2016 Community Report

Albright Care Services is a non-profit organization affiliated in faith with The United Methodist Church through the Susquehanna Conference. Our mission is to care for the senior population in the Pennsylvania communities in which we operate. In particular, we strive to meet the housing and healthcare needs of seniors in ways that help them age gracefully and with dignity. Albright operates two independent senior living communities with a full continuum of care—RiverWoods in Lewisburg and Normandie Ridge in York. Albright operates LIFE (Living Independently for Elders) programs that provide health, social and spiritual day care in three communities— Lancaster, Lebanon and Williamsport. Albright also manages Warrior Run Manor in Watsontown, a housing complex for the disabled and elderly. RiverWoods is also home to the Slifer House Museum. Slifer House was the original ‘home for the aged’ established by the Evangelical Association, and was in operation for nearly 60 years. Slifer House then opened to the public as a museum in 1976 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Albright Care Services provides housing and healthcare services for more than 1,200 seniors in eight counties. As a non-profit organization, Albright is committed to meeting the continually changing needs of the communities it serves and is grateful for the ongoing financial support of family, friends and neighbors within those communities.

Dear Friends, Throughout this year, we celebrate Albright’s 100 years of service in the Susquehanna Valley—an amazing milestone! So many people have shaped Albright’s history with gifts of time, talent and treasure. We recognize some of them in this publication—our annual Community Report. Others will be recognized at events during the year. All have our sincerest gratitude! Reflecting on our past helps us more fully appreciate the present. The numerous advancements in medicine over 100 years have had significant impact on our delivery of care and our ability to help thousands of older adults enjoy life to the fullest. We have evolved from a single ‘home for the aged’ to a full continuum senior living community with community services beyond our walls. Our mission is to encourage purposeful living and ensure care for those who need it most. This mission will surely carry us through the next 100 years. The future holds great promise. Our roots are strong and provide a solid foundation for Albright. And because our branches are many, we know we have the flexibility to reach toward great new opportunities for sustained success. Thank you for all the ways in which your service has helped us grow and prosper. Celebrating Years of

Service

Albright Care Services has a long tradition of benevolent care. Dating back to 1916, our mission has been to keep our doors open to a diverse group of people and ensure their care regardless of ability to pay. It is a mission that has always been the right thing to do, but it hasn’t been without challenges. Our history includes a number of generous people and organizations who have helped us meet those challenges and strengthen our benevolent and charitable programs. We have been blessed by their generosity.

Albright is pleased to report good stewardship of the The Spriggle Fund for the Endowment of Benevolent Care. The balance on December 31, 2015 was $1,312,878. This represents a 24 month return of 9.9%.

lbright Care Services is celebrating 100 years of serving the community. From humble beginnings in Lewisburg in 1916, to service in six sites a century later, Albright encourages purposeful living in order to create the highest quality of living for residents, program participants, staff and volunteers. Albright’s history is filled with generous donations of time and expertise, donated goods and services, and cash contributions.

In February 1879, long before the ministry of care was formally established in the twentieth century, Father Adolph Weidemeyer of Baltimore County, Maryland, gave a bequest of $115 to his son, Rev. P.C. Weidemeyer, to hold as a sacred trust in support of a home for the elderly. He believed a home for the elderly was a necessary agency of the church and a ministry not yet being provided. Rev. Weidemeyer handed his father’s trust to the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Evangelical Church in March 1907. This is the first gift on record to the Evangelical Home, established in 1916.

The Spriggle Endowment for Benevolent Care, held at the United Methodist Stewardship Foundation, provides a vital, yet modest, income stream to meet the benevolent mission. With the Foundation’s help, Albright continues to share the story of benevolent needs for friends and neighbors in the community and encourage additional gifts and bequests to help meet these ongoing needs.

“Benevolent care at Albright Care Services would be fully funded with ten million dollars,” said Fran Ashby, vice president for fund development at Albright. Earlier this year, a gift from the estate of David and June Moyer brought Albright closer to reaching that goal.

Albright Care Services is proud to establish the David B. and June W. Moyer Endowment Fund for Benevolent Care. Their gift speaks to a lifetime of careful planning and a desire to make a positive and perpetual difference for current and future Normandie Ridge residents. The Moyers’ gift is restricted for benevolent care.

An estate gift is a smart way to ensure you have enough money for your needs, while making provisions for causes you care about. It provides security because money is protected throughout your lifetime for whatever comes along. Only after all obligations are met, during life and immediately following death, does a charity receive a gift.

David and June Moyer moved to Normandie Ridge in February of 2006. David was from Sunbury, PA, and June was from Selinsgrove, PA. They made Normandie Ridge their final home after traveling all over the world. The Moyers believed strongly in Normandie Ridge’s benevolent programs. They established a charitable gift annuity in 2007. This annuity provided a regular income stream during their lifetime. June passed away on February 8, 2013, and David followed on September 25, 2014. Upon David’s death, the annuity residual became a gift for Normandie Ridge and the Moyers designated the annuity, in part, to fund benevolent care. David and June did something else that was extraordinary. They provided generously for Normandie Ridge in their estate plan with a gift supporting benevolent endowment.

Albright Care Services gratefully acknowledges all bequests in support of benevolence, education, general operating expenses and capital improvements. Contributions to any of the benevolent or education funds are welcome at any time and support our greatest priorities.

In 2015, Normandie Ridge completed a Memory Care Residence to serve residents with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. The 18-bed residence provides a homelike environment and

allows for independence within the home, as well as the beautiful secure outdoor garden. The Memory Care Capital Campaign, led by Susan and Chuck Martin, Normandie Ridge residents, and supported by John and Elaine Yates, community members, successfully raised $427,808 in support of the construction. A brick plaza will be installed in 2016, which will serve, in part, to recognize the generosity of our many donors.

In addition to these transformational gifts, we recognize the compassionate care given each day by our employees, which is the cornerstone of exceptional service to seniors. Albright’s history is full of stories about the many times that employees have gone beyond what is expected, and for that, we are grateful. We are proud to share that 56 of Albright’s current employees have worked with us for more than 20 years, and 19 of those 56 have been here 35 or more years. During 2016, 42% of our employees will reach the five year milestone. We salute our loyal employees as they set a high standard for all future employees at Albright Care Services.

$343,988 in Benevolent Care At RiverWoods, a groundbreaking in May 2015 marked the first stage in the remodeling of the main entrance to the nursing care center, as well as the construction of The Adams Center for Rehabilitation and Transitional Care, both of which will open to the public in late 2016. The renovated main entrance is the new home for the Auxiliary Gift Shop as well as The Keller Meditation Chapel, named to recognize George and Margaret Keller, and their family. Margaret Keller is an emeritus member of the Albright Board of Trustees. The Keller Chapel features original stained glass windows from the Evangelical Home that date back to 1926. The Adams Center is named in honor and memory of Dr. Eugene and Mrs. Lena Adams, great friends and residents of RiverWoods, in recognition of their generosity.

Volunteers Make a Difference!

T

he generosity of our volunteers makes a huge impact in the lives of residents, participants and employees in the Albright family. Each year, hundreds of community members volunteer in a variety of ways that make life better for those living and working on our campuses, and participating in our programs. Volunteers complete a variety of jobs each year, which include providing dog therapy services, musical and other types of entertainment, engaging in scheduled activities, packing and delivering meals for Meals on Wheels Lewisburg/Milton and giving tours of Slifer House Museum. We are truly grateful to those who make a difference through their volunteer service! Their kindness and dedication brightens the lives of our residents and participants, and enables our staff to better fulfill our mission of encouraging purposeful living. Donors Support Campus Growth

A

s evidenced by multiple capital projects on the Normandie Ridge and RiverWoods campuses, 2015 was an exciting year for growth at Albright Care Services. The first capital project completed was at Normandie Ridge with the opening of a new dining, nursing and rehabilitation space within the skilled nursing center. Shaun Smith, president and CEO, dedicated the space to the past, present and future residents of Normandie Ridge. The renovated space includes a conference room, fireplace lounge, recreation space and updated nursing station, all designed to better meet the needs of both long- and short-term residents. The new dining room offers a country kitchen and traditional dining space. The country kitchen provides a casual dining atmosphere where residents can enjoy the entertainment and aromas of food being prepared. The recreation space offers a piano and leads into the peaceful Serenity Garden, while the conference room provides space for care planning, family gatherings and staff meetings.

RiverWoods completed a physical therapy waiting room at the nursing care center in February. The RiverWoods Auxiliary donated $3,000 toward the purchase of furniture for the waiting room, made possible through funds raised in the gift shop, membership dues and outright donations. The waiting room serves outpatient needs, including independent living and personal care residents, as well as the needs of visiting families looking for a place to gather outside of resident rooms. Alcove Apartments opened at Normandie Ridge in January and RiverWoods in September, providing an additional housing option with full access to amenities. The projects involved approximately 10,000-square-foot conversions of existing personal care areas into independent living apartments, providing an option that better fits the needs of a growing population of seniors. The Alcove Apartments were specially designed to prolong independence through supportive services that are readily available if needed. The residents of these apartments have full access to all recreation and dining services, as well as an array of in-home services when necessary. In December, Normandie Ridge celebrated the completion of an 11,000 square-foot memory care residence. The state-of-the-art facility accommodates 18 residents and is designed to promote safe and abundant living for current and future Normandie Ridge residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Environment, lighting and furnishings were designed with memory care residents’ particular needs in mind. Details such as gliding doors and curbless showers in each room offer safe and easy bathroom access, while the common area has a stone fireplace and enclosed patio and garden, which makes the space inviting and homelike. Color has been used as an identifier to aid navigation throughout the residence. To date, $427,808 has been raised in support of the Memory Care Residence. Polar Bear Plunge, Fashion Show, Car Show, Golf Challenge, Anniversary Celebration, Grande Illumination, Everyday Heroes—Oh My!

N

o matter what time of year, Albright Care Services always has something happening. Opportunities to volunteer, donate or attend an event are offered throughout the year. Following is a sample of the many events available to residents, staff and community members. Your support makes it all possible!

Every February, RiverWoods staff members plunge into the icy Susquehanna River. The team is called the RiverWoods Ice Angels and solicits donations from staff, family members and friends. Each participant personally pays a registration fee to the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership for the privilege of taking the plunge as part of the Lewisburg Ice Festival. Throughout the past five years, 55 different staff members and friends have helped to raise $14,457 for benevolent care. The late Phyllis Close, RiverWoods resident, was an honorary Ice Angel, having solicited donations from residents for the past three years in support of the team. In 2015, a Spring Fashion Show was initiated by the Normandie Ridge Auxiliary, comprised of residents and church members from the greater York area. Women of the Auxiliary modeled the clothing and accessories, and refreshments were served by men of the Auxiliary. Over 100 guests were in attendance. The Auxiliary has since made the show an annual event, after the first two years proved to be lots of fun for all who were involved.

The RiverWoods Car Show, held the third Saturday in May each year, is organized and run by staff. The Car Show is a fun way to engage the wider community on the RiverWoods campus. In addition to a variety of cars on display, delicious food is available for purchase from a number of vendors including Brewster’s Ice Cream, Blyler Foods, Jordan’s Funnel Cakes, RiverWoods Auxiliary and Sodexo in 2016. One of the highlights each year is awarding the Resident’s Choice and People’s Choice trophies. Through the Enrichment Fund, proceeds from the Car Show are used to purchase a variety of items including special

equipment needed to enhance the lives of residents. The projector in Marlow Hall used for showing movies and presentations, and the large gazebo outside of the nursing care center which is enjoyed by residents, family and staff are additional examples of purchases made through this event.

Grande Illumination, our winter event, began at Normandie Ridge in 1997 and at RiverWoods in 1999. Approximately 1,000 luminaries are placed on the grounds of each campus and sponsored in memory or honor of a loved one, or named for one who has been a blessing to the sponsor. A beautiful remembrance booklet with the names of the donors and those they choose to remember or honor is published for each campus. Over 150 volunteers from local churches and community organizations help

The Albright Golf Challenge held annually in June has grown and evolved since its inception in April 1999. Hosted at Bucknell Golf Club since 2005, the Golf Challenge has raised more than $1 million. More than 265 different golfers have participated, with Carl Schlappi, Steve Foust and Shaun Smith raising funds in all 17 years. RiverWoods staff member Lynn Snyder has participated for 16 years and former board member Rev. Doug Eberly has participated for 15 years. Collectively, these five fundraiser golfers have raised $211,968!

to light the luminaries each year under the guidance of residents. Students from the Christian School of York and the Meadowbrook Christian School of Milton help each year to place the luminaries at the respective campuses followed by a time of fellowship with the residents, complete with cookies and cocoa. All of the proceeds from Grande Illumination support benevolent care, and cumulatively the events have raised $413,443 in just under 20 years. The Everyday Heroes initiative began in 2014 as an opportunity for staff to become involved in ways to raise money for the benefit of those they serve. Staff help direct how the funds will be used at each of the sites to enrich the lives of participants and residents. By the end of 2015, more than $16,000 was raised through a variety of events. Albright is blessed to have staff who believe in the mission of caring!

The Normandie Ridge Anniversary Celebration is held annually on the second Saturday in October. Planned by a committee of Auxiliary members and under the direction of chair Flo Waybright, the Anniversary Celebration has become a day full of delicious food, beautiful crafts, creative themed baskets and fun entertainment. A number of York area church members donate food items and time to make it successful. All of the proceeds are used by the Auxiliary to fund programs like drum circle therapy, as well as items used to improve quality of life for residents, including iPads, iPods and custom wheelchairs. Additionally, the Auxiliary was a major donor for the Serenity Garden.

Auxiliaries Support Purposeful Living for Residents

T

he members of the Normandie Ridge and RiverWoods Auxiliaries are dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents. Each year, the auxiliaries donate thousands of dollars in support of the Benevolent Care Fund, recreation, therapy equipment and innovative programming. The auxiliaries’ generosity in providing for others is a deeply rooted tradition, dating back to the founding of the United Evangelical Home. Over the years, the auxiliaries on each campus have grown and changed, but the mission of serving the needs of residents has remained the same. The Women’s Auxiliary of the United Evangelical Home was organized in 1915 to support the Home’s opening on August 4, 1916. According to the first Annual Report, the object of the auxiliary was to gather funds and materials for the equipment and maintenance of the Home. Known as the Ladies Auxiliary, the organization regularly met at Central Oak Heights, the meeting place of the Home’s founders. Annual dues for auxiliary membership were 50 cents. In the early years, the auxiliary helped to provide the central heating and power plant, supplying electricity and heat for residents. The Ladies Auxiliary continued to provide for the Home for 57 years through numerous services, donations and improvements for residents, as well as serving lunch and organizing a craft bazaar for annual Anniversary Day celebrations. Years later, the Home expanded to offer a nursing home, and the United Methodist Nursing Home Auxiliary was organized on September 1, 1970. The auxiliary’s first project was to raise funds to equip the doctor’s office with medical supplies. After successfully completing the first project, the auxiliary began fundraising for the creation of a gift shop. The gift shop opened in the front lobby on March 20, 1971. A merger of the Evangelical Home and the United Methodist Nursing Home on May 19, 1972,

resulted in the merger of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Evangelical Home and the United Methodist Nursing Home Auxiliary. The Lewisburg United Methodist Homes Auxiliary was born and its first project was raising funds for the purchase of a minibus equipped with a hydraulic lift for transporting residents in wheelchairs. When the campus was renamed RiverWoods in 1997, the Auxiliary was renamed RiverWoods Auxiliary to reflect this change. With expansion of the Home to York, the Normandie Ridge Auxiliary was formed in 1993 with the purpose of enhancing the lives of Normandie Ridge residents. The auxiliary raises funds through membership dues, contributions, and other activities. The majority of the funds are used to purchase items such as specialized wheelchairs, electronic devices and other items that allow residents to enjoy a more abundant life. Funds are also donated to the Benevolent Care Fund, which provides assistance to residents who have outlived their financial resources. Thank you so much to our current auxiliary members for continuing the custom of service which started so long ago. The tradition of giving back to RiverWoods and Normandie Ridge endures, thanks to your generosity and dedication. We are grateful for your support!

Catastrophe Fund Helps Employees In Need

A

lbright Care Services established an Employee Catastrophe Fund to assist employees who have experienced a catastrophic loss such as fire, flood, or other natural disaster, or personal traumatic hardship. It is funded through payroll deductions and outright gifts. The program was inaugurated in 2015. The Catastrophe Fund received generous support from 26 staff members who contributed a total of $3,346 throughout the year and also received a matching gift from Albright. The fund was used to aid three employees who suffered catastrophic losses in 2015. Thank you to all of the employees who supported their colleagues last year. You make a difference when it is needed most!

All Kinds of Gifts-in-Kind

F

or 100 years, we have relied on gifts-in-kind to provide a higher quality of life for the individuals we serve. In 1916, The United Evangelical Home was able to open its doors to those in need and has continued to flourish, thanks to an array of gifts-in-kind that were donated by generous individuals, churches and organizations. Gifts received during that first year ranged from livestock to furniture and included bushels of potatoes, 25 hens and a rooster, jars of jelly, canned goods, aluminum kettles, quilts, towels, rugs, lanterns, glassware, china and chairs. Many people donated their time through labor and skills, including hauling and shocking wheat, carpentry and painting. These gifts-in-kind helped to feed residents, furnish rooms, equip the kitchen, and set the table for shared meals. The generosity of countless individuals, churches and organizations made a difference back then, just as gifts-in-kind continue to make a difference today.

Every year, Albright Care Services receives hundreds of gifts-in-kind that help us to better serve our residents and participants. Many gifts were received in 2015 including 23 handmade afghans, a motorized wheelchair and a Baldwin piano. Some gifts help our staff keep sites maintained, such as the Ride On Carpet Extractor donated by Metz Environmental and Culinary Services. In addition, a number of individuals, businesses and organizations provided gifts last year as prizes for our fundraising events. These donated gifts help us promote the events and reward those who take part in helping to raise funds for the Benevolent Care and Resident Enrichment Funds, funds which directly support the needs of our residents and participants.

Regardless of its size or shape, your gift-in-kind makes a difference! From words found in the first Annual Report of the United Evangelical Home written by Rev. Dr. Abraham Winter, first superintendent, “To each and all who in any way have remembered the Home, we desire to express our sincere and heartfelt ‘thank you,’ and our appreciation of [your] loving remembrance of our needs and comfort...” For these many gifts, we could not be more grateful. Staff Help Raise Awareness for Alzheimer’s Association In November 2015, RiverWoods Senior Living Community participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Indian Park, Montoursville. Despite the rainy day, the RiverWoods team (pictured left) had 17 team members who participated in the walk. Made up of staff members and their family members, the team was in the top five fundraisers teams for the event, having raised $2,726 for the Alzheimer’s Association through a bake sale, business sponsors and individual fundraising efforts. Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Morgan Cousler Park, York in October. The Normandie Ridge team (pictured left) had 18 team members who participated in the walk. With staff and their family members on the team, they raised $1,988 for the Alzheimer’s Association through various fundraisers and individual efforts. We are proud to support the Alzheimer’s Association, which focuses on care, support and research for Alzheimer’s disease. and is an oil painting completed by an exceedingly skilled artist, most likely from Philadelphia, although no signature has been found. It is framed in an ornate, gold, water-gilded frame. Through the generous donation of RiverWoods resident Milton House, the portrait and its frame will be restored and returned to the museum’s parlor in time for the centennial celebration at RiverWoods in August 2016. The daily operation of the museum is made possible by individuals who donate their time by providing guided tours, assisting with events, and completing archival tasks. An internship program was created last year, providing new educational opportunities that have had a great impact on the museum’s offerings and strengthening its connection in the community. University students applied for internships to learn about and take part in the many facets of the museum’s operation.

Anna Slifer Returns Home

S

lifer House Museum celebrated great success in 2015, thanks to the generous support of donors and volunteers. The museum obtained a very exciting acquisition last year. After receiving special contributions from a dozen donors, Slifer House purchased a portrait of Anna Slifer Walls. Anna was the youngest daughter of Eli Slifer, secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania during the Civil War and the individual who commissioned the mansion to be built by architect Samuel Sloan circa 1860.

The portrait is the first and only portrait that the museum owns of a Slifer child. It was purchased at an auction held at Roller Mills Antiques, Lewisburg, Did you know you can find all of Albright’s publications on our website? Visit us at AlbrightCare.org.

A dozen interns from Susquehanna University, Tufts University and Bucknell University completed internships last year that provided experience in marketing, collections care, research, community outreach and fundraising. Special projects that interns assisted in completing included creating a digital inventory of early United Evangelical Home photos, implementing special events, hosting two weddings, organizing the porch sale and entering artifacts into a digital database. The database will enable information to be quickly found using a search tool, including where the items are located in the museum and their significance. The database will allow for more cohesive exhibits and programming. The museum relies on the generosity of volunteers, interns, and contributors to continue providing quality public programming and tours, including the special centennial exhibit opening on August 4. The exhibit will feature photographs and artifacts of the United Evangelical Home, which celebrated its opening on April 4, 1916. The museum is looking forward to the next 100 years, with an upcoming expansion which will offer handicappedaccessibility to the museum and a multipurpose room that will be used by RiverWoods and the external community for exhibits, art gallery space, meetings, and more! lbright Care Services is dedicated to the many individuals we serve in our six locations. We are proud that our staff members are equally devoted to Albright’s mission and the commitment to quality service. This year marks significant service milestones for some staff members, particularly the six who have worked at RiverWoods for over 40 years: • Dorothy Page, Central Supply, hired June 1, 1970 • Gloria Maust, Nursing, hired May 23, 1971 • Lucy Cornelius, Dietary, hired May 26, 1973 • Robert Hemrick, Maintenance, hired July 17, 1973 • Brenda Nixon, Housekeeping, hired October 17, 1974 • Sharon Fisher, Nursing, hired January 7, 1976 When added together, this group of six staff members has nearly 260 combined years of service at Albright! They have experienced significant progress on campus, including building construction, policy changes and evolving health care regulations. Additionally, 72 employees have worked 20 or more years for Albright at LIFE Lycoming, Normandie Ridge and RiverWoods. Of those 72 employees, 13 have worked for 35 years! We commend the loyalty of those who chose to work at Albright. Many thanks for all you do to support the Albright mission!

THURSDAY, AUGUST 4 1-4 p.m. Centennial exhibit opens at Slifer House Museum. Book signing of Memories, Reflections, and Dreams: An Illustrated History of Albright Care Services. Fun, interactive historical stands to provide a glimpse at life 100 years ago, fresh produce sales recalling the Home when it was a working farm. Farm-to-table dinner with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. (Invitations will be mailed at a later date.) 7 p.m. Rolf Sturm and Friends jazz concert at Slifer House Museum. FRIDAY, AUGUST 5 Dr. Gong Chen, neuroscientist, and the distinguished Verne M. Willaman Chair in Life Sciences at Penn State University, will deliver a talk entitled New Hope for Brain Repair. (Times to be announced.) SUNDAY, AUGUST 7 10 a.m. Worship service at Central Oak Heights. Brunch at RiverWoods (Invitations will be mailed at a later date.)
