Course Description This course will focus on the development of the primary language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing using the textbooks Lectura y Escritura Avanzadas, and Aspectos del Mundo Hispano. These skills will be developed through the study of authentic materials and the analysis of their cultural, social and historical context. This course aims to have the students achieve a level of communication that is clear, organized and effective. The students will be able to appropriately respond and express themselves in a variety of contexts. Core Goals Develop the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Communicate effectively in real life situations to meet a wide variety of purposes. Students as speakers will take on full responsibility for engaging, maintaining, and furthering the conversation. Explore different aspects of the culture of Spain and Latin America. Prepare for the IB Diploma examinations. Expectations You will read, speak, write and listen to different types texts in Spanish. You will be expected to communicate in Spanish at all times. You are also encouraged to find other ways to use the language outside the classroom, as in restaurants, watching TV in Spanish, listening to music, watching a documentary or movie, etc. Studying vocabulary and grammar on a daily basis is essential in order to gain fluency. RESPECT: Above all, a high level of respect in the classroom must be maintained at all times. All students must respect the subject, themselves, classmates, and me. NO PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism, in any form, will not be tolerated. It is important that I read your work, not a copy from another source. HOMEWORK: Homework is a very important part in studying a foreign language. It is essential that you practice vocabulary and complete daily homework in order to review and to reinforce what we learn in class. It must be turned in complete, neat, and in a timely fashion. Absence Policy Remember that when you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to find out what work you have missed and to arrange a make-up time if you miss a quiz. Be sure to talk to me about your absence so that we can work out a plan together. Get notes from a classmate, and check the “graded tray” in the classroom for any worksheets or assignments. Late Work Policy Late work will be accepted according to the school policy (a 10% reduction for each day it is late). Getting Help You can come for extra help during elective of during my office hours. This can help you to reinforce new concepts, or to review already learned material.
