Candidates / Valedictorian A B O U T O U R 2 0 1 3 VA L E D I C T O R I A N : REBECCA LEHMANN Rebecca Lehmann, a resident of Lumberton, will graduate with highest honors. She will be awarded the Associate of Science degree. Rebecca joined the BCC family after graduating from Rancocas Valley High School. Because of her academic achievements in high school, she was awarded a New Jersey STARS Scholarship to attend Burlington County College. Here at BCC, Rebecca has consistently earned a spot on the Dean’s list each semester and she was a natural to be inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Rebecca thoroughly enjoyed the BCC sponsored bus trips to New York City where she was inspired by the music of Broadway. Rebecca pursued her love of the arts outside the college walls as well, studying voice and piano at the Perkins Center for the Arts.

Rebecca made use of all of the resources at Burlington County College, including finding time for daily workouts using her free student membership at the YMCA. In addition to her studies and being focused on her health and wellness, Rebecca also works as a server at Seasons 54 in Cherry Hill and is a volunteer within her religious organization. Her hobbies include studying language and cultures from around the world. Rebecca was recently awarded the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship which she will combine with her NJ STARS II funding in the fall. In September, Rebecca will continue her studies at Rutgers Camden School of Business where she will pursue dual degrees in Accounting and Finance.

Forty-Third Annual Commencement Exercises ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER: ROCHELLE HENDRICKS New Jersey’s first secretary of higher education, Rochelle Hendricks, has more than 20 years of experience working on education issues in the Garden State. Appointed to the Cabinet-level post by Governor Chris Christie in May, Secretary Hendricks had served previously as acting commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Education, having been named to that post in August 2010. Prior to that assignment, Secretary Hendricks had served in the Department of Education as assistant commissioner for the Division of School Effectiveness and Choice, overseeing key reform initiatives and areas, including the Offices of Board Development, Small Learning Communities and School Culture, District Schools, Turnaround Partnerships, Inter-District Choice and Opportunity Scholarships, Charter Schools, Career and Technical Education, and Online Education. She had also served in the Department of Education in various other capacities, working as director of the Professional Development Office, manager of the Office of Policy and Planning in the Administration Division, assistant to the deputy education commissioner, and director of the Office of Vocational-Technical, Career and Innovative Programs. Prior to joining the staff of the Department of Education, she worked for over 15 years at Princeton University in numerous capacities, including assistant dean of students, director of the Educational Opportunities Program, and interim director of the Women’s Program. Secretary Hendricks began her career as a teacher in the Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School District before joining the Department of Education in 1987.

Honor Society has developed opportunities for leadership and service, and has provided an intellectual climate for continued academic excellence. Additionally, on the occasion of their graduation, members wear the Honor Society stole. Chi Iota, Burlington County College’s chapter, recognizes its members at this graduation with the gold stole.

Professor of the Year and More P R O J E C T G R A D U AT I O N Project Graduation is a national Phi Theta Kappa project that was created at Burlington County College in 1998. Project Graduation encourages students to bring canned goods and children’s books to the graduation ceremony. The items collected are donated to community service

agencies at a time of the year when food banks are often low and bookshelves are empty. Project Graduation enables our graduating class to say “thank you” to the community whose tax dollars helped provide for the students’ education.

LI N D B AC K D I S T I N G U I S H E D T E AC H I N G AWA R D The purpose of this award is to honor faculty members for their commitment to teaching excellence and to their students. The award is now presented every other year at the commencement ceremony. The recipient receives a commemorative plaque and a check in the amount of $4,000. This award is made possible by a generous grant from the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation. Faculty are selected for this award on the basis of outstanding performance in the classroom, innovation in teaching, and a commitment to their students beyond the walls of the classroom. This may include a role as an advisor to a student organization, service as a mentor to students who are seeking career guidance, or leadership in the introduction of new technologies or teaching methods at BCC.

Forty-Third Annual Commencement Exercises ACADEMIC REGALIA The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute in 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the fourteenth century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. Gowns may have been considered

necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. When American colleges and universities desired to adopt some suitable system of academic apparel, it seemed to them best to agree on some definite system which all might follow. Accordingly, a suitable code of academic dress for the colleges and universities of the United States was established.

GOWNS Pattern:

Pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, long closed sleeves for the master’s degree (slit for the arm) and round open sleeves for the doctor’s degree.

Color:

Black. Some universities now use their colors.

Trimmings:

None for the bachelor’s or master’s. For the doctor’s degree the gown is to be faced down the front with black velvet with three bars of the same across the sleeves; or these bars may be of velvet of the color distinctive of the faculty or subject to which the degree pertains.
