“Play Because You Absolutely Love the Sport.”

2015 | North Vancouver

Zone 2 Newsletter

Well the closing ceremonies are over and the curtain is down on the 2015, 55+ BC Games. North Vancouver was a most gracious and enthusiastic host. They have a lot to be proud of as theGames were an unquestionable success. Kudos to the very professional officials and all the work put in by a wonderful group of volunteers. Thank you to everyone who worked toward the success of the Games this year in whatever capacity. It wasn’t until 1904 at the Olympic Games in St. Louis that Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals for first, second and third place were first given out to competitors. Whether a medal is Gold, Silver or Bronze, it is given out to participants of the 55+ BC Games for exceptional achievement.

October, 2015

Track and field consistently brings in more than a few medals for our Zone .

“The competition is good and several of the participants have set Provincial and World records,” says Barry Sparkes, track & field sport co-ordinator. Even more than medals Barry feels it is the camaraderie that keeps participants coming back every year. “And sometimes,” he says, “you just feel lucky to be healthy enough to be competitive.” Into life and the Games a little rain did fall, and so too did a bit of disappointment. This was especially true for the participants of the morning hurdles event and the walk and run 10K race, which had to be cancelled because of heavy rains in North Vancouver. Participants understood however, as safety was the priority.

Determination soon replaced disappointment as these same participants re-set their goals for 2016 in Coquitlam. This year was especially fun for Zone 2 as we were showing off our new uniforms. There was a lot of green and white out there. A few of the comments were “ you look great”, “love the new shirts”, and “Best dressed Zone at the games.” Similar comments were heard and made throughout the Games culminating in some people asking where they could buy one. All in all, pictures from the Games gave the impression of one big happy sport family having a lot of fun together. The 2016 55+ BC Games will be held in Coquitlam. See you there!
