2012 Annual Report

P.O. Box 455, Washburn, WI 54891 | 715-373-5552 | www.bigtop.org

From the Board President Dear Chautauqua Friends,

E

very night that I spend at Big Top Chautauqua, under the awesome big blue canvas tent and on the grounds overlooking beautiful Lake Superior, is incredibly special to me. It’s amazing because of the beauty of the art and the atmosphere of this phenomenal venue, but also because of what it means to each of us as we create memories with family and friends. It’s impossible to completely describe the intensity of the wonder and delight of listening to and experiencing the performances of the talented musicians on stage each night. The diversity and depth of performances at Big Top not only provide art and entertainment, but also education on the environment and history of Wisconsin and our gorgeous geographic area. As recognition of this accomplishment, Big Top Chautauqua was awarded the 2013 Arts, Culture and Heritage Award from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. Congratulations to our outstanding staff and Board of Directors, and to our dedicated and creative Executive Director Terry Meyer Matier. I am very proud and honored to be part of this organization that plays such an integral role in our community and our state.

In 2012 I accepted the Presidency from Ruth Goetz, who led the board with drive, passion, and financial diligence since 2007. During her tenure, Ruth was a major fundraiser for the organization, leading us to records in sponsorship levels and helping us find funding for new important programs, such as the free family matinees, that we strive to provide at the Big Top. On behalf of the entire board, I’d like to publicly thank Ruth for all she has done for Big Top. I look forward to creating many new memories with her and all the amazing board members under the tent in 2013. I’d also like to thank these members of our incredible Board of Directors who have done so much to put our organization on a firmer financial footing. They give of their time, their expertise, and their personal resources to further our mission of providing entertaining and educational cultural activities year-round. Thank you also to our dedicated staff that puts it all together, and to our incredible musicians and performers that amaze us on those gorgeous summer nights at the tent. Most of all, thanks to all of YOU: our friends, patrons, contributors, volunteers and everyone who supports Big Top Chautauqua in a multitude of ways. We could not do it without each and every one of you.

From the Executive Director NOTHING LIKE IT UNDER THE STARS!

In 2012 Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua celebrated our 27th summer season of cultural programs under the big blue tent, the 19th year of Tent Show Radio and the 21st year of significant national touring. Over the course of the year, Big Top programs touched a lot of people. Here are a few numbers for you.

In 2012 Big Top produced and presented: • 22 original historical musicals in the Tent • 33 guest artist shows featuring 49 different bands • 7 free family matinees and school day performances • 11 free workshops • 4 free lectures

• 52 weeks of Tent Show Radio broadcast on 50 stations throughout the country • 17 Blue Canvas Orchestra on Tour shows throughout the Upper Midwest That adds up to a bountiful year of artistic and educational offerings! This year we counted 25,500 tent admissions, 21,000 tour patrons and 1.1 million Tent Show Radio listeners! I hope that your life was enriched by Big Top Chautauqua this year. There truly is nothing like it under the stars! I look forward to seeing you all in 2013 at the tent, on tour, or as Charles Osgood says: “I’ll see you on the radio.”

Big Tap Chautauquafest

A new tradition was born in 2012! On September 15th Big Top held its first annual ChautauquaFest complete with beer tasting, a 5K hike to the top of Mt. Ashwabay, great festival music and a homebrew competition. Thanks to numerous supporters and suppliers, it was the most fun that can be had on a beautiful fall day! We look forward to seeing the “beerfest” grow in the coming years. Thanks to Star Liquor, Super H Foods, WI Department of Tourism, Ashland Outdoor Education Foundation, Bo Belanger, Kevin Hunt, our homebrew judges, all of the distributors and our amazing volunteers who made this a stellar event!

2012 Financial Statement

aising a tent in the Spring and keeping it up all Summer while over 25,000 people are superbly entertained is no easy task. It requires investors, and our investors come in many forms: ticket buyers, a dedicated and creative staff, a large community of volunteers, a supportive government as well as generous and engaged financial donors. All sharing a whole lot of passion to keep the magic happening year after year.

It also requires prudent financial decisions that meet the expectations of our investors by providing sustainability. I’m happy to report that these decisions are being made and the 2012 financial results are proof of that. And you can expect this to continue. The strategic plan that guides the organization is sound and provides increased security for years to come. Thank you for your continued investment in Big Top Chautauqua and I look forward to seeing you under the tent for what’s going to be another great year! Best regards,

Robert Breunig

Big Top Chautauqua Economic Impact

Impact on Our Community

Big Top Chautauqua brings visitors to the Chequamegon Bay area. In fact, area lodging owners rate Big Top as the #1 attraction for their guests. Over 579,000 people and $108 million! During the past two and a half decades over 579,000 people have attended Big Top performances, many of them tourists and visitors to the area. The indirect benefit of these visitors to the lodging industry, restaurants, retail stores, gas stations and other businesses has been estimated by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism as $4 million annually.

In addition •

Nearly $1 million per year in direct expenses goes back into our community for salaries, taxes, transportation, advertising, telecommunications and all of the products and services necessary to operate this non-profit performing arts organization.

We promote the region. Annually Big Top spends upwards of $100,000 on marketing and public relations drawing people to the area. Tent Show Radio is heard on 50 public radio stations throughout 10 states with an estimated weekly national listenership of 21,000 people.

We assist other area non-profits, providing tickets and gift certificates for fundraisers.

We provide support to the Ashwabay Outdoor Education Foundation and the Mt. Ashwabay Ski and Rec Area by bringing patrons to their bar and concessions during our shows – aiding them in sustaining their non-profit organization.

We offer free programs to our area school students - in 2012 over 700 students attended our school day matinee of The Mountains Call My Name where they learned about John Muir and his efforts to preserve our natural resources. The students came from local & regional elementary, middle and high schools from as far away as Solon Springs.

Big Top contributes much to make this area a wonderful place to live and a vibrant tourist destination.

SUPPORT BIG TOP

Your gift to Big Top is an investment in culture under canvas, music, community, and future memories to be made at the Tent. Each year we must raise a quarter of our operating budget from charitable contributions to bridge the gap between ticket sales and operating expenses. It is only with your generous support that Big Top Chautauqua will continue to flourish. Gifts of all sizes are needed and appreciated. Thank you!! Contribute at: www.bigtop.org/support-big-top

Why Should I Help? You should help if you:

• Care about the education and inspiration of our children and citizens • Value the original shows that teach the history or our land and ancestors • Care about sustaining the Bayfield area’s local economy • Enjoy amazing performances at the Tent on summer nights • Listen to Tent Show Radio • Agree that sustaining a gathering place for the community to experience programs of depth and culture makes your life a little richer.

In short, you should support Big Top if the performances you experience at Big Top enrich your life, and the lives of your family and friends.
