Virtual Reality: From Star Wars to Minority Report
We adults do not play enough. Either Sascha Wolter is an exception, or he always remained a child inside. The M2M specialist develops his new ideas in his two children‘s room, with Lego bricks or old toys that he finds at flea markets. A Raspberry Pi, a few sensors, a camera and lots of Lego blocks – and there you have a vehicle that can be controlled via iPhone app and that will call its creator when driving too close to a wall. That is the reality of the fourth revolution: No expensive prototypes, no business cases, no business models. Only a crafts corner, the infantile ideas of innovation and the unmatched honesty of a child as a proof-of-concept. Wolter calls this work „creative finding“ or „creation of needs“. In his opinion, sustainable innovations with real benefits are in demand. In his experiments, he encounters ideas that flow into his work at the Deutsche Telekom in the area Connected Home. In his keynote „Ditch Constraints and Finally Start (Connecting YOUR World of Things)!“ Wolter responds to this creative process. Learn in an amusing and catchy presentation how to distance yourself from complexity, regulations and fears, and how to engage in shaping the fourth revolution. Thursday: Ditch Constraints and Finally Start (Connecting YOUR World of Things)!

In-Memory: „As Simple as Creating an Index“ Tirthankar Lahiri is the Oracle Vice President of the Oracle teams Data Technologies and TimesTen. It was his team who developed the new In-Memory option for the Oracle database. He has nineteen years of experience in Oracle database organization and holds 18 patents. In his keynote speech he will introduce Oracle‘s In-Memor y database strategy. Three questions for Tirthankar Lahiri: Who should use the In-Memory option? The main target group is companies who want to process large amounts of data analytically in a very short time, i.e. data warehouses or data marts. This includes large OLTP environments. The In-Memory option is also ideal for applications such as PeopleSoft or Siebel CRM, which also have extensive analytical requirements. What is the crucial difference between TimesTen and the database In-Memory option? TimesTen focuses on OLTP processing without large time delays, i.e. transactions that take place within microseconds. The database In-Memory option is more adapted to high capacity data processing than to the time delay. Both solutions use the main memory, but in different ways. The advantage of TimesTen is that the entire database can be embedded in the application and therefore omits the client-server communication over the network. Tirthankar Lahiri

The In-Memory option runs within the database focusing on extremely fast queries. How much expertise is required in order to use the In-Memory option effectively? A database user will quickly know how to work with it. It‘s as simple as creating an index. You just have to release the memory and select the table to be processed with In-Memory. No changes are required, neither for the application nor for the data structure for the In-Memory option.

When he was seven years old, his father took him to see the first „Star Wars“ movie. That was in 1978. Ever since, Jörg Osarek has had a thing for cool laser swords, the druids and projections. What then followed was inevitable: An examination of 3D computer graphics in the 80s and a career as an Oracle specialist. For more than three decades, the computer scientist has observed how George Lucas‘ ideas have gradually left the cradle of science fiction to rank in technological feasibility. Even Princess Leah‘s hologram will soon be more than the idea of an artistic genius: Japanese researchers are able to generate floating 3D holograms. „Virtual Reality“ (VR) has quietly crept into our world. In some areas, it has long been established. Google Street View and flight simulators are examples. Osarek has been dealing with the topic for a long time himself: In 1998 he held his first lecture at the DOAG annual conference. Back then, him and others had just developed a Second Life precursor. The 3D world was generated dynamically from an Oracle database. More than 15 years later, he‘s offering an update. Meanwhile, he has gathered some new technology in his basement: 3D sensors, VR headsets, 3D cameras... just to name a few. Whether „Virtual Reality“ or „Internet of Things“, these trends require a new analysis discipline: immersive analytics.
This type of analysis is interesting for the computer games industry, for example. To make the gaming experience for their customers as real as possible, they need detailed information on how they use different media. In „Customer Relationship“, profiling will play an important role to distinguish conscious and unconscious customer preferences. This is particularly interesting for insurances and health insurance companies. The analysis of this data provides unexpected and great opportunities. With that, we are approaching the next big step towards a science-fiction scenario: ‚Minority Report‘, Osarek points out. Thursday: Virtual Reality Analytics

„Without a Mobile Strategy You Don‘t Have a Strategy“ Grant Ronald is the Director of Product Management in the field „Oracle Mobility and Development Tools“. At the conference, he describes the challenges associated with implementing a mobile strategy. Three questions for Grant Ronald: What fascinates you about mobile? What I find fascinating about mobile is how the simple evolution from a regular landline phone has had such a dramatic and far reaching impact – well beyond the ability to make a mobile phone call. A few years back, who would have believed a company would come along and totally shake up the taxi business in major cities all because of a mobile application. Which challenges are presented by mobile? Mobile is an exciting area with a lot of bright new talent doing amazingly cool things with mobile technology. However, the reality is that many businesses are moving at a more pedestrian pace, carrying the burden of old and existing systems. We need to work on bringing these two efforts together whether that is through products, technology or even just winning hearts and minds that change can be good. What would you recommend developers who want to focus on mobile Oracle technologies? At Oracle, my team and I have been working on new and engaging ways to tell people how to successfully use our products. Recently we launched a channel on YouTube (www.youtube.com/OracleMobilePlatform) where we are using a lot of new learning techniques to help train people on Oracle Mobile Cloud.

Careers & Strategy Cats and Dogs The former mathematics professor and IBM „Chief Technology Officer“ Gunter Dueck has encountered both the manager and the techie side during his professional life. In his keynote, he addresses the „Welfare of People“ and philosophizes about the human differences. Mr. Dueck, why does it appear that managers and techies do not speak the same language? There is a big cultural difference between managers and computer scientists: Managers follow methods and approaches; they brainstorm a lot and in general they have a very methodical approach. They start with creating a presentation and a business case, apply for loans and meet procedural requirements. Computer scientists, however, are not into all that planning and preparing. In short, computer scientists focus on content, while managers concentrate on the packaging. Your Keynote will be about the „Welfare of People“. What does their „welfare“ look like? To me, „keeping people‘s welfare“ means that a boss will not force their own management style onto others. This requires that they look at each employee individually and think about how they treat them and what tasks they can entrust them with in order for them to like their work. For example, if you have someone on the team who is only interested in when they can go home and how many tasks they have to complete by then, then you cannot designate them to develop a vision for the next decade. That will not work. To make it pictorially clear, I like to compare managers to dogs: They feel comfortable as a pack in meetings, they like planning and creating PowerPoint presentations. In contrast, computer scientists resemble lonely hunting cats: They are
highly concentrated and tinker for hours, until they suddenly have an idea. Oracle or IBM are cats reservations. But when cats are managed by dogs, misunderstandings are inevitable. Basically you have to teach people to have a bit more love for animals. As what would you consider yourself, are you more of a dog or cat? I‘m definitely a cat! „Just do it!“
Beginners Welcome!
She is a member of the „Oak Table Network“ and known for her extensive work with the „Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c“ (OEM). The native Canadian Kellyn Pot‘Vin-Gorman lives by the motto: „Fall seven times, get up eight times.“ Three questions for the Oracle employee:
With workshops for ADF and APEX beginners (see page 7) and more than fifteen entry-level lectures packed with basic knowledge on the Oracle database, the conference will prepare you well for your professional life. We have asked the database specialist Martin Klier about his presentation „Oracle Core for beginners – the Alert Log“.
What is your secret of success? Initiative has great power and you should just DO without hesitation. Small things become big accomplishments when combined with initiative. Why did you choose to specialize in the Enterprise Manager? It started to become apparent to me that it would become the center of the Oracle universe. Due to the misperception of what the OEM is, many of the best DBAs in the world weren’t investing time in it. It was clear to me that if they were having challenges, it could easily be assumed that the community would as well. You will give a lecture on “The Power of the AWR Warehouse and Beyond”. What is the fascination all about? Since 10g, DBAs have been using AWR mining to answer very specific questions about the database environment and performance. To offload all of this data and retain it even indefinitely is an amazing opportunity to answer questions that once remained a mystery. The ETL for the AWR Warehouse is simple and clean. The offloaded data is in the original format it was in the source database, so only simple additions are required of AWR mining queries to make them AWR Warehouse compliant.
How did you enter the database issue? I didn‘t take the classic path to enter the database issue. My entry was based on high availability and system clusters. My first real love was the Real Application Cluster. Why a lecture for beginners? It’s difficult to excite people when your topic isn‘t about cool apps or front-end stories. The database is not really cool, but only at first glance. In order to help a beginner through this first threshold, it is important to bring along some time and patience, so that they can develop an eye for the beauty of the problems. What advice would you give to beginners? Work attitude is everything!
Tuesday: The Power of the AWR Ware house and Beyond Wednesday: Woman in Technology
Why is your presentation interesting for beginners? My presentation deals with a central diagnostic aspect of the database, where you can find lots of information about errors and problems in the system. The Alert Log is the first point where a beginner starts his search for unexplained phenomena.

Practice & Community RAC Battle: Let the Battle Begin
Fighting PL/SQL Myths with Arguments When the PL/SQL community meets at the conference, it comes down to business. In a public meeting of the interest group, the longtime PL/SQL specialist and Oracle Manager Bryn Llewellyn will preach against common PL/ SQL myths. You take the matter very personally, right? Yes, indeed. These myths are based on false arguments and these are the cause of a certain anti-attitude towards PL/SQL. That is why it is so important for me to vacate these tales. Would you call yourself a PL/SQL disciple? I am in favor of the product manager mantra. It reads: „Please do not ask me about the details of a solution before you have given me a clear description of your requirements.“ If the requirement calls for implementing procedural code in the Oracle database to issue simple statements for an application to be functional, then I am a supporter of PL/SQL. „Fanatic“ would be more accurate. I believe that PL/SQL in the database is the only way of implementation. Especially in terms of accuracy and performance. What myth do you desperately want to bust? The most egregious myth is usually spread without reference to PL/SQL per se. It says that „business logic“ does not belong into the database. Because code in the database means that no changes can be made without
downtime. That was a reality six years ago. Since the introduction of the Database 11g Release 2, this argument is invalid.
Martin Klier and Björn Rost will deliver an amazing duel over the advantages and disadvantages of Real Application Clusters. The war of words will be hosted by Johannes Ahrends.
Is there a myth that you get to hear more often than others? It is often said that you can‘t find engineers who know PL/ SQL. PL/SQL is an Ada-based language and easy to learn. In my opinion, „hard to find“ is just a synonym for „not willing to pay for appropriate skills“. The challenge is in fact an entirely different one: How does PL/SQL generate the code that it must produce. This design question also arises when using client-side languages.
Martin, you will be competing against Björn. Are you pro or con? I have no idea! (Laughs) No, seriously: I do not know. We will decide at the beginning of the battle on stage.
Why should PL/SQL skeptics attend your lecture? In my presentation, I will be using arguments to back up the allegations that I have established here. I would also like to remind the participants of the multitude of benefits that the use of PL/SQL brings – for example, Dependency Tracking or immunity to SQL injections. Tuesday: Why Use PL/SQL?

Community-Meetings
During the unconference, you may once again address problems from the lectures and from daily project life. Discuss what is really on your mind with all the participants. This format actively involves the entire audience. All participants can engage, contribute and participate. Spontaneity and collective brainstorming make for the best sessions and you obtain the necessary food for thought to find the solution to your problems.
Joining the conversation and contributing is what makes a community. The interest groups ADF, APEX, PL/SQL (see text above) and Engineered Systems will meet in public sessions at the conference. If you want to expand your network, exchange information about technologies and projects, or if you want to help shape the activities of the communities, these are the places to be.
ADF-Community As usual, the ADF Community will meet to review the past year and discuss future joint activities. Wednesday
Data Vault Forum Are you about to set up a Data Warehouse and considering whether Data Vault could be an alternative for you? In the „Data Vault Forum“, experienced experts will take the visitors’ questions regarding this data modeling method. The panel provides the ideal platform to address your questions about Data Vault directly. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the challenges and limitations in the context of sharing knowledge and expertise based on numerous practical examples. The discussion will be moderated by Michael Klose, Head of the Business Intelligence Community. Wednesday: Data Vault Forum

Martin, will you prepare for the duel? Surely I will review past projects in preparation of the event. Interesting are the stumbling blocks in the preparation period and in the planning stage, or why we decided not to use RAC.
Workshop: Create a Database Copy with RMAN
Unconference for Open Questions
Every day, all day
Johannes, the format was your idea. Why a RAC Battle? With this format, we for once can address the problems and not only the positive aspects of a product.
Open Mic Night for APEX After the successful premiere last year, the APEX community will organize another open mic night, the perfect opportunity to show projects and to discuss APEX. Wednesday night Engineered Systems Forum In the Engineered Systems Forum, the community will also be discussing technologies. Whether manufacturers, users or interested folks, anyone can participate. Operational aspects and the peculiarities of application development will also be topics to be discussed. Wednesday
There is definitely no closing time at the DOAG Conference + Exhibition: After the official presentation program, there will be a workshop held by the Database Community on Tuesday. Learn how to use the Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) to create a copy of a database. Whether for upgrade tests or performance tuning, for a developer or for one‘s own needs; with the RMAN DUPLICATE command you have automated processes that minimize error rates. Under the proficient guidance of DOAG experts, the participants will be familiarized with the procedure in a three-hour session. Tuesday evening
Demo Cinema Experienced Oracle employees inform participants through out three days as part of live demonstrations on selected Oracle products and features. Blockbusters like „Goldfinger. 007 with the GoldenGate license in his Big Data Mission“, „APEX Team: Fast and Furious. Development with APEX 5“ and „Deep Cloud Nine – With Cloud APIs into your Company‘s Galaxy“ will guarantee entertainment and your direct entry into practice. Every day, all day
Work, Learn, Relax Between numerous lectures, you have to take a break every once in a while. In the Developer Zone, you will find beanbags and tables to kick back and recharge. ADF and APEX Workshops on each day of the Conference Those who still have enough energy left over and wanting to familiarize themselves with APEX and ADF should visit the entry-level workshops. Students will show the participants the basics of both frameworks directly on the computer. Every day, all day
Johannes, what do you expect from the battle? I would be thrilled if the discussion would continue after the event and if the participants go home knowing about the advantages and disadvantages of a RAC implementation. At best, they take away the crucial food for thought from our battle. Martin, Björn, do you have a message for your enemy? Björn: Martin can‘t fool me when it comes to RAC. I know the ropes. Martin: Björn wants a battle? He can have it. RAC is not for whimps! All panel discussions: Tuesday: 12c Migration | Wednesday: RAC Battle Thursday: Cloning | Security
Training at Lunch Those who have sacrificed their lunch in favor of another lecture in the past will surely welcome the new offer by the Database Community: From now on, conference participants can deepen their knowledge directly at the lunch table. The „Meet the Experts“ lunches, which have a different topic each day, offer this new concept. These will kick off on Tuesday with the Oracle Enterprise Manager, followed on Wednesday by the Database Standard Edition. The Thursday session addresses replication issues. Every day during the lunch breaks
ODA Up Close During all three days of the conference, there will be an all-day „ODA Attack“ workshop as an introduction to the most interesting features of the Oracle Database Application (ODA). Whether to sneak a peek or to spend time: During the Hands-On workshop, you will find detailed information on machine administration, the rapid creation and upgrading of databases as well as importing, applying and snap-shooting virtual machines. Every day, all day: ODA Attack Mittwoch: „Engineered Systems“ Community Meeting

The Exhibition: The Spice of Life Whether a dedicated tour during a keynote or a short trip between two lectures, a visit to the exhibition is always worthwhile: Established international and national companies will be exhibiting alongside SME newcomers, manufacturers and service providers, Oracle Partners and competitors, presenting news from the Oracle world. The numerous raffles at various booths will offer some nice sur-
prises. As the exhibition becomes more popular every year, the exhibition space has been expanded this year. Nevertheless, it just might be crowded again: With its 100 square meters, the Oracle booth had so far enjoyed a special position during the exhibition. With a stand of 85 square meters, Scope Alliance, a consortium of five partner companies, will compete against the giant in this year‘s exhibition.
