THE GIFT THAT MY CAREER HAS BEEN As I prepare for my retirement as the CEO of Carondelet Foundation, I reflect on the gift that my career has been. I have been with Carondelet nearly 24 years, and in my position at the Foundation for 21 years. I still recall vividly the day Sister St. Joan Willert offered me my first job here. She teased me that it was because I pronounced Carondel “ette” properly. I have to admit that, at the time, it was just luck. I consider my career a gift because I have had the opportunity to meet and know personally so many of the people who have been touched by the mission of Carondelet. And, with joy, they want to give something back. How many people can say their career was spent making lifelong friends? Yes, it has been a gift. I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from an outstanding Board of Trustees, and have felt supported every inch of the way. I recall that Loring Green was president of St. Mary’s Foundation when we merged with St. Joseph’s. I recall an agreement among all trustees that neither foundation president would be “eligible” to serve as the chair of the new Carondelet Foundation. When the merger was complete, there was a “groundswell” from the combined board, insisting that Loring be our founding chair. We have been blessed with that kind of leadership and commitment ever since. Dennis Reidy is now entering his second year as Chair of Carondelet Foundation. Dennis has a heart of gold and an endless passion for our mission. I am proud to say I hear frequently that the Carondelet Foundation staff is so pleasant, thoughtful and nice to work with. No truer words could be spoken. They have been a delight to me ... ready and willing to give their “all” for Carondelet, for each other, and for me.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet arrived in Southern Arizona in the late 1800’s and made a promise to provide for the healthcare needs of local residents and workers, establishing a legacy of caring that has stood the test of time.

Nearly 130 years later Carondelet’s pioneering and core values remain the same: integrity, innovation, excellence, and service to the community, especially to those persons most in need. Today, Carondelet Health Network is fulfilling the promise of its founders by bringing advanced technologies and innovative services in a compassionate healing environment to the residents of Southern Arizona. Fulfilling this promise requires continued growth and improvements on a variety of levels. After extensive study of community need, Carondelet has developed a plan to fulfill the original mission of its founders in a new age of technology and medical advancement. This plan will transform two of Carondelet’s Tucson-based medical campuses, construct a replacement hospital in the community of Nogales and construct a new hospital for the fast-growing communities of Sahuarita/Green Valley. PASSING THE TORCH C HIEF E XECUTIVE O FFICER J ANNIE C OX S AYS G OODBYE Although it is symbolic, the passing of the torch represents a change. There is no better way to usher in change than with the New Year, when new beginnings are looked forward to. In 2008, promising changes and new beginnings are coming to Carondelet Foundation. On January 1, 2008 Chief Executive Officer Jannie Cox plans to retire, passing the torch to Pamela Doherty, Chief Operating Officer for the Foundation for the last year. Cox reflects on her decision to retire and admits it came with some difficulty, though she knows she has made the right choice at the right time, and she welcomes Doherty to her post. “Pamela will bring us new energy and fresh ideas,” Cox said. “Changes in leadership are healthy for an organization, and it’s time for the Foundation. I’ve watched her grow into this role and I am thrilled for her. I know she will take us forward to a new level of excellence.” Cox began her succession plan about two years ago. The Foundation leadership conducted a rigorous national search for Cox’s replacement. Little did they know that the best candidate would be a person whom they’d known for a long time – someone who already shared dedication and passion for Carondelet’s mission and core values.

In 2006, Doherty left her position as Executive Director of the Center for Planned Giving at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona to serve as Chief Operating Officer for Carondelet Foundation with plans to transition into the CEO role in January. It was a coming home of sorts for Doherty, who previously served at Carondelet Foundation in a variety of roles from 1993 to 2002.

“I’m very proud to be serving as a member of the executive leadership team for the network,” Doherty said. “It’s not always common for Foundation leaders to be able to do that in our industry, but I think it’s key for effective philanthropy.”

“I’m thrilled to be here now to step into the role of CEO,” Doherty said. “One of the wonderful things about my history at Carondelet Foundation is that I’ve been involved in every aspect of fundraising. I love our mission and am grateful to be working with people who are so dedicated to fulfilling the promise of that mission on a daily basis.” Doherty said she has spent the last year streamlining processes and working on operational issues to prepare the Foundation for the exciting and challenging road ahead. She walks into the CEO position with confidence and an ambition to keep the Carondelet Foundation at the forefront of healthcare and service to the Tucson regional community.

Cox will remain with Carondelet Foundation on a part-time basis and focus on major gift fundraising, with the title of CEO Emeritus. She looks forward to getting out in the community to spend more time with donors – something she dearly loves. “The future for Carondelet and the Foundation is very, very bright,” Cox said. “I’m so pleased about this transition, and ask all of my colleagues, our trustees and our donors to give Pamela their full support as she becomes our leader. I’m going to sit back and watch her shine.”

CHARITABLE GIFTS FROM YOUR IRA B Y J O D E C HATELET , CPA, CFP On August 17, 2006, President Bush signed the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which contains a provision benefiting charities and individuals who would like to give funds to charity. The provision allows the “qualified charitable distribution” of Individual Retirement Account (IRA) funds during your lifetime. This window of opportunity was due to close on December 31, 2007. However, on November 9, 2007, the House passed HR. 3996, which includes a one-year extension of the IRA charitable rollover. The legislation will now move to the Senate. IRAs are the perfect vehicle for charitable giving. Traditional IRAs are composed of tax deferred income. As a result, distributions are taxable, whether received by you or by your beneficiaries after your death. Charities as non-profit entities are not taxed on IRA distributions made directly to them. Although you have been able to name a charity as the direct beneficiary of your IRA, prior to this law, you have not been able to benefit a charity during your lifetime. CONSIDER A QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION You should consider a qualified charitable distribution if you have adequate funds for your retirement, you don’t need your required minimum distributions, and you do not want to leave your IRA to family members or friends. Making a qualified charitable distribution gives you the pleasure of seeing the charity benefit from your gift. At the same time, there may be a tax savings to you by making this direct distribution. As the IRA owner, you can make these distributions to charity if you are 70½ years or older. 8 } Q U E S T M AG A Z I N E

OTHER RULES • The qualified charitable distribution applied to 2006 and it applies to 2007. • Each individual is limited to a $100,000 per year distribution to charity. • If the distribution to charity is equal to or greater than the required minimum distribution, the IRA owner will not be required to take any additional IRA funds for the year. • The qualified charitable distribution must be made directly by the IRA trustee to the charitable organization. • The charity must be qualified under Code Section 170(b)(1)(A) and cannot be a private foundation or donoradvised fund. • This provision does not apply to distributions from employer-sponsored retirement plans, including SIMPLE IRAs and simplified employee pensions. • The donor cannot receive any benefit in exchange for this contribution.

TAX RETURN REPORTING The qualified charitable distribution is not reported as income on your tax return, and the charitable contribution is not reported as a deduction on your tax return. This is more advantageous for a variety of reasons. When the IRA distribution is included in adjusted gross income, it can effect the limitations on itemized deductions and personal exemptions. Charitable contributions are normally limited to certain percentages of adjusted gross income, but these charitable distributions are not. Taxpayers may be able to take advantage of the standard deduction instead of itemizing deductions. Your individual tax savings will vary depending on your particular situation. Consult with your tax advisor to determine how this might benefit you and for assistance in making a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA. Please keep an eye on the news media for updates regarding this legislation.

FINANCIAL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL C ELEBRATING I TS 10-Y EAR A NNIVERSARY The Carondelet Foundation’s Financial Health Advisory Council (FHAC) celebrated its 10th anniversary in October with a reception at the Arizona Inn. FHAC is a group of 58 legal and financial experts with a mission to provide charitable planning options for individual donors interested in including Carondelet in their estate plan. The members represent a wide range of professions including accounting, law, financial services, insurance, funeral pre-planning, real estate, trust and banking. FHAC supports Carondelet Health Network’s healing ministry and is instrumental in the success of the Foundation’s planned giving program, helping to ensure that Carondelet’s mission continues well into the future.

THE CARONDELET NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE W ORLD C LASS T ECHNOLOGY C LOSE In summer 2008, Southern Arizona will have access to the Carondelet Neurological Institute (CNI), a $30 million facility specializing in brain and spinal treatment based at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Through the new CNI, Carondelet Health Network (CHN) will be able to offer its patients world-class technologies locally – some of which have not been available before in North America. “Until now, hundreds of local patients diagnosed with significant neurological illnesses and injuries have been forced to seek care in other cities, such as Phoenix, Albuquerque and Los Angeles,” said Greg Angle, CEO of Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital. “In keeping with our mission of providing exceptional medicine and exceptional care to this region, Carondelet Health Network has made a significant commitment to remedy this situation.”

Under the leadership of Angle, Eric P. Sipos, M.D. and Robert Goldfarb, M.D., the CNI will draw upon the expertise of Arizona’s top neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuro-specialists working cooperatively to improve the health and welfare of each patient. “At the heart and soul of the Carondelet Neurological Institute will be a partnership, a unique collaboration between Carondelet’s growing network of hospitals, physicians, clinicians and our team of neurological specialists,” said Dr. Sipos, medical director for CNI. “Our approach to care represents a quantum leap in the treatment of patients with neurological illnesses and injuries. For the first time, this combination of medical expertise and world class technology will be available to residents within Southern Arizona.”

The CNI will be equipped with the most sophisticated neurosurgical technology available, including a fully integrated BrainSUITE iCT by BrainLAB. Until now, this technology has only been available in Germany. It provides high-speed, high resolution, real-time 3-D imagery of the brain and spine during an operation, allowing for the highest level of precision possible.

The high-resolution, real time 3-D images provided by the BrainSUITE iCT allow surgeons to view the patient’s brain and spine with the highest possible level of precision.

Construction of the CNI is scheduled for completion in early summer of 2008. The wide range of technology, services, and equipment in the facility will be phased into operation during the year.

Other key elements of the CNI are an inpatient neuro-medical unit with 42 private rooms, stroke centers at St. Joseph’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, a brain tumor clinic, a spine center and a balance disorder program. “The Carondelet Neurological Institute is part of an $80 million medical pavilion project currently under construction at St. Joseph’s Hospital,” said Rob Canina, director of Construction Management and Development for CHN. “With the neurological institute being a major component of this medical pavilion project at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the

For the past 30 years, Dr. Robert P. Goldfarb has been a leading neurosurgeon in Tucson and the Southern Arizona region. After graduating from the University of Arizona in 1958, Dr. Goldfarb went on to attend medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Goldfarb completed his internship, surgical residency and neurosurgical residency in Chicago, before returning to Tucson in 1967 for the practice of neurosurgery. He currently serves as a Neurosurgical consultant with Western Neurosurgery, Ltd. and is president of the group practice. Dr. Goldfarb is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Arizona Medical Association, Pima County Medical Society, and the Arizona Neurosurgical Society. Dr. Goldfarb currently serves as a member of the Arizona Medical Board (State Board of Medical Examiners) and is the immediate past Chairman of the Board. He is listed in the “Who’s Who in Healthcare and Medicine” and “Who’s Who in the World.”

A graduate of John Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. P. Eric Sipos is a leading neurosurgeon in North America.

Gregory R. Angle is Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital. Angle brings 24 years of healthcare experience in investor owned and non-profit health organizations. He joined Carondelet in 2000 and served as St. Mary’s Hospital CEO for six years.

He completed a residency and advanced specialty training in neurological surgery and a neuro-oncology research fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Sipos has served as clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, assistant professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, and assistant professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In addition to numerous academic honors and articles published in peerreviewed medical journals, Dr. Sipos has received recognition for his contributions to neurological research. In 2000, he also received the Army Achievement Medal. Board-certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Sipos is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Medical Association and Arizona Neurological Society. Dr. Sipos is a neurosurgeon with Western Neurosurgery, Ltd.

Prior to joining Carondelet Health Network, he served as the administrator of Seton Medical Center, a 505-bed regional hospital in Austin, Texas. Angle holds a masters degree in health services administration from Arizona State University. He is a Board member of the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association and a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Greg and his wife Nancy, have been married 24 years and have three children.

When Sheldon King and his wife, Xenia, a research psychologist in American Indian health at the University of Arizona, moved permanently to their home in Sonoita, Arizona in 2000, the former executive of academic medical centers knew that he would continue being involved in the healthcare community in Arizona. During his career, he was CEO at the University Hospital and Clinics of the University of California, San Diego; Stanford University Medical Center and CedarsSinai Medical Center, and Interim Director of the UCLA Medical System. In 2003 King met members of Carondelet Foundation’s Board at a social function and heard about the good work being done by the Foundation. He was intrigued. He then met with Life Trustees Mary Anne Fay and Chris Linscott who invited him to join the Foundation Board. King accepted without hesitation. King is serving a second term on the Board of Trustees and is chair of the Foundation’s Strategic Planning Committee as well as serving on its Executive Committee. Previously, he was a member of the Development Committee. He also served on the Quality Committee of the Carondelet Health Network’s Board of Trustees and now is on its Strategic Planning Committee. “Serving on the Foundation Board of Trustees has been a very fulfilling experience for me,” said King. “Part of it is feeling very positive about helping to further the mission of the Sisters and the spiritual aspect inherent to it. Not incidentally, the other aspect is the friendships formed with fellow Board members.”

He sees his contribution to the Foundation as part of an obligation to fulfill Carondelet Health Network’s long-term vision and establish a significant endowment for the Foundation. “In addition to raising funds for Carondelet, our responsibility as Trustees of the Foundation is to help educate our community about relevant issues such as diabetes and heart care,” he added. Although he is retired, King still serves as a consultant to a number of medical entities throughout the United States. He also serves on the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Executive Nurse Fellows Program, an advanced leadership program for nurses in senior executive roles who are aspiring to shape the healthcare system in the United States. He remains an active member of the Institute of Medicine and is a founding member of the Arizona Arts, Sciences and Technology Academy. “The Robert Wood Johnson program seeks to inspire experienced nurses in mid-career to develop and enhance their leadership skills so that they can move on to a regional or national level position and influence change,” explained King. “We, on the advisory board, also serve as advisors to these nurses,” he added. Outside the healthcare and medical community, King is active on the Tucson Zoological Society’s Board of Directors. Having lived in a number of cities with outstanding zoos, and developing a lifelong fascination with zoos, King took an African safari tour and realized that most people will never see the animals he saw.

So, his solution was to become active with the Zoological Society to ensure that Tucson children have a place where they can visit animals and learn about conservation. In his spare time, King enjoys spending time with his dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and practicing target shooting. He is an avid reader, and he and his wife are frequent concert-goers. King and his wife Xenia also spend time traveling all over the United States to visit their three grown children and three grandchildren.

Sister St. Joan Willert, CSJ, age 83, passed away on August 29, 2007 at Carondelet Center in Los Angeles where she entered into eternal life. Sister St. Joan Willert was a cherished member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet for almost 65 years. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in September 1942. Tucsonans remember Sister St. Joan as a Dean of Students at Salpointe High School in the late 1960s, and as a creative and dedicated leader of Carondelet Health Network for 22 years. She led Carondelet with great strength and constant faith, and will be remembered for her compassion, kindness and respect for all persons. THE EARLY YEARS Judith Anne Willert was born to Viola Fitzsimmons and Arthur Edgar Willert in Wheeling, West Virginia on June 13, 1924. Judy’s mother died when she was just 2-years-old, leaving her father to care for Judy, her older sister, Ruth, age 16; Elizabeth, age 9 and Arthur, age 4.

Judy’s childhood was spent moving around the country. Her father, a plastics manufacturer, set up plants in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, New York and California. Judy’s father always ensured the children had a Catholic school education. Judy had thought about a life of religious dedication ever since the fourth grade. She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet after completing high school. When it was time to receive the habit and a religious name, Judith wanted to be named after her favorite saint, Joan of Arc, and she became Sister St. Joan on March 19, 1943. Two years later, she made first vows followed by perpetual vows on August 15, 1948. Sister St. Joan’s gift for administration was recognized very early on. She was barely 30 years old when she was first named principal of a grade school. From then on, Sister St. Joan filled leadership roles.

She earned her Masters in Education and a California Lifetime Secondary Education Credential. She served as a teacher, principal and superior in California elementary schools for 20 years. In the late 1970s, she returned to school and earned a degree in hospital administration. SISTER ST. JOAN IN TUCSON Beginning in 1979, Sister St. Joan held top positions in healthcare as President and CEO of St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson. In 1985, she became Chairman of the Board of the Carondelet Healthcare Corporation. In this role, Sister St. Joan was responsible for the 14 hospitals sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet throughout the United States. The Diocese of Tucson, recognizing the impact of her work, wrote, “Sister St. Joan quietly makes a statement through her actions, which reveal the great importance of the religious life to her in all that she does.” And the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet said of Sister St. Joan, “Your compassion and joy are outstanding gifts which you give to all. We celebrate you as a beautiful religious woman and an outstanding leader.” In 1990, Sister St. Joan was elected by the CEOs of more than 100 hospitals in Arizona as the Chairman of the Board of the Arizona Hospital Association, stating, “Sister St. Joan plays a pivotal role on national healthcare reform committees, working diligently to maintain basic healthcare for all the neediest. Her tireless efforts have put a more caring face on healthcare.” She was an invited guest to Russia and hosted international visitors to Tucson to see innovative, quality heathcare in action. Sister St. Joan could always be counted on for her clear thinking, her great ability to listen attentively and bring about consensus, and her personal support for the mission and ministry of each organization she touched.

During her tenure, she managed a “minor miracle” bringing together St. Joseph’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital – known as east and west side competitors – under one umbrella as a hospital network. She was also instrumental in stabilizing the then financially vulnerable Holy Cross Hospital and securing its future and continued service to the community of Nogales. She worked with the community and the bishop in designing a relationship that enabled the hospital to survive and to eventually become a part of Carondelet Health Network. That wasn’t the end of creating new relationships, but rather the beginning as Carondelet continued to reach out to people in other areas in terms of geography and special needs. She was the guiding force behind Carondelet Hospice, St. Mary’s Burn Unit, Community Nursing Program and the creation of the Carondelet Medical Group.

SISTER’S RETIREMENT After 21 years of service to Tucson and Southern Arizona, Sister St. Joan retired in 2000 and moved from Tucson to the Provincial House at the Carondelet Center in Los Angeles. In that environment she interacted as effortlessly with the diverse group at the Center as she had with people from the many other professional and personal parts of her life. She participated in activities and helped wherever needed. Her Sisters were very comfortable asking her for help and she enjoyed being asked. She served humbly and with grace as long as she could. In March 2006, her health began to deteriorate rapidly. After giving of herself for so many years, she gently accepted the ministration of her Sisters until her passing.

In 1995, the Tucson Chamber of Commerce named Sister St. Joan Woman of the Year. The honors and awards she received from a variety of community organizations throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona are too many to list. Sister’s ministerial responsibilities were challenging and demanding. She was always a simple, fun-loving Sister of St. Joseph and always concerned about others. She never stepped out of her role as a true daughter of St. Joseph, even with her immense responsibilities. She may have wondered whether she could do what was being asked of her, but she most likely took those concerns to God, who took care of them – and her.

More than 250,000 Arizona children can’t visit the doctor’s office on a regular basis because they don’t have health insurance. And four Tucson zip codes rank in the state’s top 10 places where children qualify but aren’t enrolled for KidsCare, a low-cost health insurance program for families struggling to find affordable health coverage. While the state legislature has provided financial support for the KidsCare program, there has been no funding for an outreach component for several years, according to Maricela Solis de Kester, former manager of Community Benefits for Carondelet Health Network. Therefore, many who could qualify do not know the program exists, she said, adding that statistics from the governor’s office reveal that 119,000 children could be enrolled in KidsCare today if they knew about the program.

“The problem is that people just don’t know about the (KidsCare) program even though the help is out there for many Arizona children,” Solis de Kester said. “Carondelet has taken on a mission to help change these statistics in Southern Arizona.” This past year, Carondelet launched a KidsCare advocacy campaign designed to raise community awareness and encourage family enrollments during “Cover the Uninsured Week 2007.” As part of the campaign, KOLD-TV hosted an all-day telethon with a phone bank manned by Carondelet and the Covering Kids Coalition. Nearly 820 families called between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m to enroll. That figure jumped to more than 1,000 after a two-day enrollment fair at a local shopping mall. Since then, almost 1,700 people from 429 families have been successfully enrolled in KidsCare or another state-assisted program.

Carondelet’s work to reach those in need continues. Recently, Carondelet added two full-time associates, one in Tucson and one in Nogales, to identify and aid families in the KidsCare enrollment process. “We’re hopeful about the positive impact Carondelet’s outreach efforts are having on middle-income families who find themselves in the gap between qualifying for Medicaid and affording private health insurance,” Solis de Kester said. Carondelet also collaborated with local media partners to produce TV, cable, radio, Internet and print ads asking residents to contact their state legislators and show their support for outreach funding. The TV and radio commercials ran more than 1,300 times, reaching 90 percent of adults ages 25-54 at least once. Additionally, Carondelet successfully secured three half-hour community affairs programs with local TV affiliates focused on the subject of the uninsured and KidsCare, as well as multiple interviews on local newscasts.
