“Our partnerships are essential...” As I reflect on the past year, I am extremely proud of all that Central Piedmont Community College has accomplished. We made significant gains, despite an economy that continued to face great turmoil; we maintained our focus, when forced to do more with less; and we answered the public’s call as the need for community colleges became more important than ever. It is our commitment to excellence and innovation that positions us at the forefront of Mecklenburg County’s economic development and workforce initiatives. Our partnerships with local

business and industry are essential as we equip our students with job acquisition skills during these challenging times. We realize we are a key partner in the county’s economic recovery. As Mecklenburg County’s community college, we create innovative programs and provide learning opportunities and training to serve the diverse needs of the community. By providing effective workforce development solutions, we help the Charlotte Regional Partnership and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce attract new businesses and jobs to the region, building a stronger and more robust Charlotte. To ensure our success in this area, advisory councils comprised of local executives and technical experts work throughout the year to evaluate the appropriateness of our course content. In this Annual Report, we share with you how we are doing our part to be the community college that Mecklenburg County needs and deserves. We also feature a sampling of the innovative programs, events and initiatives that we provide, enriching the community we have called home for almost 50 years. Cordially,

CPCC impacts the local economy in three primary ways: 1) the College’s local purchases and wages paid to employees; 2) the spending of students from outside Mecklenburg County; and 3) the increased skills base of the local workforce. CPCC operations add $78.1 million a year to the Mecklenburg County economy. The spending of CPCC students from outside the county generates approximately $13.3 million for the Mecklenburg economy. Combining these totals with $826.7 million CPCC students add each year in earnings and increased business production equals $918.1 million CPCC adds to the Mecklenburg County economy each year. At the same time, for every dollar students invest in an education from CPCC they receive $3.10 in higher future income over the span of their careers, and every dollar of state or local tax money invested in CPCC returns $2. *Independent study conducted in 2011 by Economic Specialists Inc.

CPCC Hosts Sold-Out Career Event 2011 Career Fair Connects Industries to Professionals for Workforce Re-Entry

CPCC hosted its 23rd annual Career Fair, giving local working professionals the opportunity to connect with business leaders representing a variety of industries, including health care, hospitality and public safety. The March 3 event attracted nearly 2,000 job seekers through the doors of the Grady Cole Center to meet with the more than 70 participating businesses. Throughout the day, attendees met with a variety of representatives from companies such as Marriott International, Siemens Energy, Harris Teeter and others to discuss how their qualifications could move the organization forward. “During its 23-year history, our annual Career Fair has become known as the community’s career resource,” said Christy Curts, career counselor and Career Fair coordinator for CPCC. “We are fully committed to serving our community during these challenging times, giving local residents the opportunity to connect to today’s employers, re-enter the workforce and contribute to the economic recovery.” d

Cato Middle College High School Students Set Record High school juniors and seniors enrolled at CPCC’s Cato Middle College High School, located on the Cato Campus, achieved a 100-percent composite score on the state of North Carolina’s End-OfCourse (EOC) exam for the 2009-2010 academic year. This marked the first time Cato Middle College High School

achieved a 100-percent score on the state’s EOC testing, and the highest test rate in the state of North Carolina and among Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Each year, the state tests high school juniors and seniors on their understanding of a variety of academic areas, including biology, geometry and economics, among others. This year’s EOC exam focused on algebra II and U.S. history. Of the 62 students tested at Cato Middle College High School, 74.2 percent earned Level IV honors, the highest level possible on

Central Piedmont Community College helped hundreds of local residents connect to opportunities in the energy industry during its inaugural “Energy Careers for a Bright Future” event on August 3, 2010. The event provided a wealth of information for individuals seeking to enter the energy field, with more than 35 speakers/moderators; over 40 exhibitors representing companies such as Duke Energy, The Shaw Group and Piedmont Natural Gas; and numerous networking opportunities with leading energy-related businesses. The event sold out and brought more than 270 participants to the College’s Harris Conference Center. d the exam. To pass the exam, students must achieve a Level III or higher. The Cato Middle College High School opened in fall 2007 and is the first and only CMS Middle-College program. The school provides students with the opportunity to earn an average of 30 college credit hours while still in high school at no cost to them or their families. The experience prepares students to leave Cato Middle College High School with a jump-start on their continued education and a passion to succeed in future challenges. d

CPCC Launches Campaign to Highlight Student and Business Success in a Challenging Economy In May 2011, CPCC launched its new image campaign promoting student success. The campaign was given the tagline “Successfulfilled,” to capture the essence of the College’s mission, vision and values in a single thought/phrase. Area residents saw the “Successfulfilled” campaign in local publications and on the College’s campuses. The “push” was a strategic marketing initiative designed to introduce students such as CPCC alumna Julie Wooten – and local business and industry giants such as Celgard, LLC – who have utilized the College’s many resources to find success. These campaign stories illustrate the impact CPCC has on students, businesses and the community as CPCC strives to become the national leader in workforce development and moves closer toward its 50th anniversary as Mecklenburg County’s community college (1963-2013). d

American Heart Association Names CPCC “Fit-Friendly Company” For the fifth consecutive year, the American Heart Association (AHA) named Central Piedmont Community College a “Fit-Friendly Company." The AHA specifically recognized the College’s Be Well Committee and Human Resources Department for encouraging CPCC employees to pursue a healthy lifestyle in the workplace. CPCC Secures $1M Grant to Launch Health IT Workforce Training Program During the 2010-2011 academic year, Central Piedmont Community College learned its two-year American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant would be renewed. The College was awarded the $1 million grant in 2010 to help dislocated workers re-enter the workforce with new skills. CPCC used the funding to launch a non-credit Health

Information Technology (IT) Workforce Training Program to equip students with the skills needed to apply for entry-level Health IT positions in as little as six months. “Health IT professionals will be in high demand going forward as the nation’s healthcare system shifts its patient records from hard copy format to a universal, digital database that may be accessed and shared by doctors across the country,” said Kevan Weaver, an instructor in CPCC’s Health Information Technology program. “This transfer of information is the result of new legislation passed by the

U.S. government that seeks to improve patient care by connecting health care practitioners – from hospitals to small doctor’s offices – with an individual’s most recent medical record.” CPCC is one of three community colleges in North Carolina to participate in this statewide initiative which strives to produce qualified professionals who will have both a medical and information technology body of knowledge to ensure the nation’s electronic health record project achieves high marks in efficiency, privacy and security. d

Completion By Design Grant Awarded to Encourage Success in the Workplace CPCC, together with four other North Carolina community colleges, has been selected to receive a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Completion by Design (CBD) grant. The cohort will share a $500,000 planning grant to launch the CBD project in North Carolina. The funding will provide CPCC with additional resources to implement new learning approaches that will make the college experience more responsive to its student population by focusing on the entire student experience from intake to completion and building on the interdisciplinary work and strong connections among the five colleges involved. According to federal data, just 22 percent of first-time, full-time community college students graduate in three years. For Hispanics and African-Americans, the rates are even lower – at 17 and 14 percent. Solving this national issue is important as many of tomorrow’s jobs require at least some post-secondary education. The Completion by Design initiative helps community colleges better serve students, thereby increasing the number of young people who obtain a degree, certificate or credential. At CPCC, Completion by Design will build on the many proven, existing practices already underway at the College’s six campuses. As the initiative progresses, the Gates Foundation will study CPCC’s progress and replicate its best practices at other peer institutions, helping a greater number of students across the country achieve their dream of completing their education. d

CPCC To Be Named Future Home of Broadcast Hall of Fame

CPCC leaders announced that CPCC will serve as the future home of Charlotte’s Broadcast Hall of Fame during CPCC TV’s 2010-2011 fall lineup premiere event on September 22, 2010. Located in the CPCC TV Broadcast Center on the College’s Central Campus, the facility will recognize the accomplishments of the many distinguished broadcast professionals whose technical abilities, voices,

personalities and stories have served to inform and inspire countless viewers and listeners. “There is no better way to teach the public about the history of Charlotte’s broadcast industry than to marry one of the leading educational institutions in the area – CPCC – with a facility that showcases Charlotte’s influence on broadcast journalism – the Charlotte Broadcast Hall of Fame,” said James

CPCC Addresses At-Risk Students, Receives Next Generation Learning Challenges Grant Next Generation Learning Challenges has recognized Central Piedmont Community College’s Online Student Portal Learning System (OSPLS) as a proven, technologybased solution that addresses the retention of at-risk collegiate students. CPCC was awarded a $250,000 grant in May 2011 to share and implement its OSPLS with seven other peer institutions located across the state and the United States to boost student success at their campuses. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Next Generation Learning Challenges

(http://nextgenlearning.org) is a multiyear initiative that seeks to address educational barriers by using technologyenabled tools and solutions to improve college readiness and completion in the U.S. Since being introduced at CPCC in 2004, the College’s OSPLS has improved the academic success of young adult learners enrolled in CPCC developmental education courses. From 2004 to 2009, CPCC students participating in all elements of the OSPLS were three percent more likely to earn a college degree and more than 10 percent more likely to get

“A” through “C” grades in their courses. As a result, nearly 70 faculty and staff representatives from North Carolina community colleges and other peer institutions across the country visited CPCC May 10-11, 2011, to receive training on the College’s OSPLS. During the two-day training sessions, participants worked extensively within the tool to learn its many applications, worked individually and in teams to develop lesson plans and engaged in strategy sessions regarding how to fully implement the OSPLS on their campuses. d

Achieving the Dream – Focus on Student Success CPCC kicked off the Achieving the Dream (AtD) initiative in August 2010 with a Data Summit. This summit helped set the stage for an integrated, data-driven approach to creating an engaged college community focused on student success. More than 350 full-time faculty, staff and administrators from the Learning Unit and from Enrollment and Student Services (ESS) participated in this summit. The Data Team worked to identify gaps in student success while the Core Team worked on the process of identifying institutional barriers to student success. Data Dialogs were held on each of the six College campuses to promote broad engagement and an understanding of the AtD process and explain the importance of using data to discover obstacles to student

success and develop solutions. In February 2011, the Core and Data Teams came together and selected improving success rates of developmental math students and improving success rates of online students as the two priorities for the 2011 – 2012 implementation year. Based upon these priorities, two “think tanks” were created to research innovative, evidence-based strategies, initiatives and interventions to produce and

sustain improved student success. In order to implement and create assessment plans for each strategy, six Strategy Teams have been created with faculty from the areas targeted by the interventions as well as staff from ESS, ITS, eLearning and Institutional Research. d

Customized Training Helps Hundreds of Area Businesses Find Greater Success CPCC’s Corporate Learning team helped more than 500 local companies navigate 2010’s challenging business environment by providing valuable tools that could result in new jobs and industry growth for Mecklenburg County. Among those organizations needing assistance was Siemens Energy, Inc., a company in the midst of growing its business and undergoing a major expansion to incorporate new manufacturing and service capabilities at its Charlotte facility. The company’s expansion plans required that its employees be trained in new areas to make

College Names North Campus the Merancas Campus to Honor Longtime Donors Central Piedmont Community College is fortunate to have a generous family working quietly to address one of the College’s biggest challenges – scholarships for students who wish to attend the College and prepare for meaningful careers but lack the financial resources to do so. For almost 20 years, the Merancas Foundation, established by Casey and Anke Mermans, has helped these students build productive, meaningful lives by providing access to educational and jobtraining opportunities. Mr. Mermans, a successful businessman and a native of the Netherlands, has seen the European model of technical education and workforce preparedness work well over the years. Thus, he and his wife have a strong affinity for CPCC’s mission of preparing people for the workforce.

It is about being productive citizens.” This focus has benefited students preparing for technical careers, including recent high school graduates. It also has helped unemployed and underemployed individuals train or re-train for a new career after losing their jobs in today’s economy, and assisted unemployed workers who lack the basic education and technical skills necessary to find

employment and move from welfare to work. Merancas scholarships are far-reaching. They have helped students prepare for high-demand health careers by earning certificates in phlebotomy, medical records, keyboarding, lab assisting and nursing assisting. Numerous students have received Merancas scholarships for Welding Technology; Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration; Computer continued next page

Information Technology; Office Systems Technology; Construction Management, and many more. Suffice it to say, the Merancas Foundation has enhanced and enriched the lives of some 3,000 individuals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area by helping them attend CPCC. And, when you think about it, the Merancas Foundation is helping train individuals to meet the day-to-day needs of our community and make it a better place to live. The Merancas Foundation has also helped CPCC with much-needed program funds. In 2009, the Merancas Foundation enabled CPCC to launch a Center for Sustainability to train students for careers associated with “green” industries and environmental sustainability. In 2011, the Merancas Foundation was instrumental in establishing an Engineering Career Academy to help Charlotte-Mecklenburg students prepare for high-demand engineering careers. Recent U. S. Department of Labor statistics indicate a growing need for engineers, particularly in the energy sector, and Charlotte is rapidly becoming an energy industry center. Over the years, the Merancas Foundation has

also enabled the College to implement other new program initiatives including an Integrated Systems Technology Certificate Program taught in the evenings and on the weekends to prepare students for other high-demand, high-salary technical careers. This family is making a galvanizing difference by helping build successful men and women and more inclusive communities in our region. They are proof there is indeed hope for colleges that align themselves with the needs of the communities they serve and most importantly, for students in need of financial assistance who want to learn an employable skill. The support of the Merancas Foundation substantially impacts CPCC’s ability to extend academic and careertraining opportunities to the citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Given today’s economy, these opportunities are more important than ever before. The Mermans family has found a wonderful way to help individuals and the community. In recognition of this family’s longtime support of CPCC, the College has named its North Campus in Huntersville, N.C., the Merancas Campus. A naming

ceremony was held at the campus in October to honor the Mermans’ generosity and philanthropic spirit. Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC, said, “Casey and Anke have always subscribed to CPCC’s mission – to help individuals prepare for today’s workforce by equipping them with the skills they need to be successful. Because of the Mermans’ generosity, CPCC will be able to offer the training programs necessary to accomplish this goal for years to come. The Blumenthal Foundation and RSC Chemical Solutions Support College Programs The Blumenthal Foundation and the Blumenthal’s RSC Chemical Solutions Company contributed $50,000 this year in financial support and products to the College’s Sustainability Technologies Program and the Transport Systems Technologies Division. The Blumenthal Foundation and the forerunner of RSC, Radiator Specialty, have been longtime supporters of environmental causes. RSC Chemical Solutions continues to be a leader in the production of automotive and other chemical products. The Blumenthal Foundation supported the Sustainability Technologies Program, located on the College’s Central Campus, to help prepare students for careers in the region’s rapidly developing alternative energy sector. CPCC and Carolina CAT Partner to Create Service Technician Program To meet the expected demand for heavy equipment professionals, CPCC’s Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology (HEATT) Department announced it would be partnering with Carolina Tractor, the Caterpillar dealer for Western North Carolina, to establish the Carolina CAT Service Technician Program at the College’s Merancas Campus in Huntersville, N.C. of the program, Carolina CAT presented CPCC with a check for $20,000 to provide student scholarships for the program. “This new program will blend Carolina Tractor’s industry techniques with CPCC’s state-of-the-art facilities to create a unique learning experience for students,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC, at the joint press conference event. “Upon completion of the program, students will earn a curriculum diploma and be prepared to enter the workforce as entry-level service technicians in just 12 months.”

Sensoria Returns to CPCC to Bring the Best in the Arts Sensoria is an annual celebration of the arts that brings arts enthusiasts from across the region to CPCC’s beautiful Central Campus near uptown Charlotte. This year’s Sensoria event was the week of April 8-16, 2011. It included appearances by National Book Awardwinning author Barry Lopez and North Carolina Poet Laureate Cathy Smith Bowers. It also included CPCC Summer Theatre’s production of “Almost Maine,” CPCC Opera Theatre’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Requiem,” a “Families of Abraham” photography exhibit and performances by The Assads and the TOSCO Music Party. Sensoria culminated with its signature event on Sensoria Saturday when it partnered with Charlotte Clean and Green and the City of Charlotte’s Neighborhood Symposium for a special all-day event that included something for everyone – live concerts, hands-on art activities for children and much more. Weisiger Names Cardiovascular Technology Program CPCC’s Cardiovascular Technology program will be named for Agnes Binder Weisiger in recognition of a generous gift from Mrs. Weisiger in January 2011. The Agnes Binder Weisiger Cardiovascular Technology Program is housed in the College’s new Health Careers Building on Central Campus. The program prepares students for careers as highly-skilled health professionals, performing specialized procedures leading to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Approximately 30 CPCC students pursue a degree in Cardiovascular Technology each year. Entry into the program is extremely

competitive. Annually, there are six applicants for every available opening. Mrs. Weisiger is a strong proponent of education and especially Central Piedmont Community College. She is Agnes B. Howard Levine Foundation Gift Adds Faculty and Classes Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer for Family Dollar Stores Howard Levine recently made a gift to CPCC to meet the growing demand of student enrollment by enabling the College to hire additional part-time faculty. Commenting on this gift, CPCC President Tony Zeiss said, “For the past two years we have been turning away 4,000 students each semester who can’t get into the courses they need. This generous gift couldn’t come at a better time, and it will fund additional classes.” Mr. Levine says his father, Leon Levine, preached, “If you’re fortunate enough to be in a position to give back, you do. It wasn’t a hard thing for me to understand. My dad set the example, and I thought it was an outstanding example.” Mr. Levine continued, “People say it’s easy to give away money. But to do it right, you’ve got to be thoughtful.” His father also taught him to approach philanthropy like a business. “He knows what he’s giving to. In October 2010, CPCC received a grant of $50,000 from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to support the College’s Pathways to Employment Program, a nationally acclaimed training program that moves people from welfare to work. This is the second year that the Bank of America Charitable Foundation has contributed to this life-changing program. The Pathways to Employment Program is a short-term course of study that allows students to complete up to 32 weeks of course work in 12 to 14 weeks. It provides basic skills training for students seeking their high school diploma or general equivalency degree (GED) and workforce skills training for students seeking successful employment and career development. About this gift, Tommy Norman, president of the CPCC Foundation Board of Directors, said, “It is through gifts such as this that the College can continue to serve our community as one of the premiere community colleges in the country. Thank you for contributing so generously.” d

Time Warner Cable Makes an Impact with “If I Had a Hammer” Program Due to decreased funding this year, Central Piedmont Community College had to cut back on the number of programs it offers the public, including those programs it offers in conjunction with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) that benefit secondary school age children. However, thanks to a $15,000 grant from Time Warner Cable, the College was able to bring back its “If I Had A Hammer” program, a class that teaches at-risk students the importance of math skills, teamwork and communication through personal instruction and handson activities. The program kicked off September 24, 2010, at the CPCC Harper Campus, following a special check presentation featuring CPCC, CMS,

Time Warner Cable and “If I Had A Hammer” program leaders. During the 2010-2011 school year, approximately 450 CMS middle school students participated in the “If I Had a Hammer” program, a project that engages students in a way that no conventional textbook approach can match. Under the supervision of a “Hammer Boss,” students work together to construct an 8' x 11' Hammer House, complete with windows, a door and a front porch.

Mr. David P. King, chairman and chief executive officer, Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings/ LabCorp, confirmed on June 22, 2011, that his company would support CPCC’s Cytotechnology program for the next three years with a gift of $225,000 to help meet the program’s instructional needs. For the duration of Laboratory Corporation’s support, the College will designate one program instructor each year as the Laboratory Corporation Cytotechnology Instructor. In making this gift, Mr. King was keenly aware that LabCorp hires CPCC’s cytotechnology graduates each year, stating that LabCorp is pleased with the quality of CPCC program graduates. CPCC has the only Cytotechnology program in the Carolinas. College president Dr. Tony Zeiss said, “We are grateful for Laboratory Corporation’s generous support. It will help us continue to offer cytotechnology training at a time of budgetary constraint.” d

During construction, the “Hammer Boss” takes several scheduled build breaks to speak with students about a variety of topics, such as the importance of mathematics, how to maintain a good work ethic and set career goals, and how to build a good foundation in life and make smart decisions. The breaks reinforce the importance of education to personal growth and the idea that success is available to any individual willing to make an effort and commitment. d

College Friend Christa Overcash Honored on Her Birthday Christa A. Overcash has been a longtime supporter of CPCC. She began her involvement with the College by supporting the CPCC Foundation’s “Winning Partnerships Campaign” in 1995. In 2000, the College named the Christa A. Overcash Nursing Program in recognition of Mrs. Overcash’s generosity. In 2006, the College dedicated the Christa and Reece A. Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Center located at Elizabeth Avenue and Kings Drive on the College’s Central Campus near uptown Charlotte. In addition, Mrs. Overcash has established a book endowment, an endowment to help provide pins for students who graduate from the Overcash Nursing program and an Overcash Scholarship Fund. Mrs. Overcash has made a tremendous difference for CPCC students, and we

On a warm evening in June 2011, Mrs. Overcash received “the surprise of a lifetime.” Her family, CPCC friends and her friends in Charlotte and other states from as far away as Wisconsin, honored her with a surprise birthday party. the lawn in front of the Overcash Building, and everyone enjoyed this special evening, but no one more than Mrs. Overcash. And, no one is more deserving of a special celebration. May she have many more happy birthdays! d

The Wells Fargo Foundation Provides Career Training for Displaced Workers and Veterans In 2011, Central Piedmont Community College received $250,000 from The Wells Fargo Foundation to provide training for displaced workers. A total of $200,000 is enabling CPCC to provide career training for dislocated workers, including professionals and paraprofessionals in addition to entry-level workers. With these grant funds, the College is providing scholarships to enable displaced professionals and paraprofessionals to enroll in training and education classes that will provide skills and knowledge that are currently in demand by the region’s business sector. The College is also utilizing Madelyn Caple, grant funds to provide coaching services to help displaced Regional Manager Senior Vice President professionals and paraprofessionals find new careers, a muchWells Fargo needed component of career training for displaced workers. The Wells Fargo Foundation is also generously providing a grant of $50,000 to extend career training opportunities to U. S. military veterans. The funds are being utilized to provide scholarship assistance to financially needy veterans and to provide career counseling and coaching services which are specifically designed to meet the needs of veterans. In particular, grant funding is assisting those unemployed and underemployed veterans who are seeking short-term, career-specific training required to enter or re-enter the workforce. There is a considerable need for financial assistance and counseling among both of these groups, and The Wells Fargo Foundation is making a monumental difference at CPCC. d

CPCC officials and community members, together with Belk Foundation representatives, gathered for a special dedication event on May 18, 2011, to honor the late John Belk, former Charlotte mayor and department store executive. This event was in recognition of the Belk Foundation’s gift to CPCC to name the John Montgomery Belk Plaza located on the portion of Charlotte’s Little Sugar Creek Greenway in front of the College’s Philip L. Van Every Culinary Arts Center on Central Campus. During the ceremony, Mr. Belk’s daughter, Mary Claudia Pilon, spoke about her father’s generosity and philanthropic spirit, and a bronze commemorative plaque was unveiled to honor Mr. Belk. The Belk Foundation and the Belk family have generously supported CPCC and its programs through the years. College Honors William K. Diehl Jr. With Naming of Paralegal Technology Program CPCC officials and guests gathered for a special dedication on November 17, 2010, to honor Charlotte lawyer William K. Diehl Jr., for his gift to the College to support the Paralegal Technology Program and provide operating assistance for the College. The dedication marked the naming of the William K. Diehl Jr. Paralegal Technology Program, located on the College’s Wayland H. Cato Jr. Campus in Charlotte, N.C. The Diehl Paralegal Technology Program at CPCC is the only American Bar Association approved paralegal program in Western North Carolina. The College offers both an Associate in Applied Science degree and PostBaccalaureate diploma in paralegal technology. The program’s curriculum seeks to provide students with the legal knowledge and practical skills necessary to become competent, ethical paralegals who are capable of assisting attorneys in civil and criminal trial practice, title searches, estate administration, investigations, public record searches and other legal tasks. d

Zeller Awarded “Outstanding Legacy Award” The Charlotte Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals awarded James Douglas Zeller its “Outstanding Legacy Award” posthumously at National Philanthropy Day on November 10, 2010. This award was based on Mr. Zeller’s generous legacy gift in support of the Music Program at CPCC. Melissa Vrana, associate dean for Arts, Communication and Culinary Arts at CPCC, was in attendance to accept this award on behalf of Mr. Zeller. She said, “CPCC students and alumni still tell stories of how Mr. Zeller taught them to love and appreciate music of all kinds. Doug Zeller’s gift is an impressive encore.” Mr. Zeller realized that a carefully structured estate gift was the best means for him to make a meaningful gift in support of causes near to his heart – music education and the extending of educational opportunities to deserving students. CPCC Donor Gives College Original Dan Nance Painting Thanks to the generosity of Charlotte insurance executive, CPCC Foundation Board member and College donor, Cameron Harris, CPCC is now home to an original painting of “The Battle of Charlotte” by renowned historical artist Dan Nance. At a ceremony on September 27, 2010, Mr. Harris said he was donating the piece to CPCC to give students a history lesson about the Queen City’s involvement in the Revolutionary War. A plaque honoring Mr. Harris’ generosity was revealed during this special commemorative event. d

McKay Trust Will Help CPCC Students Dr. Clinton H. McKay was a Charlotte internist and chief of staff of the Charlotte Medical Clinic for many years. He was also a longtime friend and supporter of CPCC. He enjoyed the College Theatre productions, especially the musicals. Dr. McKay studied at CPCC after his retirement and became an accomplished pianist and student of composition. Dr. McKay passed away on May 29, 2010, and CPCC lost a strong advocate and dear friend. His support for CPCC, however, will continue. In his estate planning, Dr. McKay named CPCC beneficiary of a charitable remainder annuity trust. The College is grateful for his thoughtfulness. His gift will benefit CPCC students years into the future. d

James Douglas Zeller Remembered at Special Ceremony On October 14, 2010, college and community friends gathered to honor the life, memory and legacy of CPCC benefactor, James Douglas Zeller. The ceremony was held at 6:30 p.m. in the Christa and Reece A. Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Center on CPCC’s Central Campus. As a beloved instructor at the College, Mr. Zeller taught Music Appreciation and Applied Music at CPCC from 1974 until his untimely death in 2006 at the age of 59. He chose to “continue the music” by naming the College as a primary beneficiary of his estate. At his request, Mr. Zeller provided funds for the establishment of a James Douglas Zeller Endowment to provide scholarships to CPCC students preparing for music careers, a Zeller Music Performance Endowment for student productions and visiting artists, equipment updates for the College’s music laboratories, a piano for the Tate Recital Hall, and a beautiful Steinway concert grand piano for the Halton Theater. On this evening, a plaque was unveiled recognizing Mr. Zeller’s legacy gift and the naming of the James Douglas Zeller Music Laboratories at CPCC. Also, the beautiful Steinway piano was dedicated in honor of Mr. Zeller. It was our distinct privilege to have Nobuyuki “Nobu” Tsujii, a renowned pianist, perform at the dedication of this piano. Twenty-two-year-old Nobu began playing piano at the age of two when he played “Jingle Bells” on his toy piano after hearing his mother humming the tune in their Japanese home. Born blind, but gifted with a talent for music, Nobu won the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. His performance moved the jurors to tears, brought the audience to its feet and created such fervor that Time magazine coined the term, “Nobu Fever.” CPCC Foundation Board member and Chairman of the CPCC Legacy Society, Mr. William Claytor, closed the ceremony saying, “James Douglas Zeller is recognized this evening as a true philanthropist – he has changed the world with a giving heart. We are grateful for his life, his service, and his legacy.” d

CPCC Retirees Association President Reports The CPCC Retirees Association was formed in 2007. The association provides retirees with continued connectivity and advocacy opportunities Joe Summer with the College and social opportunities with former colleagues. Goodrich Helps U. S. Military Veterans In October 2010, CPCC received a grant from the Goodrich Corporation to help provide counseling services for veterans at the College. Since the spring of 2009, the number of veterans enrolled at CPCC has more than doubled. This increase in veteran enrollment can be attributed to the large numbers of veterans returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan and to the large number of older veterans returning to college after having lost their jobs during the economic recession. A significant need exists for counseling services that will help veterans with academic and vocational planning and other challenges and issues confronting them beyond the classroom. d

Douglas Provides Scholarships for Students Returning to School and Supports Veterans Scholarship Program Carol Douglas, CFP, was introduced to CPCC by Foundation Board member Wilton Connor. Ms. Douglas was struggling with multiple myeloma at the time, but she became a dear friend and strong supporter of the College. Ms. Douglas had a special regard for individuals who return to college after years in the workforce. She named CPCC a beneficiary of a Gratitude Endowment to provide scholarships for these students. In doing so, Ms. Douglas became a member of CPCC’s prestigious Legacy Society. The more Ms. Douglas learned, the more supportive she became. When she heard about the Veterans Scholarship Program CPCC was launching, Ms. Douglas established the Thomas J. Sills Endowed Veterans Scholarship in honor of her son, Thomas, who served three tours of duty in Iraq during his recent U.S. military service. Ms. Douglas said, “It’s a gratitude gift!” Ms. Douglas, a successful financial planner in Charlotte, always had a strong interest in culture and charity. When she retired from her position as vice president with Merrill Lynch in 2008 due to her illness, Ms. Douglas shifted her focus to her family and philanthropy. When Carol Douglas passed away on August 4, 2011, her gifts left Charlotte and many nonprofits much improved. We will always be grateful for her friendship and support of CPCC. d

James E. Rogers Named Richard H. Hagemeyer Award Recipient CPCC alumnus honored for demonstrating community involvement, outstanding character James E. Rogers, co-founder and senior vice president of Flagship Capital Partners, was the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award. The award recognizes a CPCC alumnus who has significantly benefited from experiences at CPCC and whose efforts have helped the community. Rogers earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from East Tennessee University in the 1960s before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1967. After serving in the armed services, he pursued a real estate career, working for The Ervin Co. as an analyst and area manager. As a consummate lifelong learner, he enrolled at CPCC in 1973 to hone his commercial real estate and investment knowledge, graduating in 1977 with an associate degree in general education. Since graduating from CPCC, Rogers has garnered the respect of the Charlotte community, not only through his James Rogers (left) accepting Hagemeyer Award from CPCC Trustee Ralph Pitts success as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, but also through his service to the community. He has served on the Board of Directors of many nonprofits and has served as Board president of a number of these organizations. As a result of his extraordinary leadership abilities and passion for volunteering, he has been awarded Leadership Charlotte’s Shelley R. Lyons Circle of Excellence Award, East Tennessee State University’s Outstanding Alumnus Award, the YMCA’s George Williams Lifetime Achievement Award and the Charlotte Region Commercial Board of Realtors’ Realtor of the Year Award. Reflecting on his many accomplishments, Rogers credits CPCC for much of his success. “I have been impressed by the depth of CPCC’s faculty and the broad range and diverse curriculum it offers,” he explains. “Year after year, CPCC prepares students for today’s workforce by helping them reach their goals. Because of this, the College is able to maintain its commitment to student success as it strives to become the national leader in workforce development.” Rogers was recognized with the Hagemeyer Award at CPCC’s commencement ceremony on May 12, 2011, and a scholarship was awarded to a CPCC student enrolled in the College’s real estate program in Mr. Rogers’ honor. “Jim is a tremendous asset to the Charlotte community; not only does he volunteer his own skills and abilities, but he also helps others connect with agencies that need help,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. “CPCC is proud to honor an individual of Jim’s caliber with the Richard H. Hagemeyer Award – an award that represents the best in community involvement, personal growth and character.” This award is named for Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer, CPCC president for 23 years, who led the College from a trade school with 1,200 students to the state’s largest community college. d

CPCC Charlotte Skyline Run Helps Meet Student Needs

The 16th annual CPCC Charlotte Skyline Run presented by Charlotte Business Journal generated significant support for the College this year. Approximately 1,200 participants ran, walked, or rolled wheelchairs from Central Campus on Elizabeth Ave. through the Elizabeth neighborhood on a course that is flat, fast and furious. The SunTrust Bank 5K Walk for Health, McGarry 5K Run, Northwestern Mutual 5K Wheelchair Roll and Nothing But Noodles 1K Family Fun Run continue to draw runners and walkers from across the Carolinas to one of Charlotte’s premier races. The event raised more than $84,000 for scholarships and other student needs. Clay Pigeon Challenge Cup Increases Scholarship Support The eighth annual Clay Pigeon Challenge Cup presented by Rodgers Builders at Meadow Wood Farm in Waxhaw, N.C., on May 20, 2011, was again a fundraising success for the College. The clay shooting event generated approximately $90,000 to provide scholarships and unrestricted support for the College. Pease Auditorium

Pease Auditorium Benefactors Pease Auditorium, located off Pease Lane on CPCC’s Central Campus near uptown Charlotte, was renovated in 2009 – 2010. This auditorium is named for Colonel J. Norman Pease, an avid supporter of CPCC during its early years. He headed the architectural firm that developed the College’s first master plan. Pease Auditorium was the first location for the College’s Drama Department to put on plays (1970 – 1994). Today this beautiful, elliptically-shaped auditorium is once again home for theatre and other performances at CPCC with smaller audiences. Colonel Pease passed away in 1987, but we remain grateful for his leadership and guidance. We are also grateful for the Pease Auditorium benefactors, enabling this

much-needed renovation to be completed.
