Description

Dear Friends, We are pleased to share the Columbus Symphony’s 2013–2014 Annual Report with the community. This report is intended to highlight the achievements of the past season, and also to provide an overview of the incredible range of programming that the CSO offers to enrich central Ohio. The CSO’s 63rd season demonstrated our commitment to fulfill our updated mission to provide symphonic music and educational programs of the highest quality, to engender passion and excitement in our diverse audiences. The season included exceptional live performances, expanded initiatives to engage new audiences, and a broad range of educational programs that served learners of all ages. 2013–2014 was also a season of transition for the CSO, as we bade farewell to Jean-Marie Zeitouni, who completed his tenure as Music Director with Carmen in Concert, the triumphant closing concert of the Masterworks season. The Orchestra reached new heights of excellence under Maestro Zeitouni’s baton, and we are appreciative of his significant contributions to the CSO’s development. As we look back on the successes of the previous season, we also look forward to a bright future for our Orchestra, under the leadership of our new Music Director, Rossen Milanov. His vision and talent will ensure that the Orchestra is an integral part of the fabric of our community. On behalf of the musicians, board, staff, and the hundreds of thousands of central Ohioans served by the CSO every year, we invite you to review our 2013–2014 annual report, and we thank you for your support of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Sincerely,

Lisa Barton Chair, CSO Board of Trustees

William B. Conner, Jr. Managing Director and CEO

SPOTLIGHT

Martin Inglis retired from his role as Board Chair at the end of 2013–2014, a position he held for six years. On occasion there is a leader that distinguishes themselves by setting a clear course and delivering on those commitments. Martin’s dedication and leadership were critical to the CSO’s sustainability and successes in recent years, and we salute his exceptional commitment to ensuring that central Ohio continues to enjoy the beautiful music of the Columbus Symphony.

Families

Young Musicians

Attendance for our two Concerts for Kids doubled this year, as families from throughout central Ohio joined us for “Peter and the Wolf” and “Carnival of the Animals” at the Capitol Theatre in the Riffe Center. Kids of all ages enjoyed two summer Popcorn Pops concerts in the Columbus Commons: “Gotta Love the Symphony!” and "Out of This World: Music from Star Wars, Superman, and Beyond!” Interactive pre-concert activities at both series added to the fun, thanks to CSO musicians Luis Biava, Richard Howenstine, Ken Matsuda, Andy Millat, and Jude Mollenhauer; volunteers from the Women’s Association; and our

Young talent shined in our Youth Orchestras, with 346 student musicians performing in five ensembles: the Youth Orchestra, Junior Strings, Cadet Orchestra, Chamber Strings, and the Columbus All City Orchestra, which served 52 students from Columbus City Schools. The Young Musicians Competition provided an opportunity for students in grades 3-12 to perform for professional feedback from CSO musicians and collegiate faculty, while the Young Musicians Showcase featured 15 promising young musicians performing in the lobby of the Ohio Theatre before Masterworks concerts.

K–12 Students

Four Young People’s Concerts brought over 4,300 K-12 students and their teachers to the Ohio Theatre to enjoy age-appropriate concerts, with pre-concert materials provided to schools to integrate the concert experience with Ohio educational curriculum. Concerts in Schools took CSO musicians into Columbus elementary schools, where they performed for approximately 1,600 students, while over 300 students and adults enjoyed Backstage with the Symphony tours of the Ohio Theatre.

Educators

The 2014 Music Educator Awards recognized exceptional teachers and community educators for their work to instill and inspire a love of music in their students and communities, promoting a greater understanding of and appreciation for music

education, its role in the broader academic curriculum, and the impact it has on the lives of young people throughout central Ohio. Congratulations to our 2014 awardees: Elementary: Linda Price Huff, General Music Teacher, Teays Valley Local Schools Secondary: Eric Kauffman, Vocal Music Director, Upper Arlington City Schools Community: Richard J. Suddendorf, Music Director and Conductor, Westerville Community Bands.

Adults

WOSU re-broadcast the Masterworks concerts on Classical 101, while their own Christopher Purdy hosted 30 Music Talks, pre-concert lectures that were offered prior to each Masterworks performance. Instant Encore allowed music lovers to stream recordings of their favorite performances online.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Our new series of Happy Hour Concerts made great music accessible to everyone, with three free, informal concerts at the Ohio Theatre, which were conducted by Gregory Vajda, Daniel Meyer, and Rossen Milanov. New audiences, including young professionals and families, were introduced to the CSO through this innovative new program. Side by Side with the CSO provided 50 community members with an opportunity to play with their CSO counterparts in a rehearsal on the stage of the Ohio Theatre. Participants were thrilled by the experience; as one stated, “What a wonderful gift it is, being able to play and create music. Thank you for the gift of being part of that glorious sound.” Community outreach concerts were expanded in 2013-2014, taking CSO ensembles throughout central Ohio to share the transformative power of music, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital, The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital, Port Columbus International Airport, the corporate headquarters of Chemical Abstracts and Nationwide Insurance, Polaris Fashion Place, and The Mall at Tuttle Crossing. VOLUNTEERS Nearly 600 volunteers served the CSO in 2013–2014, dedicating their time and talents in support of the Orchestra’s musicians, programs, and audiences. We recognize and appreciate the service of each and every one of these amazing volunteers!

CSO Chorus

The 140 all-volunteer members of the CSO Chorus enjoyed another great season under the direction of Ron Jenkins, performing in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”), Mozart’s Requiem, Carmen in Concert, and the ever-popular Holiday Pops.

Columbus Symphony Orchestra League (CSOL)

In 2013–2014, the CSOL presented several fundraising events, such as Tavern Americana at Garth’s Auctions in Delaware, with guest appraisals and auction preview, and Café America at Rockmill Brewery, featuring a beer tasting and brewery tour, CSO musicians, award winning barbershop quartet Park Avenue, and posh picnic fare. The season also saw the launch of Partners at the Podium, a unique fundraising partnership between the CSOL and Garth’s Auctions.

TONIC: Columbus Symphony Young Professionals

New in 2013–2014, Tonic is dedicated to making the CSO experience fresh, exciting and innovative for Columbus’ young professionals. For their debut season, the group held preconcert events, including a happy hour at Market 65 before Carmen in Concert, promoted the CSO on social media, and participated in the three Happy Hour at the CSO concerts.

The Women’s Association of the Columbus Symphony (WACSO)

The longest-running CSO volunteer group continued its tradition of service to the Orchestra, providing receptions for the Chorus, participants in Side-by-Side with the CSO, and recognizing CSO musicians and staff. Fundraising activities included pansy and pecan sales, a luncheon and style show, a series of Sunday Afternoon Musical Assemblies at Mozart’s with performances by CSO musicians, and WACSO’s signature Passport event, “Razzmatazz and All That Jazz,” held at the historic home of Allan Baker and Al Waddell.

SPOTLIGHT

Over seven summer weekends, 298 volunteers ensured that audiences in the Columbus Commons had a great time at each Picnic with the Pops concert in 2014. This hardworking group provides invaluable service, assisting in the logistics and operations of nearly every aspect of the CSO’s popular summer concert series.

The Legacy Society recognizes patrons who have advised the Development Office that they have made or are making provisions for a planned gift to the Columbus Symphony. Such provisions often involve a bequest made through the donor’s will, but there are other types of deferred gifts with tax benefits which should be discussed with a financial advisor. To notify the Symphony of such a provision and become a member of the Columbus Symphony Legacy Society, or to obtain further information about planned giving, please contact the Development Office at 614.221.5249. A planned gift to the Symphony can ensure that future generations are afforded an opportunity to experience a symphony orchestra of the highest artistic standard.
