Mission The mission of the SPCA is to create a caring and kind community that encourages fair and humane treatment of all creatures. Our knowledgeable, caring, and openminded team of staff and volunteers achieves that mission through proactive efforts to address the current status of animals in our community, education of adults and children, rescue and sheltering of animals in need, and placement of animals into appropriate homes. The SPCA Serving Erie County is a proud partner of the Maddie’s® Pet Rescue Project in Erie County.

In 2009, Maddie’s Fund® awarded the SPCA and six other local animal rescue organizations a grant of $5 million, payable over the course of five years. The goal was to create one of our country’s first no-kill communities. Together with Black Dog, Second Chance, the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter, HEART Animal Rescue & Adoption Team, Inc., Second Chance Sheltering Network, and Ten Lives Club and Operation Pets, a spay/neuter clinic for low-income residents, we achieved this goal in late 2013. The work was not easy and our community and thousands of people worked tirelessly to reach this important goal. Employees of our organization and others did more than they ever thought possible for homeless pets . . . Thousands of people opened up their homes to provide foster care for pets before they were placed for adoption . . . Volunteers spent countless weekends at events to adopt out pets into new, loving homes . . . Large community events were organized and staffed by employees and volunteers . . . And lastly, thousands of people welcomed new pets into their lives from the partners of the Maddie’s® Pet Rescue Project in Erie County. And it all paid off. We are proud to say that Erie County is one of the first counties in the United States to rescue and rehome all healthy, treatable, and manageable animals. Not only has the SPCA spearheaded the efforts to see this goal to fruition, but through collaborative initiatives with our partner organizations within our community, we have helped them all reach their true potential to create a life-saving community. Therefore it is not only our agency that has reached this goal, but all agencies throughout Erie County, making us a true no-kill community. Over the past five years, project partners have been able to increase adoptions by more than 2,000 animals, total euthanasia has declined by 52% and the 1,700 healthy and treatable animals that were euthanized by the SPCA in 2007 are now being saved through medical care, fostering and augmented adoption programs. We couldn’t have done it alone and we thank everyone who made this dream become a reality. It is truly astonishing to see how far we have come in just five short years! Board of Directors In 2009, the SPCA announced a five-year, $5 million partnership with Maddie’s Fund® and other animal rescue groups in Erie County. This grant was to be used to work within the community to reach the goal of placing each and every one of our county’s healthy and treatable homeless animals in new homes. During the past five years, we have administered the grant and have not just helped our organization reach this goal, but have been successful in helping five other groups, including the Buffalo City Animal Shelter, reach this goal. In addition to this amazing achievement, we committed to seeing that 17,000 cats were spayed over the five years through the administration of that part of the grant by Operation Pets. We reached our goals well over a year ago, and it wasn’t just the grant from Maddie’s Fund that got us there; it was YOU, our donors and volunteers who made this possible. When I first announced this grant in 2009, I said that there were seven partners in this project — YOU, our community, were the seventh partner. You have been a great partner and I will never be able to thank you enough.

The grant will come to an end soon and the level of work we have done to meet our goals will continue. We will continue to call on you to be an active partner in maintaining the lifesaving work we are currently doing. And as you have already demonstrated, we know you will be there to support our work every day. But of course it is not just me that is counting on you – there are thousands and thousands of animals whose lives are saved through your hard work and generosity. Maintaining the level of care needed to maintain our success is timeconsuming and costly. I thank you in advance for your continued, generous support.

found her and called us for help. Our emergency animal rescue driver rushed right over to assist.

Each month, the SPCA cares for approximately 30 animals in need of extensive medical care because of illness, injury, or abuse. The SPCA is only able to assist these animals and give them a second chance thanks to contributions to our Yelp for Help Fund.

Poor Ellie must have been hit head first, because her jaw was broken; her eyes, nose, and mouth were completely filled with blood; and her eyes were swollen. Ellie was rushed back to the shelter infirmary, where veterinarians wired her jaw, put her on fluids, nebulized her, put her on pain meds and antibiotics, and gave her a pain patch. Miracle of miracles, Ellie pulled through thanks to the efforts of the alert community member, our veterinary staff, and of course, our Yelp for Help donors.

SPCA Veterinary Staff Looks Back at Their Maddie’s Fund® Journey Back in 2009, many thought that what we wanted to accomplish with the help of Maddie’s Fund® seemed almost unobtainable. Through hard work (and many hours of over-time!), we’ve achieved our goal of not euthanizing any healthy and treatable animals! Recently, SPCA Veterinary Services Manager Debby Williams and Veterinary Technician Robin Richard discussed what was done so this goal could be met. What have you seen change the most since 2009? Debby: We definitely perform less euthanasia, which we’re obviously happy about. We perform more medical treatments on animals that would have been euthanized before 2009.

Robin: We work with animals that require more intense medical treatments. We perform more crucial care on animals. Debby: There are more animals that require IV fluids. More animals are given x-rays. We perform more dental work. Robin: We also do more blood work and the veterinary team performs more invasive surgeries. We do a lot more amputations than we ever did before. And the money from Maddie’s Fund also allowed us to send a dog to a veterinarian who specializes in ears to perform an ear ablation surgery (the surgery removes the diseased and/or infected ear canal and leaves the inner ear in place), on a dog that also had a heart condition. Debby, how has your department grown since 2009? Debby: In 2009, we had two veterinarians and now we have three. (We hired a part-time veterinarian to perform spay/ neuter surgeries, but who now does a little bit of everything!) In 2009, we had ten veterinary technicians and now we have eighteen full-time and eight part-time veterinary technicians. We also have four part-time veterinary assistants. The assistants help us by putting in medical notes in the computer system, thereby freeing up the veterinary technicians’ time so they spend more time working on and with our patients. Robin, how is your time used now vs. how it was used before 2009? Robin: Like Debby said, there certainly are more medical notes that need to be put into our system! There are more observations of medical treatments, meaning a few times each day we check on and treat sick animals and we take notes on how each animal is doing right on their kennel card. We make more phone calls to adopters to just check in and make sure their new pet is doing well. There are now more foster-toadopt animals, and we may call or have these foster parents come in and answer any questions they may have. We are also adopting out more animals with medical issues, so that means we often have to go and speak with adopters while they’re in the shelter about the animal. And in case you couldn’t tell, there’s definitely a lot more multi-tasking going on! We really run a lot more like a veterinary hospital now.

Explain that. What do you mean that you’re run more like a veterinary hospital? Debby: I think what Robin is trying to say is that we are in the exact same small infirmary as we were before, but we’ve seen an increase of animals that are sick and injured while we’re still trying to operate as an animal shelter. For example, we are doing a lot of invasive surgeries, amputations, helping animals that have been hit by cars, eye surgeries, and taking out masses, all while also accepting animals that the public is surrendering. It can definitely be challenging! Robin: Agreed! What kind of things do we treat now that we didn’t before? Robin: We used to euthanize dogs that had the highly contagious parvovirus, but now we are able to treat dogs that come in with parvo thanks to the help of local veterinarians. We now treat animals with ringworm, thyroid issues, some internal diseases, and paralysis. We never treated those things in the past.

Debby: We also treat cats that have urinary issues. We treated a dog that was in a house fire and had 90% of her body burned. Because she was in such bad shape, I think we would have undoubtedly euthanized her because there’s no question she was in a lot of pain at first and we didn’t know if she would pull through. We generally didn’t make blind animals available for adoption, but now we do. Maddie’s Fund has given us all so many reasons to be thankful!

We embarked on a no-kill journey and in your estimations, how have we done it? Debby: We’ve been able to spend more time on each critically ill or sick animal, which takes up a lot of time, but obviously, it’s been worth it. I’d also say that we’ve been helped so incredibly much by local breed rescue organizations. They’ve helped us save lives, too! Robin: I’d have to say we’ve had to be ready for anything at any time! We never ever know who’s going to walk through the doors needing care.
