Fourth Sunday of Easter Jesus Christ promises eternal life to all who follow him. We follow Jesus, the Good Shepherd, by recognizing His voice in Scripture and in the teachings of the Church, by listening to Him speaking to our hearts in prayer, and by practicing His teachings in our daily lives. When the situation is appropriate, we share our faith with others. STB Confirmation ~ Eighth graders of the parish will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Friday, April 22 @ 6:30 PM. Confirmation practice will take place this Wednesday, April 20 @ 6:30 PM in the Church. All candidates and, if possible, sponsors should attend the rehearsal. There will be NO Mass or confessions Wednesday, April 20 due to Confirmation practice. FMCHS Annual Appeal ~ Father McGivney Catholic High School kicks off their Annual Appeal entitled, “Together We Grow” this weekend. Volunteers Needed ~ The Stewardship Council seeks parishioners who are willing to help with Creativity, Communications and Celebrations for the up and coming Fall Stewardship Series. MINISTRY MINUTES The Bread of Life Discourse

During the weekday Masses leading up to this Sunday we have been reading the Bread of Life teaching in the Gospel of John. Unlike the other Gospels, John does not speak of the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper event but speaks of Jesus’ love for his disciples and of service to each other as exemplifies in his washing the feet of the Apostles. John uses a time immediately following the miracle of the loaves and fishes to teach us about the Lord’s gift of himself in the Eucharist. (JN 6: 22-69)

I remember as a child playing Follow the Leader on the playground at school. Different than Simon Says, we moved all over the playground and simply imitated whoever was the leader in the front. I liked this game because no one got kicked out if you did the wrong thing, and everyone got a chance to be the leader. There were no hard and fast rules. There was a sense of freedom in the game even though you were following and imitating someone else. However, it was important to listen and to watch so that you knew what to do and where to go. Who and what we follow in our lives makes a difference. Today we can “follow” someone on twitter and other social media apps. Even with that, who we follow can make a difference on where we want to go in our lives. Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. We are reminded of the blessings we receive when we follow Jesus. In the Gospel, the writer John knows that the people he is writing for understand what it means to be sheep following the shepherd. The sheep follow the shepherd because the shepherd cares for them and the sheep know they will be led to the good that they need, such as food, water and safe places to roam. The Good Shepard leads us to places where our spirits are fed and our hearts can safely roam. Where does your heart roam safely? Where can you go to hear God’s voice? If we listen well and strive to imitate Jesus in our actions, we will find many places where we feel secure and taken care of by our Lord. Revelation 7:17 reminds us, “For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

After the miracle of the loaves and fishes the crowd follows Jesus to Capernaum. While in the synagogue at Capernaum our Lord teaches that the loaves and fishes and even the manna that their ancestors ate during the Exodus filled only their physical need and they would be hungry again. Jesus said that his followers must eat his very flesh and drink his very blood to fulfill their spiritual hunger and have eternal life. The words he used, according to the Gospel of John, were very graphic and specific about this requirement to eat his flesh and drink his blood. Several of his disciples no longer followed him after that teaching because eating human flesh was forbidden by Jewish law and their faith was not strong enough to see Jesus as the Son of God nor could they anticipate partaking in the flesh and blood of the risen and glorified Christ. We are asked to believe exactly the same thing! We are asked to believe that our receiving Holy Communion is, in fact, eating the flesh and blood of our risen and glorified Lord. We are asked to approach every reception of Holy Communion with awe at receiving the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus and entering into full communion with our Lord. Think about it – pray about it – believe it! Alleluia, He is risen, Alleluia! ~Deacon Dan Free Lunch Fridays Date Change for May—The next date St. Boniface will serve for Free Lunch Friday is Friday, May 6. Please note this is not the usual schedule. Our June date will be Friday, June 10 (the second Friday). St. Boniface Free Lunch Friday community outreach always welcomes new volunteers and monetary contributions. Contact Robin Black-Rubenstein at the parish office with any questions or to volunteer. Email [email protected]. WALK FIT— Outdoor Walk-fit has resumed. Come join us on Mondays from 8:00-9:00 a.m. We begin with a short prayer/reflection before walking outdoors. Meet in the lobby of the church. Inclement weather cancels the walk.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED For the SAK (Serving Area Kids) program SAK is a summer sack lunch program that serves youth in Edwardsville. The area churches combine efforts to be at six area locations every day during the summer months so that children who are not receiving school lunch will be able to have that meal. St. Boniface will serve on Fridays starting when school is out for the summer until it begins again in the fall (exact dates will follow soon). We need approximately 12 volunteers each Friday from St. Boniface from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If we get enough people to volunteer you would not need to serve every Friday. The lunches are prepared at Immanuel UMC for distribution to the 6 area locations. The program is also accepting donations either monetary or snacks/drinks for the lunches. Stewardship It is not easy being Christian and Catholic in today’s world. Our society, because of the critical nature of the media in large part, tends to view people of faith and morals with some distrust. That is a challenge for us. Paul and Barnabas experience something similar in today’s First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. The people of Antioch in Pisidia “expel (them) from the territory.” No one likes or appreciates rejection. It is humiliating and discouraging. There may be times in our own lives when we follow firmly our Catholic beliefs and experience something similar. However, like Paul and Barnabas, we need to become even more determined in our desire to be a Disciple of the Lord. In their case, they moved on to Iconium and continued their ministry and their message. In fact, Holy Scripture adds, “The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” We, too, need to seek that joy and to understand that we have been blessed and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Blessed Mother Teresa said, “Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness.” Like Paul and Barnabas, and Mother Teresa, we need to seek and utilize God’s strength. Communal services are celebrated during Advent and Lent. Marriage ~ If you are considering marriage, a minimum of six months is required for preparation. A wedding date cannot be set until after the first meeting with the pastor. At that time, the diocesan and parish guidelines will be explained. Anointing of the Sick ~ Parishioners who are seriously or critically ill, or having surgery, should contact the pastor for the celebration of the sacrament. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults ~ The R.C.I.A. is an ongoing formation process for adults who are interested in becoming a Catholic and would like to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist.
