Stanford Football Hopes to Take Another Step Forward in 2008 Quarterback Tavita Pritchard led Stanford to victory over top-ranked USC in his first collegiate start.
F
ew will argue Stanford was a much-improved football team in 2007 under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh. The final record of 4-8, which included an epic upset victory over top-ranked USC and a notable win in the season finale against defending Pac-10 Conference cochampion California, was a three-game improvement from the previous year, when the Cardinal struggled to a 1-11 overall mark, including 1-8 in conference play. A similar leap this year would land Stanford in a bowl game for the first time since the 2001 season. Statistically, the Cardinal improved in virtually every category, most notably on defense, where Stanford finished with 37 sacks on the year, the fifth-highest total in the Pac-10, ninth-best in the nation and 23 more than the previous year’s total of 14. Not to be overlooked is the fact Stanford went from -11 to +3 in turnover margin, which was the second best mark in the Pac-10 behind Oregon. Next steps? A healthier Stanford team that includes 43 returning letterwinners (24 offense, 18 defense, 1 specialist) and 20 returning starters (9 offense, 11 defense) along with familiarity of new offensive and defensive systems, should lead to more consistency across the board. However, at the end of the day, Harbaugh, a 15-year NFL quarterback, knows his team will be judged by one thing – results. “Everything that occurred in our first season is water under the bridge, gone – never to be replayed,” said Harbaugh. “However, we can learn from the past. My squad and I understand that our goals have not been reached. “The greatest improvements made in a program come from season one to season two. Nothing stands still; you are either getting better or getting worse. It’s important to ask ourselves every day, ‘Are we getting closer to winning the Pac-10?” It starts today. “After wins over USC and Cal and the limited success we had last season, we can’t allow ourselves to feel comfortable. We have to challenge ourselves in the areas that need to be addressed in order to move forward.” Offensively, Stanford welcomes back 24 letterwinners from last year’s unit that finished last in the Pac-10 in scoring offense (19.6 points per game) and total offense

(322.5). After going through the growing pains of learning a new offensive system under Harbaugh, Stanford hopes familiarity of a new system, stability at quarterback and a healthy backfield will pave the way to a more consistent offensive attack in 2008. Stanford is unsettled at the quarterback position, which is not being viewed as a big concern heading into fall camp, as the Cardinal feels it has three legitimate options with seniors Tavita Pritchard, Michigan-transfer Jason Forcier, along with junior Alex Loukas, competing for the starting role. Pritchard has the edge in experience, having made seven starts among his nine appearances last year, including an upset over USC in his first career start. Forcier saw brief time in a reserve role with the Wolverines in 2006, while Loukas has been an understudy to Trent Edwards, T.C. Ostrander and Pritchard in his first two years on The Farm. Regardless of who earns the start in the August 28 opener against Oregon State, Stanford will be left with two very capable backup signal-callers, which is a necessity over the course of a rigorous Pac-10 schedule. Stanford is banking on a healthy backfield of Anthony Kimble (115 for 509, 8 TDs) and Toby Gerhart (12 for 140, 1 TD) to shoulder the majority of the run production after both players missed significant time due to injuries last season. Kimble saw action in just seven games, which was all he needed to lead Stanford in rushing and all-purpose yardage (136.9 per game). Gerhart was well on his way to possibly shattering Stanford’s single-game rushing record in the second game of last season against San Jose State, as he racked up 140 yards on 12 carries, but suffered a season-ending injury in the third quarter. Injuries to Kimble and Gerhart created an opportunity for Jeremy Stewart, who finished his freshman year as the team’s second leading rusher with 343 yards on 105 carries (3.3 average). Stewart gained confidence as the season progressed, rushing for a combined 178 yards over the final three games of the season. Establishing depth at wide receiver will be a main point of emphasis, as the Cardinal looks to offset the losses of three of
its top four receivers from a year ago. Stanford will count on junior Richard Sherman (39 for 651, 4 TDs) and promising sophomores Doug Baldwin (11 for 93) and Ryan Whalen (1 for 11) to offset the losses of Mark Bradford (51 for 642, 3 TDs) and Evan Moore (39 for 481) in the receiving corps. A big play receiver, Sherman led the team in receiving yardage and touchdown receptions last season, while Baldwin and Whalen saw time in a reserve role. The Cardinal returns two tight ends in seniors Jim Dray (9 for 116, 1 TD) and Austin Gunder (10 for 86, 2 TDs), however, Dray is a question mark heading into the season as he continues to heal from a season-ending knee injury suffered in the TCU game. Notre Dametransfer Konrad Reuland figures to play a large role in the receiving game starting with the fourth game of the season at Washington. Defensively, Stanford welcomes back 18 letterwinners, including 11 starters, from last year’s unit that was more improved than numbers alone might indicate. The most notable change in personnel is on the sideline, where the Cardinal welcomes 38-year coaching veteran Ron Lynn to the position of co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. The Cardinal features two preseason honors candidates on defense. Clinton Snyder (63-33-96), who is on preseason watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik Awards, leads a talented group of starting linebackers that includes senior Pat Maynor (47-4188) and sophomore Chike Amajoyi (30-17-47). Safety Bo McNally (71-43-114), last year’s leading tackler and a candidate for the Ronnie Lott Award, heads up an experienced secondary that includes returning starters Wopamo Osaisai (26-19-45), Austin Yancy (36-13-49) and Kris Evans (27-13-40). With defensive ends Pannel Egboh (33-16-49) and Erik Lorig (23-14-37), along with tackle Ekom Udofia (21-10-31) returning to occupy starting roles upfront, Stanford is optimistic the improvement this unit showed a year ago will carry over into the 2008 season. Stanford’s kicking game will be entirely rebuilt following the losses of four-year starting punter Jay Ottovegio and placekicker Derek Belch.

Junior Richard Sherman (6-3, 191) ranks as the team’s returning receiver after catching 39 passes for a team-high 651 yards and four touchdowns a year ago. A gifted and speedy receiver with big play ability, Sherman topped the team in receiving yardage six times last season and enjoyed three, 100-yard games. With 73 receptions for 1,232 yards and seven touchdowns over his first two seasons, he is well on his way to making an impact on Stanford’s all-time career receiving charts. Establishing depth among the wide receivers will be a key for Stanford this season, following the loss of starters Mark Bradford and Evan Moore, who combined for 90 catches and 1,123 receiving yards last year. However, the Cardinal is hoping sophomores Doug Baldwin (5-11, 182) and Ryan Whalen (6-2, 203), along with fifth-year senior Nate Wilcox-Fogel (6-1, 186) and junior Stephen
HISTORY
As is the case with the running back position, health will play a large role in Stanford’s tight end situation. Jim Dray (6-5, 255) is listed atop the depth chart, however, his status is uncertain heading into fall camp after he suffered a seasonending knee injury in the sixth game of last season against TCU. If healthy, Dray gives the Cardinal a dependable pass catcher who has the size and skills to be considered among the best at his position in the Pac-10 Conference. If Dray is unable to answer the call, Stanford does have quality options in seniors Austin Gunder (6-5, 235) and Tom McAndrew (6-5, 261), sophomore Coby Fleener (6-6, 228) and Notre Dame transfer Konrad Reuland (6-6, 260). Gunder, who started the last six games of last season after Dray was lost for the year, finished with 10 catches

for 86 yards and two touchdowns. A fifth-year senior, he started his collegiate career as a linebacker and saw most of his action on special teams before working his way into the tight end position. Fleener did not see action as a true freshman last season but has excellent size for the position and enough speed that may allow him to work in at wideout. McAndrew is a converted linebacker and defensive end who made the switch to tight end midway through last season. Reuland joins the Stanford program after spending the last two seasons at Notre Dame, where he played in seven games as a freshman and three games last season for the Irish. A physically gifted player who possesses excellent size and ball skills, Reuland was a blue-chip recruit out of Mission Viejo (Calif.) High School and should be a major factor in Stanford’s tight end fortunes for years to come.

With Kimble and Gerhart both sidelined with injuries for the majority of last season, Jeremy Stewart (6-0, 210) was called upon to fill the void in Stanford’s running game. He finished as the team’s second-leading ground gainer with 343 yards and two touchdowns and gained confidence as the season progressed, as he combined for 178 yards in the final three games of the season against Washington State (54), Notre Dame (54) and California (70). Sophomore Owen Marecic (6-1, 237) and senior Josh Catron (6-0, 237) figure to see the majority of action at fullback. Marecic started all 12 games last season and earned honorable mention All-Pacific-10 honors, despite the fact he carried the ball only five times for six yards. Catron, who enters his fourth year in the program, is a converted linebacker who has seen most of his action thus far on Stanford’s special teams units. Junior Blaise Johnson (5-11, 190) figures to add depth.
2007 REVIEW
Stanford has plenty of options at running back – hopefully healthy ones. Fifth-year senior Anthony Kimble (6-1, 210) has made 24 starts at running back over the last three years and has led the team in rushing each of the past two seasons. However, he has missed eight games due to injury over the last three seasons, including five contests a year ago. Last season, he finished with 509 yards (72.7 per game) and led the team in rushing in six of the seven games he played. His eight rushing touchdowns were the most by a Stanford back since Brian Allen and Kerry Carter had nine rushing TDs in 2001. A multi-purpose threat out of the backfield, Kimble has tallied 45 career catches for 365 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Junior Toby Gerhart (6-1, 228) hopes to be fully recovered from a season-ending knee injury suffered in the second game of last season against San Jose State, after he had rushed for a career-best 140 yards on just 12 carries. A tough, aggressive hard-nosed runner, Gerhart finished the 2006 season as Stanford’s second leading rusher, topping the team in rushing yards on four occasions as a natural freshman.

SEASON OUTLOOK
The competition for the starting quarterback position figures to be the most-watched battle of the fall camp, with seniors Tavita Pritchard (6-4, 198) and Jason Forcier (6-2, 213) and junior Alex Loukas (6-4, 223) all vying for the starting role. Regardless of which player wins the starting job, Stanford will have quality depth at the position which will serve the Cardinal well during a long Pac-10 Conference season. Pritchard has the edge in experience after making nine appearances and seven starts a year ago, completing 97-of-194 (50%) of his passes for 1,114 yards and five touchdowns. He secured his spot in Stanford football lore when he engineered an epic, 24-23 upset of topranked USC in his first career start, connecting with Mark Bradford on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 0:49 left to seal one of the biggest upsets in college football history. Forcier sat out last season after transferring from the University of Michigan, where he saw action in six games as a reserve quarterback in 2006. He adjusted well to a new offensive scheme during spring drills and impressed coaches with his quickness and mobility. After spending his first two seasons at Stanford as an understudy to starters Trent Edwards, T.C. Ostrander and Pritchard, Loukas demonstrated marked improvement, poise and confidence during the spring, indicating he is ready to have a significant impact on Stanford’s quarterback scenario this season. “All three quarterbacks will be given ample opportunity to show what they can do during fall workouts,” said Harbaugh. “Our team feels confident that anyone of those three players can help us win football games.” Heralded freshman Andrew Luck (6-4, 215), who was rated as the fourth-best prep quarterback in the nation by Scout.com after passing for 2,684 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior at Stratford High School in Houston, Tex., will undoubtedly figure large in Stanford’s future quarterback plans. Junior Nicolas Ruhl (6-3, 208) and sophomore L.D. Crow (6-3, 230) will add depth to a very competitive quarterback situation.
INTRODUCTION
Quarterback
Outland Trophy and Rimington Award candidate Alex Fletcher anchors the offensive line. Pannel Egboh (right) has led defensive linemen in tackles in each of the past two years.
Carr (6-3, 222), will play larger roles in the passing game this season. Baldwin eyes a starting role opposite Sherman after catching 11 balls for 93 yards in 12 games last season. He was also a valuable contributor on special teams, leading the Cardinal in kickoff returns (23) and kickoff return yardage (555). Whalen, a product of Monte Vista High School in Danville, saw action in all 12 games last season and caught one pass against Washington State. Wilcox-Fogel, a fifthyear senior who made the team as a walk-on in 2004 out of nearby Menlo High School in Atherton, has lettered each of the last two years.
Offensive Line Stanford’s offensive line is long on experience, with four of the five starting roles expected to be occupied by seniors who have combined to make 72 career starts. However, the Cardinal must replace Tim Mattran, who started all 12 games last season at center. Outland Trophy and Rimington Award candidate Alex Fletcher (6-3, 298) moves back to his natural center position after playing guard last year. A four-year starter with 32 career starts under his belt, Fletcher earned second team All-Pac 10 honors last season after making 12 starts on a much-improved offensive line. He will be backed up by Chase Beeler (6-3, 276), who sat out last season after transferring from Oklahoma. Seniors Allen Smith (6-4, 292) and Chris Marinelli (6-7, 302) are expected to hold down the left and right tackle positions, respectively. Smith, who has made 23 starts over the last three seasons, is a bit of a question mark heading into camp after tearing his patella tendon in the fourth game of last season against Oregon. If Smith is sidelined for an extended amount of time, senior Ben Muth (6-6, 297), who made nine starts in Smith’s absence last year, is expected to get the starting nod.
34 • WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM
Marinelli started all 12 games at right tackle last season and now has 17 starting assignments on his ledger dating back to the 2006 season. Senior Gustav Rydstedt (6-3, 289) will make the transition from defensive line, where he played 35 games and made eight starts, to the offensive line, where he is penciled in to start at left guard. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Rydstedt is an aggressive, smart and athletic player who picked up the nuances of his new position very quickly in spring workouts. He will be backed up by junior Bert McBride (6-3, 285). Junior Andrew Phillips (6-5, 294), who has made tremendous strides over the last three years, is expected to hold down the starting right guard position. He will be backed up by junior Joe Dembesky (6-5, 286) and sophomore Brad Hallick (6-6, 287). Senior Matt Kopa (6-6, 285) will make the switch from defensive to offensive line and will see plenty of playing time at both right and left tackle. Sophomore Tyler Mabry (6-7, 293) also provides versatility up front as a swing tackle. Sophomore George Halamandaris (6-7, 287) will work with Marinelli and Kopa at right guard.
Defense Defensive Line Stanford returns five players with starting experience to a defensive front that demonstrated marked improvement last season from the previous campaign. After employing a three-man front in 2006, the decision to switch to a four-man front paid dividends, as the Cardinal finished fifth in the Pac-10 in sacks with 37 after totaling just nine in 2006. Stanford averaged 3.08 sacks a game a year ago, which ranked third in the Pac-10 and 11th nationally. The Cardinal also recorded 101 tackles for loss a year ago, good for third in the Pac-10 and fifth nationally. Stanford’s projected front four includes returning starters Pannel Egboh (6-6, 270) at left end, senior Erik Lorig (6-4, 257) at right end, senior Ekom Udofia (6-2,
310) at nose tackle, along with junior Brian Bulke (6-4, 269), who has the inside track for the starting role at defensive tackle after starting the final two games at the position to close out last season. Veteran Levirt Griffin (6-4, 269), who started six games last season, also figures largely in the mix. Egboh, a fifth-year senior who has made 24 straight starts over the last two seasons, has the size, athleticism, quickness and experience to develop into one of the Pac10’s best pass rushers. He enters his senior season with 109 career tackles and ranks as Stanford’s active career leader in tackles-for-loss with 21.5. He has led all Cardinal defensive linemen in tackles each of the last two seasons after finishing with a career-best 49 stops last year. He also finished ninth in the Pac-10 with 13.5 tackles-for-loss. Egboh earned Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording a career-best 10 tackles, a career-high-tying 2.5 TFL (-13 yds), 1.5 sacks (-11 yds) and his first blocked kick on an extra point attempt in Stanford’s upset victory over second-ranked USC. Lorig appeared in all 12 games and made nine starts at right defensive end after making the transition from tight end during spring workouts. A tough and talented high-energy player, Lorig should be able to improve on his numbers (37 tackles, 7.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks) from a year ago with a year of starting experience under his belt. Udofia saw action in seven games and made six starts, four at right defensive end and two at nose tackle, before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. One of the top recruits in the nation at his position in 2005, coaches feel he still has the ability to develop into one of the Pac-10’s top defensive linemen. Bulke showed continued improvement through the course of last season and worked his way into a starting role at defensive tackle for the final two games against Notre Dame and California. Griffin, who has played in all 24 games and has made six starts over his first two years at Stanford, figures to see plenty of playing time up front, working mostly behind Egboh at left end. He started five of the first six games of last season and also earned a start against Washington State in Game 10, finishing with 19 tackles, 2.5 tackles-forloss and one sack. Matt Masifilo (6-3, 285), who was rated as the seventhbest defensive lineman recruit in the nation coming out of Campbell High School in Ewa Beach, Hawai’i in 2006, will be counted on to provide quality depth at both nose tackle and defensive tackle. Masifilo did not see game action as a natural freshman but should be a fixture on the defensive front for years to come. Sophomore Tom Keiser (6-5, 242), a highly-rated defensive line prospect out of North Allegheny in Wexford, Penn., should also factor into the depth on the front four, working mostly behind Lorig at right end. Sophomore Matt Bentler (6-5, 292), junior Derek Hall (6-5, 278) and senior James McGillicuddy (6-3, 291) round out Stanford’s defensive line personnel.
Linebacker The linebacker position figures to be the strength of Stanford’s defense, as the Cardinal returns three starters from a year ago in Clinton Snyder (6-4, 231), Chike Amajoyi (6-0, 232) and Pat Maynor (6-2, 220). Snyder, who is listed on preseason watch lists for both the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik Award as one of the top linebackers in the nation heading into the season, sets the tone for Stanford’s defense with his physical presence and leadership skills. He has started
Skaufel, who made 35 tackles last season as a natural freshman, is coming off an excellent spring and will push Yancy for the starting job at free safety. Junior C.J. Easter (6-0, 188), junior Tyler Porras (6-2, 190) along with sophomore Sean Wiser (6-2, 193) will compete for spots on the depth chart.

Stanford’s special teams units will be virtually rebuilt from last year’s version, especially in the kicking game with the loss of four-year punter Jay Ottovegio and placekicker Derek Belch. Sophomore David Green (6-1, 193) along with freshmen Matt Zubyk (6-2, 185) and Daniel Zychlinski (6-3, 215) will compete for the starting punter position. Senior Aaron Zagory (6-0, 180) hopes to reclaim the starting kicker’s duties he held down two years ago. Green may also figure into the kicking plans, as well. Walk-on Travis Golia (6-0, 185) may also get a look during fall camp. Of the three kickers, only Zagory has intercollegiate experience. He held down the starting placekicker duties in 2006 and made 8-of-13 field goals tries while converting 13-of-15 PATs, but lost his job to Belch last season. Senior Anthony Kimble, along with sophomores Doug Baldwin and Corey Gatewood, figure to play a significant role in Stanford’s return game. Baldwin averaged 24.1 yards per kickoff return last season (555 in 23) while Kimble was also effective, averaging 21.4 yards per return (385 in 18).
SEASON OUTLOOK
returned his only interception 31 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter in Stanford’s upset victory over USC. Originally recruited as a wide receiver (he made six starts at WR in 2006), coaches feel the lanky junior will combine his natural skills with added confidence to develop into a top coverman. Along with McNally, Osaisai ranks as Stanford’s most experienced player in the secondary with 13 career starts. He played in all 12 games and made seven starts at left cornerback last season, finishing with 45 tackles, including 26 solo efforts. He possibly made the most strides of any player during spring drills and was selected as the team’s most improved player at the conclusion of spring workouts. The Pac-10’s 100 meter track champion, he continues Stanford’s tradition of outstanding two-sport athletes. Junior Mark Mueller (6-3, 193), one of the team’s most versatile players, figures into the picture at left cornerback behind Osasai after transitioning from wide receiver during spring drills. A tall, lanky player, he will also be a valuable contributor on Stanford’s special teams unit. The starting job at right corner will likely go to either Evans or Gatewood, although the two could be interchangeable as the season progresses. Evans saw action in all 12 games last season, earning starts in each of the last four contests. He finished the season with 40 tackles (27 solo), ranked second on the team with seven pass breakups, one TFL and one forced fumble vs. TCU. Gatewood moves back to his natural cornerback position this season after seeing action in 11 games as a backup running back in ’07. He possesses as much natural ability as any of Stanford’s defensive backs and needs only time to develop into a top-flight Pac-10 cornerback.

all but two games over the last two seasons and earned honorable mention All-Pac 10 honors in 2007 after finishing among the conference leaders in virtually every defensive category, including fumbles forced (4-t-1st), tackles-for-loss (14.5-5th), fumbles recovered (3-t-4th), sacks (8.0-t-7th) and tackles (89-t-9th). A fifth-year senior, Maynor has played in 30 games and has made 20 starts over the last two seasons and is tied for second on Stanford’s active career list with 135 tackles and 19.5 tackles-for-loss. He finished third on the team last year in total tackles (88) and led the team with a careerbest 16.5 tackles-for-loss. His 1.50 TFL per game average ranked second in the Pac-10 and tied for 12th nationally. Amajoyi made an immediate contribution last season as a natural freshman, finishing with 47 tackles, 9.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks. He also tied for the team lead and ranked fifth in the Pac-10 with three fumble recoveries. Amajoyi made a seamless transition from outside linebacker to the middle during spring drills and seems poised to develop into a major force this season. Will Powers (6-4, 242), Nick Macaluso (6-3, 236) and Max Bergen (6-2, 218) also figure prominently into the linebacker picture. Powers, a local product from nearby Foster City who prepped at Serra High School, is expected to see most of his time backing up Snyder. A physically-gifted player, he has appeared in 23 of 24 games over the last two seasons, including four starts. Macaluso made significant strides last season as a viable defensive contributor, playing in nine games and earning six starts. He finished with 23 tackles (15 solo), 2.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack to earn Sporting News All-Pac-10 freshman team honors. The Middletown, N.J.native finished with a career-high six tackles, including three solo stops, in Stanford’s upset win over USC. He should see most of his time this season working with Amajoyi at middle linebacker. Bergen, who coaches feel might be the quickest player among the linebackers, saw plenty of reps during spring drills and is slated to see most of his time working behind Maynor at WLB. Senior Thaddeus Chase (6-0, 210), junior Andrew Fowler (6-2, 232) and sophomore Johnathan Frink (6-2, 224) add quality depth to this talented unit.

Despite the losses of part-time starters Nick Sanchez (53 tackles; team-high four interceptions) and Tim Sims (31 tackles), Stanford’s secondary is also long on experience, with veterans strong safety Bo McNally (6-0, 208), free safety Austin Yancy (6-3, 215) and left cornerback Wopamo Osaisai (5-11, 199) having combined for 38 career starts over the last three seasons. Stanford also boasts quality depth in the defensive backfield in senior Kris Evans (6-0, 182) and sophomore Corey Gatewood (5-11, 186), who are battling for the starting job at right corner along with Taylor Skaufel (6-0, 192), who will make a strong push for starting time at free safety. McNally, who is included on the preseason watch list for the Ronnie Lott Trophy, earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors last season after starting all 12 games at free safety and leading the team in tackles (114). The leader of the Cardinal secondary, McNally led or co-led the team in tackles seven times last season and ranked second on the squad with two interceptions. He ranks second among Stanford’s active players with 135 career tackles. Yancy started all 12 games at strong safety last season and finished with 47 tackles and five pass breakups. He
