In case you haven't already heard the exciting news; the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter has a brand new home! After several months of planning and build out, we are thrilled to be moved in and anxious to start sharing all of this space and amenities with the chapter. Our new ASID office is located in The Houston Design Center, 7026 Old Katy Road, Suite 285, Houston, TX 77024. Many thanks again, to John Robinson, FASID and Marlys Tokerud, ASID for their cutting edge design and to Greg Ortega of G&D Custom Works for executing their plan and helping us to complete everything on time. To Linda Marble and crew for getting us moved and organized! And a sincere, heartfelt thanks to the Houston Design Center for making us feel welcome and for bringing us to our 'new home'. Well over 200 people attended our Celebration and Open House on April 8th. You will find numerous photos through out this newsletter that truly captured the festivities. Alton LaDay orchestrated a fun evening for us all. Jim Manning of Catered Affairs provided the delicious appetizers and Barefoot Winery donated the beverages. And Christine Mills kept the guests entertained with great tunes. Please make note of the two gorgeous oriental rugs in the office. We have the special Industry Partners of Pride of Persia Rugs and Ashley Antique Rugs to thank for those additions. And also a thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Nader Goravanchi of Goravanchi Persian Rugs for the beautiful floral arrangement you sent to the office. We enjoyed those flowers for over a week! We have so many incredible people to thank that it would be impossible to list them all in this letter. Please look to our 'Thank You' page in this issue because without all of your help, support and contributions, we could never have achieved opening this new office. A special thank you, however, to M&M Carpet Showroom for our custom front door mat and the seminar room carpet, Alkusari Stone for their assistance with an existing slate countertop, Theron Moore Wallworks for coming to our rescue with the red wall, Daltile for the granite countertops and the fabulous mosaic glass back splash, The Houston Showroom for fabricating and installing the stone as well as the glass tile, Tile Roofs of Texas & Moss Landscaping for the great looking entrance containers and plants, Gulf Coast Window Covering for the shades in the seminar room, Sunbelt Window Film for the window frosting and the great custom ASID logo cutout, and Design House and John Brooks Showrooms for the loan of some great looking furniture for our special evening. Also to Donna Vining for her help with the artwork, I say 'Thanks!' And a huge thank you to Relative Sound for the flat screen TV on the moveable stand that will give us great flexibility for future seminars and power point presentations. We would still be in the dark, if it weren't for Ralph Schiller of American Light. Thanks for going the extra mile for us on the lighting! Interiors 08', in New Orleans, was an amazing conference and I had a wonderful time. We were treated to some impressive speakers regarding 'Green' Design and also Universal Design, just to name a couple of topics. One of our very own members, Thomasine Johnson, spoke during one of the sessions entitled 'Diversity in Design'. I am so proud of her and her passion for outreach in the community. If you would like to get involved in her 'Design in the Community' committee, please call the ASID office leave your name and number. The Texas Gulf Coast Chapter has been given an exciting new fund raising opportunity by DSA Publishing & Design, Inc. We are going to print our own TGCC Cookbook! Look for more details in this newsletter, but the main points are for $ 700.00, the designer gets two pages in the cookbook. You submit a favorite Gulf Coast region recipe, a head shot of yourself, as well as a professionally photographed kitchen and/or dining area project cont. on page 4

Peer Tables There are many reasons you may not have joined a peer table. Jubilation ’08 - Successful and Festive Night By Barbara Schlattman, FASID & Odette Lueck, FASID, Jubilation Co-Chairs
Jubilation ’08, the ASID Foundation’s major fundraising event, was a festive night starting with the crowd carrying hurricanes and clad in beads following a Mardi Gras second line to the fun filled event. With almost 200 silent auction items and live auction items ranging from a trip to an Italian villa to antique candlesticks, there was something for everyone. The event raised over $120,000 and was a tremendous boost for the
ASID Foundation’s growing list of sponsored projects. One of these projects, REGREEN was unveiled during conference. The ASID Foundation and the U.S. Green Building Council partnered on the development of best practice guidelines and targeted educational resources for sustainable residential improvement projects. Your dollars have made a difference by making such projects possible. The ASID Foundation Board of Trustees wishes to thank all donors, members who secured items, and to all who purchased items. Benefits of an ASID Membership "As a sole proprietorship and a single person design firm, ASID opened my world to many opportunities and new friends. Networking with industry professionals and other designers are the best benefits that come to mind. Becoming a member of ASID has allowed me to be involved in more community activities, chair several fundraisers and participate in two showhouses. As a result of participation in ASID activities, I was offered an opportunity to become an elected member of my local chapter board for a two year postion. This board position has allowed me many learning experiences, while traveling - first to Chicago last summer for our annual Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC), then on a cruise to Cozumel for a Board retreat. Next summer there will be another CLC in Calgary, BC. Finally, I will be joining my new friends on another educational board retreat cruise (fun filled!). These are just some of the many benefits and advantages of membership in this great organization. And to think this all began with a single phone call asking me to chair my first fundraiser!"

The Houston Design Center Welcomes MFAH’s Rienzi! In March 1999, Rienzi , European decorative arts collection and gardens of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, opened to the public for the first time. The residence was given to the museum by philanthropists Caroll Sterling and Harris Masterson III. In anticipation of its tenth anniversary, Rienzi has completed its first book, Rienzi: European Decorative Arts and Paintings (London: Scala Publishers. Ltd., 2008). Seven experts 5in their fields contributed to the book, which includes over reviews Rienzi’s creation, architecture, and gardens and introduces 139 of its most interesting works of art to the public, On May 13, 2008, Katherine Howe, Rienzi’s founding director and a contributor to the book, will chronicle Rienzi’s metamorphosis during its last ten years and discuss some to the notable discoveries that have come to light. Two members win at national design competitions Julia Blailock, ASID, was an honored double winner in the recent national residential interior design competition, sponsored by Southern Accents & ASID. The winners were announced at Interiors 08' conference in New Orleans last month.
Marlys Tokerud, ASID was recently honored as the Regional Winner in Best Use of Sub-Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Contest. This is a national semi annual competition spotlighting kitchen designs using primarily, but not exclusively, Sub-Zero/Wolf products.

Gulf Coast Green Symposium By Gwen Redman, Green Committee Chairperson
This was a great symposium with an enormous amount of information to absorb. The theme was energy efficiency. I was very impressed with our Mayor, Bill White and his knowledge and involvement in the green movement. Houston has saved on energy cost by using windmills to generate energy, traffic lights have been changed to LED lighting signals, the city will using LEED standards for new and historic buildings, and Metro is purchasing hybrid buses. He also said that Houston’s greenest program is “Flex in the City “which allows employees to work from home. There are about 120 firms participating. Here are some of the other highlights: • Coal and copper sills are not visible so people tend to expect less from them since oil spills are more visible. • A study was done by Home Depot that showed that 20% of consumers were willing to pay up to 6 times more for certified plywood. More than a third preferred certified plywood even when is priced higher.
• Trends – There is going to be more and more third party certifications to gain public credibility. Consumers are more sophisticated and will determine which companies are responsive to consumer pressure. For example, protestors in front of hardware stores protesting DuPont’s white paint made in Australia had titanium in it, consumer pressure forced them to clean up the paint • Bio fuel may not be as eco friendly as perceived since it takes more energy to produce a gal of fuel from corn. • Healthy Building Network: mission to accelerate market demand for healthier and more just building materials. Unity Homes collaborated with New Orleans Habitat for Humanity to build healthy affordable housing. HBN has developed the Pharos project that is an evaluation system that compares products across 16 categories that should be available in a couple months. • Residents, workers, the local community and the global community are all affected by materials that release chemicals. And even though the odor is gone it does not mean the chemical is not still in the air.
• More people want to work for environmentally clean companies. • Household dust samples were collected from 10 states and Bio-monitoring test were done on breast milk from mothers, blood from babies umbilical cords, urine etc. and found that toxic chemicals were showing up in the samples. • There are three types of chemicals that were covered, PBT’s that are, Persistent – resist breakdown in the environment and gets into our water and air. Bio-accumulates –collects in the bodies of humans or wildlife. And Toxic – linked to cancer, birth defects, reproductive problems, neurological development and hormonal problems. • Products to avoid – PVC – dioxin by product and is released when burned and in landfill fires, Release VOC – affects indoor air quality for example formaldehyde associated with chronic health problems such as liver, kidney, nervous system etc. and Semi-VOC/heavy metals. They are released slower attached to dust and other particles. Chemicals cover HFR – flame retardants, PFC (prefluorochemicals) i.e. upholstery, Teflon, scotch guard, and phaletes. Heavy metals act as stabilizers in PVC, released through production, use and disposal. • When building green its teamwork, the builder and designer must create a checklist. Establish LEED goals, understand the point system, consider the homeowners wish list and budget. Try to keep the house small. • Our legacy to failure – Laws still lag behind the level of concern, most pollution is still permitted, most environmental laws do not protect human life. There are some 85k chemicals approved for sale by the EPA but not tested for human health effects and only twelve have been tested for neurodevelopment. Angle • Texas Gulf Coast Chapter

ASID Visits The National Design Triennial Over 100 ASID art enthusiasts joined the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) Senior Curator Toby Kamps for an artful March program. This winter the CAMH presented Design Life Now: National Design Triennial, the latest installment in an ongoing exhibition series from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Inaugurated in 2000, the Triennial seeks out and present the most innovative American designs from the prior three years in a variety of fields including product design, architecture, furniture, film, graphics, new technologies, animation science, medicine and fashion.

One enthusiastic member was heard exclaiming to ASID President Lynne Jones, “Lynne, you’re making ASID fun again!” This sentiment was shared by all the guests on this inspiring evening. One week after the CAMH visit, an intimate group of ASID members joined LUXE Magazine for a private viewing of 'Imperative Design' at Barbara Davis Gallery. Imperative Design was an exhibit curated by Lauren Rottet and featured works by Zaha Hadid, Ross Lovegrove, Mark Holmes, Arik Levy, Greg Lynn, David Mocarski and Lauren Rottet. The works chosen for this show demonstrate “the inevitability and importance of reaching a point today in which everyone has access to modern furnishings” as art, Rottet explained. Ms. Davis led the group on an informative tour to round out the art filled month of March for the chapter.

Ray Levy and I are constantly being asked 'How can I get involved with ASID?' and we have an event coming up that is a perfect opportunity to do just that! June 10th at 6:00pm is our IP/Designer Social Mixer and there are a number of ways to be involved. For the low price of $50 you will gain entry to the evening festivities and receive a cool name tag that will allow you to stand out among the Designers. If you are or aren't able to attend there are still a couple of items that will need underwriters. We will have the sponsors names on a poster and listed in the Angle the following issue. Areas that need underwriters are valet services, bar, possibly a jazz band, and three prizes that will be drawn during the event. In addition, we will be having a matching game during the evening that I would like everyone to participate in. I'll need a description about yourself. For example, my description might say "I used to run ProSource Flooring and now I sell fabric and furniture for Kravet and Lee Jofa. I have two adorable little boys named Wriley and Walker." The Designers would need to ask around until they found me and then have their card signed. IP members will stand out with flashing name-tags. Then that card will be put in the drawing for one of the three prizes. The goal is obviously to promote interaction between the IP members and the Designers and it should be a lot of fun! We are expecting a great turn-out for this event since is the first time that we can recall in a while that the Programs Committee has been so gracious to give us our own Program! This will be the June ASID program and they only have 6 a year. This so a big effort on behalf of our current board and chapter to encourage support for IP. So please thank Sandy Sawyer and Syd Farber for allowing us to throw this event. And get involved if you want to cultivate a relationship with the ASID Designer that will definitely be mutually fruitful for the both of you. Scottish-born photojournalist Harry Benson arrived in the U.S. with The Beatles in 1964 – and took the first American photo of the Fab Four. Architectural Digest is proud to honor Mr. Benson’s illustrative career by sponsoring the first-ever Houston exhibit of his photography at the Decorative Center Houston. Benson, a regular contributor to the magazine, has captured most of the highlights – and lowlights of this country’s watershed events. He was in the Los Angeles hotel ballroom when Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. He stood close to Richard Nixon when the President announced his resignation. He was on the Meredith March with Martin Luther King.
