Leipzig is once again issuing its invitation to the International Trade Show and World Congress, ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK (O+R) 2012. More than 500 exhibitors from 45 nations and some 21,000 visitors from over 100 countries are expected to attend. The German Association of Orthopaedic Technology (Bundesinnungsverband für OrthopädieTechnik), Leipziger Messe and Confairmed, assisted by the Programme Committee, the Overall Steering Committee and the Exhibitors‘ Advisory Committee, have joined together to share responsibility for structures which, every two years, create a centre for the world of technical orthopaedics. This arrangement results in the Trade Show and the Congress being two interdependent elements, whilst each supporting the other. And this describes well the guiding principle of O+R: to present the achievements in all aspects of orthopaedic technology and to develop them further on both an international and an interdisciplinary plane. The membership of the Programme Committee well reflects the latter of these. Orthopaedic footwear technicians, physiotherapists, prosthetists and orthotists work alongside representatives of the medical profession in an extremely convivial spirit of cooperation. Now that O+R 2010 has set new records in all respects, the focus in 2012 will be on improving the details. The success of an event is to be measured by the ability of all participants to pursue their objectives in the best possible conditions and by a `costbenefit ratio‘ that makes sense. Speakers, exhibitors

and visitors alike feel comfortable in Leipzig, where the services offered are well-known to be outstanding. With such a basis on which to build, it is easy to optimise individual elements and structures. A key decision for 2012 concerns the new dates for the Congress and Trade Show. At three days, the duration of the current trade fair (Wednesday to Friday) is ideal for a concentrated, compact event. The earlier start of the Congress on the Tuesday solves problems relating to arrival and creates time in the Congress to reduce the number of parallel events. Also new is the introduction of keynote lectures. Alongside the tried and tested mix of symposia and free thematic sessions, every day, two outstanding experts in their field will be able to give talks without having to compete with other, parallel events. Immediately afterwards, the speakers will be available for a “meet the speaker“ question-and-answer session in a smaller group. Distances at a trade show must be kept as short as possible and visitors should have quick and easy access to all the exhibits. So, in 2012, it will be possible to enter the exhibition halls from both east and west sides (car parks), via the central Glass Hall. The Glass Hall will again provide the opportunity to take another look at past achievements in technical orthopaedics. And with the sector‘s young talents located right next to this historical display, the future too has ensured its place. For the first time, the Glass Hall will become a centre for up to 700 trainees in orthopaedic technology and orthopaedic footwear technology. An extensive programme is planned for this Youth.Academy.Technical Orthopaedics, includ-

ing guided tours of the show and presentations by a number of exhibitors. Information-disseminating events on careers and professional development opportunities as well as an internship and job exchange complete the range of things on offer. Beyond all those influences which sometimes appear to be divisive, such as profession or language, we see the sector as one big family. It is therefore appropriate that, alongside the unfortunately unavoidable hustle and bustle of the Trade Show and Congress, we hold a celebration for all to join in. As in 2010, we are inviting people to a party in the Volkspalast in the old Exhibition Centre. A sense of well-being and an agreeable atmosphere are guaranteed. We are convinced that ORTHOPÄDIE + REHATECHNIK in Leipzig from 15 to 18 May 2012 will make sure that visitors, exhibitors and speakers alike gain a maximum amount of information and establish a maximum number of contacts. The world of technical orthopaedics and rehabilitation is about to meet up in Leipzig. We are very much looking forward to your visit.

General Conditions of Attendance Please note the terms and conditions set out by Leipziger Messe GmbH: Orders for admission tickets are binding. Because of limited space, no guarantee of attendance can be given. Once your place at the congress has been confirmed, it is binding. For online orders, confirmation will be sent out immediately the order has been completed. For fax orders, materials will be sent out as from January free of all postal charges. All prices include VAT at the current statutory rate. Payment for admission tickets is due to Leipziger Messe GmbH 8 days after the invoice date and may be made free of administration charges to one of the accounts named on the invoice. The organisers shall not be obliged to replace or refund admission tickets that have been lost. Orders, changes or cancellations will not be accepted unless made in writing. Cancellation of places that have been duly confirmed may only be made free of charge up to 14 days before the beginning of the event. A refund in respect of your order can only be made when all materials, including any admission tickets, have been returned in full. For changes to bookings for courses or congress tickets we levy an administration fee of EUR 10.00; there will be no charge for changing the name of the participant. There will be a processing fee of EUR 4.00 in the case of incomplete or incorrect direct debit instructions or credit-card details. Leipziger Messe reserves the right to substitute alternative speakers for those listed and to make any necessary changes to the programme, whilst at the same time maintaining the general character of the event. If the event is not able to go ahead because of circumstances beyond our control, because of disruption to the venue or because of insufficient numbers, participants will be informed immediately. In cases where the event has been called off because of insufficient numbers, refunds will be made to all 8

those who applied for a place. The organisers shall not be liable in respect of travel or accommodation costs, or loss of earnings, unless such costs are the result of grossly negligent or deliberate acts on the part of Leipziger Messe GmbH. Scientific Credits The German Institute for Quality Assurance and Certification for Orthopaedic Technology (IQZ) will award participants of the world congress IQZ points in category B (congresses of more than one day’s duration) on all days of the congress. For orthopaedic footwear technology, both the ZVOS and AGOS associations will award the maximum available points on all days of the congress. For American colleagues, a list of participants will be available from the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). The event has been registered with the Chamber of Medical Practitioners in the State of Saxony (Sächsische Landesärztekammer) as further professional training / development for doctors in the category “Congresses of more than one day’s duration“. Certificates of attendance at the World Congress and at specialist forums within the framework of the trade show will be issued by the congress office in the Leipzig Congress Center (CCL). Certificates of attendance for the trade show will be issued at the stand of the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology (BIV-OT) / Confairmed GmbH in Exhibition Hall 3.

The structure and the programme for the World Congress have been devised by the Programme Committee, chaired by Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Greitemann in cooperation with colleagues from the fields of orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic footwear technology, physiotherapy and medicine. Notional sponsor and steering organisation for the overall event, including both trade show and world congress, is the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology (Bundesinnungsverband für Orthopädie-Technik). Confairmed – Gesellschaft für Congressmanagement mbH are responsible for the organisation of the congress.

More than 200 lecture and poster submissions went through a peer-review process. Each submission was assessed by two reviewers. The Programme Committee and the congress office would like to thank all reviewers for their participation in this process.

Prosthetics & Orthotics NEW: Youth.Academy.TO on 17 and 18 May 2012 Trainee orthopaedic technicians, orthopaedic footwear technicians and physiotherapists of tomorrow will have the opportunity of an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences in their own dedicated area. An extensive programme is planned for the days of the trade show, specially tailored to the needs of school students. Along with a central meeting area for participants, thematic presentations by exhibitors and tours of the show will be offered. Events providing information on training institutions and further professional development opportunities as well as an internship and job exchange will complete the range on offer. The aim is to give the trainees new perspectives and to provide them with opportunities for networking. More detailed information is available at: www.facebook.com/Jugend.Akademie.TO Special show on the history of orthopaedic technology Under the sponsorship of the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology, developments in orthotics, in fashioning articulated splints, in the development of various articulation systems and in the specialist area of stump orthotics will be showcased in a special exhibition in the Glass Hall. The clinical picture of poliomelitis, coxitis and rickets in the past, and of scolioses, spina bifida and the provision of joint implants illuminates the present situation and describes the changes in orthotic treatments. Klaus Dittmer from Berlin, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute, and Dr. Franz Landauer, Salzburg, are responsible for the concept.

Gait Training Sessions In 2012, the German Federal Association for Arm and Leg Amputees (Bundesverband für Menschen mit Arm- oder Beinamputationen e.V.) will put on gaittraining sessions at ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK. The gait-training sessions will be held three times a day and qualified gait-trainers and physiotherapists, together with sports scientist Mandy Küssel, herself a leg amputee, and Manuela Soyka from the self-help group “Steh auf” will work with gait trainees. Visitors to the trade show will also be able to participate actively in the sessions. In addition, video analyses of different gaits will be discussed and assessed by experts in the field. The gait-training sessions will be held in Exhibition Hall 3, Stand A50 next to the stand belonging to the Federal Association for Arm and Leg Amputees. Forum International Forum International is the joint stand run by the sector‘s professional associations. Some 50 international associations, organisations and scientific organisations present themselves and their activities, inviting people to enjoy an exchange of experiences. This stand is a platform both for information and for communication, available to everyone seeking contacts abroad.

Orthopaedic Footwear Technology and Podiatry Specialist forums for orthopaedic footwear technology ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK in Leipzig will be the most important national and international gathering of orthopaedic footwear technicians in 2012. The entire sector will be exhibiting pretty well exclusively under the banner of “Healthy Feet“. As well as the congress programme, which offers the highest level of interdisciplinary professional development for orthopaedic shoe technology too, the German Central Association of Footwear Technology (Zentralverband Orthopädieschuhtechnik – ZVOS) is also organising additional professional develop-

Innovations in Research and Development

The treatment of the most severely handicapped and those with multiple handicaps will be the central focus of the special demonstration area: Technical Rehab Forum. For the first time there will be a “live“ demonstration of the manufacture of individual hand-made seat orthoses (Hall 3, Stand H15) from the initial pressing to the final installation on the wheelchair. Visitors will have the opportunity to look over the shoulder of the rehab technician and to discuss technical issues with him. Altogether, five healthcare suppliers, supported by the industry, will demonstrate in the “glass workshop“ how much skill, but also how much human empathy is required in the manufacture of individual seat orthoses.

The Research and Development section in Hall 1 will showcase the results of current research, product innovations and some initial prototypes. The joint stand “Campus“, with contributions from universities and research institutions, is set to provide a draw for scientists, business folk and consumers alike and encourage them to come and exchange ideas and experiences. There will be a display by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research‘s promotional project “Innovative Aids“, as well as by a number of research institutions working on exoskeletons and brain-computer interfaces. There will also be displays by service providers specialising in the testing and certification of healthcare products and patent protection. Arriving by air As well as Leipzig-Halle Airport you can also fly to two other airports near Leipzig: Berlin-Tegel and Berlin-Schönefeld. Leipziger Messe provides a coach to transfer you straight to the exhibition centre from Berlin-Tegel and there are excellent rail connections from Berlin-Schönefeld to Leipzig‘s main rail station. Leipzig Airport More than 40 airlines fly from the Leipzig-Halle Airport to 100 destinations. The airport schedule includes more than 300 direct flights to 8 German and 72 international destinations every week. Beyond this, there are low-cost flights with connections via the hubs of Frankfurt, Munich, Paris and Vienna to a whole series of destinations all over the world. There has been a direct flight from Leipzig to the Russian capital, Moscow, since summer 2009. Starting in November 2011, there are now direct flights to London and Rome. The aim is 7 flights a week from Leipzig / Halle to London-Stansted and three flights a week to Rome-Ciampino. Berlin’s Airports – International Air Hubs In 2010, the Berlin airports were served by a total of more than 80 airlines. The intra-European flight network is particularly close-knit. 131 destinations in 50 countries are included in the winter schedules of Berlin‘s airports. In 2011, more than 120 direct flights flew out of Berlin. With non-stop flights from Tegel to New York, Bangkok and Doha, capital of Qatar, the range of long-distance flights, too, is improving all the time. Moreover, since 2008, Berlin has had a direct link with the Chinese capital Beijing. In winter 2011/2012, easyJet will be putting on flights to Agadir, Manchester and Tenerife. And flights with Skyways to Geneva and with OLT Jetair to Danzig and Breslau extend services still further. So that Berlin‘s airports are constantly increasing their service network and remain successfully poised for the opening of the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport on 3 June 2012. Today, Joey Kelly is well known not only for his musical successes as a member of the Kelly Family but also for his achievements in the field of extreme sports. Most recently, for example, he walked Germany from north to south, took part in an expedition to the South Pole and beat his previous best time of five hours for the world’s toughest race, the Badwater Run in Death Valley, USA. Now, Joey Kelly invites runners to join him for a benefit run in Leipzig in the morning of 17 May 2012. The run is being held for the benefit of the children’s sports group of Rehasport Leipzig e.V. Instead of an entry fee, all participants are asked to make a donation. The run will begin at 07.00 hrs at Leipzig’s ‘Neues Rathaus’ (New Town Hall). The approx. 5 km route will take runners from the Town Hall, through the Clara Zetkin Park straight into the countryside. Ofa Bamberg GmbH will give each of the first 50 entrants a free pair of O-motion compression sport socks. There are few towns that can look back over such a great musical tradition as Leipzig. Names such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy are inextricably linked to Leipzig. Leipzig‘s BMW plant is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular industrial sites established since reunification. Taking less than three years to build, one of the most modern car manufacturing plants on the continent has grown up to the north of Leipzig. The central works building was designed by Londonbased architect Zaha Hadid, who was awarded the German Prize for Architecture in 2005 for it. On our short visit you will get a privileged insight into BMW production.

Art lovers everywhere will have heard of the “Leipzig School“. Creative artists have ever left their mark, and not only during the past few decades. Indeed Leipzig, this City of Trade Fairs, can also look back over a long tradition of patronage of the arts. Many of the city‘s leading citizens collected works from various periods and styles in the 19th century, which they then gave to the Museum of Creative Arts, founded in 1848. The museum today contains paintings, drawings and sculptures and includes works of art from the late Middle Ages through to the present day. Along with its art exhibitions, Leipzig‘s appeal rests also on a charming mix of architectural styles: from its Baroque buildings and the Wihelminian quarter to its contemporary architecture. The tour includes the steps, designed by Max Klinger, leading up to the Old Cotton Mill in the Plagwitz district. Industrial Romanticism comes into its own here and lots of ateliers and galleries invite passers by to view exhibitions by young internationally famous artists.

The trip takes you past the former border control point, Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate where the old wall ran. Nowhere are the rapid changes in the city more obvious than at the interface between the old East and West Berlin. You can get a clear picture of this on a walking tour of the town full of new experiences. After lunch at Sarah Wiener‘s restaurant there is a tour of Otto Bock Healthcare‘s Science Centre. An hour-long guided tour of the Bernauer Straße Memorial (Stasi prison) concludes the trip.

The trip to Dessau begins with a tour of the town, by coach and on foot. There follows an hour and a half‘s visit to the famous Bauhaus. The walk around the Bauhaus takes you through various historic rooms of a building erected in 1926 for the School of Art, Design and Architecture. After lunch in the Orangerie in the Luisium Park, the trip continues to Wittenberg, home of Martin Luther. The guide has lots of interesting snippets of information and anecdotes to tell during a fascinating wander through the old town. Alongside the Schlosskirche, you will also visit the Luther House. For over 35 years this was the main locus of activity for Martin Luther and where he reached his “reformatory discovery“. It is the oldest treasury museum in Europe and contains one of the most extensive and magnificent collections of treasury art from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Then the trip takes you on by coach to Radeburg, where you will take the narrow gauge railway and can enjoy the trip to Radebeul.
