks of text. 3. Use hypertext (links) to split up long information into multiple pages.

Content standards

• All pages are part of the RCC website and will use the approved Web template available within Drupal. • New Times Roman is the approved font headlines (h tags) and Ariel is the approved font for body content. • Content needs to be updated and maintained on a regular basis. Review and retire content that’s no longer applicable. • The content on all academic main departmental pages will be reviewed by Marketing and Recruitment to ensure consistency.

Web page structure

• Structure pages with two or three levels of headlines (a general page heading plus subheads, and sub-subheads when appropriate). Nested headings also facilitate access for users with screen readers. Use style headings h2, h3 and h4. • Use meaningful headings (i.e., reading a heading should tell the user what the page or section is about). • Use highlighting and emphasis sparingly to make important words catch the user’s eye. Italics should be used for emphasis only and not used in headlines. • No Flash, background images, animated gifs or blinking text are to be used. • Text should be black and remain consistent through the entire departmental page.

www.roguecc.edu

• Any animation used on the page must be approved by Marketing and Internet Services to maintain optimal end-user load speeds and a consistent look. • The color of links and visited links should be set to default. • All RCC pages will be hosted only on RCC Web servers. • All Web pages should be saved in lower case with no spaces between words.

29

Standards (cont.) Links to external sites

Links provided to external sites must be accessible, appropriate and maintained to avoid “404 page not found” errors. External links to sites off the RCC Website must open in a new window.

Copyrighted materials

Written permission must be obtained for use of copyrighted materials with the clear understanding on the part of the copyright holder that these materials will be used on the Web rather than in a printed publication. This applies to the use of text, logos, photographs, drawings, video clips, sound clips or other copyrighted visual images.

Use of photos/images

The ideal size for images on the Web is 300X250 pixels. Use Photoshop (Adobe) or Paint (Windows) to resize images before embedding them in a Web page. All images must include height and width attributes. In addition, all images must include appropriate text descriptions in the “ALT” attribute. Banner images will be taken for each department website through coordination with Internet Services. To request a banner image, contact the webmaster at [email protected]. If a professional photo is used on a staff or bio page, it must be a recent shot of the staff member only. To achieve a consistent look, it may not include family, friends or pets. The photo will be a headshot representing the staff member in professional attire. Slideshows using Flash are not acceptable as they do not run on iPads or iPhones. The “WOW Slider” product will work within Drupal and is responsive design. To use “WOW,” contact the webmaster at [email protected]. Use clipart sparingly and make sure the image matches the educational use you have planned.

Using tables

Tables should be used for tabular data. If tables are used for page layout, standards must be followed for accessibility. To make a table accessible, give it both a caption and summary. Non-visual browsers can read the summary information without having to go through the table cells to find out what the table is for. • Caption tag — Appears on the screen and is used as the table title • Summary attribute — Gives a broader description of the table’s purpose Fall Term Syllabus ... The caption tag must be the first thing after the opening tag, and there can only be one in each table.

Section 5 Style guide To convey a clear and concise message in all publications — from course catalogs to brochures and flyers to human interest stories and advertising — RCC publications use specific terminology and a style of writing adapted from the Associated Press.
