2 From the White House.... As continued from last month......... The venue for our inauguration was Egweni, it was the only one I could find that served breakfast and conference facilities. We arrived on time and the full Natcom were already there to greet us, it was very cordial as we all introduced ourselves, most of us had not had the opportunity to meet Natcom before so this was a good way of getting to know them. 14 Joburg East members, the full compliment of 4 Natcom members and 2 wives made for a cramped dining area. We decided to have breakfast first as this would give Hannes our National President time to finalise his notes and and other small issues. After breakfast we moved into a conference room for the ceremony, it felt surreal, we were finally being recognised. Hannes made his speech on Ulysses and how we as members should not let the petty issues spoil what Ulysses is all about. Enjoy the riding first and foremost and just go with the flow. We are the 27 th Chapter of Ulysses SA and his impression from the short time spent with us was that we will from small begin nings grow and become stronger. We were handed firstly our chapter certificate, then one by one each founding member was called up to receive their new regalia. A short speech was given on behalf of Joburg East praising the members for sticking it out when it looked like we were going nowhere and thanking Julian who recommended us to Jan & Susan, formerly of the East London Chapter and Frans & Ellen of the Bosveld Chapter to us. We assured Natcom that we were going to become a chapter who would strive to keep the Ulysses flag flying high, doing what we could to attract new members and support Natcom wherever we could. A final group photo of all the proud founding members was taken and the ceremony was concluded, a celebratory drink was in order so it was off to the pub.

4 Ride Reports 6 TH MARCH – OLIVE GROVE – GROOTVLEI As commented by an early arrivee ‘what a glorious day for riding’ and who could argue. All those who confirmed their attendance duly arrived, although it was touch and go for Jan & Susan, it seems Susan had a dodgy Chicken Prego the day before which left her feeling dodgy but she toughed it out as biker chics do. Frans & Ellen who are members of Bosveld joined us for their first ride with the group, we were on our best behaviour so not to put them off. After struggling with the camera to take the group photo we were off, winding our way through the leafy suburbs of Benoni on route to Heidleberg. Our journey after passing through Heidelberg was spoilt by an excessive amount of trucks on the road going in both directions, you could be forgiven in thinking that this was a normal working day. Despite the many obstacles we managed to get to the venue on time. We were expecting the usual good buffet breakfast we normally get, only to be sorely diappointed this time. The service was slow and the breakfast not good, it was hard to part with R90 forwhat we received, not at all good value for money. Unless they go back to the way it was they will not see us again anytime soon. We all decided to ride the return leg as a group with Nick leading us on his magical mystery tour. Que Sera was decided as the pit stop for a cool one, we sat and cha tted, getting to know our newer members better. Looking around at the members a comment was made that we are a mixed breed i .e. East Rand, East London & Bosveld, to which Trevor quickly responded that he is pure bred. Nice one Trevor. We all left with our spirits renewed all ready for the workingweek ahead except for the ROF’s. RIDE REPORT 13TH MARCH – EGWENI PARYS JOBURG EAST CHAPTER INAUGRATION Arriving at the wimpy Big Rob was was already there, he welcomed us in his ususal jovial manner, but this morning his smile was extra wide as he gestured to his gleaming new steed. His latest pride and joy a new BMW RT1200! He was chuffed to bits and rightly so. As we stood admiring and discussing his E-Bony (ask him for the explanation) the other members started trickling in. Our departure was to be 8:00 sharp to give us enough time to get to Parys, all were present except those we were picking up at Carnival en route. The efficient cash sucking parasites now have a speed camera as you pass through the Heidelberg agricultural area, not knowing exactly where the camera was or if there was another one pointing in the other direction it was sticking to the speed limit so as not to part with another R800. The ride was at a steady 140 Kmh ensuring we would get to the destination on time. Turning onto the R59 with half an hour in hand and ±40Km’s to go, watching the clock was not an issue as we had enough time to get to Parys. Riding slowly as we approached our destination Trevor & I decided to ride past and stop on the bridge to admire the scenery before making a U-turn to join the group who had pulled into the parking lot. The buffet breakfast was on par with other venues we frequent in price and quality, I don’t think anyone left hungry or dissatisfied. With breakfast done we made our way to the boardroom where we were duly inaugurated. A celebratory drink was in order so we headed off to Legends Pub & Grill in Parys and of course great socialising, I think the chapter is off to a good start with a great bunch of peo ple getting along really well. Thereafter all jolly and with a sense of belonging we headed home. RIDE REPORT 20 TH MARCH ANNA’S KITCHEN - 3 RIVERS Another good turnout it seems as though we are enjoying the venues. This week we were joined by Marc & his better half Deanna, who decided to ride their Harleys. There was some concern that these American bony shakers were not going to keep up but our fears were soon laid to rest as they mixed in with us all. Most of us had sewn on our new colours, and I must say our choice was a good one, white on black looks good. Pathfinder Nick led the way once again picking up members at Carnival Mall, on route to Heidelberg. The ride was unhurried with plenty of time to get to the venue. Anna’s Kitchen is one of the favourite venues as you can always be assured of efficient, friendly service and good food at a reasonable price. What makes a great Sunday breakfast run is a combination of the ride itself with reference to weather, road conditions, the scenery and the amount of traffic encountered on route, the quality, quantity and pricing of the breakfast and lastly the social aspect. This week it was perfect. Ellen regaled us with stories of her interesting job as an HR manager for a group of companies and had us in fits of laughter. The group decided to take a slightly longer return ride going around Suikerbos Rand. RIDE REPORT 27 TH MARCH DIE BOSPOT- LOSKOP DAM As this was the Easter weekend we were a little down on numbers, John was riding in ET with the BMW club, Shane & Gail were wandering around Natal somewhere, Graham, Frans, Ellen & big Rob were otherwise engaged. So off we went following Nick in the direction of Bronkhorstspruit passing Verena onto Dennilton, hang a right and head towards the dam. I haven’t been on that road in years, it was uneven then, riddled with potholes and narrow, not a bike friendly piece of tar at all. It has been redone and now it is bike friendly, very enjoyable. Turning right at Dennilton, and as passing through the township, we encountered formidable speed bumps every ±100M, this was quite frustrating but I suppose necessary, imagine knocking down one of the residents there. We arrived at our destination which is under new ownership, it was fairly busy , so looks to be a popular place.

Breakfast was reasonable and fairly good value for money, they don’t serve food on hot plates, although this wasn’t necessary as the food arrived at our table warm enough. We were unhurried, enjoying the moment and discussing all sorts. We then decided to head out to the dam, have a look around and take some photos. The level of the water is quite low, evidence of how little rain they have received this summer. As we didn’t want to face the obstacle course on the way home it was decided to make a detour around Groblersdal adding about 50Kms on to the journey. Once again we stopped off at Que Sera for a drink, the barmaid, well let ’s just say the lights were on but nobody was home. Eventually we got what we ordered except Susan who asked for a Rock Shandy but got a Bloody awful Mary, which Jan reluctantly drank. It was revealed that the next day one of our members was going to fetch their new bike, all will soon be revealed and we will have another bike joining us on the road.

SPACE CAKE IS A DELICIOUS CAKE DESSERT WHICH HAS THAT EXTRA-SPECIAL SOMETHING THAT MAKES IT AWESOME: IT IS MADE WITH HASH OR MARIJUANA FOR THAT NICE LITTLE TOUCH YOU ARE REALLY LOOKING FOR. WHAT COULD BE A BETTER PAIR THAN WEED AND CAKE? BELOW IS A CLASSIC SPACE CAKE RECIPE USING HASH. INGREDIENTS       

7/8 CUP OF ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR ¾ CUP MILK 2 EGGS ¾ CUP SUGAR ¾ CUP BUTTER (12 TABLESPOONS) 8 GRAMS OF HASH 8” X 8” CAKE PAN

NOW WHAT?  PRE-HEAT YOUR OVEN TO 375°  HEAT UP YOUR HASH WITH A CANDLE FLAME OR CIGARETTE LIGHTER UNTIL YOU ARE ABLE TO CRUMBLE IT UP EASILY INTO A BOWL; SET IT ASIDE.  MICROWAVE THE BUTTER FOR 20 SECONDS OR UNTIL IT’S THICK AND PASTY. NOW YOU WANT TO MIX YOUR CRUMBLED HASH IN WITH ABOUT 4/5 OF THE BUTTER; WITH THE REST OF THE BUTTER YOU WANT TO GREASE YOUR CAKE PAN SO YOUR CAKE WILL POP RIGHT OUT WHEN THE TIME COMES. MAKE SURE NOT TO OVER-BUTTER THE PAN; YOU WANT A NICE, THIN COATING ON THE PANS INNER SURFACE. NO MORE, NO LESS.  NOW TAKE YOUR EGGS, SUGAR, FLOUR, MILK, AND HASH BUTTER AND PUT THEM TOGETHER IN A MEDIUM OR LARGE SIZED MIXING BOWL. MIX ALL THE INGREDIENTS TOGETHER WELL, MIXING FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. YOU WANT TO BE SURE TO GET THE HASH SPREAD AS EVENLY THROUGHOUT THE CAKE BATTER AS POSSIBLE TO ENSURE “EQUAL DISTRIBUTION”. IF WHILE YOU ARE MIXING THE BATTER YOU FIND IT SEEMS TOO DRY SIMPLY ADD A DAB OF MILK; IF IT IS TOO WET ADD A BIT OF FLOUR. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE A PERFECT BALANCE WITH PRACTICE; JUST MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AS YOU GO.  POUR THE CAKE BATTER INTO THE GREASED CAKE PAN AND SPREAD THE BATTER AROUND WITH A SPATULA OR WOODEN SPOON UNTIL IT IS SMOOTH AND LEVEL. PLACE THE BATTER IN THE OVEN FOR 25 MINUTES. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THIS CAKE TO MAKE SURE IT IS DONE JUST AS YOU WOULD ANY CAKE; A TOOTHPICK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAKE IS FINE. A CLEAN TOOTHPICK IS A COOKED CAKE; IF IT ISN’T DONE PUT IT IN FOR ANOTHER 5 MINUTES AND CHECK IT AGAIN.  LET THE SPACE CAKE COOL IN THE PAN FOR AROUND 20 MINUTES. IT SHOULD COME OUT WITH NO PROBLEM AT THAT POINT IF YOU GREASED THE PAN PROPERLY. YOU NOW WANT TO LET IT COOL OFF FOR ANOTHER 30 MINUTES OR LONGER (UPSIDE DOWN ON A WIRE RACK IS OPTIMAL, BUT PLAY THE HAND YOU ARE DEALT)  ICE IT OR PUT POWDERED SUGAR ON IT; DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO IT. IT DOESN’T MATTER BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO EAT IT, SHARE IT, AND LOVE IT! START BAKING THAT YUMMY WEED SPACE CAKE TODAY!
