People, who apply for asylum in Austria due to various reasons, are dependant on support: It is necessary to quicckly provide for the basic needs of daily life and to grant accommodation in accordance with social and ethnic aspects.
For aliens who need support and protection and who receive support from the basic services programme (Grundversorgung) there are seven centres, which offer information, counselling and support. The assignment to these centres is based on the district or the sheltered accommodation, respectively
Since May 2004 the department “Grundversorgung Wien Landesleitstelle“ (“Central Vienna office for basic services”) has been responsible for the implementation. It organizes the following services for refugees: • • • • • • •
Accommodation Food Non-cash benefits and money for school requirements and clothing Health insurance and medical care Information, counselling and support Travel expenses for summons of authorities and transfers Counselling for people who would like to or have to return to their country

Aliens who need support and protection and who are entitled to grants ensuring basic services (Grundversorgung) either have private accommodation and receive fi nancial support for food and rent or – if necessary – are accommodated in sheltered homes where support is also provided.
