Ordinary But Not Average It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great. — Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), “A League of Their Own” [1992] Each year, I have the distinct privilege of notifying our award winners of the previous year. I love talking to them. Everyone has a story and I enjoy hearing about the sacrifices they made, the obstacles they overcame and what they learned about themselves along the way. In all my years of talking with our top producers, I can honestly say that not once have I heard anyone say, “Roger, it was smooth sailing; a cinch. I did the bare minimum that was required of me and before I knew it, I was Number One.” Just as it is in the rest of life, you reap what you sow in your career with AIL/NILICO/UHL. You get out of it what you put into it — when you put passion and hard work in, you earn the rewards of financial success and recognition. Successful people instinctively know this, and that’s what spurs them to go above and beyond what is expected of them. They are ordinary people — but they are anything but average — determined to do extraordinary things. Think of Olympic athletes. They are ordinary in every way but not average in any way. They surround themselves with other people who refuse to be average and who want to win as badly as they do. They know what it takes to reach the level of competition they will face in the Olympics. They are at the top of their game because they consistently go above and beyond in their quest for gold. “Good” is never good enough. They are willing to do what others are not. Many work at regular jobs in addition to training in their sport. Some have compelling stories of hard work, discipline, sacrifice and sometimes even unspeakable tragedy. Overcoming adversity makes Olympic victory that much sweeter.
Let’s face it: if winning were easy, everyone would be a winner. Surrounding oneself with excellence, possessing a clear vision for the future and crafting a plan to achieve it that goes beyond what others are willing to do — that’s a recipe for success. Just ask our #1 Individual Producer of 2013, Mark Neilson (see pages 20-21). Mark, who has been coached by some of AIL’s finest, literally mapped out the entire year on his calendar. He knew exactly where he’d be and what he’d be doing every day of the year. He hit the ground running and was off to an amazing start. But “stuff ” happens to the best of us, and Mark was not immune. He admits to having a couple of months where he lost focus… and it showed in his numbers. But he refocused, fought to regain his momentum, and finished the year at the top in spite of the setback. He attributes his end-of-year victory to his strong start back when the year was young. Mark, I commend you for your hard work, for not giving up, for not making excuses when that would have been the easy thing to do. I want to congratulate all of our 2013 top producers. I look forward to honoring you onstage in San Francisco. And if you are not among this year’s award winners, there is still time to decide to practice excellence in the same way Olympic athletes give their all every run, every match, every performance. You never know when YOUR best could be THE best.
There is a growing need for ambitious leaders. AIL/NILICO is looking for MGAs and GAs wanting to pursue the SGA Career Track. If you are interested, speak to your SGA, then send an email to:

It takes more than championship material to make an Olympian agent. The agent still has to do the hard work in the field, but what goes on outside of the field is just as important.

Champions are agents who are truly the best and who have a gradual building process of: 1. Clearly defined ALP goals 2. Clearly defined activity plan of appointments, presentations, sales etc. 3. Clearly defined desire to win the title We are a company where a debuting agent can come up against the long-time champion, and yet win the fight. Everything is possible with mathematics and a competitive spirit. Couple that with consistent, on going training and you have the recipe for an Olympian American/ National Incomer in the making. An AIL/NILICO/UHL Olympian Agent is someone who believes he/she can win. Their mind and outlook have an incredible impact on their results. They have already identified their natural talents and merged them with knowledge, skill and motivation. That’s why they win every week.
best way to “The forecast the future is to create it. ” They don’t get disheartened when they experience setbacks, but they keep trying until their time comes because they understand that success is inevitable. They know that the best way to forecast the future is to create it. When they win, they always congratulate the others in the competition and respect them for their efforts and most importantly, they know how to have fun. The AIL/NILCO/UHL Olympic team is open to anyone who wants to be an Olympian. Work hard, have fun, dig deep, stretch and Dream Big!!
They are disciplined because they don’t like to experience the pain of disappointment. They can develop a plan and follow it to the end, making adjustments if needed along the way. They practice. That’s why they are perfect.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: The MGA Agent Retention Bonus rewards MGAs with Agents on their team who write $4,000 Net ALP monthly in months 4-6 of their tenure. Here’s how it works: If an Agent in MGA hierarchy writes a minimum of $4,000 Net ALP in the 4th month of tenure, the MGA gets $250 bonus; in the 5th month, the MGA gets $500 bonus; in the 6th month, the MGA gets $1,000 bonus. All qualifiers listed achieved at least $500 in bonus totals.

Champions What is it that separates champions from the rest of the crowd? It’s having the dream, believing in the dream and doing the work it takes to realize that dream. Whether it is the Super Bowl champions, Olympic champions or AIL/NILICO/UHL’s own champions, remaining static is not in their makeup. Making it to the top, becoming the title holder, the winner, the champ, who takes the gold, takes talent, drive, vision and being tough enough to finish the contest. You can be assured that our top Individual Producer for 2013, our top Sales Director, SGA, RGA, MGA, GA, SA, PR Director, PR Manager and PR Rep are not satisfied with status quo or a good-enough-is-goodenough attitude. Laser focus on a goal and fighting to reach that goal is what makes champions. These champions hold the title of the best in their category. That’s something to crow about. But is it enough? Is there another level to reach? Of course, there will be. Champions don’t rest on their laurels. They reset, recharge, refocus and dream all over again. So what does it take to push status quo and doubt to the side and reach for what has never been done before? According to a few of the players in the recent Super Bowl XLVIII, “It takes playing with no regrets,” “It’s about living the dream” and “Being able to see the victory.” Translated for us; have a vision, set your plan in motion and don’t look back. Be consistent day in and day out and keep momentum on your side. There is no room for negative self talk, but there is always room to say “Yes” to setting your personal bar high enough to be challenging. Champion is a state of mind. A champion competes from within as much as with others. Champions will strive to be better than their current best. Certainly, a champion experiences setbacks somewhere along their path to greatness, but it’s the ability to come back and to achieve that sets champions apart from others.

After interviewing 15 of the country’s top motivational speakers, Michael Jefferys put together a list of 8 success secrets. These 8 “secrets” are: 1. Take 100 percent responsibility for your life. 2. Live your life “on purpose.” 3. Be willing to pay the price for your dreams. 4. Stay focused. 5. Become an expert in your field. 6. Write out a plan for achieving your goals. 7. Never give up. 8. Don’t delay. I believe that our 2013 Champions know and live each of these 8 secrets to success.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Martin Groves Vice President of Field Operations
Leadership 101 Kicks off 2014 Training Opps Eighty-six SAs and newly appointed GAs visited the McKinney Conference Center January 27-29 for the first Leadership Academy session of 2014.
Being a WINNER
Vice President of Field Operations Steve Kafkis led the information-packed session that featured members of AIL’s management team as well as Agency leaders David Ackerman, Chris Lussier and Theo Pappas.
It is exciting to see the list of winners who will receive their awards at this year’s Convention in San Francisco. It is also great to see just how many people qualified to be at convention. They are all “WINNERS” at our Company.
Day One focused on various aspects of recruiting, including how to use social media for maximum results and strategies for personal recruiting. The emphasis on Day Two was leadership and accountability. Day Three’s presentations addressed how to assemble and grow an effective team.
What makes these people so unique? Overcoming Obstacles Many successful people at not only overcome obstacles easily, they don’t even see some of the challenges as obstacles at all. What they do see is an unlimited opportunity, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. This relentless attitude and determination can also be more powerful than years of education, gaining diplomas, degrees and PHDs. Watch someone overcome obstacles easily in their early tenure at AIL/NILICO/UHL and you could be looking at an up-and-coming star! Overcoming obstacles easily is a key indicator!
Your next opportunity to attend Leadership Academy will be Leadership 301 (Top Gun) March 17-19. If you’re interested, talk to your SGA to see if you qualify and how to register.
Our Opportunity Unlimited is as true today as it was the day Bernard Rapoport founded the Company, perhaps even more so because of the years of incredible relationships we have founded with the many Unions, Associations and Credit Unions. What is their WHY? It’s great to ask new and tenured agents what their “WHY” is. When talking about motivation in a career, I have always been surprised at the variety of answers to this question. Invariably it will boil down to earnings potential but it has been many reasons through my years in the insurance industry.
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. ” — John F. Kennedy

• Everyone NEEDS and thrives on recognition apart from money. They believe they will be recognized as the best.
• They want to make a certain level of income because they want to be more giving to charities and philanthropic interests. • They NEED to make a certain level of income due to health issues in the family such as cancer, treatments, etc. • Someone may want to prove a point to a family member that they can become more successful than another. (One guy I asked just wanted to show his father that he could earn more in a year than his father ever did!) The “WHY” can be a great focal point for any leader to use as motivation for someone’s career path. In some cases, the “natural born winners” have a work ethic much higher than anyone else, so it’s natural that they would rise to the top. When looking at the habits of WINNERS, you will typically see 5 main traits rise to the top every time. 1. They have a goal. Convention is a great goal to aim for. Not many people get to travel to the great destinations we offer, and not only themselves but a loved one, or significant other. 2. They have a reason. Having a goal in mind is only one part of the story. WINNERS have a reason behind their goals. They know their purpose behind achieving their goals. It may be the competition in the agency that is the driving force. Recognition and the prestige of winning is infectious in our agencies and being a “Top Performer” ranks high in the reason to win! 3. They have support. It is easy to give up on your goals unless you have support. Winners normally associate themselves with likeminded people or agents in their agency. Our top performers surround themselves with other WINNERS especially from their agency. Therefore, the support group gets stronger and stronger. In our business we have a great many people assisting us to be successful and the top performers will usually have a driving force behind them. 4. They spend their time wisely. Time is a precious resource when you are in a winning mindset. Our WINNERS have to dedicate themselves and structure their time wisely to meet their weekly and monthly objectives. You will not find many of our Top Performers who waste time on things that do not contribute something to meeting their goals. 5. They NEVER give up. It’s hard to win the first time out. Winners normally win fast, then fail, then win again. Winning is exciting, becomes habit forming and knowing you are on target each week and each month to win the prize creates the desire to never give up on your goals. Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is everything. — Vince Lombardi Great job, everyone, and I look forward to seeing you all in San Francisco.

Without a true purpose and a true passion for fulfilling that purpose, even the greatest actions and ideas will fade. Purpose is what drives us. It’s what wakes us up early when we are tired, keeps us up late when we are feeling done, and keeps us moving when we feel like we can’t go anything further.
with appreciation for you and the job you did protecting that family member. They probably won’t know you, and you’ll probably never meet them, but you significantly impacted that family for the better. You are a life changer. A generation changer. Don’t ever forget it or short change yourself.
Purpose is the true fuel to a fire.
The names on your daily schedule sheet are a list of lives you can impact, and families you can help and change. Have you ever heard a story of a family on hard times and felt compelled to give and help them? It would be nice to just show up with a six-figure check and give it to someone you care about who needs help, but that’s not always easy to do. However, when you walk into a home, that’s exactly what you are doing. You’re walking into one of the worst moments in that family’s history with a check; you’re just doing it in advance.
As I’m writing this, the Winter Olympics are being held in Russia. It’s amazing to watch what many of these athletes are capable of. Their physical performance and endurance is top notch. It’s also amazing to see how ordinary they really are — not ordinary in a negative sense, like boring or not special — but ordinary in the sense that they are, for the most part, just people you see every day doing amazing things. They look like people we know. They come from areas like where we are from. They often have careers outside of competing in their sport. But these ordinary people are now competing in front of the world for the highest achievement in their game. What drove them past that point which stopped so many others in their path? Purpose. The same is here at AIL and NILICO. Purpose will drive you to long-term success. Purpose will push through what could otherwise be challenges. Purpose will keep you focused on the end goal, not the immediate challenge. Finding your purpose and feeding it daily is crucial. For me, you can find purpose from two places. First, purpose comes from your client’s homes. What you do really does matter. There is going to come a time in someone’s life, maybe 30 or 40 years from now, where they are going to be overwhelmed
The second purpose comes from your home. Whatever level of success you’re striving to achieve, keep it with you in the field. The success you can bring to your own home, family, and name is a strong and driving purpose. In this company, you don’t just leave a legacy for the families you serve, you have the ability to leave a lasting legacy for your family for generations to come. When you leave your house in the morning, you are withdrawing time from your family, time you will never get back. Use that time to get the biggest return possible. The actions you take in your work, not the amount of time you’re physically at work, create your return. Two extra phone calls, a few more door knocks, booking an appointment from the house, all the great ideas you’ve heard won’t take any extra time from you. But they will give you a bigger return on your investment. Whatever it is, find your purpose. It will fuel you to levels of success you haven’t even dreamed of yet.

In a way, Mark Neilson’s rise to AIL’s #1 Individual Producer for 2013 was an inevitable product of his environment at the Altig-Orlovic Agency. Surrounding oneself with excellence the likes of last year’s #1 Individual Producer Alan Sedaghat, $2 million producer Tim Cruise and vying neck-in-neck with friend and rival Ryan Kendl helped bring out the best in Mark. Mark was also a man with a plan… a very specific plan. “I wrote out my plan for the entire year on my calendar. I knew exactly where I’d be, what I’d be doing every single week.” Laying out a solid plan and executing it is not a new concept to Mark, whose same careful planning and focus propelled him to break the all-time single month ALP record in October of 2012.

“ We’ve
been proud of Mark for so long in the way he conducts himself on a daily basis, the way he leads by example, and of course for breaking the all-time monthly production record with over $95,000 ALP a little over a year ago. We are especially proud of Mark this year for achieving the pinnacle of success — #1 Producer in the world! Mark is a leader of leaders, he is smart, poised, and Mark is a man of high integrity.
I FELT LIKE I COULD DO IT AND WANTED TO PROVE IT.

Contracted 3/4/09 MGA 9/23/09 RGA 4/26/10 Founders Club 10/12 Presidents Club 2012 & 2013 2013 Net ALP $346,861
Despite his record-breaking month, Mark finished the year in the #11 spot. He was “frustrated and decided I needed to be more consistent in 2013.” It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. He calls 2013 a “weird year,” in which he “lost a bit of focus.” Fortunately, Mark had started the year strongly and in the last quarter was able to recover, refocus, recommit and rally. When asked how he stays motivated, Mark admits that it was originally the money that drove him. These days, he says it’s more about recognition and meeting his own expectations. Mark says he also finds it helpful that fiancée Miranda Mortensen, herself an American Incomer, is very supportive.
She worked with him in 2013 and met her own goal of qualifying for Convention in San Francisco. We offer our heartiest congratulations on your achievement, Mark. See you onstage in San Francisco! Mark has sound advice for those aspiring to the elite ranks of top producers: • Plan ahead for the entire year. Take into account vacations, birthdays, holidays, etc. — those times that you know won’t be as productive. Keep in mind that there will always be unexpected circumstances that may cause you to get off track, so… • Start BIG. Plan on the 1st Quarter being HUGE. This gets your momentum going and sets you up to expect to see yourself at the top. This is not only self-motivating, but can also help you when those unexpected circumstances occur when you don’t meet the production goals you have set for yourself. “It’s a lot easier to start big than to have to play catch-up later.”
Mark is a textbook example of taking a talented individual and surrounding them with the best in the business. RGA Nick Lorence recruited and initially trained Mark in Utah. Ryan Kendl invested a lot of time into developing Mark’s early potential and is so proud. Plus, Mark was coached by the $2 million man himself, Tim Cruise. In the four years Mark has been with the Company, his impact has been huge. He was right by Nick Lorence’s side in training agents in Utah, then in Northern California, and again in Washington. For someone who is #1 in the world for personal results, Mark’s true legacy is his on-going commitment to investing in the development of agents all over the Company. This year, his passion ignited a fire through the whole organization, ultimately leading to 7 of the top 10 being from Altig-Orlovic. On behalf of the entire organization, thank you, Mark, for all you do and congratulations on this tremendous achievement. We know the best is yet to come.”

State General Agents
Spotlight recognizes State General Agents in Categories I-VIII with minimum 10% growth and 80% of First Six Month Net ALP Objective; SGAs with less than 12 months tenure in CAT I-VIII will be ranked with 100% of objective or above and are not eligible for YTD awards; and the top Net ALP Producer in both the Start-Up and Rookie Categories. YTD Winners for Categories I-VIII will be recognized at Convention by adding both their YTD Growth % and their YTD F6 Net ALP Obj and the YTD Spotlight number may not necessarily reflect that computation. SGAs
