With the economy entering a period of adjustment, the past six months have changed the game for the printing industry in Hong Kong. This is especially true for a commercial printer such as Asia One. We are now contending with stiffer competition within a shrinking market. So far, thanks to the hard work and intelligence of staff members from all departments, Asia One has performed extraordinarily well in this difficult environment. Although we haven’t met our target of double-digit growth, our performance is certainly the envy of our competitors. While they have generally adopted a defensive posture, we are still driven by an entrepreneurial spirit. Indeed, we opened a new branch of Asia Premium Solutions Ltd in Taiwan last summer, and in November we expanded into a new business by setting up Schneider Mini Storage.

In short, though we never neglect our core printing business, Asia One is always interested in exploring new opportunities. We create our own breakthroughs. Our efforts over the years have even recognised by the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council, who recently gave Asia One its Hong Kong Awards for Industries - Upgrading and Transformation Award. We’re also known for caring about the true core of our business: our staff members. To that end, we recently improved our work environment with the addition of a new multifunction room on 14/F, and with new enhancements to our already popular rooftop garden. The challenges ahead of us in 2016 are undoubtedly considerable. But as many long-time staff members know, we have surmounted greater challenges in the past. Our teamwork and persistence will ensure that Asia One keeps flourishing for a long time to come.

NEW TITLES FROM ASIA ONE BOOKS My First Big Book by Kungchinchin HK$98 ISBN: 978-988-13921-4-5 Most of us take the joy of reading for granted; but for some, it is no easy task. My First Big Book brings us to the moment the Big One first discovers books – but finds that they are too small to actually read. The Big One’s friend Rainie attempts to cheer him up, and uses different ways to help him find the joy of reading. But will his dream finally come true?

Azulejos em Macau (Portuguese Tiles in Macau) by Carol Kwok HK$350 ISBN: 978-988-13921-8-3 The influence of Portuguese art, architecture and craft still linger in Macau in the form of azulejos – the unique ceramic tiles characteristically used to decorate colonial-era buildings and public spaces. Each is a prize of craftsmanship and a work of art in itself, evoking a time, place and culture and a texture of life that is rapidly disappearing as Macau transforms into a ‘Vegas of the East’.

Well-known local models and actresses such as and Jocelyn and Anthony Sandstrom, Jennifer Tse, Gaile Lok and Mikki Yao joined Lee-Davies on his photographic expeditions, with the resulting images showing them close up to rhinos, elephants, lions and whale sharks.

Baltrop documented this scene, unflinchingly and obsessively capturing everything from fleeting naked figures in mangled architectural environments to scenes of explicit sex and police raids on the piers.
