NAVRATRI CELEBRATIONS
GODDESS, GARBA & GLAMOUR MUMBAI SET TO KEEP UP TO THE REPUTE OF BEING ONE OF MOST FAMOUS HOT SPOTS FOR NAVRATRI VENUES
Janhavi Samant
MUMBAI: Navratri, in honour of Goddess Durga, is one of the much-awaited festivals in Mumbai. The nine-day festival, which will begin from October 13, is celebrated with the traditional Gujarati dances of 'garba' and 'dandiya raas'. Mumbai has one of the most famous venues and organisers for dandiya raas and garba. "Singers like Falguni Pathak, Preeti and Pinky, Bhumi Trivedi, Manish Parekh and his band perform in dandiya raas in Mumbai. This year Falguni is performing in Ghatkopar's Kukreja ground," said Maitri Parekh, Veera Desai resident. She said, in Andheri, Bhavan's college ground in DN Nagar is a must visit during the nine day celebration. Parekh explained that the original folk dances of garba raas started as a depiction of the nine-day battle between Ambaji (Goddess Durga) and mahisasur- the devil. "Over the
years, the importance of garba dance has got convoluted. Today, it is only treated as a means of entertainment and dating," she added. Another must visit venue for Navratri is Karmveer Sports Complex. The plush Andheri-based club was inaugurated by the Governor of Maharashtra on May 25, 2014. This year, they plan to have a five-day Dandiya raas function in the club lawn with live Orchestra and Singers from Indian Idol, Sa Re Ga Ma, etc fame. Celebrities too have assured of their presence at the event. The Dandiya raas nights will be on 16-18 and 2021 of October. The other must-visit places around Andheri for dandiya raas are Tulip Star Hotel in Juhu, Jasodha Rang Mandir, Vile Parle (W) and Goregon Sports Club, Link Road, Malad. The cost of a pass for dandiya raas can vary from Rs 700- 3,500 depending on the performers. “Weekend passes are costlier. In

JUHU: The heat in Mumbai is on a tremendous rise. Though you may not want to go out in the heat, you might want to reconsider your choice, after you get to know Ranjit Singh, 28, a rickshaw driver who lives in Juhu. Ranjit's rickshaw is no ordinary rickshaw, and has almost everything that you would need for a comfortable and luxurious ride. His rickshaw has four fans, a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a dustbin, tissue papers, ashtray, lighter, toothpicks, cold water, music system, mobile charging facility and most importantly, free Wi-Fi. Customers need to pay the same fare as they would to any other rickshaw driver. He soon plans to fix an LCD TV. These are good enough reasons for anyone to take a ride in his rickshaw at any time of the day. He calls his rickshaw 'AC rickshaw - Dekho Magar Payar Se'. “Woh toh RTO allow nahi karta, nahi toh AC laga deta (The RTO does not permit, or else I would have fixed an air conditioner),” said Ranjit. Atithi Devo Bhava (guest is God) is taken very seriously by Singh. He thinks his costumers are his guests and he treats
them like God. “I think customer satisfaction is very important and when the costumer travels in my rickshaw I see to it that they are happy and well served,” Ranjit expressed. Ranjit has plenty of fans and committed customers who give him a call for a ride and also give him a tip for providing such facilities. “I have a lot of costumers who have taken my number and give me a call to pick them up because they like travelling in my rickshaw. People appreciate what I have done in my rickshaw and it feels good when people do that. Sometimes college girls click selfies with me, thanking me for the facilities. And then there others who tip me for the facilities,” said Ranjit. His counterparts mock at him be saying that he eventually earns as much as they do. “Once when I was travelling, a biker met with a minor accident. I immediately rushed to him with my first aid kit and helped him. I felt at peace that day. It is okay if others mock at me for providing all the facilities. I know these things are
useful. I see to it that I treat everyone with respect because my father once told me respect begets respect. I have never come across any customer who has insulted me or treated me badly. Even the police and the traffic police like me and treat me respectfully.” Ranjit who hails from Bihar, came to Mumbai six years ago. He has been a rickshaw driver since and really enjoys his work. He has never refused a ride to commuters. Ranjit being the Good Samaritan that he is, wants to be a part of Bollywood if given a chance and wants to ironically play a goon.
MUMBAI: Devendra Fadnavis, CM of Maharashtra announced a slew of measures being taken by the state government for giving a boost to hospitality and tourism sector. The announcement was made when he inaugurated the first edition of Maharashtra International Travel Mart (MITM) last week. Fadnavis said, “The number of hotel licences have been reduced from 71 to 25 and further consolidated into 6, for which only 1 form has to be filled on the digital platform. The Government of Maharashtra has also relaxed the regulatory framework for film shooting. Film-makers have to apply online and if they don't get a response in 7 days, it will be deemed granted.” “Mumbai can be a city for live performances. Organising a live show in Mumbai is a tough task, because of the number of permissions required. We want to promote Mumbai and Maharashtra as event destinations. Therefore, they will be designated as event destinations and no permissions will be required. The organisers just need to inform the government about the event they are organising.” He added, “Within a week we will circulate the draft to all stakeholders in the travel and tourism industry. The policy should be tourist-operator friendly and actually be aimed at ease of doing business” said Fadanvis. CM also launched the new website

GODDESS, GARBA & GLAMOUR case you are planning a dandiya night with friends or office colleagues, ensure you take it on weekdays and reach the venue by 8pm to make the most of it. Due to 10pm deadline, music stops,” said Mitali Porecha, Veera Desai resident. She said Borivali's Kora Kendra, Goregaon Sports Club, Mhada ground in Kandivali are the other must visit places during Navratri. Navratri is also an important festival for Bengalis who celebrate it from the fifth day. If you are foodie, then Bengali Durga puja pandals are a must visit place this year. “Abhijeet Bhattacharya's Lokhadawala Durgo Pujo is one of the biggest Bengali Durgo Puja pandals in Mumbai. Tulip Star in Juhu also hosts Rani Mukherjee's Durga puja. These are the
two places where along with star gazing, you can enjoy the food and cultural programs too,” said Sushmita Mitra, Lokhandwala resident. She said that while in the afternoons, people can visit these places for a free bhog, evenings are more of cultural programmes. “In the afternoon, a Bengali Durga puja pandal will offer bhog that includes khichadi, mixed vegetable curry, sweets, fried brinjal etc. One can also enjoy the food stalls for some nice nonvegetarian Bengali dishes,” said Mitra. So don the traditional finery and get ready to welcome the Goddess Durga with all the pomp and fanfare that is the hallmark of Navratri.

The app will soon be accessible offline, too. Valsa Nair Singh, IAS, Secretary Tourism & Culture, Government of Maharashtra, said, “Tourism is a people-based economic activity. We are poised for exponential growth. The vision and support of our honourable CM for MITM, has been 100%, from the first instance of MITM. The draft national tourism policy talks about an India Travel Mart, and Mumbai with its world-class airport, infrastructure support, stable law and order situation and entrepreneurial support, is the best destination to host the event. So I urge the Centre to consider Mumbai as the potential destination.” Paraag Jaiin Nainuttia, IAS, MD, MTDC, said, “MITM meets the needs of buyers with exhibitors of the highest standard. We have 75 international buyers, 150 pan India buyers, more than 200 sellers from Maharashtra, which includes hotels tour operators, MICE operators, spas, Ayurvedic spas, airlines, transport operators, etc. Maharashtra has the best infrastructure and is well connected. The ports of Maharashtra are also wellconnected. Blessed with a natural history, we have a 720-km-long coastline along the Konkan region and more than 450 forts.” Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Tourism & Culture and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Government of India, said, “Tourism is all about perception, when tourists are aware that India is a clean and friendly destination, people will start coming to India. Besides generating forex, tourism also generates employment and leads to women empowerment.” Superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who was the guest at the event, said “Mumbai is a global city and I don't see why Mumbai cannot be the entertainment capital of the world, when it is already the home of Bollywood and the entertainment capital of Asia.” The inauguration witnessed the presence of Ram Shinde, Minister of State for Tourism, Maharashtra; Vinod Tawade, Minister of School Education, Government of Maharashtra; Poonam Mahajan, MP, Mumbai; Satish Soni, Joint Managing Director, MTDC, and MLA Parag Alavani.

OSHIWARA: In the past, there have been plenty of cases, wherein hospitals reserved for women and children by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been allegedly misused or lie unused. One such BMC maternity clinic is in Samarth Nagar, Oshiwara. The maternity hospital, which is a four-storey structure with all facilities, does not have any doctors. In fact, according to the BMC, it is no longer a maternity hospital. According to the M.O.H of K/W ward, the maternity hospital has been a dead investment. Crores of money has been spent in building the hospital and maintaining it. “The hospital is a dead investment. No patients visit the hospital so the BMC has decided to hand it over to Cooper Medical College. They will take care of it,” said Dr. Meena Boudhankar M.O.H of K/W ward. “What is the point of appointing doctors and staff in the hospital and spend so much money on salaries if there are not even five patients?” she added. The maternity home is called as the dispensary and the maternity home has now been shifted to Cooper hospital, since there more patients can be accommodated. “The maternity home is a dispensary now where patients can gain awareness on their health. Patients go there for basic follow up, seek the help of doctors to maintain the health of the mother and child. There is a mother and child department at the maternity hospital in Samarth Nagar which will assist the patients,” said Prakash C Gidwani, an advisor to Cooper Hospital. Dean of Cooper Medical College, Dr Ramesh Chaturvedi said “Every medical college needs an urban centre and Cooper Medical College has been given this property as their urban centre and Cooper Hospital will look after it.” When asked why the board of the maternity home has still not been changed to the urban centre, the Dean said,
“Cooper College has not got complete ownership of the maternity home yet. The legal formalities are on and it will take around a month or so to complete. After that, we will surely change the board.” Ramesh Patil, a local resident and social worker said, “Considering that the locality has no other BMC maternity hospital, this place would have really helped the slum dwellers of Anand Nagar but if they have taken a decision to close the maternity clinic, it will not go down too well with the people of Anand Nagar. This clinic was like God's gift to them.” Local Corporator Jyotsna Dighe said, “The maternity hospital belongs to this ward. How can anyone just hand it over to Cooper Hospital? We will oppose this move before the final handover takes place because it is the only BMC hospital in the area that can cater to the poor. I have written numerous letters to the BMC Commissioner, coaxing him to start operations at the said hospital. If Cooper Hospital takes over and lets the maternity home run as per plan, we will not have an issue. But if the maternity ward is converted into something else, we will raise objection.” On being told that as per the MOH, only two to three patients came when the hospital was opened and was now a dead investment as per Dr. Meena Boudhankar, she said, “Had the BMC made the public better aware about its existence, more patients would have visited the hospital. This did not happen.”

LINK ROAD: The residents of Samadhan Society, also known as Fakirwadi, have been left petrified because their houses were demolished on October 5 after they were served a 24hour notice to vacate the same. The Collectors office gave the said notice to residents of the 13 houses. The residents, who have been given the money to pay 11 months' rent, are now stressed and bewildered as to what to do next. “How will we manage to find a place to stay in such a short frame of time? They have demolished our homes and thrown our luggage out,” said one of the residents whose house was being demolished. While the others were worried that their house would be demolished and they will be left with no roof over their head. Some of the residents have filed a case in the High Court against the order and are claiming that they were promised a transit camp. They do not want the money for the rent, instead they want a transit camp which was promised. “I do not know when they will demolish my house and have nowhere to go. They had said they will give us a transit camp but now they are not doing so. The builders are saying that they will give us a transit camp after six months when we vacate our houses but how are we supposed to trust them till they don't give us the assurance in black and white?” said Sujit Sonkar another resident, who with the others, has filled the case in High Court. Rajul Patel who is the Ex- Corporator of the locality who was also present at the time of the demolition said, “Nobody has bad intentions we do not want people to suffer unnecessarily. We are willing to help them in every way possible. And the houses which have filled a case in High Court I am sure are not being demolished until the Court has heard them out.”

LOKHANDWALA LAKE CHOKING WITH DEBRIS THE LAKE IS ALSO USED BY PEOPLE TO DUMP OFFERINGS FROM PUJA WHICH IS THREATENING ITS AQUATIC LIFE
SM KABEER/MM
Janhavi Samant
LOKHANDWALA: The illegal dumping of debris in Lokhandwala lake is choking the birds' paradise and its biodiversity. With the residents taking up the issue with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the civic body has decided to de-silt the lake and take measures to prevent future problems. The lake is famous among bird watchers as it is home to a diverse species of birds, including migratory birds in the winter. It is also a popular haunt for those who go there for morning and evening walks.
"Illegal dumping of rubbish and other debris has choked this freshwater lake. It is creating a major hazard for the local biodiversity," said Biren Shah, a fitness enthusiast who goes for jogging near the lake. The residents have been fighting it out with the authorities to prevent illegal dumping of debris for nearly two decades now. But till now all their efforts have come to naught. The lake is also used by people to dump offerings from puja which is threatening the aquatic life in the lake. Apart from ruining the natural beauty of the lake, these have damaged the flora and fauna. Waking up to
the issue, the civic body has finally decided to clean up the lake as it is even used for immersion of Ganpati idols. Nature lovers and residents allege that all these activities have caused the drying up of the lake. Earlier the lake was filled with water throughout the year. "However, this year the water had nearly dried up in April. Only after the rains, there is water again," said Shah. Residents are optimistic that once desilting is done and proper fencing is put up around the lake, all these illegal activities will stop. "Then this illegal dumping will stop which is the main cause of concern," said Nalini Sawant, a Lokhandwala resident. After the de-silting work, the breeding stock of fish will attract more fauna to the lake. Also, nesting sites of birds have been marked out so that they can be preserved during the de-silting project, said activists. More than 40 species of birds have been spotted at the lake. These include Grey Herons, Purple Herons, Egrets, Spot-billed and Whistling Ducks, Purple Swamp-hens, Waterhens and a juvenile Painted Stork. Apart from these, it is a good habitat for fish like Snakeheads and Catfish and Tilapia. In addition to the dumping of debris, the biodiversity around the lake is also being compromised as the trees are being cut for firewood giving the lake a bald look. The activists and residents have planted about 50 trees like Banyan, Peepal, Indian Figs and others along the lake's periphery so that the birds can feed on their seeds and also nest.

Ganesh mandals to pay fine for creating potholes pandal, the Ganesh mandals had to take permission from the BMC. Also, they had to take NOCs from the police, as well as the traffic police department. The judges had suggested in the last hearing that they would initiate contempt action against those concerned, including civic officials, for violating the rules.
ANDHERI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to take action against Ganesh mandals that have left potholes in roads by digging them up while erecting pandals for the Ganpati festival last month. In the recent past, several people have suffered accidents because of the potholes and some have even lost their lives. According to civic officials they are conducting a survey of all the pandals erected during the festival and if they found that the erected pandals have caused damage and created potholes then a fine would be imposed. “The corporation is conducting a survey. After the survey is over, we will take necessary action. This includes imposing a fine of Rs 2,000 per pothole created by the Ganesh mandal,” said the official. The decision comes following a rap from the Bombay High Court. The HC in its various orders in August and September had directed the BMC and concerned authorities to ensure that no nuisance was caused to the general public during festivals. For Ganeshotsav, the HC had directed the Ganesh mandals to ensure that the pandals do not occupy majority of the road causing inconvenience to pedestrians and traffic. The BMC will also take action against those mandals which erected pandals without acquiring the requisite permissions from the concerned authorities. According to the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti (BSGSS), which is an umbrella organisation of Ganesh mandals in the city, there are 11,556 Sarvajanik Ganpati mandals in the city. Of these, only 2,126 mandals had applied for the necessary permissions prior to the Ganpati festival. The remaining had either applied for permission and had not received the same or had not applied for the permissions. The officer said that they are reviewing the permissions acquired by the Ganesh mandals and whether any of them had flouted any conditions imposed on them while granting them permission. The HC has now asked the corporation to give a list of names of all those pandals which were erected without permission. For erecting a

MULUND: On October 2, Sou Laxmibai Eng. Med. School and Junior College (Science) arranged a special interactive session for the students of the school and college with the Education Minister of Maharashtra Vinod Tawde. The session started at 3pm with a welcome speech by Headmistress of the College Pooja Kulkarni. A floral momento was presented to the Minister as a token of honour. The programme continued with the interactive session of the students with the Education Minister. He welcomed the students and made them feel comfortable with their questions to be asked in any of the languages like English, Hindi, Marathi or Sanskrit. Students from the primary section asked him questions about his favourite subject. With more such questions coming his way, Education Minister Vinod Tawde recalled beautiful memories of his childhood and gave a satisfactory answer to the students. On being asked about the less number of students passing in the competence exam from Maharashtra, he said, “Our students only focus on curriculum based books. They don't have a habit or read any other general knowledge books apart from textbooks.” A student then asked him on why defence education for girls is not a part of the curriculum. He answered “There should be gender sensitisation in society i.e. no discrimination between girls and boys at home, school or the society.” A visually impaired students of Class IX asked, “Shouldn't visually challenged students get a chance to give their board exam on the computer? He replied that he would definitely pass this proposal to the Board of Education. The Education Minister enthusiastically and satisfactorily gave all the answers with references. He interacted with the children, as a parent does. He not only

Renu Muralidharan: They deserve to be hanged. I hope their act will take them to hell for shedding the blood of the innocent. I strongly reject such acts of terrorism. The Indian law is such where people can find loopholes and exploit it, so I think we as citizens should change the way we look at the law and abide by it. Shalbh Jain, 27: It is certainly a positive step, but whether all of them should have been given death penalty or not is difficult to judge. Indian law is such and probably the only one which is so complex. It will be wrong for a lay man like me to judge the decision.
Sanjeev Shrivastav, 61: The blasts were terrible, so I feel they all should be hanged. When these terrorists, who are not given death sentence were aware while planning that they will be killing a lot of innocent people, so all of them who helped to carry out the mission should be hanged. Rinku Vishwakarma, 21: There were a lot of people who died because of these people, so obviously they should be hanged and the remaining who are on the run should also be caught & hanged. The Indian law is very old and slow and it is a problem to an extent but eventually the law takes its own course and justice will be served. Vijay Varia, 21; The terrorist should be given a strict punishment and it is a happy moment for all Mumbaikars that justice has been done. I think it is time we change some of the rules. There is no point in keeping a terrorist in the prison for 15-20 years and wasting people's money on them. Satish Singh, 55: The Indian law is the best law in the world and we all should be proud of it. Yes, people grumble that the law is slow and there is no immediate punishment, but this law is very good. The authorities get enough time investigate and find out who is the culprit rather than just hanging the innocent. Dheeraj Dokania, 38: The guilty should be given punishment that they deserve. We are a democracy and we should not be partial towards anyone, not only in this case but also in the other cases. It is good that terrorists are hanged. When you are killing so many people, you obviously deserve capital punishment. Vishnu Danny, 20: Terrorism will never succeed. Good always prevails over evil. Mumbai will continue to flourish and be vibrant. So will India. Pakistan or no other nation can bog us down. Strict punishment to preceptors of terror is the only way to send the right message.
Shubham Gupta, 18: Not just 5, death penalty should be awarded to all who were involved. We should not give them time to appeal for mercy petition. If death sentence is pronounced today, they should be hanged the next morning. Only then in the near future, terrorists will be afraid to support terrorists.
PEOPLE’SPAGE 07
Today's General Managers need to be better communicators, better leaders. Leadership is couched in experience and learning, which doesn't have to be hospitality-specific, strong operational management ability, deep knowledge of the hotel business and effective leadership skills. The successful hotel manager will combine these qualities. Tejus did his schooling St. Thomas Academy, Mumbai where he was introduced to discipline early in life. Thereafter he completed his catering education at IHM Hyderabad and the institute apart from providing vocational education also taught him many life's lessons, which he still values and holds close to his heart. In conversation with Senior Journalist MEWATI SITARAM... Who inspired you to join the hospitality industry? Each of us is really good at something – it is just a matter of finding it. Do we know what we are destined to be, or do we find it through experience? There should be an inclination towards your liking and one should take appropriate decisions in life. As a child, we would frequently visit Udipi restaurants. I was always in awe of their food, consistency and speed of service. I was keenly aware that all this was achieved despite not having any formal education in restaurant or hotel management. This would immensely intrigue me for many years to come and laid the bedrock for me to pursue hotel management. Novotel is one of the prominent hotels at Juhu, patronized by leading Bollywood celebrities. Why do they prefer to revisit again and again? Novotel Mumbai is strategically located at Juhu. The who's who of Bollywood lives here and thereby coming here is only logical for proximity reasons. We have the best cuisines of all kind and best venues which attracts them and our variety of cuisines on offer, service and vantage sea view that is unparallel. The staff at the Hotel is also sensitized to their want for privacy. They ensure that they have adequate space provided for them to have some personal time. Therefore it does not come as a surprise when there is practically not a single day when few Bollywood celebrities do not visit the hotel! What are your plans for Novotel Juhu? Every guest who visits the hotel wants to see new additions. Upgradation and new additions are the need of the hour and we keep doing so whenever required. We expect to be able to provide top-ofthe-line experience to all our event guests and customers. We are also upgrading our rooms and are committing a large amount of money towards this exercise. We believe it will certainly enhance the overall guest experience and help reclaim the hotel's rightful status in the market. Any plans for adding more restaurants in Novotel? Novotel has six outlets, namely Olio – Italian restaurant, Sampan – the legendary Chinese restaurant, Square – all day dining restaurant, Gadda Da Vida – seaside bar, Bageecha – seaside Indian restaurant and Peche Mignon – the French patisserie. We believe through such robust offerings the hotel caters to large, divergent palates and have
enough variety to offer for anyone to explore and relish for a good period of time. Apart from the classic offerings of these outlets, we also conduct frequent and periodic food festivals and promotions at these outlets where we bring in new flavours and tastes which are different from the outlet's current offerings, thus bringing in a host of new gourmet experiences. What is important to the traveller today, locational advantage or the Accor brand? It will be incorrect to isolate one from the other since they are both very important elements. A brand like Accor provides a loyal guest the comfort and consistency that the guest is accustomed to and that's why we see a large number of Accor loyal guests stay at Novotel Mumbai Juhu Beach who keep coming back again and again. How much has the investment in digital marketing grown? Digital is very important and vital in the Hotel business. As more and more bookings get routed through digital platforms it is no longer an option. On the contrary the more pertinent question is how much to invest in this medium and what ROI to expect. How do you feel about faith bestowed on you by Accor group? Novotel Mumbai Juhu Beach is an important hotel and I look after it like it's my own baby. I believe in truly living the 'own the business' philosophy. I am very proud of leading this team here and believe that while we have scaled new frontiers, we have several milestones to achieve. The hotel is a big operation and Accor has certainly demonstrated faith in me and I have no doubt that I and my team will do everything to retain and enhance its iconic status in Mumbai!

Mahima Hora desires to make a mark Hailing from New Delhi, Mahima Hora possessing dreams in her eyes to pursue acting, little did she know her talent would give her the big ticket to the tinsel town? After marking her excellence in stage and theatre, she makes her big Bollywood debut with the film “COLD.” Essaying the role of a protagonist, Mahima Hora says “I am playing the lead in the film. The script of the film is outstanding and my character is very well written. I am excited and equally nervous because it marks my debut in the industry. I am just giving my hundred percent and keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully, I am going to stay in the film industry for a very long time.” Talking about her journey Mahima say “I belong to a simple family back ground where we don't have any association with Bollywood, but it was my passion for this art which made me pursue acting. I never had a God father who would guide me with the nuances of the industry. I did stage and theatre plays to understand the craft. So, films are something that I am going to continue to do.”

The Aarushi-Hemraj double murder in Noida about seven years ago shuddered the entire nation. The case got messed up subsequently. There followed investigation in the initial phase, implications, character elimination and lastly the conviction of the parents. No justice has emerged. In any case the Meghna Gulzar directed film “Talvar,” a fictionalized version of the same, forces you to. The film projects all the gruesome details (some factual, some canards) and much more on the table devoid of cringing, it has your awareness just in the same way the case had one spellbound In the film the Talvars arer christened asTandons. While Aarushi is Shruti and the CBI is CDI. However for these minor disputes and minor modification of names, Talvar stays on the course preferred. And that is to tell the story. No, not of Aarushi or her bond with her parents, but of an investigation gone awry, of the loopholes in the system. As it dovetails the three diverse investigations and their conclusions and the inconclusive evidence, it puts a question mark. However, it's not just the investigative process that it indicts, it's not only the police which is in the dock but everyone, including the bite famished media who deem the Chinese whispers, who lend credibility to it by echoing it without corroboration. Nevertheless the strength of the film doesn't only lie in how well and how pragmatically it incorporates fact with fiction. Sure as viewers one doesn't know what all in the film is true and what is mere conjecture or interpretation. At several points it veers towards the parents and seems to be batting for them. Indeed, if there is even an iota of doubt that they are not the culprits, it is the greatest travesty of justice. And no civilized society should condone it. The film that takes you through all the three investigations (step by step from the beginning till the end) is so well plotted and knit that there isn't a single 'blink your eye moment'. Riveting is an understatement to describe the narrative that moves from the familiar to the unfamiliar from the unsettling to introspective. No doubt
Sharman needs some 'me' time
Sharman Joshi has been having the busiest days possible. The actor has been in and out of the country with his play Raju Raja Ram Aur Main and when back in the city he has been busy with his film Hate Story 3 and the 3 stories of excel films which he has just wound up. He says he has not had time even for family who has been considerate so far but he doesn't know how long this would last. Sharman says “I've had hectic schedules. Its a dream for any actor and I am not complaining but I surely could do with some me time. I haven't had time for family for a while now but a month more and am planning to take things a little slow. Hate Story 3 is fast moving towards competition. Guess I'd take it slower then.”
the film is disturbing but not merely for it brings alive the tragic murders. Rather, for it makes us think, ponder and question. Nowhere does the film manipulate your emotions. The couple is fleshed out exactly as the parents have appeared in the media—now distraught, now killers, now innocent. And both Neeraj Kabi and Konkona Sen Sharma play it just right understated and effective. Irrfan Khan as the investigative officer Ashwin, somewhat sympathetic to parents, shines as only he can. A back story (a troubled marriage with Tabu playing out in the background) humanises him. But for this creative license and brief interjection that even refers to Gulzar's film Izazat and the evergreen song Mera kuch saaman, there are no distractions. In fact, the film steers clear of unwanted family flashbacks, overt sentimentality and yes, though each frame underlines the tragedy there is no rona dhona. Yet you have goose bumps all through. If you have the heart and the gumption to look at truth from an altogether different angle, there is no way you can miss this gem of a film. Meghna Gulzar, daughter of noted poet and lyricist and most popular and talented actor Raakhee ,needs to be enormously commended for her directorial acumen. Not to forget Vishal Bhardwaj's authentic writing for creating this investigative thriller that perturbs more than it thrills. It's that rare whodunit that holds you in a vicelike grip even though it doesn't tell you who did it.

“I put twice the efforts in my performance since I am playing the role of Shabana Azmi's daughter”
– Priya Banerjee Slim, svelte and blessed with sharp features, Priya Banerjee is all set to make her debut in Bollywood with the Aishwarya Rai Bachchan comeback film 'Jazbaa.' She has a number of Telegu films to her credit as well. Though she was born in Kolkata, she has been raised in Canada and always knew for sure she would be in movies some day. In an exclusive interview with SHAILI MADAN, she speaks about her debut film, her life and her future plans... About your Bollywood debut film 'Jazbaa' which releases tomorrow... I am extremely excited it's release. This is a Sanjay Gupta film and is a suspense thriller. Most importantly, it is also Aishwarya Rai's comeback film. The story is about two mothers – Shabana Azmi and Aishwarya Rai. I play the role of Shabana Azmi's daughter. I am not allowed to reveal more than this, but I play one of the most pivotal characters in the film. It has been a great experience to work with such amazing people. How was your experience working with Shabana Azmi? She is an extremely good person and a great actor. I was a little nervous during my first scene with her. When you are working with someone like Shabana Azmi, there is so much pressure that you have to prove yourself or else you will get overshadowed. You get to learn so much but at the same time, you want people to notice you. Infact, she was such a good coactor. She kept helping me, improvising me and eventually we shared a beautiful chemistry both, off and on screen. Even Mr Sanjay Gupta appreciated the results. Her being around helped me because I put twice the effort and did a really good job. You can learn so much from what she shares and teaches about acting. How did the movie come about? I was doing films down South and always wanted to enter Bollywood. However, I was not actively looking for it when the movie came about. I think Sanjay Gupta had seen my South film song link on Twitter, at the time when they were casting for the film. He expressed his interest to cast me in the movie. The casting director asked me and called me to ask if I was interested. He briefed me about the movie and the star cast...and I just took it up without thinking any further. I am lucky as a newcomer to be part of this film. There are so many movies that get made and I am part of this. A film like this will never go unnoticed. It is an extremely amazing, power packed film. How was your experience working with Aishwarya and Irrfan Khan? I shared a few scenes with them. There was this

Shraddha Pandit has always been extremely dedicated to her singing career coming from a legendary music background. Recently the girl lent her voice to one of the music tracks of Jazbaa which has been touted as a hot favourite amongst charts. We hear Shraddha is ecstatic because it's one of her favourite actors film she lent her voice to, being Aishwarya
Rai and most importantly it's a foot tapping number which she even heard one of the cars play when she was stuck in a jam. It's sure giving her a musical high.
action scene where I met both of them. They are amazing people. During the action scene she came up to me and made sure I was doing fine. That's so amazing coming from Aishwarya Rai. She didn't need to go out of her way, but she did. She is an extremely humble and down to earth person. You've graduated in the field of Marketing. How did acting happen? I think my life is so random that I don't plan anything. I have always liked Performing Arts and have always been into singing and dancing. Having been born in a Bengali family, these things were mandatory for me. So this streak was always there in me and I enjoyed it as well. When the time came to make a decision, I really thought I wanted to pursue acting. So overnight I made a decision to come to India. I had the option of going to LA, but I somehow, chose India. This was an extremely impulsive decision. I did not even know anyone in the industry. How would you define your journey? My journey so far has been really good. Its been two-and-a-half years since I've been here. Its been a process for me and things are constantly evolving. I am just enjoying the process. I never came with a plan. I am letting everything happen to me and am enjoying the process. How has your experience been doing South films and then Bollywood? I personally really enjoyed doing South films. Before I moved to India, I never watched South films. But when I got an offer from a Telegu film, I was a little nervous because I didn't know the language or culture. I am glad I did it because I learnt a lot. Even if you go to an acting school, there is very limited that one can learn. But when you start working in a film, you learn the technicalities, the camera and so much more. People down South are very humble and sweet. So for me, when I was working here with Mr Sanjay Gupta, I felt like I had been there, done that. Having worked so much, I wasn't nervous and knew the camera angles right. Ofcourse, as an actor, you are constantly learning with every film but its good to be aware of things. I am glad South films happened to me. How would you define yourself? I am very impulsive by nature. I just do what makes me happy. I like being happy and doing things that I am mentally convinced about. I am not the kind of person who sits and looks back at the choices that I made. I am always very sure about what I am doing. What do you miss about Canada? I miss a lot about Canada. I miss my family the most and friends as well. I miss the place since I have been raised there, so its home for me. I also miss my mom's home cooked food. So every time I visit them, I am usually eating at home. Have you made friends in Bollywood? Luckily, I have made good friends who are actors, who have been in the industry or come from the background. Everyone is really nice. Its how you look at things. If you are a certain way with people, they will treat you the same way. So luckily I've met good people and made good friends and am really liking it here.

TRAVEL TALES
Time Share holiday abroad has pros and cons “We are going to stay at Torgon in Switzertland for seven days, in the RCI apartment,” announced my friends who are members of Time share holiday. Due to lack of experience then, I considered every remote place to be exotic. Joining them for a scenic train ride from Geneva to Montreux followed by a bus ride from Aigle, I thought of arriving at a vibrant place. On entering, Les CretesEuroloisirs resort, we found the reception closed and building
SM KABEER/MM
vacant due to a National holiday. 'Super- exotic', I mumbled, crinkling my nose but not getting disappointed. While lugging the grocery bags and panting on the steep slope, I tried not to let go of my nurtured dream. I did right as next day while walking around the woods, waterfalls and Les Portes Du Soleil, a ski-region having 250 ski-lifts, I did feel the 'exotic' factor despite the absence of snow in summer. With cows for company, I felt blissful with the sound of Swiss -bells that swayed the silence
'Kabhi kisiko mukkamal jahan nahi milta, Kahin zameen nahi to kahin aasman nahi milta'... Such is the story of Debu Chakravarthy, a professional singer in Andheri, who has been singing professionally for the last 35 years. He has had his share of bad luck in Bollywood but nothing has withered his passion for singing. He got his first break in 1981 where he recorded his debut song for Bollywood, but his luck had something else in store, as the movie he sang for did not release. Thereafter, a series of bad luck situations kept coming his way. Yet he did not give up and continued to follow his passion and went on to become an international stage singer. In a candid chat with Reynold D'Sa, Debu Chakravarthy talks more about himself... When and how did you start your musical journey? I was studying in a college in Hyderabad when I started singing. It has been my passion. During those days, there were no cassettes or CDs to hear songs from or practice songs, so radio was the only medium to listen to songs. So I would wait everyday in the evening to hear songs on the radio. Obviously, the family was not happy with it. They were concerned and they wanted me to study instead. You are so rich with experience...What is your aim? I am not going to live forever, so before leaving this Earth I would like to teach, train and share my knowledge with the younger generation. So what I want to do now is whatever I have learnt from so many people and my Gurus over the years. I want to share it with others. I mostly sing on karaoke tracks - the youth relate to it. This is not easy unless you're a trained singer. Everybody is aware about sur and taal but I would train people to put life into songs and add soul to it. What do you think about the music these days? The youth like the new music but I prefer the old classical music. The music these days is more of noise and less of melody but still there are plenty of new musicians who make really good music. However, the trend will change and people will eventually come back to the old classical music. The music these days is good for
gently. Happy with the first day's stint, I looked forward to having more exotic experiences. The 'more' turned out to be disappointing. We discovered that the bus ride that would bring us to civilisation was not available at frequent intervals. So after visiting the Castle of Chateau de Chillon that appears to be rising from water, we had to rush back to Darshana Doshi catch the last bus at 7, without falling on land. Oh, what a loss it was not being able to relish Cheese Fondue and Raclette by the lake side, in vibrant Montreaux, famous for its vineyards!! However MTR rice and rasamin the apartment kitchen did provide some solace as it was piping hot. So what does one do for seven days in a remote area besides cooking, cleaning, commuting and 'cow'ing? I wondered on the third day. I could go sledging in the nearby snow-mountain, visit chocolate -making factory and vineyards. But this would not have allowed me to get the feel of the country, culture and important landmarks. Mt Titlis and Jungfrau were too far to visit in the day and come back. But not wanting to miss out on these 'must do' places, I took off to Interlaken and Lucerne for four days, staying in hotels. The apartment that was availed at a cheap price was of no use then. But sometimes remote places do offer rewarding experiences. During our stay at Gemuender Ferien park resort in Germany, we visited Ordensburg Vogelsang, a castle located close by, built in 1930 to train Nazi elite. The arrangement of barracks, community halls and sports arena flanked by a steep slope leading to a reservoir was spectacular. It turned out to be the second largest relic of Nazi infrastructure, spread over a sprawling 50,000 sq.mt. It was a unique experience to relive Hitler's ideology. I had one more experience of Time share apartment at Florida in US. I survived the circuit of GCCC [Grocery shopping, Cooking, Cleaning and Commuting] for two days and then moved on. As I travelled more, I learnt that the best place to stay is downtown which is well connected and is the hub of all activities. I also learnt that I am more of a city-hopping- traveller wanting to pack in the world, each day and so time -share holiday is not for me.
“I want to share my knowledge and experience with the youth by training them” DEBU CHAKRAVARTHY dancing. There are few new songs, which can be sung live at an event. When you listen to an old song, it touches your heart and soul but the new songs are not like that. Who all from this generation according to you can sing these soulful and meaningful songs? There are quite a few but I think Arijit Singh and Sukhwinder sing really well. They know how to build the song and do justice to it. And the youth also enjoy their songs. In times of stress, how essential do you think it is to learn or listen to music? Music is very important. All great people have been music fans. They loved music and they knew to play some or the other instrument. It is scientifically a proven fact that music helps you destress. Is age a barrier for being trained in music? The sooner you start it is better it is. Later in life you get busy with other things If you learn music early, it is very helpful. It makes you an optimistic as person. Do you think it has become more difficult for singers to get into the industry? Infact, it has become easier compared to the olden days. Those days there were great singers and only those few singers kept singing. There was very little scope for others. These days you have a new artist coming in every other day. How has singing transformed your life? Singing is everything to me. It has changed my family and my financial life. My entire day revolves around singing. I do a lot of Yoga and breathing exercises, which for a singer are very important. A singer should be able to hold his breath for a long time and change his voice and sing whenever necessary. Any message for aspiring singers? There are so many platforms available these days like the television shows. It was not there during our time. So if you are taking up singing as a profession, stay committed to it and take it seriously. You need to seek help from people to get better and there are people who are willing to help. All the knowledge and experience I have I want to share with the younger generation before I leave this world. And when I have done that, I can die peacefully.

Achievements in your career... I am lucky to have worked with Chef Albert Roux, while at Sofitel St. James London, a French-born restaurateur and chef working in Britain. He and his brother Michel operated Le Gavroche, the first restaurant in the UK to gain three Michelin stars. Being in foreign soil, I was awarded Employee of the month and Best employee of the year while at Sofitel and Blakes Golf Club, Mewati Sitaram respectively. Any International exposures? Yes, I worked in the United Kingdom from 2002 until 2008, and during that course I worked with Sofitel St. james, at Piccadilly Circus, Chamberlains Restaurant, Leadenhall Market at Bank and Blakes Golf Club, North weald, Essex. Why did you choose Deccan Odyssey despite various other options? I have one thing in my mind. It shouldn't be easy to be amazing. Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is that you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed. Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly in their career. So I decided to accept to do something new. I was working as an Area Chef for Cafe Mangii. One fine day I got a call from an agency asking me if I would consider doing what I do best in a different way? Post meeting the concerned people, I was convinced that it was very different than what I have been doing and it would be a challenge in its own way. I had never worked being on the move ever before and it was a turning point to go ahead and grab this opportunity. The best part is getting to travel around the entire length and breadth of India and meeting people from various countries, states within India. And to be able to see and learn so much about them and their cultures which is just helping me enhance my skill and knowledge about various cuisines available in and around India. I have just been with this company for about a year and a half and I am sure I love it. What is the difference between cooking on moving train and surface kitchen? Quite a bit of difference to be honest, as we can carry only a certain amount of stock on board and not over stock (considering that we are constantly on the move) to ensure quality and
WINE&DINE 11
maintain hygiene standards. Availability of products of desired quality at various locations that we go through can be a tough task at times. Since we are constantly moving rates of all ingredients vary from place to place. We are lot more in to quality and not quantity; we make sure best of the products to be procure from local market irrespective of cost. What type of menu and beverages do you offer on board D O? We serve set menus offering a choice mainly between Continental and Indian preparations. Also considering the nationality of guests and what state of India we are travelling through, we cook country specific cuisine and regional Indian cuisine during the weeklong itinerary. We have a full-fledged Bar offering an array of wine, beer, whiskey, Single malt, Vodka, Gin and not to forget a variety of Tea, Coffee, cocktails and mocktails served on board. How do you procure local and International ingredients on board? Are Meat, fruits and other perishable items stored in the train or do you go for spot purchasing? We have our registered vendors for all sorts of imported and local products. We along with our quality audit team visit the facilities of our vendors before finalising anyone. As our guests are quiet high profile (Indians and expats) we can't take a chance by using any product that would be substandard and could put our guests/ our repertoire in the harm's way. We have ample fridges and freezers for storage purpose. We procure enough for about two days and then order/procure as we travel, from our registered vendors. What are the most enjoyable aspects of your work and challenges? I think having a challenging situation thrown at you and you overcome it, achieving desired goals and response from patrons is what adds in a lot of fun to any work place. To name a few such as cooking various cuisines, getting to travel through various parts of such a beautiful and diverse country makes the experience breath taking. We have challenges of procurement of various products which won't be easily available at certain locations and maintenance of equipment while on the go. A message for aspiring chefs and your ultimate goal... Be ready to work hard, work smart and don't let other peoples judgment's make you change your course as it's your destiny not theirs. Don't worry about making mistakes but learn from them and move on. My ultimate goal is to be ranked amongst the most successful Chefs in India and Abroad.

READER'S MESSAGES
In the quest of complete satisfaction Is man ever satisfied? Oops! I mean is a human being ever satisfied? I would say that upto 95 per cent of the populace would state that complete satisfaction is never achievable. True I say! This is one of the truths of humanity – we are never satisfied! Take for instance, we want money; and then we want more money and then want more and more and more...the craving, the desire, the want, never seems to cease. This is a tangible desire. But then even intangible wants never seem to be fulfilled to our complete satisfaction. We want happiness and then want more and more and more. The same is with love. Do we ever feel loved completely? If we did, then would there we scope and space for obsession, possessiveness, jealousy, anger, lust and all other related emotions? I present here a story I had once heard about a man who lived his life, seeking satisfaction throughout. Rahul, when three years old, would always cry to play with his brothers toys, none of which seemed to entertain him. And when given his brother toys, he would again cry for his own. When he grew a little older, he always wanted to wear his
brothers clothes and shoes and when his demands were fulfilled, he preferred his own. When in school, he waited to go to college. When in college, he was eagerly awaiting his career. After that handsome pay, he wanted marriage. Marriage brought the desire for children. He was the deciding factor for their education, their career, their marriage, their children... Finally when he reached the fag end of his life, he sat in his rocking chair, finding happiness in the imagined memory of his infancy. And going through his life's memories, he realised that each time he missed the 'bus of happiness' only waiting for the next to come. After all, Rahul's life went by in anticipating happiness in every next want. I am sure this seems like a story of a Moral Science book. But the essence of it can be learnt at any stage of life. The fact is that we have a tendency of searching for more and more of what we already have. In the bargain, we have lost what we already did gain. Some would feel that the society is responsible because you are having someone to compare with. In most cases that doesn't mean that the society is at fault here. We are the ones who feel dissatisfied
DIVERSE AND VARIED: WAYS OF FOLKS
Bindu Midha
As we traverse the path of life, we come across many persons, diverse in manner, attitude and behaviour. Each is a representative of a different outlook to life. With some, we feel comfortable with several others, we have to make
do. The work place, residence, streets and travel help you experience this diversity and make you wonder about which category you would fall into. Whose company you would truly value and feel safe in? For there is the friendly and kindhearted kind, the cleverly manipulative kind, the highly generous kind and the kind who only likes to take thoughtlessly, remorselessly without thinking about returning the favour. And not to omit the kind who appears friendly but always has a trick up his sleeve! Isn't this the one whom we should be wary of? So then, whose company do we seek so each gains from the other, feel happy in their presence. At the offset, a few seem to make you feel at ease but with passage of time you realise, truly they are quite unlike you. Their priorities are different, their mindset a complete contrast and your ability to communicate with them becomes a challenge. Now consider if they happen to be those whom you need to work with, well God save you as there is no way out, other than perhaps keep it strictly business, honey! Or would it be better to make their lives as miserable as they are making yours? Well, then you would need to don the Machiavellian cap and it may just jar with your personality. But, honestly, would that lead you out of the situation? Stoop: why so low? Does it not
translate to the fact that you are adopting the very ways of the person whom you would rather not have anything to do with? What if you need to work in close co-ordination with the individual since you are co-workers? Change your job? But is that an option at all if you love the job and the place you are in? So the way out of this rigmarole, a Catch 22 situation- Take on an indifferent and impersonal attitude. Enjoy. That could help you stay where you are, peacefully, doing your bit, staying the way you would like to be mentally, ethically. Coz if life did not offer the undulating, which sprinkles the zing, it would be horribly routine, mundane and regular. Enjoying the irregular, smiling and laughing on the aside, about the devious ways of such humans whom you are compelled to work in close co-ordination with is the way to make your journey a happy and enjoyable one. Collaborate, co-operate, leaving no room for manipulation. Widen your circle, at the work place, at home, in the outside world. Look around to identify like-minded persons and take advantage of their presence, allow them to become a part of your life. This is bound to help you relax. Become unmindful of the presence of this person who seems to have adopted a malignant presence in your work life. Cause of much mental misery and trauma; far from it, each of you have the space and domains of operation, you a constructive zone, retaining your innate qualities of being straight forward, and the others of choosing the path they like to savour. Doesn't good-heartedness work as a lodestar that does not need any external crutch to keep it going? Keeping your mind off the unproductive, would definitely help you dive headlong into useful ventures. Does that make you the rare kind? Who cares, rare is more sought after, isn't it? So, live right as you live only once.
with what we have and people around you just act as a proof or a mirror to show that you have less. This doesn't mean that feeling dissatisfied with what we have is wrong. This is the feeling which raises competition and the need to achieve more which pave way for our development. We just can't sit feeling satisfied and keep on living a monotonous life. Feeling dissatisfied with what you have done is not wrong but feeling dissatisfied with what you have got is not right. Go to the beach and gather a handful of sand. And then open the fist to gather more. What happens then, all that you already have just slides out and you are left with an open palm. Have you ever sat back to think how much have you already achieved? Happiness is in what you have been given, and not in what you have not been given. Complete satisfaction is here and now. Remember a lot more could have not been provided or simply taken away. The search and urge for more and more should be a goal and not your life itself!
Dear Editor, Good that the drink and drive checks have become stringent considering that the festive season is round the corner. Off late, there have been plenty of incidents of drink and drive which have resulted in tragic accidents and people have lost their lives. There are a lot of educated people who are doing things like these. We even had a lawyer drinking and driving which really explains the kind of ignorant people we have in our country. According to me, the punishment should be increased and much more stringent laws should be brought in. The accused should not be allowed to drive again under any circumstances whatsoever. When someone is drinking and driving he is not only risking his own life but putting others life at risk as well. Good that Mumbai Messenger is covering this story and I think more and more media should publish this story and make people aware about the issue. Kartik Venkat see more at www.mumbaimessenger.com
Food Preferences Are Way Beyond Good And Bad Nature is the best teacher. There are a few things beyond being good or bad. There are few things just created by the creator. We people need to get out of judging everything from good and bad and need to understand that nothing is good or bad. Everything is just as it is. That's the way its been created. Nowadays we have been seeing people having discussions and arguments about eating vegetarian food and non- vegetarian food. I am not saying it is good to kill innocent animals. Still there are a few things which are beyond good or bad. The Earth always has to keep a balance and to keep its balance, it has created a few things which we just have to understand to move beyond our limitation and judgments. We all know in the evolution of the Earth, we have four kingdoms Mineral, plants, Animals and then Humans. Our Animal kingdom has already taught us that the Universe was already created by 3 kinds of species herbivores (those who only eat vegetables), carnivores (those who eat only other animals) and omnivores (those who eat both vegetables and other animals). Now can you say that animals eating vegetables are good, while those eating non-veg are bad? That's how they have been created by the creator. They were and are just meant to be the way they are. Now what's the metaphysical reason behind this difference and having different cravings? If we closely try to understand the nature of those animals that are eating vegetables, are the animals those who are very sensitive and emotional towards life and they are compassionate in nature. They easily love everything and everyone. The animals that are eating nonvegetarian are those who are more aggressive in nature and think about power and control. They are more strong emotionally and more practical in life. They have superior qualities and love to be leaders. The animals that eat both are the one, which have
both kinds of patterns, they are emotional and practical and they keep switching from one to another. The same applies to humans. We have all these 3 kinds of humans too. The people who have thoughts of sensitivity and compassion automatically get into the direction of eating Anjali Nagpal vegetarian food, and when humans have thoughts of power and control then they tend to have the craving or enjoy non-vegetarian food. You cannot define anyone as good or bad because everyone is on a different path in life; and whatever path they choose is the right one for them. They were born that way for a reason. So no human becomes good or bad, no matter what its food craving he or she has. For eg: many people in the business world tend to be more practical than emotional and they are the rulers and got be aggressive for their work and so they tend to have thoughts which are more towards power and control and they automatically would have a craving to eat non-vegetarian food. Also, there are plenty of people who take the spiritual path and tend to have thoughts of sensitivity, love and compassion and so they eat vegetarian food and then there are those who keep switching from veg to non-veg and vice versa. Still all of them are good humans and perfect as they are. They are the way they are because they are here to do different things and so they are on a different path and have different thought patterns and so they have different cravings. These are different expressions of life and we have to learn to embrace all of life. Animals have learned to accept and now its time for humans to move above judgments and limitations and love one another.

Dear Shagun, Noni, known scientifically as Morinda citrifolia, is a tropical fruit found primarily in the South Pacific, India, the Caribbean, South America and the West Indies. Over 2,000 years ago, the inhabitants used all parts of the Noni tree as food, medicine, and dye. It is said to treat many ailments like constipation, skin inflammation, infection, mouth sores, fever and sprains. Known as the “Aspirin of the Ancient,” Noni juice can be used as a supplement. Noni is often mixed with other fruit juices because of its unpleasant taste. It is suggested that drinking noni juice on an empty stomach might be the best way to gain maximum benefits. Laugh your pain and worries away Sanjeev Pendharkar
Who doesn't want to laugh? Everyone likes to lead a happy and stress free life. However, in today's competitive atmosphere most of us live under so much stress that we need to take time of our busy schedule to laugh! Thank God, laughing clubs with innovative laughing therapies are thriving around us like never before. Most of us have heard the proverb 'Laughter is the best medicine!' Even science has proved
Shoulder the load for greater strength The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body, but it's also one of the most injured. Blame its hypermobility (no other joint can move 360 degrees) and underlying instability. But your workout routine may also be causing trouble. “Shoulder injuries are often the result of imbalances between the chest and back muscles, particularly t h e p e c t o r a l i s m a j o r, t h e infraspinatus, and deltoid muscles," says an osteopath. These imbalances are often linked with tightness and inflexibility. Poor lifting technique can also cause problems. The most common shoulder injuries include tendinitis, bursitis, and tears. If you have a loss of full range of motion above 90 degrees and pain when moving your arm around, you're most likely suffering from one of these injuries. Here's how to deal with the issue and prevent it from happening in the first place. Step 1: Rice. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation work best in early stages. Cold therapy is especially helpful to reduce pain and inflammation. Step 2: Alternate heat and ice. Contrast therapy may be more beneficial if the injury is more than a few days old, since it increases blood flow to the injured area. Step 3: For chronic shoulder pain, avoid any overhead exercises that involve continuously moving the arm below to above shoulder level. IF PAIN IS: Coming in gradually over time but goes away with warmup; felt on outside or front of shoulder, spreading down to elbow; felt at night, especially when
lying on affected shoulder; getting worse when raising arms or lifting overhead; felt during heavy pushing or pulling movements. You may have: Rotator cuff and biceps tendinitis or subacromial bursitis. Tendinitis is an inflammation of tendons, often due to repetitive movements. It can occur with bursitis, an inflammation of the bursa (a fluid-filled sac at top of shoulders). IF PAIN IS: Sharp or dull ache deep in the shoulder; accompanied by weakness when lifting hand above shoulder height, when reaching behind back, or rotating arm; felt at night, especially when lying on affected shoulder, felt at rest as condition progresses. You may have: Rotator cuff tear. A tear can occur under heavy loads (such as lifting too heavy of a weight overhead), but it's more commonly caused by repeated microtrauma that wears the rotator cuff tendons over time. IF PAIN IS: Tender to touch at front of shoulder or made worse with lifting, pulling, or repetitive overhead reaching; accompanied by a "catching" or "clicking" in the shoulder with movement; causing difficulty reaching behind back and overhead. You may have: biceps tendinitis. Although it's in the biceps muscle, continuous or repetitive overuse of the biceps tendon can be felt through overhead movements, rotator cuff tears, and chronic shoulder instability due to weakness in the rotator cuff and upper-back muscles.

On 6th October 2015 between 5.30 and 6.30 pm a very unique shradhanjali sabha was held at Pushpanjali hall in Lokhandwala Garden No.2, Lokhandwala Complex in honour of Shri Ram Gehani who passed away on 3rd October 2015 after a brief illness. Mr. Ram Gehani was a unique personality who was a prominent social worker of Lokhandwala complex being one of its first few residents who had shifted to the complex in the year 1983 when there was practically nothing in the area. Before coming to Lokhandwala, he had participated in various social activities at Sion and Juhu where he had shifted in the year 1970. He was actively associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and other various educational institutions like Vivekanand Education Society at Chembur and also Upnagar Shikshan Mandal at Juhu. He was an Advocate practicing in the Labour and Industrial Courts at Mumbai. His son Rajesh Gehani who practices as an Advocate in the High Court at Mumbai informed a huge gathering of about 400 who had attended the sabha from various fields and organizations that his father had drafted his own condolence message and had SMSed the same to him about 4 months before he departed. In this message he had expressed his desire that after his passing away no rituals should be followed and no mourning or grieving should be there. If at all the family wanted to have a gathering a “Haasya Kavi Sammelan” should be organized. In deference to his wishes the Shradhanjali sabha was organized and Mr.Ram Gehani's younger brother Mohan informed the gathering about various incidents in example of the humour of Mr.Ram Gehani. Thereafter Mr.Ramesh Mehta and Shri Ajay Maheshwari spoke about how Mr.Gehani used to turn any serious situation in to a light hearted moment. Lastly, as per Mr.Gehani's desire a Haasya kavi Mr.Rajiv Nigam recited some humourous poetries and the gathering came to an end. The above instance is again a totally different but a very practical way to accept death of a close member of a family in a lighter and a less serious way. This shows that even at the time of parting Mr.Ram Gehani had a lesson for all of us in how to live life to its full. May his soul attain Moksha.

2015 -2016. He has been President of the Association since the last 10 years. Chandraparakash M. Parekh was elected as Vice President, Hemant Muchhala as Hon. Secretary and Santosh H. Somani as Hon. Treasurer during the AGM. BYMA has strengthened its arbitration mechanism for its members. The Bombay High Court had given directions to yarn merchants that they should approach BYMA for arbitration and settlement of a ny d i s p u t e s , i n fo r m e d Jaykrishna Pathak. More than 100 dispute settlements have Jaykrishna Pathak, President been made by the association successfully till now. He further stated that yarn business in this financial year has not begun on a very healthy note due to falling prices and lack of demand. Devaluation of Chinese currency added fuel to the fire and made yarn export from India more difficult. Due to the drastic fall in crude oil prices, the prices of raw materials took a beating of 30 to 35%. This also affected the prices of all the textile based raw materials and its by products. Due to the insufficient rains, the prices of raw cotton increased at a time when spinning mills and weaving units were already loosing heavily, as most of the products being sold under- cost, leading to a partial shut down in some of their production capacities. Pathak warned about unrest in Bhiwandi with some of the weavers' faction calling not only for Bhiwandi Bandh but also making defamatory speeches against yarn suppliers. In fact, a large chunk of capital of yarn suppliers has been stuck with Bhiwandi weavers, which may turn into bad debt in some cases, which they would not afford.
