TO SERVE AND TO HONOR By Phil Peters Lincoln High School teacher

T

his fall the community will see a unique structure being constructed in the front of Lincoln High School (LHS). It is a fitting monument honoring all LHS veterans and memorializing those from the high school who have given their lives in service to their country. During the past 2005-2006 school year, LHS students, faculty and community leaders planned the creation of the LHS Veterans Memorial, which will consist of 20 granite columns and a plaza with inscribed pavers and benches. The design comes from the Eastland-Fairfield architecture program, based at LHS, and construction will be funded by donations from individuals, schools, churches, businesses and service organizations. In spring 2005, three high school teachers through a grant from the National Council for Social Studies were trained in engaging students in service learning projects. The students were required to develop partnerships with local organizations and businesses in order to plan and implement the project. The Gahanna students chose to create a project entitled “To Serve and To Honor.“ Its purpose is to find ways to support our troops who are currently deployed overseas, to record the stories of LHS alumni who have served in past wars, to honor all LHS high school veterans, to educate elementary students about the effects of war on Gahanna

and finally to create a memorial to those who have lost their lives in service. The memorial will be used by teachers as an extension of the classroom and a place for reflection as well as being accessible to the community. It will serve as a reminder to all about the sacrifices that are and have been made for our freedom. The perimeter columns will have the emblem of each military branch and their core values engraved on them. The inner columns will have the names of those who have lost their lives during wartime. Fourteen names from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the current War on Terrorism will be engraved. A website is being created to provide a virtual visit to the memorial. Many thanks to the hundreds of students and adults from the community who have given time, talent and treasure for this project. At this time over $148,000 has been pledged for the project with an additional $30,000 of in-kind contributions. Also, a special acknowledgement goes out to the Gahanna Rotary for their $10,000 sponsorship of the entrance sign to the memorial plaza. Brigadier General Jeffery Horne, a 1976 LHS graduate, will be the featured speaker at a Nov. 3rd community dedication ceremony. Horne, who is currently serving our nation in Iraq, will make a special trip home to speak for our veterans who will be honored by the memorial plaza.

Many hands and many voices have joined together across the community to turn a desire to recognize the contributions of our veterans into a unique and powerful memorial plaza. The “To Serve and To Honor“ project is a student-driven endeavor. Future architects enrolled in the Gahanna-Eastland/Fairfield Architectural Engineering program have been instrumental in the design phase with Alex Behn and Sean Kirk taking a leadership role. Students will continue to collaborate with local business partners who have pledged staff and materials to complete the construction of the memorial plaza.

Foundation Celebration – Bigger and Better! By Dale Foor Coordinator, Community Service

T

he Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation (GJEF) again hosted a sold-out event at the Jefferson Country Club, welcoming over 500 guests to a Mardi Gras Celebration. Live jazz and blues and a creative cuisine provided by 26 area restaurants set the tone for a festive evening. It was a shoppers’ paradise as bargain hunters competed over 400 silent auction items and an additional ten live auction packages including exclusive golf packages, vacation condos and evenings of entertainment. Many thanks to our generous $5,000 Corporate Sponsors— Kroger, M/I Homes, and The Stonehenge Company—as well as the 16 businesses who purchased corporate tables and our 32 patron ticket guests. The final tally from ticket sales, auction items and a vacation raffle sponsored by AAA Ohio Auto Club and

Southwest Airlines netted over $71,000. Additionally, GJEF was the recipient of a $55,000 donation from the Gahanna Area Fund, entrusting the foundation to continue to support educational programs across the district. Featured in the evening festivities was the honoring of the 2006 GJEF Cornerstone recipients: Phil Koppel, Noami Foder, Richard Wells and Burt Reed (posthumous award). Each was recognized for their distinguished professional service to our students. The very successful Celebration of Excellence would not have been possible without the many helping hands and tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers. Many thanks to all! GJEF Grants Promote Excellence By Dale Foor Coordinator, Community Service

T

he impact and benefit of the past two year’s Celebration of Excellence is resulting in enrichment opportunities for district students. Proceeds from the 2004 celebration funded 19 grants totaling to nearly $16,000. This past spring, an allocation of $54,000 was set aside to fund educational grants. In May, twenty-six projects received approval in the amount of $23,555 with a second round of funding scheduled for this upcoming school year. Projects most recently funded range from equipping a student broadcast studio to providing environmental projects such as an after-school

science club and a Preservation Awareness Wildlife Site. Grants continue to support and promote art education through the district-wide “Experience the Arts“ project. GJEF also places a high priority on grants that engage parents in projects such as High Point’s EC Enrichment Cluster, Lincoln’s “Math AddIt-Up–Students + Parents +Teachers = Success,“ and Goshen Lane’s “A Space and Place To Be“ neighborhood camp experience. GJEF is excited about the opportunity to empower teachers as they submit grant proposals enriching the academic experience of our students. With the generous support of our community we are able to “promote excellence.“

“The Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation has been a tremendous resource for the staff, students and families at Lincoln Elementary over the past two years. The grants have turned big ideas into reality and have empowered many teachers to take risks beyond the classroom. Middle School West science teachers Meredith Sweatland and Meri Beth Kelly used their $1,000 GJEF Grant to purchase stream monitoring equipment allowing their 7th-grade students to participate in the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Quality Monitoring Project. According to Kelly, “The Big Walnut Creek provides an exciting learning laboratory extending the classroom into the community.“ All data gathered by students pictured above using kick-seine screens is sent to ODNR for review.

Celebrate Excellence in the District! • The Lincoln High School Golden Lions Marching Band will have the distinct honor of marching alongside United Service Organization (OSU) floats, active duty and reserve military, veterans groups, NYPD and FDNY marching bands in the official Department of Defense Veterans Day parade taking place on November 11, 2006 in New York City. • The Lincoln High School (LHS) DECA Chapter attained #1 in the United States and Canada, again! For the sixth time in eight years the LHS DECA chapter ranked first among the 12,000 marketing students competing. • LHS Interact Club received a Governor’s Citation Award for their

Club Off project. Additionally, they raised $2,300 for Tomorrow’s Stars through an I-Bay project matched with Gahanna Rotary Funds. • Royal Manor Elementary students participate yearly in the Columbus Children’s Theatre writing project. Student stories from two 5thgrade and one 4th-grade class were selected to be performed in the 2006 season. • At Chapelfield Elementary, the joy of reading was emphasized through classroom activities, artwork, the annual book fair, the PTOsponsored author visit of Christopher and Jeanette Canyon, and through the publication of 500 student books. • Eighth-graders at Middle

Lincoln High School’s Theatre Department is known for their quality productions, but this year’s spring musical Les Miserables was exceptional. Community members echoed this sentiment with copious e-mails similar to this one: “…I just got home from the show. All I can say is… ’I am agog, I am aghast!’ IT WAS INCREDIBLE!“ We are looking forward to more caliber productions during this school year of 2006-07.

School West took a “field trip“ within the walls of their own auditorium visiting the Dare to Explore Lewis and Clark Museum. Ten exhibit stations with laptops and artifacts had students researching the Lewis and Clark expedition and their Corps Discovery. • “Might of Math“ week had Goshen Lane Elementary students learning about mathematicians such as Pythagoras, Euler and Pascal while completing math puzzles and problems, reading literature about math and participating in “Stop, Drop and Calculate.“ • High Point Elementary used Understanding by Design strategies with 1st-grade animal reports and 3rd-grade exploration of ecosystems and animals. All grade levels enjoyed the use of United Streaming, a video/technology streaming tool connecting children to realworld resources. • Middle School East and West hosted Japanese teachers for three weeks as part of the Institute for Japanese Studies through OSU and the Ohio Department of Education. Students in 6th- and 7th-grade classrooms heard accounts of Japanese schools, culture and language from the visiting delegates. • Middle School South hosted speaker and retired Principal Jeff Reinhard whose presentation to 6th-graders centered on “HEART“–hope, encourage, appreciate, respect and trust–to build friendships and a positive school climate.

• Fifth-graders at Lincoln Elementary became cultural ambassadors to their 1st- and 2nd-grade buddies. Completing a unit on China’s music and culture, 5thgrade groups were chosen to teach the younger students Chinese games and how to count to ten in Mandarin. • Kindergartners from Blacklick Elementary visited Blacklick Woods where a park naturalist conducted tours and helped students investigate the natural world and habitats of many local plants and animals—a fun way to meet the Ohio Academic Standards for science! • For several years, Jefferson Elementary has hosted an afterschool Kid’s Club sponsored by the PTA. The four-week series focused on fitness included classes in karate, kick-boxing, yoga and dodge ball. • Congratulations to Jeff Shellhammer, LHS instrumental music teacher, for receiving the Outstanding Music Educator Award for 2006 from the Ohio Music Education Association. • Mark Meuser, LHS math teacher and President of GJEA, was elected statewide to serve for a fouryear term on the State Teachers Retirement System Board. • Kudos to Gahanna-Jefferson District Treasurer Julio Valladares for receiving not only the prestigious Auditor’s Award for an exemplary 2004 Annual Financial Report, but the Auditor’s Award for a perfect 2003 Annual Financial Report.

“Shave A Bull, Save A Buckeye“ School Project – A Winner For All By Russ Cochrane Lincoln High School Marketing Education-DECA teacher

L

ast year, Lincoln High School (LHS) Principal Mark White approached the school's DECA Chapter to find out if they would like to run a fundraiser and spirit booster for the beginning of the 2005-06 school year. With the first-ever University of Texas and Ohio State football game scheduled for early

September, the DECA Chapter set up the “Shave a Bull, Save a Buckeye“ fundraiser to support the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation and Central Ohio Operation Feed. Principal White, a graduate of the University of Texas, and guidance counselor Jim Lewis, a big OSU supporter, agreed to have their head shaved if their favorite team lost the game and if LHS could raise $5,000 for the charities. The project was a big success

with $7,280 raised to split between the two charities and over 9,000 cans of food valued at $4,290 collected for the Operation Feed Pantry. Perhaps the bigger benefit from the project was the positive feelings that students felt from being part of a successful event that helped others. It was an exciting kick-off to a great school year. Adding to the impact, the DECA Chapter entered the charitable project in state and

international competition. The project, chaired by Austin Francis and Hanna Saraniero and presented by Jessica Angus and Michael MacLean, was selected best in the nation at the international competition in Dallas, Texas, this past May. As a result of their recognized excellence, these students representing the nationally acclaimed LHS DECA Chapter traveled to Las Vegas to appear on the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon as part of their award.

The Power of Partnerships (Did You Know…) ❖ Middle School East students partnered with Gahanna Parks & Recreation in a park clean-up project. ❖ Columbus Innis Elementary was the recipient of over 100 books donated by Middle School East to support their kindergarten reading program. ❖ Blacklick Elementary career education program was enhanced by community member participation in their Vehicle/Career Day. The K-5 program provided a unique hands-on experience for students. ❖ A big “Thank You“ to Tim Hortons for sponsoring students from Royal Manor and Goshen Lane Elementary Schools to a week-long adventure camp in Canada. ❖ Heartland Bank partnered with the G-J District showcasing artwork, providing educational materials for economic lessons, conducting mock interviews and featuring the Middle School West choir at their groundbreaking celebration. ❖ Alliance Data volunteers provided reading tutors and math enrichment support for Chapelfield Elementary students throughout the year. ❖ At the 2006 Arbor Day Celebration, Middle School South

was proclaimed a “Wild School Site“ by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. ❖ Through the Community Connections Program, Middle School South students and parents participated with local law enforcement in an Internet safety program. ❖ Fourth-grade students at Jefferson Elementary enjoyed a five-week economics unit taught by business representatives who volunteered in the Junior Achievement program. ❖ High Point Elementary hosted a Community Vendor’s Fair featuring over 30 local business representatives affiliated with the school. Upcoming plans include expanding participation in the day-long event. ❖ The “Cupcakes for Katrina“ student-initiated project at Lincoln Elementary generated a $1,000 donation to the American Red Cross. ❖ A big “Thank You“ to Barnes and Noble Booksellers for their support in G-J District reading initiatives. ❖ Each year, local business leaders and human resource professionals conduct over 500 extended mock interviews with Lincoln High School (LHS) students enrolled in the required Career Passport class.

And the real winners are! In the course of receiving national recognition, DECA students Katie Stein, Hanna Saraniero, Austin Francis and Sara Silbiger proudly display an $11,570 check reflecting total proceeds distributed to Operation Feed and the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation. Accompanying the students are (back row) area resident John Hay, director of Franklin County Operation Feed, guidance counselor Jim Lewis (proudly holding his sons Matt and Ryan) and principal Mark White who both shed their hair for the cause, and Board of Education President Ted Carr who used his barber skills to buzz a Buckeye and shear a Longhorn with students wildly cheering him on. It was a great day for Gahanna and the Lions of LHS.

“The Gahanna Area Chamber of Commerce is enjoying its increasingly close and mutually beneficial relationship with the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools. For the past two years, the Chamber’s ‘Business to Business Expo’ has been hosted by Lincoln High School. This location is not only convenient for our members to display their products and services and for the general public to attend, but it also showcases our high school and reemphasizes its importance in preparing our students for college and roles within the business community. We look forward to continuing this partnership and, in fact, have already accepted the kind invitation to conduct next year’s Business Expo again at the high school. “Whoa….that’s one awesome alligator,“ murmurs 2nd-grader Anthony Kanode of Lincoln Elementary. Peter Rushton “The Reptile Guy“ was just one of numerous guest speakers at the school’s Enrichment Day. Other classes provided by Community Partners included “$Censible Business,” “Broadcast Television,“ “Weird Science“ and much more. It was a fun and enlightening experience.

O

n behalf of my fellow cochairs, Corey Crognale, Bob Keidan, Ellen Murphy, Debra Payne and Roy Whipple and in partnership with the Finance Committee chaired by Scott McComb, I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers and, ultimately, our community for the support and passage of Issue 1 in the May election. The success of our school

levy means that every one of our children will continue to receive an excellent education at all levels in each of our schools. Additionally, it allows our superintendent and board of education to continue to hire the best candidates as well as to provide the necessary materials for all classrooms. Gahanna Schools have a tradition of excellence and have produced well-rounded and well-prepared graduates. It is refreshing to see that in all areas of our community the voters choose to continue with that tradition.

Students and staff at High Point Elementary displayed a sincere THANK YOU for the generous community support for Issue 1. Each building across the district joined in extending the message as they also expressed their appreciation to the voters with signs and banners.

LHS Hall of Fame Welcomes Honorees By Mary Otting Communications Specialist

O

ur 2006 Alumni Hall of Fame recipients and their varied experiences will provide unique inspiration and leadership for Lincoln High School graduates! We extend our congratulations to these three honorees. Violinist Daniel Mason, a 1969 LHS graduate, has concretized throughout the United States and Europe, gaining distinguished recognition both as a soloist and as a Chamber musician. Mason is currently in his 23rd year as a professor of violin and head of the String Department at the University of Kentucky. Also director of the University of Kentucky String Project, he received a $100,000 grant from the American String Teachers Association to train string teachers while providing affordable instruction to more than 100 area children. Yolanda Harris, a 1988 alumnus, is one of the most recognized personalities in Columbus, Ohio, as co-anchor for NewsCenter ABC-6 TV and FOX-28 TV. Harris received a B.S. in Broadcast

Journalism from Bowling Green State University, became a print journalist/reporter for the Call & Post Newspaper, and then advanced in broadcasting from hosting “Fox28 Kids Club“ to evening anchor. Harris has given back to her alma mater collaborating with television students on promotional videos and emceeing the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation Gala. LHS alum from 1963, Gary Kitsmiller, attended The Ohio State University for an undergraduate degree in business and served two years in the United States Army winning the Commendation Medal among other honors. Kitsmiller’s entire career was with The Ohio State University development program where private gift support grew from $3 million to $200 million annually. In 2004, he retired as Assistant Vice President for Development; Ohio State is perennially ranked in the top ten among public universities in annual gift support. Kitsmiller is also recognized for his extensive involvement and dynamic leadership in civic service to the Gahanna community.
